I knew someone would mention this. So many threads have been created about this in the past.

As much as separation of powers is preached, it appears more about a theoretical practice especially when it concerns this funding of a thing. Inasmuch as this thread is about SC, we see what happens in some states and the apparent conflict of interests - how much more for the apex?

@OP, I get you especially the last sentence in that reply to my last post. Just for the records, the EXECUTIVE, LEGISLATURE AND JUDICIARY make up our 3 arms wink

Front page material.

It appears people don't sit down, think and reflect and not necessarily rush into conclusions. NL is an apt reference. Media seem to be smarter than the police when they report incidents. Not saying that police can't deceive or hide from us if we leave it totally to them but when we read from the media, we should also ANALYZE for propaganda itself is a form of war.

@OP Good one but if any one reads your post, s/he could think the SUPREME COURT is the 3rd arm of government instead of the JUDICIARY. Perhaps, you could give some info about the Judiciary then focus on how the supreme court fits into the whole stuff. That way, there's a good understanding of the arm cool

PoliticsRe: Why FG Wants ASUU Strike To Continue by Mustay(m): 9:55am On Sep 26, 2013
Perhaps, government thinks by acceding to ASUU’s demands, other labour unions might toe the same path at the slightest excuse.
ASUU didn't go on strike on the 'slightest excuse'; we need to.understand the timeline of this agreement and steps pressure groups or unions take before taking the ultimate decision of strike. If it was by this logic, the Minisiter of Health would have taken the back seat when health workers went on strike, instead he quickly resolved it.

This stuff is an agreement, an agreement in which GEJ was actually part of the government too. Funny, the Minister of Education can't resolve this stuff alone but both parties did AGREE on ways to implement the demands of ASUU, hence we Madam NOI's 'go ahead' as it concerns money and planning.

Well, ASUU knows the kind of government we have, they can easily renege on agreements; the more reason why those who say lecturers should 'manage', go back to classes continue with the negotiation are wrong - government would not even give them an arm.

Truth is, we don't hold our leaders responsible - they're not really accountable to us. That's why we can continue shuffering and shmiling like 200 million mumus for people who are being taken care of with public resources.

@naptu2 Thanks. I can't believe it took 2 pages to get facts and not speculations! Chai, it isn't a must to comment, Nigerians seem to peddle thoughts/conspiracy theories on their head simply because it's easy to put there.

One is well aware it occurred during Gen YG's regime and our foreign policy then too was African when we were playing BBA. Ironically, this change to LHD is found on history books, 'know Nigeria' materials etc. Thanks again naptu, Nigerians need to really know their country before jumping into things!!!

The viewing centre was created by the governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan. He is an Arsenal
supporter. I met him once while playing tennis. For some reason he didn’t seem very impressed by my love of
Leicester City. I simply don’t understand why
Nigerians like good things - the big teams are the Arsenal etc. We pretty much like success. Wjilst I can understand why he supports Leicester, since that's his home town, a typical Lagosian would've supported NPA/Julius Berger some years ago no matter their status in the league.

The comedian who anchored the programme took quite a shine to me…..

“Ahhh give it up for the white man, where are you from”?

This was followed by ten minutes of him royally taking the **** out of me. I understood about one word in ten, but by the reaction of everyone else, it was obviously very amusing. So much for being inconspicuous.
Lol cheesy Dem dey use you do mugu experiment.

The quote by the comedian made me remember Keshi's "white dude" to the MAlawian coach and he insists it's no racism!
Anxious to appear as inconspicuous as possible I tried to sneak past, not drawing too much attention to myself, convinced I was about to be arrested. However quite the opposite. We were greeted with cheers of “Good morning sir, well done, how far?”.
This is the main point for me here! The complex thingy!!! Nigerians can be so good to foreigners and you wonder why we're hostile to ourselves. This happens daily - we want to impress any foreigner to the detriment of our people. Very annoying. It's full of deception!!!

Methinks this is the fear of the 'known unknown'. Was beginning to nod my head to ibkaye's keyboard rhythms till she was giving you escapist routes - you just need to wait till then. You'd need a counsellor or medical expert to assuage your fears and give you advise on how best to handle yourself. Sometimes, what you just need is some people talking to you and you'd be swayed in a jiffy - this just kinda remind me of a lady who actually knew about PP depression and was irritated by her own baby until she finally let out to her husband who took her to the doctor and let her close friend know about it.

As for your sis, the best for you is to learn from the driver's experience this time, don't put the driver on the passenger's seat wink

Even when pressed, there's still control - that's why we're adults!!! The big difference between us and kids is control. You can never be to hurry to do the right things - I remember when I was young, when it comes to toilet etiquette, leave the place the way you met it and way you'd love to meet it. 2legit2qwt: I'm totally against cohabitation. It's the reason why we have so many children in single-parent families. Men don't wanna commit to their partners, women are also trying to keep their options open and all of these are leading to societal decay and degrading values. Broken families everywhere, children lacking in role models and big reason why our society is breaking down by the day
Spot on. We're having so many values being changed in the name of 21st century, independence and some other warped ideologies. The family system is gradually dying in the name of what Yorubas call "olaju" (opening your eyes). Unfortunately, we're not opening it like the Lion, who had a wide perspective when he sees!

PoliticsNOA Proposes Jail Term For Abuse Of National Symbols by Mustay(op): 7:29am On Sep 17, 2013
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has proposed to the National Assembly an amendment to the Ordinance Act in order to allow stiffer penalties, including jail terms for abusers of Nigeria's national symbols.

The Director General of NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri, made this known yesterday in Abuja, at the second National Symbols Day in Abuja.

He said the proposal was aimed at reducing the level of abuses on the Nigerian national symbols.

He said national symbols were unique features of different countries across the globe.

Omeri observed that abuses of national symbols by citizens was an act of irresponsibility and negligence on the national integrity.

He revealed that the bill for amendment of the Act had passed first reading, in the House of Representatives, adding that as soon as the National Assembly returns from recess, the bill would proceed to the second reading.

"NOA is seeking the amendment of the Ordinance Act to make wrong display of the national symbols, defacing of same and other treatments of our National Symbols attract greater sanctions," Omeri said.

Omeri also said that the agency had written to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) requesting that September 16 every year be declared 'National Symbols Day.'

He said many nations across the globe have dedicated one day every year for national symbols as a way of bringing attention to bear on the things that unite them.
"We believe that the positive values embodied by our national symbols can naturally evoke certain attitudes and emotions towards our nation."

"We believe our national core values as enumerated in Section 2, sub-section 23 of the 1999 Constitution are expressed in our national symbols and should further find practical expression in the manifestation of those values by Nigerians through the inspiration they draw from our national symbols," he added.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Ambassador Sani Bala, said the two-day conference was geared towards reviewing the progress and building consensus on actions that will harness the nation’s contributions to human resources challenges in the country.

I remember when this kinda discussion was on NL some years ago concerning Adaura Achumba - I really don't care about 'forming' et al, my only concern is that there's no sense in not being able to convey the message to listeners thus creating a communication gap. Presently, there's this guy I come across on City 105.1FM, I don't know his name yet but mehnnnn, I go just dey vex when I hear am.

Definitely, good English must be spoken but if we want to hear foreigners speak, we know where to get them. These guys are some examples that 'connect' - Femi (Cool FM) & Dieko Gilbert (i FM). There are also some other examples. I do notice some others have this accent thingy but it's not necessarily fake.

All the , Dan Foster serves as a case study - ultimately, the people want to connect with you. Speaking bad English isn't the same as a Naija accent duh!!!

Did you know that the most 'dangerous' time you spend in the toilet could very well be the moment you flush the toilet. That's when germ filled droplets are propelled into the air. So just in case you were standing by, looking earnestly down to be sure you've done a good job of flushing, that's when you are more likely to 'catch' something.

So flush the toilet with the seat covered. Take a peek afterwards to be sure you've done a good job though

PhonesCellphone Saves Man's Life From Polar Bear Attack by Mustay(op): 3:28pm On Sep 15, 2013
This is an interesting news for Nat Geo Wild followers:

The small Canadian town of Churchill, Manitoba is known as the polar bear capital of the world, and for good reason. The area is home to both 900 or so year-round human residents and the western Hudson Bay polar bear population, and sometimes, inevitably, the twain shall meet.

Interactions between Churchillians and polar bears used to be quite frequent, and rarely ended well for the bears, which were all too often shot on sight. Over the last three decades or so, that has changed: the town dump, which used to attract bears into town, has been closed, and the guns that are fired in the direction of polar bears these days fire only firecracker shells — explosive ordinance which creates a loud ‘bang’ and ideally scares the bears away.

In 1982, the Manitoba Department of Conservation established the Polar Bear Alert Program, with a dedicated number for residents to report bear sightings. There is also a holding facility, more popularly known as the “Polar Bear Jail,” in which the more persistent intruders are held for 30 days before being flown out onto the sea ice far from town.
https://static.ddmcdn.com/gif/storymaker-svalbard-photos-1209172-514x322.jpg

Even so, inevitably, sometimes polar bears sneak into downtown Churchill without detection, which is why folks leave house and vehicle doors unlocked — just in case somebody needs to leap to safety. And even the most experienced and cautious Churchill veteran can find themselves surprised by a bear, which is just what happened to one man over the weekend.

According to the Winnipeg Free Press, Garett Kolsun — a border agent hired by Canadian Customs to inspect grain ships that put in to Churchill’s port — was walking home in the early hours of Sunday morning when the bear appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

Kolsun himself picks up the story, in an interview with Canadian broadcaster CTV:

“I stopped and I turned around to face the bear,” he said. “It was already there, right on top of me. I started shouting, yelling, screaming, waving my arms, running backwards to keep my eye on the bear.”

Kolsun said he ended up trapped on the porch of a bakery … It pinned him against the door and swiped at him with his paw. The bruin, which stood about 1 1/2 meters tall, also sank his teeth into Kolsun’s hip, although Kolsun says that, at the time, he didn’t even realize the bear had punctured his skin.

“The bear’s nose was inches away from me. I didn’t know where else to go. I was just (thinking), ‘what can I do to get away from this bear?’ That’s all I kept thinking about. I didn’t want to be a stat.”

So Kolsun dug into his pocket, and pulled out … his cellphone.

“I was hoping anything I would do would give me an opportunity to get away from it, I was trying anything at that point,” he told CTV. ”I was trying anything at that point. I was screaming, yelling, waving my arms, trying everything and it just kept chasing me and chasing me. I was just hoping for the best and, luckily, it worked.”

The light from the cellphone startled the bear, which backed up a little and knocked over a flower pot. With the bear briefly distracted, Kolsun took off. He ran for several blocks, looking for a home with lights on; when he saw some people sitting on a deck, he ran toward them. By that time, the bear had stopped chasing him.

In shock, he initially had no idea he had been scratched and bitten, but once his injuries were apparent, friends took him to hospital. After a tetanus shot and some bandaging, he was discharged, and reported for work on schedule on Monday.

The bear was a young male, which is to be expected: older bears have learned to skirt the town on their way to the sea ice, whereas younger ones are more reckless and generally less adept hunters, so more likely to be attracted by the smells of, say, a restaurant. This one has likely learned the lesson that many bears before him have learned: after the attack, it was captured and is now doing 30 days in the Polar Bear Jail.

Asked about resident’s reaction to the weekend’s incident, Churchill mayor Mike Spence explained to the Winnipeg Free Press that, ”it’s something we live with. It’s part of what we do.”

texting text message

Do your friends take an abnormally long time to respond to your texts? Are the messages they send back shorter than usual? Do you catch them making edits for a long time? If so, you may have a problem. Everyone’s lying to you.

A Brigham Young University study pitted 100 students from two large universities against each other. Using a computer, they were each asked 30 questions and told to lie “in about half” of their responses. Researchers found that people who lie in texts, social networks, or over instant messaging take 10 percent longer to compose their message, make a lot more edits, and write shorter responses than usual.

Not that you’ll know if they’re lying: According to Tom Meservy, BYU professor of information systems, humans can only detect lies about 54 percent of the time. It’s even harder over the Internet.

“Digital conversations are a fertile ground for deception because people can easily conceal their identity and their messages often appear credible,” said Meservy. “Unfortunately, humans are terrible at detecting deception. We’re creating methods to correct that.”

Of course, it may take some people an extra long time to tell the truth. We’ve provided an example below.

To try and learn more truth about how people lie, BYU researchers may use the Xbox Kinect to track the movements of liars.

Of course, as Gizmodo suggested there could be another reason people are taking a long time to respond to your texts. They just may not like you. cheesy cheesy cheesy

PhonesLying Takes 10% Longer Whilst Chatting by Mustay(op): 2:50pm On Sep 15, 2013
You’re in the middle of a texting conversation when the other person suddenly stops for a long pause before responding.

What does it mean? Maybe they got a call, got distracted by something else, or their thumbs needed a break. But if your last missive was about something heady, it’s also possible they’re taking the time to cook up a lie.

Researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU) asked more than 100 college students to respond to 30 questions each that were generated by a computer and texted to the participants. In half of their responses, the students were asked to lie. They found that when the students were lying, it took them 10% longer to send the text message, and they made more edits than usual.

According to the researchers, people are only able to detect when someone is lying to them in person about 54% of the time — there are behaviors that some people swear are giveaways of mendacity, like not being able to look people in the eye, or fidgeting. So it’s incredibly difficult to identify when someone is doing so online or over the phone. During texting conversations, you can’t hear the other person’s voice or see their facial expressions — which makes it easier to get away with an untruthful response. (A 2011 study found that people are more likely to lie while texting than in face-to-face conversations or video conferences for just this reason, and Manti Te’o's catfish experience highlighted how easily it’s done on social media.)

But while digital conversations are easy to manipulate, the results suggest that some patterns, such as the delay in texting fibs, could become cues for reading into the hidden meanings of voice or text communications. Granted, it was a small study, and not a real-life setting, but the researchers say their findings raise interesting questions about how the validity of other online transactions, such as communications on social media feeds and chat rooms, might be interpreted when it comes to issues of security and personal safety. “We are starting to identify signs given off by individuals that aren’t easily tracked by humans. The potential is that chat-based systems could be created to track deception in real-time,” said study author Tom Meservy, a BYU professor of information systems in a statement about the study.
