POMPEY IN THE BLOOD
By Nurudeen Obalola
Published: Wednesday, 30 Jul 2008

John Westwood says he is 45 going on 16 and it is not difficult to understand why.

John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood in his unique Pompey costume.

For one, the Portsmouth-based football fan (fanatic?) leaves no one in doubt as to the club he supports.

During match days, he stands out for his weird dress sense, or lack of it. Because, whatever the weather, John is in his boxer shorts, a waistcoat, which has no buttons, and a top hat that stretches towards the skies.

Everything is painted in Portsmouth‘s blue and white and John is always a spectacle. A moving, breathing spectacle that follows Pompey everywhere in the world and was in Abuja for the inaugural Tinapa Invitational Soccer Fiesta, which held on Saturday and Sunday at the National Stadium.

“My family says I‘m crazy because of the way I‘ve been supporting my club. They could be right because at times I feel I‘m not right in the head, maybe I’m 16 mentally,” he said, a cigarette dangling in his right hand, as people passed and paused to behold the show right at the entrance of the Transcorp Hilton.

Some even cut into this interview to take pictures with the heavily tattooed mobile Portsmouth billboard. John was game, making funny faces and posing in various ways.

Perhaps, John‘s family was willing to tolerate his bizarre way of showing support without complaining. That is if it was limited to him appearing half naked in the full glare of the public and leaving his day job to follow Pompey around the globe as the unofficial mascot.

But John, who is regarded as Portsmouth‘s number one fan, opened a new phase in the art of supporting a club when he changed his name.

“I became, officially, in 1999 John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood and my family just gave up on me. They couldn‘t believe I could go to such lengths, but nobody can understand my love for this club.

“It‘s the only club I‘ve ever supported and I became a fan when I was 11. Portsmouth FC is my life and that‘s why it has to reflect in my documents. I just had to do the name change,” he said.

Supporting Portsmouth is indeed John‘s life. He has not missed a single Pompey game in 20 years, regardless of wherever the match is taking place.

There is this story of one match he almost missed in Hong Kong. It was one of those games many fans would see as a not-very-meaningful pre-season friendly and would not bother much about.

Definitely not Mr. Portsmouth Football Club Westwood.

According to one account, John and friends, Paul Allen, 31, and Andy Walshe, 30, were supposed to travel to Hong Kong with two other Portsmouth fans but delays due to flooded roads meant that by the time they got to the airport, boarding had been completed and the plane was already on the runway ready to take off.

It looked like it was the end of the trip, but John was determined to watch his beloved Pompey live.

“I made a few calls and although I couldn‘t get everyone sorted with flights I got something arranged for a few of us,” John said.

He got alternate flights via Helsinki, but only three seats were available, Mr. Portsmouth and Walshe, as the organisers, got first pick on the three available seats leaving Allen and the other two to decide who got the last one by tossing a coin.

“I won the toss, and the two other guys who were with us lost out,” Allen said.

Allen, who is also a big Pompey fan, believes John‘s dedication to the club is unrivalled.

“We‘d do anything to see Portsmouth. It‘s the first time I‘ve been out of Europe and I had a great time. John did sterling work for us to get us there. He‘s a diehard Pompey supporter,” he said.

John‘s love for Pompey was brought into sharper perspective when he revealed that he was not a rich man whom money meant little to.

“I‘m a book seller in Portsmouth. I sell all kinds of books and I guess I make enough from the business to afford the trips. I don‘t really care what it costs; so long as it‘s Portsmouth playing I must be there,” he said with a peculiar light in his eyes.

The father of two teenagers, aged 17 and 13, said it was his first time in Africa and he was impressed with what he met.

It was also Portsmouth‘s first time on the continent and Manchester United‘s first time in West Africa. John echoed what the players and officials of the two Premier League clubs said about Nigeria and its people.

He said, “Nigeria is a great place and the people are fantastic. I‘ve been shown love by everybody and I‘ve taken so many pictures.

“If the rest of Africa is like this then it‘s a great continent, filled with warm people. I‘ve had a good time here and would love to return. I hope Portsmouth gets invited again.”

John, whose vast knowledge of the history and the goings on in the Pompey dugout makes him something of an expert on technical matters, backs Nwankwo Kanu in the transfer dispute between the Super Eagles captain and the Portsmouth hierarchy.

“Kanu is a fantastic footballer and he deserves a two-year deal. I don‘t know what else the management wants from him.

“He scored the goal that took us to the FA Cup final and then scored the only goal in the final. Give him three years if he wants, that‘s what I say,” he said.

The coming of Peter Crouch, a player similar in style and stature to Kanu, is seen as a sign that the Nigerian might not get to play much next season.

John disagrees, saying, “I‘m sure they can play together and get us a good number of goals. With Crouch, Kanu and Jermain Defoe, I believe we‘ve got a great combination of strikers who‘ll get us goals in the new season.”

Portsmouth‘s opponent in the second match of the Tinapa fiesta, English and European champion Manchester United, is one of the most popular clubs in the world.

But to John, there is only one club worth mentioning.

“Manchester United? Never heard of them. I only know about Portsmouth and you better believe it,” he said tongue-in-cheek when our correspondent teased John that Pompey would get beaten on Sunday.

As predicted, the ‘unknown‘ United beat Portsmouth 2-1, but Mr. Portsmouth Football Club Westwood was not bothered. He was probably planning his next trip with Pompey. To the North Pole, if that‘s where the club decides to go next.

15-year-old girl donates 10,000 shoes to poor children
By Tobi Soniyi, Abuja
Published: Wednesday, 30 Jul 2008

A 15-year-old Nigerian girl based in Philadelphia, United States of America, Miss Chierika Ukogu, has donated 10,000 pairs of shoes to Nigerian children who have no shoes.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Ukogu said that she visited Nigeria from the US in 2003 and was shocked to see children walking barefooted.

She said she was moved with compassion and when she returned to the US, she started soliciting for shoes and sandals.

Some 7,000 of the shoes were shared to the motherless children’s homes in and around the Federal Capital Territory while the balance of 3,000 were to be distributed to indigent kids in Ukpor and its environs, in Anambra State.

She said, “About five years ago, I travelled to Nigeria and I went to Ukpor, my home town, and I noticed many children walking around with no shoes in this modern day.

“The opportunity came last year when I was invited to a business camp in the USA where I wrote several articles on the plight of the Nigerian indigent children and my experience in Ukpor.”

Ukogu, a student of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Philadelphia, said her articles and proposal at the camp attracted publications in several US- based journals.

“After the publications, I was able to collect over 10,000 flip-flops (shoes) from donors through my school, and my father volunteered a section of his garage where they were stored.

“The donations have been coming in their thousands because of the willingness of the people to help me in my plight.”

To make the project formal and to facilitate the shipment of the shoes to Nigeria, Ukogu said that she formed a non-governmental organisation duly registered in the USA, known as Flip Flops for Africa.

The fact that DSTV has existed for years provides a benchmark for entrants.

Have you heard about Coil? The company that wants to overtake google search engine. They know what Google did and in their interview they also mentioned that "Rome was not built in a day". they have set a target date in about 4 years ' time where they 'll overtake Google to become e'one's fav search engine.

HiTv's performance is instead emphasizing what people call "Nigerian factor". You need to compete internationally and don't just rest on your local competitors (like Trend et al).

If they know they want to concentrate solely on 'ball, they sholda alerted consumers - remember, not e'one likes the global game. wink

PoliticsRe: Has Fashola Really Done Anything In Lagos State? by Mustay(m): 10:59am On Jul 30, 2008
To be fair, I rate Fashola 50% even though I voted him not.

To achieve the Mega city status, he's taking massive infrastructural development decisions and I thank God he 's a lawyer 'cos it's obvious most Lagosians take the law for an arse and they just think they can do anything they like. e.g Landlords having houses on canals - how wicked can that be?

Most of our problems are cause by us.

The latest I heard was he ordering CCECC to reconstruct the road they 'did' at the LASU - Igando area. These people just do nonsensical jobs and collect contract money. 3 months later, their work is in a terrible state.

It takes time and unlike UMYA who doesn't seem to realise hez only got 3 years, FASH knows the urgent treatment Lagos needs!
IslamRe: Muslims Please Beware Of These So-called Islamic websites! by Mustay(m): 10:28am On Jul 30, 2008
They even have a page for POSITIVE Muslim Feedback and NEGATIVE Muslim Feedback

On the POSITIVE Muslim Feedback page, it reads:

Believe it or not there are actually some Muslims in the world who support what we are trying to do! There ARE Muslim men and women who are enjoying their sensuality without the usual patriarchal constraints, shame and guilt of traditional Islamic society. Some Muslims do not like what we have to say but support our right to say it. We agree, "Let Allah be the judge not man".

Please note that all names have been changed to protect the authors' confidentiality. Many would be jailed or even executed by their "Muslim" brothers if there identities were to be made public.

On the Negative Muslim Feedback page, it reads:

Unlike most Muslim countries where free speech and dissent are strictly controlled and repressed we encourage feedback, both positive an negative. It is only with free open discussion that we can cast light on the dark corners of the world. It is our effort to promote freedom for Muslim women and to espouse a more tolerant and sensual and forgiving form of Islam than that which rules the Muslim world today.

All replies are exactly as they were written including spelling errors those who wrote to us in CAPITAL letters! It is great to let hear these "Muslims" and to see the kind of intolerant hate and violence that they promote in the name of Allah. We don't need to add anything more!!

However, not all Muslims hate us! Click here for some Positive Muslim Feedback

"Of course, all is not negative check out some of our Positive Muslm Feedback!"

This is emphasized on the Negative Muslim Feedback page

Here's one I found - it's more of a pseudo porn site for muslim shocked shocked shocked shocked sad

A CALL TO FREE THINKING MUSLIMS AND EX-MUSLIMS:

World Art Erotica is a resource of links and information for those who are working for a more tolerant and sensual version of Islam than that which is espoused today.

For liberal moderate Muslims, Ex-Muslims and those who are interested in promoting more tolerance and social freedoms in the Islamic world we would like to offer this page as a resource. Muslim moderates can no longer be silent. For too long they have said nothing whilst fanatics have hijacked the religion.

Speaking personally, as a former Muslim I am proud to be part of this effort. I know that I can stand in front of Allah (God) and be judged because my heart and conscience are clean. I think Allah pays much more attention important aspects of a person's morals and behaviour than their sexuality.

I do not think it is wrong to be a "Gay Muslim". That is for Allah to judge. Neither is it wrong to be a sexually liberated Muslim woman who desires sex with more than one man. And only Allah can decide whether it is wrong to leave the religion. No religion should use the death penalty to keep it's members as is the case with Saudi Arabia and Iran amongst others. Only the Mafia retains it's members in this way.

We would like to invite all Practising Muslims who are liberally oriented, Ex-Muslims, Feminist Muslims, Gay Muslims and other related entities to contribute stories, articles and information about sexuality and feminism in the Muslim world. Also information on contact ads, clubs and other organizations that promote a more liberal tolerant Islam.

We will give complete confidentiality to all submissions unless you wish otherwise.

Here are some examples of brave Muslims challenging "traditional" interpretations of Islam:

    * Salaam: A resource for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Muslims. Creates and fosters a supportive and understanding environment for lesbian, gay and bisexual Muslims to socialize, and to offer each other support in reconciling and coming to terms with their spirituality/culture/heritage and their sexual orientation. Languages: English, Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Somali, French, Urdu, Kutchi, Punjabi & Italian.
    * In the Name of Allah: the world's first documentary to explore the complex intersections of Islam with Gender and Sexuality.
    * Al-Fatiha:an international support group for gay, lesbian, bixexual and transgendered Muslim.
    * Secular Islam: Institute for the Secularization of Islamic Society
