Yeah, I basically accept all the standard classifications that people that come from the continent of Africa were called in the States because they became the reality.

Black, African, Colored, Negro, African American, Afro-American, and many more!! LOL!

My Grandmother is 94 this year and to this day when she ask me about a Black girl she will say this: "Who that colored girl ova dere?"

All these name changes to me are for other people because they couldn't deal with Negro (which means just Black in Spanish), or African, or Colored, I could care less because I am all of them.
so true.

I agree with both of you but all social constructs (Nations, Nation-States, Races, Tribes, etc) are made by humans. Who determines what is right or wrong is based on whomever controls society and writes the history? Once something is, then it is already part of our existence. We can all say, and rightfully so, that there are no such thing a races of humans but it is a reality and a way to classify humans. Just like there is a country called the United States and it is man made. It didn't exist 300 years ago and people didn't classify them as such but it is a reality today.

I feel that type of argument is only good for intellectual fodder.
i agree with you. as of today i am black and i am nigerian. but that never existed hundreds of years ago. nigeria wasn't named by nigerians especially seeing the fact that we weren't speaking the same language. but like you said once something is then it is apart of our existence.

FoodRe: This Nigerian Food by naijadiva2(f): 4:25am On Jun 14, 2008
i eat like that every night. nigerian foods to me are pretty heavy so if you don't take time, you might end up eating for 2.
Music/RadioRe: Modern Rap Is Judged Harshly Compared To Other Genres? by naijadiva2(f): 4:10am On Jun 14, 2008
how many times is this thread going to move.

Did Asa have to scream 'Naija' before we know what culture she represents?
if only i knew who she was.
FashionRe: There Is Nothing Wrong With Cornrows On Guys Init? by naijadiva2(f): 4:05am On Jun 14, 2008
for me personally, i don't like seeing guys with hair period because once they decide to cut their hair, you start to see how they really look like and most of the time they look ugly.

CelebritiesRe: Rihanna's New Look by naijadiva2(f): 3:55am On Jun 14, 2008
this new hair she has is good. this one fits her perfectly. when i think about, the other hairstyle she had made her head look big especially since she has a forehead and a long face.

My boyfriend told that theres no such thing as Black,White, Yellow or Brown so he wont know what people is talking about when it comes to a race.
and i think he is right. race was invented by white people so that they can seperate and thus discriminate. before them, there was nothing like black, or nigeria. there was igbo, yoruba, hause, and more, not nigeria, ghana, liberia, etc.
merge:
another example

The presentation of our culture is usually cheap and look like not that much time has been put into it.

When there is a cultural event?

Compare the Puerto Day Parade to the Nigerian Day Parade.

I have nothing against Blacks but this is my opinion.
okay so you want us to up the status of our parade, okay go and call the man in charge of the arrangements. i'm sure he'll work something out.

first of all, not all cultures are the same. just because our may not be as flashy as other cultures doesn't mean nothing. puerto ricans are just proud for nothing except for the creation of reggaeton. nigerians show pride by actions while puerto ricans show pride by waving a flag.

Foreign AffairsRe: Obama Has Made The Entire Black Race Happy by naijadiva2(f): 11:27pm On Jun 12, 2008
i was already happy before obama. just because he made it far it doesn't mean that black people all of a sudden are riding down easy lane.

You MUST be crazy!

Africans DRIVE CABS!

The opening posters argument is flawed but MOST Africans get caught up in the American Lifestyle and DROP OUT OF COLLEGE and nowdays THEY CAN'T AFFORD IT.

Most languish in Nursing, pharmacy schools, hoping - praying they will make it through to get that "corporate job visa thingy"

In reality you will see more AFRICANS driving CABS than in school. This INCLUDES Nigerians.

but hey, they making a living - even though most people are bypassing CAB RIDES because of the HIKE in their fuel fares.
atleast they have a job unlike those who are born in america and don't do jack with their life.

I am far from ignorant but hey that is my opinion smiley

Well if you want to call me ignorant than go right ahead !!!
u keep claiming there's more but yet i haven't seen them. what's an argument/discussion without examples?

CultureRe: Why Don't Blacks Take Their Culture Serious? by naijadiva2(f): 11:15pm On Jun 12, 2008
so based on religion, you've came to the conclusion that we are not serious about our culture?

For example

Why are most or a lot of Igbo Roman Catholic?

I know many are also Christian.

Why don't we have an Igbo religion?
that's not an important factor, i need something more than that?

@merge

are you nigerian?
CultureRe: Why Don't Blacks Take Their Culture Serious? by naijadiva2(f): 11:05pm On Jun 12, 2008

Well that is what I see.

I don't care if you say I am wrong.

I am not talking about having more culture.

I mean taking the culture serious.
give us an example and maybe we can explain, just saying you are right doesn't mean a thing.
CultureRe: Why Don't Blacks Take Their Culture Serious? by naijadiva2(f): 11:04pm On Jun 12, 2008
MyTempID:
Contrary to the question you have asked, merge, why don't you give me examples of why you're right? You wanted to make a point but you still haven't. All you stated is that you "see" and you "observe", whereas there's a possiblity that you could be suffering from eye delusions.
yea i want to know too.

@merge

if you attend african gathering's (wedding, baby showers, parties) you will see what "real" culture is all about.

songs old but i still like it.
CultureRe: Why Don't Blacks Take Their Culture Serious? by naijadiva2(f): 10:55pm On Jun 12, 2008
well i will have to say that you are wrong. black americans have more culture than whites in the US and African people take their culture seriously. just because u don't see us wearing kente clothes around the kumbaya fire doesn't mean we are not taking our culture serious.
