The Wife of Ondo state Governor, Chief Mrs Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu has called for legislations that would ensure stiffer penalties for rapists, child abusers and predators. Mrs Anyanwu Akeredolu spoke in Akure, the state capital during a “Walk Against rape” to raise awareness about the increase in rape cases in Nigeria. The walk is coming on the heels of the high rate of rape and child defilement incidence in Ondo state which has been a concern to Mrs Anyanwu Akeredolu. The awareness walk which began from the Deji’s palace at Oja oba to A division police station in Akure had personalities from the Ministry of Women Affairs, FOWOSO, BRECAN, BAAF, among others in attendance. The Governor’s Wife who was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development Mrs Titi Adeyemi said all hands must be on deck to nip rape in the bud in society. She further said the sensitization programme should serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of the social vice in the state saying the office of the first lady is ready to bring all cases of rape in ondo state to a logical conclusion. The Deji of Akure,Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi also assured that Akure kingdom would synergise with government and relevant non governmental organizations to eradicate rape and child defilement in the state. By Oluwaseun Akingboye, Akure SOURCE : THE GUARDIAN Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has pleaded with the Federal Government to urgently review the revenue formula to enable states and local governments to pay the new N30, 000 minimum wage. He said Ondo State was not against the new minimum wage but that the Federal Government should review the revenue allocation sharing formula, by giving more money to states and councils to enable them implement the new minimum pay. The governor stressed that his administration would support the implementation of the new wage, noting that his administration was committed to the welfare of the state’s workers. He declared that in spite of shortfalls in revenue, the state government would not deprive the workers of their entitlements and benefits. Also speaking with The Guardian on the matter, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Donald Ojogo, affirmed that Akeredolu has always restated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers in the state’s service. However, Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ondo State chapter, Sunday Adeleye, has revealed that the unions were waiting for the National Income Salary and Wages Commission (NISWC) to release the template for the new remuneration. He said the timetable was not out and that its release by the Federal Government would form the basis for negotiation in Ondo State as organised labour could not negotiate without it. “If we are to negotiate, what will be our data and what we be our point, where do we start from? We are waiting for the Federal Government to release the document so that we can take it up from there? As you can see, no state has done anything about the new minimum wage. “I am sure the document will be out soon. Then we will know if the government is sincere or not. He had assured that as soon as the Federal Government releases the document, he will implement it,” Adeleye said. Meanwhile, the ONDO State government yesterday alleged that it has uncovered a plot by some politicians to embark on a well-rehearsed campaign of calumny against the Governor Akeredolu-led administration. In a statement issued in Akure, Ojogo described the plot as ignoble and inhuman, saying its main target was the governor and members of his immediate family. The governor’s wife birthday was on Saturday while Sunday was the governor’s. No special event was organised to mark the low-key event which was attended by some members of his family and a few of his associates. Raphael Agboola assisted by other clerics including the Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Ven. Bejamin Babalola. The governor used the Thanksgiving service to sing various praise songs to appreciate God for the journey so far. He thanked all present for their love and prayers for him and his government, calling for more of it, so that the state would continue to witness more progress and development. Earlier in his sermon, Very Rev. Raphael Agboola admonished all Christians to always give thanks to God, their creator, no matter their situation, saying doing so would enable God do more good things in their lives. According to him, whatever anybody achieves in life, including position has been ordained by God, noting that people must learn to appreciate the almighty God for preserving their lives as many of their contemporaries have died and have no hope again. “It is by his grace that we are still alive till today. You are better than those in the mortuary. You are better than those in the grave. When there is life, there is hope. So, no matter the challenge, we must learn how to glorify God, “he stressed. At the event, the state Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, said Governor Akeredolu’s various developmental projects across the state showed that he is a very responsive and responsible leader.
