Phones / Re: How Did You Find Nairaland? by Mrval20(m): 10:47pm On Nov 10, 2016
I've always been an occasional visitor until 2013...I was in 400 Level and was confused about what branch to major in my final year. After lots of Google search, I wasn't satisfied because I wanted a Nigerian version of the advise I sought tongue
So I continued searching until I found this thread : https://www.nairaland.com/249270/electrical-engineering-aspirants-practitioners
It was like magic! Almost all my burning questions were already answered in that thread but I still had more to ask. That was how I joined this great forum and followed the people that helped me the most with the information I needed. Three years down the line and I've never, for a second, regretted the decision I made based on their advice. These smart Nairalanders made me join Nairaland: Naija.babe, Ajanle.koko, Net.otse and Wall.ie... God bless you all.

God bless Mr Seun too and all Nairalanders kiss

Thanks for sharing.

Generally, don't use ATMs situated at lonely places. Fear of being lynched (not even being arrested by the police) won't let any robber approach you at an ATM where there are several passers-by.

Nairaland / General / Your Take On People Being Arrested For Failing To Use A Pedestrian Bridge by Mrval20(m): 8:42am On Jun 11, 2016
Last week, a guy going for an interview was arrested at Ikeja Along bus stop for not using the pedestrian bridge. He was sweating and begging but the officials reluctantly locked him up. I learnt he would have to bail himself and might even get tortured.

I really think there should be other ways of fining defaulters other than arresting and locking them. I don't even hink this can be done in any developed country.

I discussed this issue with some friends yesterday and I felt like knowing what Nigerians think about it.

1. Via cadet programs, a form of scholarship but this is not common though.

2. Aircraft are very complex equipment so for it to be operated safely, the pilots have to be trained for that specific aircraft. For a pilot to operate an equipment, he must have a certain number of hours on it before being certified.

3. The principles are the same but details differ vastly hence the specialization.
Thanks, I'm cleared now.
Phones / Re: Best Data Plan Comparison Between MTN Etisalat Airtel GLO by Mrval20(m): 5:31pm On May 22, 2016
My experience :
Subscribed for the weekly MTN 750mb and it lasted for only three days without heavy usage or any downloads at all. Run from that plan, don't know about other MTN plans though.

Airtel speed is excellent and so is their data consumption rate, they're even worse than MTN. Run from Airtel generally, unless you don't have any other alternative.

The best plan remains Glo 3gig for 1.4k. The only problem with this plan being that Glo network is extremely bad recently and sometimes renders your hard earned data useless. I hope their network stabilizes soonest; I pray for them everyday.

This is a rare opportunity, thanks for creating this thread...

1. As an Electrical/Electronics Engineering graduate, what is the most cost effective way of becoming a pilot?

2. Why are pilots assigned to a specific airplane?

3. Does the mode of operation of different airplanes vary greatly? Like can you fly just about anything flyable after probably going through the manual?

Computers / I'm Giving Out This Software For Free by Mrval20(m): 10:07pm On Feb 11, 2016
I was one of the fifteen lucky winners of a multi-monitor software called Synergy ($29 value) from a page on Facebook called "Make Use Of".

But since I don't usually run a lot of programs simultaneously on my laptop, I thought someone here might really need this software more than I do. So, I'm giving my code out as a gift.

You can read more about the software here:
www.makeuseof.com/tag/use-laptop-like-external-monitor/

Send me a PM if you TRULY need this software so I can forward you my redemption code.

I stream with huge caution. For short videos (less than 10mins) I can stream. Maybe even upto 20mins if it's really interesting. Anything higher and I'm downloading a HD version using IDM. Their speed has spoilt me sha. I can't imagine using any of d GSM operators. This means I end up being pinned in Lagos. When I'm out of Lagos I'm not on the Internet unless I'm in Ibadan Porthacourt or Abuja where they have coverage.

Smile is also fast but their bill na die. ₦5,500 for 5gig

Shame on our network providers though. Spectranet and Smile really need to adopt some good marketing strategies and also extend their services to other part of the country. Just few people know about them

Spectranet user here and I can testify that they have got relatively cheap and appreciably fast connection. 8k for 25gig and I'm good to go for a month on all 7 devices
Sounds really interesting, probably the best deal out there too but I bet you still stream with caution,
unless you're not the video streaming type. And you just confirmed what I also heard about their network - FAST

Wallie:

Thanks for the info! By the way, I wasn't trying to do anything illegal nor do I have a reason for doing so. I'm not even based in Nigeria. I can now understand why people are hesitant.

My intention is honest and it stems from the fact that Netflix is opening up shop in a country where most people use mobile phones and data cost a fortune. Personally, I do stream Netflix to my cellphone daily on my commute home from work but that's because I have unlimited data with my carrier. As of today, I've used 11,931.53 MB (12GB) of data on my cellphone and my billing cycle ends tomorrow. And even at home, our broadband internet access is unlimited, and Netflix and YouTube are constantly being streamed.

As I alluded to, I'm trying to develop a solution to the problem but I want to better understand the pain-points before wasting my time and resources.

Ok, now I understand.
Well, most young Nigerians would only afford and exhaust 12GB daily through a 'backdoor'. Can't even imagine what these network providers would demand in exchange for such data. Though someone once told me that Spectranet data plans are relatively cheap. You might want to check their site to find out more.
There are also data re-sellers whose data are a bit cheaper than that of the network providers.
I hope this helps.

Others can also mention their data preference and experiences in Nigeria to help in your research.
Phones / Re: How To Watch Videos And Surf The Web Without Using A Lot Of Data by Mrval20(m): 6:32pm On Feb 04, 2016
Option 1: You can get 3gig for only 1k on glo network and make it work on your non Blackberry device. The processor of the device has to be Mediatek though to make tweaking your IMEI simpler. Doing this on non MTK devices is stressful and doesn't work sometimes. Once you've tweaked your IMEI, you subscribe to Glo BB plan and it works perfectly on your device. You can also share the network with your laptop or other devices. The speed of the network depends on your location. It lasts for one month.

Option 2: You can get 5gig on MTN network for only #70, #350 or #1000 daily, weekly or monthly respectively.
A software(don't want to call the name to avoid being banned), is then used to make the subscription work on your device. You can also share this network to your computer, with the help of another software installed on your computer.

I bet 5gig would be enough for you to stream to your satisfaction on a single day at the cost of only 70 Naira.
Wallie:
Since mobile phone data is very expensive, how do you do the following:
1. Surf the web for your favorite websites?
2. Watch videos on YouTube?
3. Watch Netflix?
4. Watch iRokoTV?
If you use Wi-Fi, where do you get your Wi-Fi from and how do you use it on-the-go? Or are people just stuck at internet cafes all day?
Thanks for your help!
I hope you do see this before it gets deleted, the forum kinda frowns on stuffs like this.
