Politics › PDP Moves For Resignation Of Deputy Speaker Following Dogara’s Group Breach Agre by morereb10(op): 1:03pm On Jun 17, 2015
Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) house of representatives have called for the resignation of the newly elected deputy speaker of the lower house, Suleiman Yusuf Lasun. The move by the PDP members is as a result of an agreement they had with their APC counterparts loyal to new speaker, Yakubu Dogara where they agreed that PDP’s Leo Ogor will emerge as the deputy speaker.

Ogor was the majority leader of the 7th Assembly, Leo Ogor, and he was originally tipped to emerge as the deputy speaker in an accord between the Dogara’s group known as Consolidation Group and the caucus of the PDP in the house.

The leadership of the APC for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker were Femi Gbajabiamila and Tahir Mohammed Monguno, respectively, But the Dogara group struck a deal with their PDP counterparts. According to Peoples Daily, the election of Ogor was difficult because of the keenly contested election for the position of Speaker in which Dogara won Gbajabiamila with just eight votes- 182 to 174.

The Dogara group then back-tracked on their agreement with the PDP members by sticking to Lasun so as to generate the sympathy of south west members in the House to their advantage. Their permutation worked as Lasun polled 203 votes as against Monguno’s 153. The Dogara’s group reportedly decided against presenting Ogor for the election after series of consultations with various stakeholders within the group on the floor of the house on the day of the election.

A reliable source from the PDP secretariat said the Dogara group reneged on the agreement because of fears that members from the North would have revolted by voting against Ogor. “There was an agreement but the group did not sustain it all through because it thought some members from the North would have voted in sympathy for Monguno and so they decided to woo members from the South West in the hope that having failed to clinch the Speakership they would rally round Suleiman Yusuf,” he said.

Non-withstanding, the PDP is insisting on the agreement, pressuring the Dogara group to compel Lasun to step aside and pave the way for Ogor to step in as Deputy Speaker.

The PDP has reached out to other zones for support saying the south south geo-political zone needs to be accommodated in the leadership structure of the House. Meanwhile, Nigerians have been reacting to the news that the National Assembly members will receive a total of N8.64billion as wardrobe allowance - See more at: http://www.exlinklodge.com/2015/06/pdp-moves-for-resignation-of-deputy.html#sthash.4evoSR6G.dpuf

Politics › Breaking News: Buhari To Probe Jonathan’s $9.7m Failed Arms Contract by morereb10(op): 7:35am On Jun 17, 2015
President: I’ll kill corruption

What actually went wrong with the $9.7m arms deal? Why was the cash flown to South Africa from Nigeria? Was the money, which South Africa impounded, actually meant for arms purchase? These are some of the questions which will soon be answered.

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to probe the Goodluck Jonathan administration’s deal.

He is to take up the issue with President Jacob Zuma. The cash was seized by South African security men last September as it was being transferred into their country on a private jet by agents of the Federal Government. Former President Jonathan’s government claimed that the money was mearnt to puchase arms from private companies in South Africa.

According to the government, Nigeria resorted to private puchase of arms to fight Boko Haram because the United States declined to sell arms to the country, in addition to persuading its allies not to allow sale of arms and ammunition to the country. But eyebrows were raised about the manner the money was taken to South Africa.

“I will attempt to ask him (President Zuma) about our $9.7 million which was not correctly transferred,” Buhari told Nigerians in South Africa during a meeting with them in Johannesburg to round off his visit to the country for the African Union (AU) Summit.

He said: “I’m told there are 83 Nigerians in prisons, I don’t know what they have done but I spoke to the President of South Africa this afternoon. He wants to come to Nigeria. There are issues we will talk about, I will certainly talk to him, I hope our ambassador will send a comprehensive report about the court cases, about those who lost properties during the disturbances.”

The South African authorities froze $9.3 million transported in cash by two Nigerians and an Israeli for arms purchase. At the time, South Africa said the transaction violated its laws on movement of cash. The two Nigerians and an Israeli were arrested at the Lanseria International Airport, Johannesburg, on September 5 in a private jet from Abuja. The money, stashed in three suitcases, raised suspicion when the passengers’ luggage were unloaded and put through the scanners.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in South Africa said there was an invoice for helicopters and armaments intended to be used in Nigeria. Two black plastic suitcases, filled with 90 blocks each containing US$100,000 in notes, with combination locks, were seized, as well as two pieces of hand luggage also containing US currency, according to City Press.

The Israeli national, Eyal Mesika, had the combination to open the locks.

Under South African laws, a person entering or leaving the country is expected to carry cash not exceeding US$2,300, or the equivalent in foreign currency notes. The private jet involved belonged to the head of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) Pastor Ayo Ortisejafor. Pastor Oritsejafor said the plane was on lease to a third party and he could not be blamed for its schedules.

President Buhari also promised to implement the cardinal policies of his administration.

He said: “Government is determined to secure the country, manage the economy, create employment and fight corruption. Some articulate writers have said if we do not kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria. This APC administration intends to kill corruption in Nigeria. We will do our best, I assure you.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) government, Buhari said, is determined to secure the country, improve the economy and eliminate corruption. According to him, the G7 leaders have expressed commitment to helping Nigeria tackle insecurity and develop its oil and gas sectors.

“We are getting the facts and logistic requirements together,” he said.

Buhari urged Nigerians resident in South Africa to be good ambassadors of the country, stressing that Nigerian and South African leaders will soon meet to discuss several issues bordering on their relationship.

“Those of you who have the opportunity to come here and represent us, make sure that you are representing Nigeria, you are all ambassadors of Nigeria. This means a lot of patience, restraint, self-respect and pride. You must have all these,” the President said.

According to him, those accusing him of locking them up have no case as himself was locked up for three and half years from his position as Head of State. He said: “But I assure you that after being in the military for 25 years, and getting to the highest rank and becoming head of state and under unusual circumstances. As head of state, I went straight to detention for three and half years; so those who accused me of locking them up, I too have been locked up; so what?”

Buhari said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) messed up Nigeria and that was why the people decided to vote for him.

He said: “They remember me more as chairman of PTF than as a former head of state, than a governor or a minister of petroleum. Inspite of the fact that it was during my time that I signed the contract for Warri Refinery, Kaduna Refinery, more than 3,500 lying pipes and more than 20 depot, we got the tankers off the road, we saved lives, we saved fuel, we save the road itself. But from 1999 till date, PDP has messed it up. That is why Nigerians decided to vote me. - See more at: http://www.exlinklodge.com/2015/06/buhari-to-probe-jonathans-97m-failed.html#sthash.mggy2APh.dpuf

Politics › Our Loss At The Last Election Is A Temporary Setback - PDP by morereb10(op): 10:54am On Jun 16, 2015
The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun state at the last general election, Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI), has described the loss of the party at the last election as a temporary setback, assuring the party faithfuls that it will bounce back in a big way before the next general elections in 2019.

GNI as he his fondly called by admires, stated this while hosting the nine lawmakers elected on the platform of the party at its Oke Mosan secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

He charged the legislators elected on the platform of the party to support bills seeking to improve the lot of Ogun people.

He emphasized that the welfare of the people of the state should be paramount to the lawmakers irrespective of their party affiliation, and urged them to block any bill that seeks to promote personal interests.

According to him,”this opportunity to serve your constituencies is a call to service. You must see yourselves as eyes and ears of the people to better their lot. Any bill that seeks to promote the well-being of our people should be wholeheartedly supported by all.”

“But I should say this and I will make myself very clear. Any bill that seeks to promote personal interest of anybody should be thrown away,” he averred. It would be recalled that Gboyega lost his bid to become the Governor of Ogun State to Ibikunle Amosun of the All Progressives Congress at the 2015 elections in Ogun State. - See more at: http://www.exlinklodge.com/2015/06/our-loss-at-last-election-is-temporary.html#sthash.9IysXOrV.dpuf

Celebrities › What You Will Never Know About Pay-as-you-watch TV by morereb10(op): 8:29am On Jun 16, 2015
The budget-conscious segment of the pay-Television market in Nigeria has been strident in its push for a pay-as-watch (PAYW) model. This push is encouraged by the use of the pay-as-you-go (PAYG) model in the telecommunications sector, which also adopted the per-second billing system after an initial reluctance.

Pay-As-You-Watch, most pay-TV subscribers are convinced, will free them from monthly contracts and introduce greater flexibility in how they watch television. More than that, many are convinced that the model is already in operation in South Africa and want its adoption in Nigeria.

There is no such thing as pay-as-you-watch TV in South Africa. What exists is the monthly contract model like we have in Nigeria and other countries of the world.

Pay-as-you-watch is often confused with pay-per-view (PPV). Are they the same? No. The PPV model allows a subscriber to watch some special events, usually of the high-ticket variety in sports and entertainment, by paying for such events in addition to having an active subscription.

This means that if pay-per-view was available in Nigeria, a subscriber would need to pay his/her monthly subscription to a pay-TV provider and then pay an additional sum-usually very expensive-to watch a high-ticket event like the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquaio fight for which boxing fans in the US paid $100 on top of their regular subscription. That is $100 for a two-hour fight.

In Nigeria, those who watched the fight on DStv’s SuperSport channel did so at no extra cost. Pay-per-view also does not exist in South Africa.

A question often asked is: Why can we not have a pay-as-you-go model for pay-TV as we have in telecommunications, where subscribers pay for what they use? - See more at: http://www.exlinklodge.com/2015/06/what-you-will-never-know-about-pay-as.html#sthash.qbmg87fZ.dpuf

Politics › My Worst Regret As INEC Chairman – Prof. Jega by morereb10(op): 8:17am On Jun 16, 2015
The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Monday reviewed his tenure as the boss of the electoral body and concluded that his only regret was that he was to a separate salary for INEC workers.
Jega spoke in Abuja during a retreat titled, “2015 general : Lessons and the way forward.” which was organised for the electoral officers of the commission where the report of the 2015 elections was reviewed.
He said apart from the special salary issue, the commission under his leadership performed well.
He said,

“We have done our best as a commission under very difficult circumstances and the major regret as I have acknowledged is that a major undertaking we made when we first resumed at the commission is to have a separate salary structure for the members of staff of the commission but we have not been able to achieve this

“And obviously this is one area where we still have to do a lot of work and put in a lot of efforts as we move towards the future and to improve.

“But apart from that, I don’t think we have done badly in terms of promoting the welfare and the wellbeing of the members of staff.

“We have ensured that salaries were paid regularly, we have ensured that there are a lot of opportunities for self improvement through the organisation of seminar and shop with our partners.”

“Again as I said, we could not have satisfied the expectations of everybody, we believe that we have done our best. I must say that not all of you are happy with some of the measures that we have introduced as a commission.

“The restructuring and reorganisation certainly could not have satisfied everybody because it required trimming down the size of the commission and also redefining schedule of responsibilities and putting square pegs in square holes as we called it at that time.”

Jega, who had insisted that he would leave INEC after the expiration of his tenure, said that the 2015 general elections were better than those of 2011.
He added that there was a lot of room for improvement and that as the country prepares for future elections, the commission must begin to reflect on what areas of further reforms it should focus its attention on - See more at: http://www.exlinklodge.com/2015/06/my-worst-regret-as-inec-chairman-prof.html#sthash.p4tS17wY.dpuf

Celebrities › Issuance Of US Visas Suspended Because Of Glitch In Database by morereb10(op): 7:28pm On Jun 15, 2015
If you applied for a United States visa on or after June 9th, then you could likely suffer some delay in receiving an answer as a computer glitch has forced the State Department to suspend the issuance of US passports and visas at its overseas diplomatic missions.

The glitch hit one of the agency's computer databases leaving overseas embassies and consulates unable to print visas, regular passports and travel documents.

Domestic passport issuance remains unaffected.

According to the US Department of website,

"We cannot bypass the legal requirements necessary to screen visa applicants before we issue for travel. As a result, there is a backlog of to be processed." - See more at: http://www.exlinklodge.com/2015/06/issuance-of-us-visas-suspended-because.html#sthash.4hupDVhw.dpuf
