Politics / Dino Melaye Runs From Saharareporters Questions On His Assets At Lagos Social Me by Naijaepic: 7:57am On Feb 28, 2016 |
Senator Dino Melaye from Kogi State attempted to evade and scamper away from SaharaReporters’ questions on his finances and luxury car collection during Social Media Week in Lagos on Friday February 26th. Mr. Melaye briefly attended Social Media Week Friday morning to support embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki during his address to conference attendees. Dino Melaye Runs From SaharaReporters' Questions About His Luxury Homes, Foreign Accounts A member of a civil society organization attending the conference argued that Mr. Melaye has been counseling Mr. Saraki on how to best leverage youth and civil society groups to support him in defeating his corruption proceedings at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). Mr. Melaye has been the subject of a number of SaharaReporters exposes due to his opulent lifestyle, palatial homes donned with lavish furnishings, his luxury car collection, and his operation of an unlawful foreign bank account in violation of Nigerian law for public officials. During an exclusive interview with SaharaTV last year, Mr. Melaye became irate when our correspondent asked why he posted photos on social media of his luxury cars and homes. Mr. Melaye denied posting those photos but could not explain to SaharaTV viewers how then ended up on his personal Twitter page. In July, SaharaReporters published exclusive photographs of a mansion Mr. Melaye was renovating in Abuja, which he purchased for an estimated 1.3 billion naira (6.5 million dollars). When asked how he could afford such a property, since he had a modest career as an alleged activist and public servant, Mr. Melaye’s refused to answer saying only that he should not be questioned because he is “a distinguished member of the Federal government.” It will be recalled that Mr. Melaye was one of the most vocal opponents to Stella Oduah, the former Minister of Aviation, when she was embroiled in the BMW car contract scandal in 2014. Mr. Melaye repeatedly called for her resignation because of the scandal she was associated with at the time. SaharaReporters also obtained photographs of Mr. Melaye’s new 2015 Rolls Royce Wraith car, complete with DINO on the license plate, last November estimated to cost at least N89,563,500 ($450,000). In December of last year, SaharaReporters exclusively obtained information on Mr. Melaye’s bank accounts domiciled in the United States, which is in violation of the code of conduct for public officials. Following a SaharaReporters investigation into these bank accounts, it was discovered that he made a $1,000 transaction in New York City to Schweiger Dermatology to remove a tattoo of his ex-wife’s name. Yesterday, on February 26th, our SaharaReporters correspondent approached Mr. Melaye when he was interacting with the conference attendees and journalists to ask about these exposes. Our correspondent first asked Mr. Melaye, “I was wondering if you could tell up how much money is left in your US bank accounts?” referring to the unlawful Bank of America account he had been using, most recently for the tattoo removal. “Is there any money left behind?” our correspondent followed up. SaharaReporters had received reports that Mr. Melaye began withdrawing large sums of money immediately following our reporting on his illegal account. Mr. Melaye attempted to avoid answering the question saying that “Please, please, please I didn’t come here for [this].” He then began moving away from the correspondent, heading toward the exit. Our correspondent pursued the embattled Senator, and then asked how he could afford the Rolls Royce car and his other luxury vehicles. He tried deflecting saying, “I stole it from you.” He then repeated several times, “I am not ready to speak to you, I am not ready to speak to you.” Our correspondent reminded him that “you are a public official yet you have all these assets. Can you explain that?” Mr. Melaye then moved faster toward the exit trying to deflect his attention with conference attendees. Our correspondent then moved toward to exit door and changed the topic to asking “what’s the difference between accompanying the Saraki’s [to their police or legal proceedings] and challenging Stella Oduah’s legitimacy” to hold office? Mr. Melaye then said that “you should be civil, I am not ready to speak with you.” Our correspondent followed up by asking how much longer he could go not not answering these questions? Mr. Melaye then went deeper into the crowd to avoid our correspondent, who pursued him and continued asking about his unexplained assets and conduct. SaharaReporters previously conducted a poll in December asking readers whether respondends thought there should be a probe by the Code of Conduct Bureau into Mr. Melaye for his unexplained assets, 94% of the 1,488 respondents on Twitter voted that he should be probed. http://saharareporters.com/2016/02/27/dino-melaye-runs-saharareporters-questions-his-assets-lagos-social-media-week 2 Likes 1 Share |

Yeah,it is good to know Myth: The old myth about not storing batteries on concrete floors is just that - a myth. This story has been around for 100 years, and originated back when battery cases were made up of wood and asphalt. The acid would leak from them, and form a slow-discharging circuit through the now acid-soaked and conductive floor. http://www.solar-electric.com/deep-cycle-battery-faq.html |
Computers / Hospital Data Held For $3.6 Million Ransomware Payoff by Naijaepic: 10:07pm On Feb 20, 2016 |
Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center (HPMC) has fallen victim to a cyberattack. Hackers took control of the hospital's computer systems and are demanding $3.6 million via 9,000 bitcoins, a virtual currency, to release the data Relevant Products/Services. Update: In a statement issued on February 17, president and CEO Allen Stefanek said the hospital paid approximately $17,000 via 40 bitcoins to the hacker to get its files back, saying it was in the best interest of HPMC to do so. He also said the reports that the hacker wanted $3.6 million via 9,000 bitcoins were incorrect. Stefanek added that the ransomware attack Relevant Products/Services on the 434-bed facility occurred on February 5, when staff began having trouble accessing the hospital’s computer network. He said things are working properly again. “All clinical operations are utilizing the EMR system,” Stefanek said in the statement. "All systems currently in use were cleared of the malware and thoroughly tested. We continue to work with our team of experts to understand more about this event.” Last week, Stefanek told the local NBC Channel 4 news station that the ransomware attack is impacting day-to-day operations at the Los Angeles, California-based hospital. Emergency room operations are taking a hit from the attack, he said, and the hospital has had to transport patients to other medical centers because they cannot access patient records. As its name suggests, ransomware is malicious software that holds computing assets ransom. The software blocks users from accessing computer systems until money is paid. Ransomware is usually launched in small scale operations against individuals. Is Patient Data Safe? Stefanek told NBC the hospital started observing “significant" IT issues and declared an internal emergency on Friday, February 12. Hollywood Presbyterian then notified the Los Angeles Police Department and the FBI to investigate and has hired computer forensics experts, NBC reports. "At this time, we have no evidence that any patient or employee information was the subject of unauthorized access or extraction by the attacker,” Stefanek told NBC4. Of course, there’s no guarantee that employee information wasn’t stolen either. Stefanek did not offer more details about any possible threats the hackers may have made. We caught up with Graham Clulely, a security Relevant Products/Services researcher in the United Kingdom, to get his thoughts on the attack. He told us ransomware doesn't discriminate between home users and businesses. "All it cares about is infecting as many computers as possible and extorting money from its victims," Cluley said. "Of course, if it does manage to hit an organization that has many computers and if that organization did not have systematic backups of its important data, then there is the chance that the rewards for the attackers can be even greater." Ransomware Rising According McAfee’s 2016 Threat Predictions report, ransomware will be a "major and rapidly growing" threat in 2016. The security solutions firm pointed to new malware variants emerging and the success of the "ransomware-as-a-service" business model as drivers for the increase. McAfee predicts the rise in ransomware attacks that started in the third quarter of 2014 and continued throughout 2015 will not slow down this year. "In 2015 we saw ransomware-as-a-service hosted on the Tor network and using virtual currencies for payments," McAfee said in its report. "We expect to see more of this in 2016, as inexperienced cybercriminals will gain access to this service while staying relatively anonymous." There are only a few ransomeware families dominating the scene currently, such as CryptoWall 3, CTB-Locker, and CryptoLocker. Nevertheless, McAfee predicts new variants will surface with new stealth functionalities. "For example, new variants may start to silently encrypt data," the report said. "These encrypted files will be backed up and eventually the attacker will pull the key, resulting in encrypted files both on the system and in the backup. Other new variants might use kernel components to hook the file system and encrypt files on the fly, as the user accesses them." Protecting Your Assets The moral of the story: Look for security solutions that can help protect against ransomware that could shut down your operations or cost you millions of dollars to unlock your data. "The way to prevent ransomware disrupting your business is to backup your essential data, and hold it securely. Don't wait until you get hit by ransomware before you decide it's time to build a backup regime," Cluley said. "In addition, it's obviously wise to have a layered defense, including up-to-date anti-virus defenses and patching against vulnerabilities." http://www.toptechnews.com/article/index.php?story_id=1000034MJM4G |

You might need a stabilizer to sit between your charger and the power source in your apartment. This equally apply to some generator, if the voltage output from genset cannot be guarantee. Politics / How Linda Ikeji Open Up The Pandora's Box by Naijaepic: 4:25pm On Oct 26, 2015 |
Now everyone of you that make legal living out of online, be ready to start paying your VAT/Tax as at when due. Indeed, it will never be a business as usual again, for every profit you make online, be rafy to pay your VAT/Tax. However, pending the time government is able to put policy in place, Oga Seun Osewa can enjoy the proceeds from Nairaland.com See the reason below The popular blogger, Ms. Linda Ikeji recently acquired a property well above $3 million in the expensive Banana Island, in Lagos State. Congratulations to Linda Ikeji for her new house. That is truly bold for a blogger to live in a mansion of $3M. It means she has many multiples of that. Her hard work, tenacity and focus has paid very well. Unfortunately, her open display of wealth will change tax policy in Nigeria. Someone had noted that it is likely that Federal Internal Revenue Service, the tax office, will send her a bill for VAT. Few internet companies pay tax in Nigeria because they have no office but laptops which the tax office cannot easily trace and pursue. Besides VAT, there is also corporate tax. We are not saying that Linda Ikeji Blog is not paying VAT or tax, but our understanding is that by her success, government will begin to find ways to improve its revenue collection capabilities in digital business. Most web companies make more than meatspace-business who are forced to pay taxes because they have physical domains and physical products which can be easily traced and taxed. Few companies in Nigeria will make a profit of $3M over 6 years, the total number of years Linda has operated her blog. If she was able to save $3M, it means she must have made more. The big question – how much tax did she pay? Government will likely try to find out. As they do that, other Internet companies will be scrutinized. We think at the end, banks will be asked to assist government. As advertisers pay money into her bank accounts, was Linda Ikeji Blog paying VAT ? But irrespective of her experience, government is already waking up that internet has a lot of wealth and it needs to take taxes. No matter what you think, making a profit of $3M for running a business for 6 years is simply unprecedented in Nigeria when government contracting is not involved. That is the future and why entrepreneurship is a web generator than anything in human history. Government needs to understand that paradigm and begin the process of changing tax policy. http://tekedia.com/54625/why-linda-ikejis-3m-property-will-change-online-tax-policy-in-nigeria/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Tekedia+%28Tekedia%29 |
