Ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children - a report

June 11, 2009

[RAMALLAH, 11 June 2009] Today, DCI-Palestine is releasing a report which documents the widespread ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children at the hands of the Israeli army and police force Palestinian Child Prisoners: The systematic and institutionalised ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children by Israeli authorities.

The release of the report comes just days after an article was published in The Independent newspaper reporting the testimonies of two Israeli soldiers which detail the deliberate abuse of Palestinian children. One soldier is reported as saying that in an incident that occurred in a Palestinian village in March, he saw a lot of soldiers 'just knee (Palestinians) because it's boring, because you stand there for 10 hours, youre not doing anything, so they beat people up.

The report published today contains the testimonies of 33 children, one as young as 10 years old, who bear witness to the abuse they received at the hands of soldiers from the moment of arrest through to an often violent interrogation.

Most of these children were arrested from villages near the Wall and illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. There is evidence that many children are painfully shackled for hours on end, kicked, beaten and threatened, some with death, until they provide confessions, some written in Hebrew, a language they do not speak or understand.

A soldier [, ] pointed his rifle at me. The rifle barrel was a few centimetres away from my face. I was so terrified that I started to shiver. He made fun of me and said: 'shivering? Tell me where the pistol is before I shoot you.'

(Ezzat, 10 years old)

Disturbingly, the report finds that these illegally obtained confessions are routinely used as evidence in the military courts to convict around 700 Palestinian children every year. And the most common charge against these children is for throwing stones. Once sentenced, the children who gave these testimonies were mostly imprisoned inside Israel in breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention where they receive few family visits, and little or no education.

The report concludes that this widespread and systematic abuse is occurring within a general culture of impunity where in 600 complaints made against Israeli Security Agency interrogators for alleged ill-treatment and torture, not a single criminal investigation was ever conducted.

The report also contains recent recommendations made by the UN Committee Against Torture which expressed 'deep concern at reports of the abuse of Palestinian children when it reviewed Israels compliance with the Convention Against Torture in May 2009.

The report is now available on-line in PDF format: Palestinian Child Prisoners: The systematic and institutionalised ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian children by Israeli authorities.

Foreign AffairsKhomeni Calls Britain The Most Evil Foreign Power - Foreign Office Upset by muhsin(op): 5:46pm On Jun 19, 2009
UK Guardian Newspaper

Iran's ambassador to London was summoned to the Foreign Office this morning after the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, singled out Britain as Iran's foremost enemy. In his speech during Friday prayers, Khamenei played on the historic suspicions many Iranians have of Britain by hinting at its involvement in the demonstrations and describing it as "the most evil" of foreign powers.

He held up the Westminster MPs expenses scandal as a prime example of the corruption which he said was rife in many western countries.

Then he unleashed a thunderbolt – a warning not to be wooed by foreign enemies.

Western countries were "hungry wolves ambushing us and removing the diplomatic cover from their faces. Do not neglect these people," he warned.

"The outstanding diplomats of some western countries who have talked to us with diplomatic courtesy up to now, have, during the past few days, taken the masquerade away from their faces and are showing their true image.

"They are showing their true enmity towards the Iranian Islamic state and the most evil of them is the British government."

The mention of Britain triggered chants of "Marg bar Ingles" (Death to Britain) from the ranks of worshippers.

Brown intensified his criticism of Iran's handling of the election dispute today.

"We are with others, including the whole of the European Union unanimously today, in condemning the use of violence, in condemning media suppression," he told a news conference after a European Union summit in Brussels.

"It is for Iran now to show the world that the elections have been fair … that the repression and the brutality that we have seen in these last few days is not something that is going to be repeated," he said.

"We want Iran to be part of the international community and not to be isolated. But it is for Iran to prove … that they can respect these basic rights."

In playing the British card, Khamenei was appealing to traditional resentment of interference in Iran's affairs by Britain at the peak of its imperial power, while also tarring the demonstrators by association with a foreign power.

He took aim at other foreign elements, namely the "Zionist-controlled" western media and the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton. Without naming her, he contrasted her comments about human rights in Iran with the FBI raid on the Davidian cult headquarters in Waco, Texas, in 1993 that left 75 dead. The incident occurred in the early months of Bill Clinton's presidency.

Crew name arms’ owners
Written by Auwalu Umar, Kano, Benjamin Auta and Aisha Umar, Abuja

The huge consignment of weapons found in the Ukrainian cargo plane now detained at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano was procured by the Ministry of Defence of Equatorial Guinea, the crew members of the detained plane told security agents yesterday. They insisted that they were on their way to Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, to deliver the arms consignment from the former Soviet Republic of the Ukraine when the plane stopped over in Kano to refuel. Security sources in Kano had earlier said the plane was bound for Guinea Bissau.

Daily Trust learnt yesterday that the detained crewmen are eight in number, not four as was earlier reported. Of the eight, seven arrived aboard the plane, six of them being Ukrainians and one being a Nigerian. The eighth detained person, security sources said, is a Nigerian who came to Kano from Lagos in order to facilitate the refueling and early departure of the arms-laden plane. He is said to be an official of an airline in Lagos.

Source also told Daily Trust that the detained crewmen attempted to bribe the airport security operatives so as to be allowed to take off after refueling, but the operatives turned down the offer, which was said to be a substantial amount of money in hard currency.

Commander of the Nigeria Air Force base in Kano, Air Commodore Ishaku Umar, was sighted at the Kano Government House yesterday, where he went to brief Governor Ibrahim Shekarau on the preliminary report on the case.

It was gathered that a delegation from Defence Headquarters in Abuja is billed to arrive in Kano today for further investigation. Another delegation from the Ukrainian Embassy in Abuja is also expected in Kano today.

Amidst all the controversy, all the security agencies in Kano and Abuja refused to brief newsmen on the results of their investigations. Officials at the airport kept sealed lips and refused to allow newsmen near the detained plane.

And in Abuja, efforts to obtain comments from the military and security agencies were firmly rebuffed. Director of Information and Public Relations of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Group Captain Sadiq Shehu declined to speak yesterday, saying he had not been briefed. He said, “I cannot say anything about the matter because I have not been briefed about it.” The Russian made plane with registration number-CAK and its crew were detained at the NAF wing of the MAKIA.

Also several calls made to the out-going Director of Defence Information, Colonel Christopher Jemitola, were not answered. Our reporters could also not obtain any comments from officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who said “it is a security matter.” At the Ukarainian, Equatorial Guinean and Guinea Bissau embassies, no officials agreed to speak on the matter.

The detained Ukrainian plane had stopped over for refueling at MAKIA at about 4 am on Wednesday when Customs and Immigration officers noticed some defects in the information supplied by the crew.

Security operatives also became suspicious of the crew’s inability to declare in the form what the cargo plane was carrying.

Security sources said there were eight heavy crates of various weapons and ammunitions on board the plane including rifles, machine guns, rocket launchers, mortars and howitzers. Even though the crewmen claimed that they were going to Equatorial Guinea-Bissau, there were strong suspicions among the security agents that they were gun running for Niger Delta militants.

The thing with these deluded, brainwashed Christians on this board is getting freaking sick, wallahi.
The demoralizing atrocities committed by non-Muslims on this earth cannot even be said, for you'll end up writing volumes of books. Yet one misguided ordinary Nigerian is here, recklessly and tactlessly, saying who kills Osama's father, this and that. Pathetic.

Any way, let me call your attention to sth.: a Muslim is a brother to a Muslim living wherever on this planet. If Osama takes a retaliatory actions over, for instance, the killings of Palestinians, Afghans, Somalis, etc Muslims he did a justifiable and rationale action.

@Tudor,

You, alone, seems more stubborn and strong headed, I understand. You claim yourself an atheist yet you are always on the vain backing Christians, forgetting the mind-boggling utterances made by noetic2 and the rest against your "belief". Or I forget, you folks are all under the same umbrella. So good luck.
IslamRe: Islam... D religion of d educatd n d wise by muhsin(m): 4:36pm On Jun 18, 2009
noetic2:
This is ridiculous.

reading and writing has little or nothing to do with literacy. Can they think in arabic?
A child is taken to islamic scholars at the age of 4 to cram and memorise the words of a language he has no understanding of, and u call the literacy.
can u mushin think in arabic? why do u think the koran is thought in arabic? Its simply because of the "incredibly nefarious" things it contains.

How can u read the english koran and still be a muslim? you need to read and digest allah's thoughts towards u as stated in the koran.

As for the northern muslims, nothing in their character and intolerance shows that they are educated/literates.
Here is what the word literate is defined:
lit·er·ate
adj.
1.
a. Able to read and write.
b. Knowledgeable or educated in a particular field or fields.
2. Familiar with literature; literary.
3. Well-written; polished: a literate essay.
n.
1. One who can read and write.
2. A well-informed, educated person.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/literate

LOL grin
In what language? Answer: Anyone.
Is Arabic not a language? Answer: Yes, it is.
Whose words deserve to be called silly? Answer: noetic2, of course.
Think again.
