And you saying that MLS will suffer a major blow, let them punch us first. Last I check , MLs started from Aimlt in Nigeria, to 4 years Bsc Mls to 5 years BMLS. And after intern ship, we start in the civil service from Level9.
But sir, how does growth of other profession affect Drs?? if cleaners decide to become doc of cleaning and clearing, how does that affect me. The sky is big to accommodate everyone , develop your own field. You don't need to look for the down fall of others before you progress. I never asked u not to grow in ur profession, but if growth mean chaos then that's cancerous growth. America is over a 100years old, but when u tell an American, I want to go see my Doctor, he knows it's a Medical Doctor. Sadly, Nigeria despite being poorly ranked in health care, wen people say I want to see a Doctor, Johesu especially the Lab Technicians/Scientist they want people to know it's not a Medic they mean. |

Jman06: Assuming the above figures are factual, then the following should be noted:
1. They underwent further trainings upon arrival before being licensed to practice in those countries!
2. They jettisoned the "know it all" mentality of the average Nigerian-trained physician and accepted to work as teammates with other healthcare professionals to serve the patients better.
3.What you have is the statistics for Nigerian trained physicians working abroad, you don't have the figures for other Nigerian healthcare professionals who also practice abroad, so it'll be wrong of you to claim that Nigerian medical doctors are the only ones working abroad. 4.Many Nigerian politicians and elites go abroad to get treated of common ailments because they are aware that lack of teamwork in Nigerian hospitals constitutes a big hindrance to proper healthcare delivery. It is not always about lack of facilities like you are quick to claim. The part way for Nigerian Doctors to work abroad is clear. Write their board exams and get certified. No extra training. The partway for other healthcare professionals is clumsy, except nurses. Pharmacist have to do a full 52weeks retraining even with the bogus PharmD. It's a big shame for our system. Lab Scientist have to relinquish their megalomanic title to become technicians in Australia and phlebotomist in US. It's a jungle out there man. MBBS trumps it all and all the time. |

Lab scientist go to Australia and can only at best be given a lab technician title, thats after a regorious scrutiny that sees less than 5 entering the system in a decade. And we feel it's complacent because MLSD will make us Doctors in Nigeria. Can u work up to a hospital in nearby Ghana and be regarded to as a Doctor. Today I was in a forum were scientist were complaining because a Doctor mentioned that he is a Clinical Scientist, and they claimed the Doctor was overstepping his boundary, as only MLS could use such title. Such a big mess. Meanwhile scientists are calling themselves Chiefs, General practitioners, and Pathologist, titles which are exclusive to medics and no one is crying black blood. Such a shame of a Country. Doctors are drivers of the industry and Medical Educators by right, and we will not sit in the background and allow glorified technicians muddle things up. |

Jman06: They can't even properly treat malaria and typhoid!
I laugh at Nigerian medical doctors. They always claim to know it all, yet our politicians and wealthy elites go abroad to treat malaria!
I wish the national assembly could pass a bill making autopsies compulsory for all deaths in our hospitals. It'll help to expose the incompetencies of our medical doctors!! But the British prime ministers say there are over 5000 Nigerian trained Doctors in the UK and 12 migrate to the UK weekly. Also America has far more than 5000 Nigerian trained Doctors and Cuba claimed just above a thousand. I have not mention Australia, Ireland and Canada. If these guys see Nigerian Doctors as competent, then the problem here might me quackery, enabling environment or Johesu making the condition of service toxic and unpalatable. That being said the probability of a Politician who runs away from Nigerian hospitals because of Johesu, seeing a Nigerian GP in the UK or US is close to 20%. Rather pathetic! |

Can u single out Medical Laboratory Science , and explain more on how BMLS certificate is liability in Europe? . .
If you cannot.. Pls STOP Generalising this . .
A pharmacist certificate is a liability in Europe, as they have to do a full 52weeks course to even be considered to work. In fact no pharmacist can stay in Nigeria and process working in the UK. Meanwhile several Nigerian Doctors are being accredited in the comfort of their country. The part way is even worse for optometrist, radiographers and lab technicians/scientists.

To the mud abi? With the worst health indices in the world. Well, I would love to see change in those death traps called hospitals for the sake of the poor masses...They are death traps coz NMA and JOHESU have contributed in helping politicians to make them so. look at it from the perspective of the questions bein asked at the johesu rep They can't do without expos and handouts, how will she see the correlation. But here is the highlight: 1. Nigerian Medical Doctors are prepared for the international stage. 3 dignitaries visited Nigeria and without it being an NMA meeting highlighted Nigerian trained medical doctors and their impact to their economy I.e UK, Cuba and even the UK. 2. Johesu is only agitating and molding members for the civil service which is not sustainable. No private hospital owner will invest in residency for lab technicians or pharmacist. So their agitation ends when the hospitals are ceded to foreign owners 3. A pharmacist certificate is a liability in Europe, as they have to do a full 52weeks course to even be considered to work. Listening to Radio Nigeria today made me weep for Nigeria. The armophous body called Johesu keep trying to metamorphose to contend against the Nigerian Doctors.
One of such contention is a course which runs a semester system that can a most give u a 200-250 Unit credit load , contending with a Course who's credit load cannot be quantified. And even wanting to do 6years so they can start work from level 12.
When the Johesu leader was asked why everyone in the hospital wants to be called Doctor and what precedence it would hold for the average patient who is easily decieved, the question took him off balance. When asked about the role of consultant nurse or lab Scientist, when theres a pathologist, it was an even harder nut to crack. It's obvious that these set of Johesu leadership are clueless and only preparing for a Civil Service that is not sustainable, for as soon as the health sector is privatised many of these crude, cruel and baseless agigitators would be retrenched for redundancy.
4 years back the Cuban Prime Minister visited Nigeria and spoke about Cuban partnership with Nigeria, stating that over a thousand Nigerian trained medical doctors now make up the work force in Cuba, this speaks alot about the quality of the Nigerian Doctor if given an enabling environment. No mention was made of the number of Lab technicians and pharmacists. Also few weeks back the British prime minister said that over 5000 Nigerian trained Doctors now make of the work force in NHS, with 12 Doctors joining them weekly!, that's huge. Also, he never mentioned Lab technicians and pharmacists, yet why do these support staff arrogate so much importance to themselves when in fact the international community does not acknowledge their certificate.
It is on record that there is a rather clumsy pathway for Nigerian health workers except Doctors and nurses to practice in the UK. For example, Nigerian Pharmacist have to undergo a full 52weeks retraining for their certificates to be considered in the UK, get the term considered, it's even more cumbersome for Lab technicians, optometrist and radiographers, who are hardly taken seriously when they get to UK. Why then do these support staff make so much noise.
How many Nigerian trained pharmacist, lab scientist/technician or consultant cleaners are sort after by the UK?
Nigerian Doctors are indeed a special breed as UK even Conduct exams for them in Nigeria and seek modalities to be welcomed in the UK. Ireland, Australia and all speaking European countries welcome Nigerian Doctors with open arms. If Nigeria doesn't curtail the Cancerous group called Johesu, we might see a proliferation of these quacks returning Nigeria to the dark days of the Nigerian health sector. |

AlphaT1: Bros cool down, I know much about JHH and I just gave you the structure of their leadership, that structure is not found here in Nigeria. I don't have any issue with medics heading hospitals or any organization for that matter but it should be those with experience and qualification. Now do you want us to delve into the qualifications and experience of those medics heading JHH for the past 50yrs and compare with ours in Naija? You calling me myopic is just a proof of what I said earlier; the limited scope of knowledge, understanding and reasoning of a typical Nigerian-the reason being Nigerians don't like reading. Do you want us to go into the qualifications and leadership experience of our CMDs (in top FG teaching hospitals) one after the other and compare with the CEOs of those advance hospitals you mentioned earlier? At least my uncle was a CMD and he agreed with me that at best they go for 2-5 days management training sessions that they can hardly even remember the topics or titles not to talk of applying it. They only use those 2-5 days or even two weeks trainings for financial benefits, majority of them are not even interested in what the resource persons are teaching. Before you call me myopic again, CMDs in Naija are political appointments, CEOs of hospitals over here in USA are not.....Are political appointments in Nigeria most of the times, merit based? Sometimes you would not understand somethings until you travel outside that lawless country. Why has a Nurse or a lab Scientist or a Pharmacist with masters in management or administration not been the CEO of John Hopkins, May Clinic or Cleveland Clinic in the Last 50yrs?, why is it still headed by physicians?, why have they not caused unrest there or a Johesu faction there to cause a change. AlphaT1: The Nigerian health sector is in shambles, one of the worst in the world. There is no unity between NMA and JOHESU. An average Nigerian does not read and thus has limited scope of knowledge, understanding and reasoning. A medical doctor for instance has just MBBS and fellowship and then feels he is a demigod, all-knowing super-human, with no any other qualification at all; no MBA, MPA , MHM, etc and yet assumes he can manage people and d hospital effectively. He does not even have a diploma or certificate course in management, to him he is too big and that these courses are useless, he has never read a single book on management or leadership to improve himself. A consultant will oppress his juniors, residents will look down on M.Os, Drs will look down on JOHESU, Senior JOHESU members will maltreat junior ones etc etc. And with this typical Nigerian mentality, this consultant (with only MBBS and Fellowship certificates) finds himself in a leadership position (CMD, MD etc) and you are expecting him to perform lolz. Now the structure of the Nigerian health sector is such that you have these MBBS+Fellows or MBBS-only individuals from minsiter of health to CMDs, MDs, CMACs, governing boards etc leading the health sector and you expect any improvement lolz. Five years ago I challenged one of my friends who is an orthopaedic surgeon to read atleast two books per year and to also get some other qualifications, at least one (like an MBA, MPH, a PGD, or MSc etc), he was complaining about time, I asked him if he was busier than Ben Carson, a successful neurosurgeon and an author, he was challenged and he created time for it. Today his MBA has given him the position of country head in an int'l NGO, he is much more fulfilled and happier now. The CEO of Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) that you mentioned has BSc, M.D., fellowship, and a post-doc and has held several positions for many years before being appointed as CEO, so you can't compare him to what's obtainable here in Naija. Even his vice is a nurse with masters. The president of JHH also has an MBA.
Take a look at the leadership of JHH below:
