No fewer than 22 persons narrowly escaped death in an auto crash in front of the Mountain Top University, Kara Ibafo area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Commission in the state, Florence Okpe, who confirmed the crash to our correspondent on Sunday, said the accident involved 17 males and five females.

Okpe added that the accidents occurred between two vehicles: a Toyota Highlander with registration number KSF 461DM, and an 18-seater bus marked AAA 859 XM.

She said the cause of the accident was a loss of control on the part of the Toyota Highlander’s driver, causing it to crash into the fully loaded bus.

The FRSC spokesperson added that nine individuals who sustained varying degrees of injury have been taken to AZ Zonecare Hospital in the Magboro area of the state.

However, Okpe appealed to motorists to always maintain a controllable speed to guard against negative occurrences.

“Apart from conducting routine checks every morning and whenever your car is about to move, always maintain a controllable speed in case of any eventuality.

“The nine injured persons in the accident comprising 17 males and five females, have all been taken to AZ Zonecare Hospital in the Magboro area of the state.”

The Management Of The National Youth Service Corps has warned corps members serving across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory not to embark on any journey without the authorisation of the corps.

The warning comes in the wake of a reported crash that claimed the life of one Ige Adedayo, a corps member serving in Delta State, who died in a lone crash on Saturday at Ago Adura, Itori, on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Confirming that Adedayo was a serving corps member in Delta State, NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, disclosed in a telephone conversation with PUNCH Metro on Sunday that he (Adedayo) was posted to Warri for his primary assignment. However, rather than report to his Place of Primary Assignment, Adedayo travelled to Ogun State without permission from the NYSC authorities in Delta.

Megwa added that the Director-General of NYSC has warned serving corps members against embarking on journeys outside the state of their service without NYSC permission.

He said, “He was posted to Warri for his PPA, but instead of reporting to his place of primary assignment, he travelled to Ogun State where he had an auto crash which claimed his life.

“NYSC is a one-year national service to give back to the country, and it’s just one year for you to stay in the state you are posted to and do your primary assignment. We always advise corps members not to embark on unnecessary journeys.

“The Director-General of NYSC is always emphasising this at all times, that serving corps members should not embark on journeys without the approval of the NYSC management. NYSC coordinators are there to assist you in whatever issue you’re having.

Megwa, while condoling with Adedayo’s family, described his death as saddening and a national loss.

“The death of this promising young boy is a loss to his family, a loss to NYSC, and a loss to the nation. It is a sad occurrence. The NYSC family in Ogun State has reached out to his family, and we condole with them at this trying time. We pray that the Almighty God will console them as we all grieve about his loss,” Megwa said.

Adedayo was said to have been among the corps members who had just left the orientation camp and probably came home for the Easter break before meeting his untimely death.

He was said to be an indigene of the Ogun State and graduated from D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, which was just a stone’s throw from where he had the accident.

The crash, which reportedly occurred around 6.55am on Saturday, involved a Mercedes-Benz with number plate JJJ168JF.

The spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the crash in a statement sent to journalists.

Akinbiyi said that according to eyewitness accounts, “The car driver dozed off while driving, which led to loss of control, tumbling, and crashing from inward to outward lane.”

The Operatives Of The Imo State Police Command have arrested the 38-year-old owner of Our Guest Hotel, Ibe Obasi, located in the Obowo Local Government Area of the state for allegedly torturing to death a youth in the area, Ebuka Udemba.

A Statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, on Sunday, stated that the incident happened on Saturday.

Okoye disclosed that the suspect had been arrested and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.

He said, “Operatives of Obowo Divisional Headquarters have arrested the owner of Our Guest House, Umulogho, Obowo, Mr Ibe Obasi, aged 38, who was allegedly involved in the murder of a 25-year-old Ebuka Udemba, an indigene of Umuokpa in the Obowo LGA of Imo State.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was tortured and locked up inside the generator room of the said guest house by the suspect and two others at large, where he suffocated to death, on the accusation of stealing a customer’s handset.

“Accordingly, the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Owerri, for consolidation of the ongoing investigation. He has provided useful information that will assist the determined operatives in arresting all the suspects in connection with the case.

“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has tasked the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID to carry out a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the remote circumstances surrounding the death of the victim and ensure that all the suspects involved are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“While commiserating with the families, friends, and relatives of the victim, the commissioner of police strongly condemns the cruel act and calls on the people of Obowo LGA, particularly the residents of Umulogho, to refrain from taking the law into their hands as the Command is on top of the situation and has commenced a thorough investigation to apprehend the suspects linked to the case of murder and bring them to book.”
