Business / JP Morgan Makes Cash Investment In Nigerian Online Retailer Jumia by morgist(m): 8:40am On Oct 16, 2012
Africa’s fastest growing online retailer Jumia has, alongside South African online fashion retailer Zando, announced that U.S.-based J. P. Morgan Asset Management has injected funds into their operations.

J. P. Morgan Asset Management, a leading asset manager for institutions, is investing into their operations via a German holding company in a cash-for-equity investment.

Jumia, like Zando, was launched earlier this year with the support of Rocket Internet GmbH, the European Incubator of internet start-ups.

Zando has grown significantly since it has been launched and has become one of the top five online stores in South Africa.

Jumia’s operation in Nigeria has been at the front of e-commerce activities in Nigeria. It also operates in Egypt and Morroco.

Earlier, Kasuwa and Sabunta was rolled into one operation and became Jumia, in an effort by Rocket Internet GmbH to merge their African ecommerce operations.

Jumia co-founders and joint-CEO’s Tunde Kehinde and Raphael Afaedor are optimistic that Nigeria is going to become an e-commerce haven. According to the two, the investment is a real turning point for Jumia, and e-commerce in Nigeria.

“With this investment, we will strengthen our current footprint, offering our customers more brands, more categories and more services as well as improving operations; we are among the pioneers of e-commerce in Nigeria and this investment confirms that Nigeria will become a very large market in the very near future,” they said.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management Portfolio Manager Robert Cousin, who worked on the deal from New York, confirmed the transaction saying: “We are excited to partner with Jumia and Zando as the companies continue to expand their e-commerce presence in Africa.”

The e-commerce frenzy in Nigeria has become intense with the likes of Kamdora, Konga and Taafoo coming onto the online retailing scene.

Start-ups in Nigeria have been gathering interests from Investors within and outside the country. In July this year, the Nigeria-based Iroko Partners raised US$2 million from Sweden’s Kinnevik, an early investor in Groupon Inc. Iroko has previously raised $8 million from U.S.-based hedge fund Tiger Global in April as investors in emerging markets seek to tap into one of the fastest growing movie businesses in the world.

Paga, a Nigeria-based mobile payment company, also raised its first round of funding in May 2011 from Goodwell West Africa, a microfinance investment vehicle co-managed by investment manager Goodwell Investment and Alltheia Capital in Nigeria. It received another fund(undisclosed amount) into the business from Adlevo Capital, Omdiyar network, Acumen Fund and Capricorn Investment Group.

Celebrities / It’s Official: Chris Brown And Rihanna Are Back Together by morgist(m): 6:31pm On Oct 04, 2012
It seems to be all but official. Rihanna and Chris Brown are back together.

Celeb watchers have been tracking their moves all week in New York.

The Daily News reported that “multiple witnesses” saw the two “kissing” at a Meatpacking district club on Monday night, where they “disappeared into the bathroom together” for 20 minutes. The report, however, was called a “blatant lie,” by Power 105 DJ Suss-One, who was working that night at the club. He says he had his eye on the two all night, and they kept to the dance floor.

Brown has also been spotted leaving Rihanna’s hotel.

While all that was going on, Brown and his girlfriend Karrueche Tran appeared to split, as she tweeted, “Bye baby.”

Here at the Computer village we do downloads at up to 2 megabits per second and that is the fastest you have on user-to-user basis here. We are offering Nigerians speed, affordable, convenience and reliable service.”

Chief Executive Officer, Oxygen, Wande Adalemo tells Technology Times that in Computer Village, “we have over 6,000 different unique users already. We hope that we will be able to get over 10,000 subscribers on our network and then move in to another market clusters that we have around Lagos.”

The Oxygen network is built to handle over a thousand devices and having 4 gigabits per second capacity through-put to offer coverage across the entire Computer Village market cluster.

He says the network is embedded with links that makes it easier for users to connect to the internet as well as the free mapping service that allows users to view locations on the web.

On the Oxygen data service plan, Adalemo explains that “you can decide to get something done in one hour, there is a one hour plan for you or get something done in the next one week, there is one week plan for you or I’m monthly users, I need to save money upfront for the whole month, there is a monthly plan for you.”

According to him, Oxygen offers N200 for the two-hour plan with 24 hours validity; N500 for seven-hour plan with validity of seven days; N1,250 for 25 hours with a validity of 10 days; N4,500 for 100 hours with 30-day validity and N10,000 for 24/7 access.

Oxygen is offering an unlimited download limit on all these plans, “which is another advantage for Nigerians”, he explains.
