Stop exporting donkeys to East

Yesterday six trailers all loaded with donkeys and old horses entered a filling station to buy diesel.

I asked the drivers their destination and they said they were heading toward Ebonyi,Enugu and Anambra states.

The animals were going to work in the farms,they were for human consumption.

I was sad.

For a long time donkeys were taken to the east only to be eaten. This is bad trade. Donkeys are cheap compared to cows,some satanic merchants use to buy them and butcher them and sell the meat to unsuspecting public as cow meat in the East.

Weekly Trust visited Ebonyi last year and featured a detailed story with pictures in a donkey abattoir and we saw middle men buying the meat and taking them to towns and villages to sell. A woman confessed she was not telling her customers it was donkey meat.

If people are willingly buying donkey meat to eat I have no quarrel with that,it is their stomach afterall.

But the majority of consumers had no idea what they were being sold by those unscrupulous elements,this is a criminal act.

In Katsina a man was sentenced 3 years for selling donkey suya as cow. It is time the governments in the Eastern states pay attention to this. A lot of people are eating donkey meats in restaurants without knowing. Early this year a scandal broke out in Europe where sausages were sold to public with horse DNA.

In the North government should stop exportation of donkeys outside the region. The animal which is used in farms as means of rural transportation is gradually been wiped away.

A donkey is slow to procreate and if the trend continues there will be no donkeys in Northern Nigeria in another two decades.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OA Ihejirika named as aone of the culprits SaharaReporters has obtained a powerful but anonymous petition written by concerned Nigerian soldiers who claim that the Nigerian Army owes its men and women who have served in various United Nations peacekeeping operations over $43 million.

The document also carpets the United Nations, which it alleges may have collaborated with cheating Nigerian army chiefs to divert the allowances of the peacekeepers into their own pockets.

“It is on record and verifiable that over 3,950 troops who participated in Peace Support Operations in Liberia and Sudan between 2013 to 2014 are still been [owed] various months of allowances amounting to over $43.23m US Dollars which is equivalent to N6,919,168,000:00 Billion Nigerian Naira to date,” the petition said.

The petition warned that in view of the present security situation in the country, 3,950 soldiers being owed such a staggering amount could revolt “and this will not be good for our country.”

It also names the “principal actors” involved in the matter to be:

Former Chief of Army Staff (Retired), Lieutenant General OA Ihejirika;
Present Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General KTJ Minimah;
Director of Army Finance and Administration (DAFA), Major General AI Muraina;
Former Director of Army Training and Operations (AHQ DATOPS), Major General JO Nwaogbo; and
Present Director of Army Training and Operations (AHQ DATOPS), Major General JAH Ewansiha.

“It is obvious that lies and deceits have become a tradition among Nigeria Army generals,” the petition says. “They always devise ways to sweep matters that [touch] them under the carpets with cover ups.”

On the world body, the document says, “If the only hope of mankind today the United Nations can collaborate with Nigeria to divert the money meant for payment of Nigerian soldiers who participated in Peace Keeping Operations in Liberia and Sudan, it will be right for one to say that the entire universe is doomed and heading towards destruction.”

NIGERIA ARMY AUTHORITIES EMBEZZLE $43.23M US DOLLARS ALLOWANCES OF NIGERIAN SOLDIERS IN PEACE KEEPING OPERATIONS

If the only hope of mankind today the United Nations can collaborate with Nigeria to divert the money meant for payment of Nigerian soldiers who participated in Peace Keeping Operations in Liberia and Sudan, it will be right for one to say that the entire universe is doomed and heading towards destruction.

The United Nations is known for standard, transparency, justice, fair play and equality but, it is worrisome how this honorable body or few members in this body have targeted Nigeria and descended too low to collaborate with some born-cheat generals in the Nigerian Army to divert soldiers Operation Allowances into their private pockets.

It is on record and verifiable that over 3,950 troops who participated in Peace Support Operations in Liberia and Sudan between 2013 to 2014 are still been owned various months of allowances amounting to over $43.23m US Dollar which is equivalent to N6,919,168,000:00 Billion Nigerian Naira to date. The 800 soldiers from 223 Armour Battalion Zuru, Kebbi State, that served as Nigerian contingent NIBATT 40 at Nyala Super Camp in Sudan Darfur region between June to December 2013 are still being owned 2 months allowance while the 800 soldiers of 15 Field Engineering Regiment Ijebu Ode that served as NIBATT 33 at the Central Monrovia in Liberia between September 2013 to March 2014 are being owned their operation allowance for over 7 months of their return. The 800 soldiers from 322 Artillery Regiment in Benin City that served 10 months in Labado Sudan as NIBATT 41 returned to Nigeria in June 2014 only to meet 1 month operation allowance in their domiciliary account while the balance of 9 months disappear as their counterpart with no one to give account of it till date.

It was also gathered through an authentic sources that the domiciliary account of the 800 soldiers of 342 Artillery Regiment Obinze Imo State currently serving in Nyala Super Camp South Sudan as NIBATT 43 for 8 months now are red as no dime have been deposited into their account. This also applies to the 750 soldiers of 311 Artillery Regiment Kontangora, Niger State currently serving as NIBATT 34 in Liberia.

When on 11 February 2014, the Nigerian National dailies Punch newspaper published this issue, with a view to finding a solution to this ugly trend, the dubious Nigeria Army through its Public Relations Officer. Brig Gen Olajide Olaleye came up with their lies and deceitful propaganda that “it was not true that the Nigerian Army was owning soldiers arrears of operations allowances”, and to cover up their secret deals within 48 hours they paid in 4 months operation allowance into NIBATT 40 troops domiciliary account remaining 2 months which are yet to be paid till date after 8 months of their return from the operation area.

The questions that remain unanswered are:

1. Why is United Nations owing only Nigerian Peace Keepers after sacrificing their lives to bring peace to the troubled regions?



2. If the United Nations have paid the Nigerian military authorities or the Federal Government, where are the monies, who is with it?



3. Are the authorities concerned waiting for similar Akure incident to occur before they address the issue?

4. Is the Army Chief Lt Gen KTJ Minimah not aware that such monies are been owned to his troops by UN or is released by UN and hijacked by his generals leaving these soldiers who have painstakingly and diligently served this nation in foreign land to suffer endless hopes for their overdue allowances?

5. Why should the Army Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade in his response to the Punch publication of 11 February, 2014 deceive the soldiers and lie to the nation that “the money is not missing and that the authority is working round the clock to secure the funds from the appropriate quarters and relevant agencies sponsors of the mission”.

6. For over 8 months Army authorities have been working round the clock to secure money that we well know that United Nations MOU with troops contributing countries states that UN pays at the inception of each tenure.

7. If this is not one of the Nigerian Army general’s lies and deceits, let the Director of Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade tell us and Nigerians who are the appropriate quarters and relevant agencies sponsors of the mission that are hijacking these soldiers allowances as he claims?. Is it UN, the Presidency or COAS?.

8. If the UN is owing Nigeria for over 8 months now as claimed by our generals, where are they getting the $100 and $200 US Dollars respectively that they pay to each troops in Sudan and Liberia in operation area monthly as maintenance allowances?

Considering the present security situation in the country, this is a bad omen. 3,950 soldiers being owned such a staggering amount could revolt and this will not be good for our country. Let us use Akure incident as a lesson and do something before this issue gets out of hand.

My first foray into agriculture, in the 1980s, ended in failure. I bought a large expanse of land on the Yola-Numan highway, and started farming maize. It didn’t work out as well as I thought; the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) of the mid to late 1980s didn’t help. Today the land is still there, used by many smallholder farmers for their own cultivation. My wife also runs a farm on some of the land, breeding chickens, quail birds and ostriches.

Someday soon we hope to go back to large-scale cultivation of crops, because my belief in agriculture is iron clad. That belief was so strong that to acquire land for my first major agricultural investment, I sold my house to fund the venture.

In the mean time we are trying our hands at something new. There are currently no automated animal feed mills in Northern Nigeria; all of the production that happens is manual and small-scale. Considering that most of Nigeria’s cattle production takes place in Northern Nigeria, you can see that there is plenty of opportunity for a feed mill business.

For that reason we are now building, in partnership with a Portuguese company, a modern and automated animal feed mill (poultry and cattle) just outside Yola. When it is completed we hope to serve the entire Northern Nigeria with high quality animal feed. Because it will be fully automated it will create only a few direct jobs, but the number of indirect and support jobs – in sales and distribution – and the economic opportunity will be significant

Whenever I talk about my involvement in business, one question I always get asked is this: what did you do when you were in government? It is a question I am always happy to answer.

I do not believe that is the business of the government to set up industries. Businesses should be created and run by the private sector, by individuals and institutions who have seen a need and would like to fill it.

What the government exists to do is create a conducive and enabling environment for businesses to operate and thrive. So if, as Vice President, I had somehow ordered the establishment of a government feed mill in Northern Nigeria, we might have been able to organise a big commissioning ceremony, but there would be nothing to guarantee that the mill would still be in operation today. We have seen how government has run businesses in Nigeria in the past.



What we did when we were in government was what we should have done: focus on the fundamental structural reforms required to create a favourable business environment in Nigeria. Which is why the government faced the foreign debt issue head on, as well as policy reforms in oil and gas, power, banking, telecoms and pensions. It is also why we focused on the success of the privatisation programme.

Today, all around the country you can see success stories. Every time I inspect the feed mill under construction I am reminded that not very far from Yola is the Savannah Sugar Company, which was acquired by Alhaji Aliko Dangote in 2003 as part of the privatization programme. Until its acquisition by Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) it was a struggling business. In the decade since it was acquired DIL has pumped billions of Naira into it, and it is today cultivating 18,000 hectares of land, with a vision to expand to 100,000 over the next few years, and providing employment for thousands of people.

I’m happy to play my own part. My plunge into business happened upon my retirement from public service. Today our businesses employ thousands of people across Nigeria, and provide economic opportunity for even more. When I joined the government in 1999, I surrendered them all to a trust. Now that I am again a private citizen I will continue to do business, to invest in opportunities where I see them. The fact that I might get criticised, because I once held political office, or that failure is always a possibility, will never stop me from actively pursuing business opportunities where I see them.

5. It was on that basis, that recently an air raid was carried out on some of these bases, which in turn angered the boko haram boys to lunch this daring attack on Dambua.
6. Dambua host a very big brigade with some newly acquired military hardware and all was lost during the attack. Forget what the military released about 52 boko casualties, ask them no one can show you a single corpse of boko casualties.
7. Since most of these kidnap women are from neighbouring villages near dambua, they where kidnap and kept within there area, it is logical to believe that they escaped successfully and returned home.

I just read somewhere on my Facebook about a massive Boko haram attack in Danboa, according to my friend on Facebook, the DPO DAMBOA, CO JTF in Danboa, and many military and civilian loss there life in the attack.

Multiple sources said the Boko haram boys came with 30 hilux and 6 APC.

Its unfortunate that in Nigeria, many claim to be educated but are actually illiterates. Many like you will say Buhari is behind boko haram IBB, the Northern elders are all behind boko haram etc but without actually any proof,whereas those found making incriminating comments are given a breathin space. How do we help solve the problem when everybody points accusing finger to the wrong people?

Before it was IBB, then Chiroma, then Atiku, then Buhari, Ango Ibrahim. No it was Nndume, then Babangida ALIYU, it later turn to Kwankwaso, Lamido Sanusi, then shifted to Nyako and then Shettima, now na American. Today if I am a credible opposition to GEJ I instantly become I boko haram sponsor.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – When Washington imposed sanctions in June 2012 on Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, he dismissed it as an empty gesture.

Two years later, Shekau’s skepticism appears well founded: his Islamic militant group is now the biggest security threat to Africa’s top oil producer, is richer than ever, more violent and its abductions of women and children continue with impunity.

As the United States, Nigeria and others struggle to track and choke off its funding, Reuters interviews with more than a dozen current and former U.S. officials who closely follow Boko Haram provide the most complete picture to date of how the group finances its activities.

Central to the militant group’s approach includes using hard-to-track human couriers to move cash, relying on local funding sources and engaging in only limited financial relationships with other extremists groups. It also has reaped millions from high-profile kidnappings.

“Our suspicions are that they are surviving on very lucrative criminal activities that involve kidnappings,” U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in an interview.

Until now, U.S. officials have declined to discuss Boko Haram’s financing in such detail.

The United States has stepped up cooperation with Nigeria to gather intelligence on Boko Haram, whose militants are killing civilians almost daily in its northeastern Nigerian stronghold. But the lack of international financial ties to the group limit the measures the United States can use to undermine it, such as financial sanctions.

The U.S. Treasury normally relies on a range of measures to track financial transactions of terrorist groups, but Boko Haram appears to operate largely outside the banking system.

To fund its murderous network, Boko Haram uses primarily a system of couriers to move cash around inside Nigeria and across the porous borders from neighboring African states, according to the officials interviewed by Reuters.

In designating Boko Haram as a terrorist organization last year, the Obama administration characterized the group as a violent extremist organization with links to al Qaeda.

The Treasury Department said in a statement to Reuters that the United States has seen evidence that Boko Haram has received financial support from Al Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb (AQIM), an offshoot of the jihadist group founded by Osama bin Laden.

But that support is limited. Officials with deep knowledge of Boko Haram’s finances say that any links with al Qaeda or its affiliates are inconsequential to Boko Haram’s overall funding.

“Any financial support AQIM might still be providing Boko Haram would pale in comparison to the resources it gets from criminal activities,” said one U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Assessments differ, but one U.S. estimate of financial transfers from AQIM was in the low hundreds of thousands of dollars. That compares with the millions of dollars that Boko Haram is estimated to make through its kidnap and ransom operations.

LUCRATIVE KIDNAPPING RACKET

Ransoms appear to be the main source of funding for Boko Haram’s five-year-old Islamist insurgency in Nigeria, whose 170 million people are split roughly evenly between Christians and Muslims, said the U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

In February last year, armed men on motorcycles snatched Frenchman Tanguy Moulin-Fournier, his wife and four children, and his brother while they were on holiday near the Waza national park in Cameroon, close to the Nigerian border.

Boko Haram was paid an equivalent of about $3.15 million by French and Cameroonian negotiators before the hostages were released, according to a confidential Nigerian government report later obtained by Reuters.

Figures vary on how much Boko Haram earns from kidnappings. Some U.S. officials estimate the group is paid as much as $1 million for the release of each abducted wealthy Nigerian.

It is widely assumed in Nigeria that Boko Haram receives support from religious sympathizers inside the country, including some wealthy professionals and northern Nigerians who dislike the government, although little evidence has been made public to support that assertion.

Current and former U.S. and Nigerian officials say Boko Haram’s operations do not require significant amounts of money, which means even successful operations tracking and intercepting their funds are unlikely to disrupt their campaign.

Boko Haram had developed “a very diversified and resilient model of supporting itself,” said Peter Pham, a Nigeria scholar at the Atlantic Council think-tank in Washington.

“It can essentially ‘live off the land’ with very modest additional resources required,” he told a congressional hearing on June 11.

LOW-COST WEAPONS

“We’re not talking about a group that is buying sophisticated weapons of the sort that some of the jihadist groups in Syria and other places are using. We’re talking AK-47s, a few rocket-propelled grenades, and bomb-making materials. It is a very low-cost operation,” Pham told Reuters.

That includes paying local youth just pennies a day to track and report on Nigerian troop movements.

Much of Boko Haram’s military hardware is not bought, it is stolen from the Nigerian army.

In February, dozens of its fighters descended on a remote military outpost in the Gwoza hills in northeastern Borno state, looting 200 mortar bombs, 50 rocket-propelled grenades and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. [ID:nL3N0OD3BU]

Such raids have left the group well armed. In dozens of attacks in the past year Nigerian soldiers were swept aside by militants driving trucks, motor bikes and sometimes even stolen armored vehicles, firing rocket-propelled grenades.

Boko Haram’s inner leadership is security savvy, not only in the way it moves money but also in its communications, relying on face-to-face contact, since messages or calls can be intercepted, the current and former U.S. officials said.

“They’re quite sophisticated in terms of shielding all of these activities from legitimate law enforcement officials in Africa and certainly our own intelligence efforts trying to get glimpses and insight into what they do,” a former U.S. military official said.

U.S. officials acknowledge that the weapons that have served Washington so well in its financial warfare against other terrorist groups are proving less effective against Boko Haram.

“My sense is that we have applied the tools that we do have but that they are not particularly well tailored to the way that Boko Haram is financing itself,” a U.S. defense official said.

Reports from Kano just now have it that Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso's father; Alhaji Musa Kwankwaso who holds the traditional title of Maji Dadin Kano and District Head of Madubi was attacked by unknown gunmen in the outskirts of Kano city. Although the details are still sketchy with sources saying the attack occurred at a mosque while another version has it that the elderly Kwankwaso was attacked at his residence. Another version has it that the gunmen killed several persons after shooting sporadically on their way to Mr. Kwankwaso’s residence while the old man narrowly escaped being killed.

No mind th OP Why must some people always distractingly and foolishly bring Islam, Aboki, Hausa & North in every single time, in relation to every issue discussed in this forum? This attitude is a daming indictment of how some of them lack fundamentally sound reasoning. I personally think most of them are simply not exposed or even minimally sophisticated.

This issue of cattle rustling is taking a new dimension. Imagine a Berom man having 100 cattle? In as much as i condemn the killings, i must say at this junction that the Berom should stop stealing fulani cattle, because a fulani without his cattle is a dead man, a man without respect. The fulani on their part should stop equaling a cattle life with that of a human.

Right now another Plateau tribe that is buying this cattle rustling trade are the Taroq people of Langtang. They have stolen virtually all the cattle belonging to Fulani in Wase and are now shifting their attention to Shendam people. This is evident in recent attack on Kuka and Yamini villages by Taroq militia.


Fulani herdsmen warn Plateau cattle rustlers. The Plateau State Chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has warned Tarokh youths against persistent rustling of cattle belonging to its members in the State. The association made this known yesterday following the rustling of 500 cattle last Monday in Lonvel village of Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The STF, three weeks ago, claimed that the task-force killed 100 suspected assailants who attacked and killed more than 30 persons and displaced over 700 families in Langtang South Local Government Area. The Chairman Miyitt-Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association, Plateau Branch, Boro Useni, and a pastor who narrowly escaped being killed in the Wase violence, Sadauna Adogo, identified the root causes of the Southern Plateau crisis to be criminality among the youth. Mr. Adogo accused Tarok youth of being the perpetrators of violence in Wase Local Government Area and the brains behind the cow thefts in the area.

Thus the Prophet is told that his primary task is only to convey the message, that he is only a reminder, that he cannot guide whom he loves, that he cannot force people to accept the faith and that he must invite people to the way of God with wisdom and good admonition. Muslims are told not to argue with people of the book except in the best of ways,
