Bofemsky:The nature of their work is trying to work in a highly charged environment surrounded by people who are worried about their health or that of their relatives to the point of being irrational and abusive. They are human too and deserve better treatment like any other worker out there. Have you ever smiled at someone and they snarled back at and shouted at you? even if you smile at a stranger in the streets they will smile back at you. It's difficult to understand, yes indeed you may be sick but you are not the only one who is sick nor are you necessarily the sickest person in the hospital. Nurses are nurses not attendants or maids. It is not really their job to fetch your mobile phone from your bag, to feed you and wash you etc. DO you need a nursing degree for any of these tasks? Thats the work of a healthcare assistant or auxiliary nurse. Nurses may do this because they are humane and yes the drug chart says drugs at 0800 like the rest of the 24 patients in the ward, so how do you expect her to give everyone their drugs at the same 0800? Or speak to 3 sets of relatives of the same patient who come in one after the other every hour and ask about their mother with malaria instead of speaking amongst themselves and sharing information. A bit of common sense, being polite and reevaluation of our own selfish expectations will make the working environment more pleasant and the nurses less stressed. Nurses are human too and if they are insulted or treated like dirt they will do the same to you, nurse does not mean accept bad manners and behaviour from patients and relatives. They are not paid for that, they are not even paid enough ..and no i am not a nurse |
Phlegmwash:I second you! Worse thing is we are all going round being rude and calling other people rude. Someone was recounting how she gave a 'small girl' a slap for being rude. Just shows you our mentality, so if it was an elderly woman would you give her a slap? The correct terminology is 'adult' not small girl, is she is too small to cater to your needs why did you approach her in the first place? If she was treated like an 'adult' she would probably have had a nicer attitude in the first place. Everywhere you see Nigerians it is the same "who is this small girl talking to?' 'Hey you come here and serve me now' 'do you know who i am?' 'I am older enough to be your father' The list of comments is endless, meanwhile they are in church every sunday throwing away their tithes away wondering why God is ignoring them |
Konnektions146:I am not guilty of being rude to nurses or patients my friend. So show some maturity and don't get personal here and accuse me of such unless you have the evidence. My point is don't be rude to anyone whether they are a nurse, driver or gateman. It is pride and arrogance that makes one take offence easily, give everyone a chance and treat them like you would want to be treated It's not hard.. |
lepasharon:No I am not a nurse, I don't have to be a nurse to realise that yes some nurses are rude but not all nurses are rude. Nurses are also human and do not deserve the abusive treatment they tend to get from members of the public. The banker that comes in and insults a nurse is also the person who mistreats you when you go to the bank. Nigerian society is lacking in manners in general and I say again, there is rudeness and shoddy treatment everywhere from the airport to the bank. Indiscipline is everywhere that is why driving is such a nightmare in Nigeria Everyone is guilty |
In defence of nurses, yes I am in defence of Nurses since i can see this is a nurse bashing thread.. the rudeness you may encounter is as a result of poor upbringing in nigerian society in general. Members of the public think Nurse = househelp and therefore the nurses are at their beck and call for every single wish and command no matter how trivial or silly. A lot of nigerian patients are rude and demanding, shouting for assistance and expecting the nurse to come immediately as if they are the onlu ones in the universe. In a ward with 24 sick people with different degrees of illness, screaming for the nurse to get your mobile phone out of your handbag when she is trying to help someone who is bleeding to death or in pain is not going to win you any favours. So what is the nurse is watching TV is she a machine? does she deserve a rest period? There should be a nurse and an auxiliary nurse ratio of 1:1:6 ie one nurse and assistant to every 6 patients not 24 or 36 patients. How many times has anyone ever seen a ward with a full complement of nurses? It never happens, they are off with sickness, depression and recovering from physical assault from angry patients who think the nurse made them ill. She/he is very aware you are ill, in pain etc but she has to prioritise so don't make her job any harder by being rude, physically abusive or treating her like dirt, most people react to a smile or kind gesture with a reciprocal attitude. If a nurse has offended you tell her so in the manner you would like to be told rather than the 'do you know who i am?' approach. Nurses are abused, overworked and underappreciated not to talk of underpaid. Guess where the majority of your good nurses and doctors have gone? To USA and Europe! those who are left are making plans as they speak too so try and be kind and courteous. All that said, there are indeed very rude and lazy nurses and doctors out there. But why are they so? simply because they are products of society, everywhere you go you see rude nigerians, in the bank, post office, airport, government offices, shopping malls, cinema and the streets there are rude nigerians! The world dislikes nigerians just as much as they dislike Americans because they are loud, rude, think they are better than everyone else and their money buys them everything and gets them anywhere. Be different, treat others as you would like to be treated. Charity begins at home |
skillzbae:You slapped a nurse who you felt was being rude to you? You are very lucky you didn't try that in my hospital, even if the cleaner or the gate man is being 'rude' to you if i ever hear or come across such nonsense I will have you arrested on the spot, sick or not and make sure i drag you through the courts till you and your family are broke for generations to come paying compensation. It is your type that talk with their hands, beating your wife/husband, housemaid, colleagues, driver and children to a pulp because of your misplaced ego and feeling of self worth. You are in a 'civilised' society believe it or not and there is no place for violence. If you can't express yourself verbally or go through the right channels then leave it unsaid. Will you go to a bank, police station, airport or a supermarket and slap someone? I guess you probably would come to think of it. Why don't you go abroad and slap people who are rude to you? We don't need people like you in any society |
How many people have failed their English and comprehension test today? A captain in the Cameroonian airforce (A group captain is equivalent to army colonel or navy captain) died and is the most senior officer to die battling Boko Haram not the most senior officer in the Cameroonian armed forces. The most senior officer will be the chief of defence staff and he certainly won't be on the battle field. That is how you fail a simple aptitude test and wonder why you failed after you seemed to answer all questions correctly. If it doesn't make sense read again |
chimoz:Minimum standard of care for any patient in a coma with a head injury is intubation and ventilation period. In a brain damaged patient or patient in a coma, there is no way of knowing whether the respiratory centre of the brain is intact or not ie functioning properly, that is why they are intubated (breathing tube) and ventilated till they show signs of waking up, this is tested on a daily basis amongst other parameters of life. However, I don't expect this patient to be ventilated as the resources are simply not available in Nigeria, this is unfortunately best possible care |
mgbeketoto:Well, it's better than being left to die by the road side. Admitted the neck collar is too big for a start, he could easily choke to death. He needs proper care following the principles of ABCs with the airway being the first priority. Ideally he needs endotracheal intubation and ventilation if he is in a coma and a CT scan of the brain with a view to neurosurgery if necessary. But who is going to pay for all that care? Hospitals are not charity organisations and they have staff to pay |
Often times, car owners get frustrated by other road users. Driving on Nigerian roads sha; na wa o! My top 5 are: 1. Keke riders coming behind you on high speed when you are turning, and your trafficker is clearly on. They end up bruising your car. Out of every 10 cars in Delta State, 6 will have marks of white and blue on their sides (colour of keke in Delta State)and bumpers. These Keke NAPEP or Okada riders whatever you may want to call them are specially selected for this job by having a unique combination of a subhuman IQ and a death wish. As a more intelligent being, please exercise patience and caution at all times. Dont spend your hard earned cash burying those who have a death wish 2. Roads normally have speed lane and slow lane. It is very annoying when I see people driving slowly on speed lane. Some will even drive in the middle, blocking every chance to overtake. You have no choice but to hoot and drive behind them; women are mostly guilty of this. Don't blame them blame the government, experience has shown them that potholes occur in every lane so just drive in the lane with the least potholes whether it is fast or slow doesn't matter, shock absorbers are expensive. Also not everyone behind the wheel is intelligent enough to drive sensibly 3. When someone drives recklessly in front of you and you try to correct or caution them gently, they scream, shout at you and insult you. So annoying. Well nothing gives you the right to be your fellow drivers keeper, if they wish to meet their maker sooner than planned, it's their business not yours. Just get out of the way so they don't take you on an unintended journey 4. When someone overtakes you, they look look at you spitefully as they speed past. I wonder why people do this Who are you to drive so slowly when they have an appointment with the emergency department at the hospital. They would rather be in traction and on life support than at work or home on a comfy sofa. Allow them their dreams, That look is a "mine is faster than yours" look. Just reply with a "my brain is smarter than yours look" or wave when you drive past them in a ditch 5.When following someone on the road, they suddenly make a turning without notifying the drivers behind by their traffickers. How dare you complain? You shouldn't be on the road unless you're psychic damn it! besides they own the road as they pay more tax than you, not! |
Rhozabeth:Bros, circumstances can be different, we don't know what height the baby fell from. If she is worried she should seek medical advice immediately likewise for anyone in a similar situation. However children tend not to hurt themselves too much when they fall from a height that is less than a foot and of course there are other variables such as age of child, mobility, conscious level, type of surface etc |
[quote author=coogar post=28656204]then you must have a fetish for watching male babies abused. ![]() I have just realised you're a troublemaker, how does my comment translate into a fetish for abuse of male babies or female babies for that matter? not responding to any of your comments anymore ![]() |
[quote author=coogar post=28654926]difficult? was it not you that told us some traditions should be abandoned for our sanity? why is abolishing the rubbing of cow-dung on umbilical cord very easy to accomplish but eradication of male circumcision would be difficult? Simple, everyone knows cow dung is filthy and is probably not a good idea but not everyone believes circumcision of males or females wrong |
[quote author=coogar post=28655406]female circumcision is prescribed in islam - so it's also a religious practise. Thanks for enlightening me, as I am not a muslim is there any muslim would can confirm this with the specific passage in the Koran? I'm too lazy to google Ah! I found some material http://islamqa.info/en/45528 |
Nonso23: Not every practice is dictated by religion, male circumcision is dictated by religion amongst jews so as long as they adhere to their faith they will continue to circumcise their males whereas traditions ie celebrating a particular day or season is not necessarily dictated by religion |
Are we saying that circumcision of males should also be stopped? That will be difficult due to the religious background of male circumcision. What is the argument for female circumcision? Is there any religious background to FGM? or is it just indigenous traditional beliefs regarding female chastity? or the I was circumcised so you shall be circumcised attitude? If it is deeply rooted in society how do we tackle this? support and monitor it ie performed in clinics under aseptic conditions rather than with a rusty old bleeding in a dirty room or ban it all together? Educate the public? or just wait for it to die out like some other practices I personally feel FGM is more of an issue and we should devise a plan for dealing with the issue. Constructive arguments and criticisms please, personal attacks are a disease in Nigerian forums, i just ignore them |
coogar:I have restructured my original post in order to avoid confusion, as I can see it can be misinterpreted to mean I was in support of FGM or MGM which I am not my point is FGM is worse than male circumcision! but that does not mean either are acceptable. I am also not a media sheep thank you very much, I am an informed professional. VVF is also associated with FGM not just childbirth in sexually immature females because of scarring and reduction in the introitus in the most radical practices of FGM seen in some cultures such as in the Somalians. So what has poverty got to do with 'enforced mutilation'? It is not just poverty and I can sense we are on the same page in that respect but I will add in the western world, yes there is teenage pregnancy but as you know they have their babies in better equipped and staffed hospitals and so have access to better healthcare. A 10-12 year old child having a baby in sub-saharan Africa is not the same as an older teenager, lets say for arguments sake 15-18, in the western world having a baby. So it's not a black and white argument and a teenager in the western world for one will be larger, more sexually mature and better nourished than one living in subsaharan Africa. They also have a higher rate of CS deliveries due to their smaller size which the African teenagers would not have access to so there are possible explanations for the lower rate of VVF. Birth trauma does exist in the western world but it is properly managed in most cases and is not a big problem and I should know because I see the longer term complications of birth trauma in my clinic. The main point I am trying to make is that FGM has a serious impact on the quality of life of those who have undergone the procedure. Thank you NJF |
coogar:Sorry but your argument is flawed, and your deductions are dangerous and misleading. Males and females are anatomically different. Circumcision may be deemed unnecessary and dangerous to both males and females but there are proven benefits to males ie HIV transmission reduction and no proven health benefits to the female though the risks are worse to the female. In extreme cases, The female is at risk of obstructed labour, vesico-vaginal fistula, pelvic floor problems etc which are long term and dangerous complications that lead to a reduced to a poor quality of life and even death. Female circumcision is rightly called Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is unnecessary and dangerous and that is a well documented fact. http://3.bp..com/_AamFwkF1y-U/TUh0--bLkDI/AAAAAAAAAW8/S3LpmRLq6AM/s1600/548px-FGC_Types.jpg Not all traditional practices are beneficial and so we use our modern knowledge and values to to assess useful and what is not rather than blindly follow 'tradition'. For example we would not rub cow dung on the umbilical cord in this day and age would we? NJF |
Vicjay1: and what are temperate regions?I think he is getting his tropical and temperate mixed up, don't you think? |
himkers: check the cartons/packs of all the apples you buy in stores, and roadsides and you will see they are all imported from abroad. I was told apples cant be grown in Nigeria; reason being that the Oyinbos injected a kind of chemical into the fruit that will make it impossible for it to grow anywhere other than their home countries.Yes it's true, I saw them inject every single Apple tree in the world! After witnessing this dastardly act, I made my grand father who is a native doctor inject every single yam, pawpaw and mango tree in Africa with jazz so they can't be grown abroad. So smile and enjoy your next meal of pounded yam and egusi, we are fighting back against the Oyinbos! Revenge is sweet but ignorance is a curse! |
The so called fake Shekau was captured, beaten and summarily executed, so how do we interrogate a corpse for information that can be used to deal with problem of Boko haram from the grassroots or top level Questions could have been asked Where do you get funding from? Where do you get supplies from? Who supports you? No professionalism just 'red mist' approach that's why Boko haram will remain a threat with the "kill me I kill you" tactics. |
I can see jungle justice is very much a Nigerian thing Hear the cries of the people "kill them all" "let them burn" "destroy them right now" No wonder the Aluu 4 were killed, they were given "instant justice" by the Nigerian public No trial. No jury. No justice! If all these bloody thirsty Nigerians posting here were in the army they would have killed all the surrendering Boko haram fighters coming out with hands up on sight. But civilians read about the army carrying out summary executions and they cry foul and mumble about human rights. I think we can safely say the Nigerian army is a product of society. There is no rule of law in Nigeria, From beating traffic lights to paying bribes to killing surrendering combatants, it's the way of life of many Nigerians. The law of the jungle rules in every facet of life. They should be tried and if found guilty, given the appropriate sentence as laid down by law, whether it be life imprisonment or a death sentence. Are there any Nigerians who think differently? |
Don't believe everything you read on the internet, nairaland included |
I believe Ebola exists, I rest You don't believe, do something about it. Travel to Lagos and visit the isolation ward, give everyone there a hug, take a picture, eat with them and put the picture here as proof ( your own standards) Once you can provide concrete verifiable proof, I will personally give you £1000. I put my money where my mouth is. You do the same. |
stagger: The biggest fool that lived. Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff of CNN ran a one hour documentary on the Kikwit outbreak in 1995. I watched it personally then and got to know about the disease. 19 years after, you drop out of dream street and start spewing your ignorance here. Better get educated bro. Ignorance is expensive.Well said. Ignorance not disease is the biggest killer in Africa. It's a well known characteristic of an ignorant society to blame external factors for their problems. You can see ignorance has been a big factor helping in the spread in the currently affected countries with Ebola. We are more at risk from the ignorant than the disease itself. |
So many ignorant posts on nairaland regarding this issue it's unbelievable. I can see the majority of Nigerians have no idea how the residency system works, the healthcare system in Nigeria has been running on fumes for years. It's only goodwill that has kept the engine running all this while. Blaming doctors for the decay is like blaming an air hostess for a plane crash. They are only part of the system, the healthcare system will only be as good as the leaders decide to make it. I also see a lot of people calling doctors 'useless' here. By the way your teacher will also be 'useless' if they don't have a classroom to teach in and your driver will be useless if he doesn't have a car to drive so what do you expect if you dont provide the right tools or working environment. Sacking or suspending resident doctors or whatever you want to call it only shows how ignorant our leaders are. Lots of people are clamouring for the heads of doctors to roll just because they are making a stand. The Ebola crisis has only amplified the problem but it wasn't created by Nigerian doctors. Even if they decide to go back to work what are they going to work with? It doesn't work like that anywhere in the world and it won't work in Nigeria either. You have to provide the facilities and equipment. Opening a grand building filling it with doctors and calling it a hospital and expecting the world to be instantly better is a very childish and simplistic way of looking at the issue. If our leaders had shown some initiative and foresight rather than looking after their selfish interests it would not have come to this and it is not all about money. Job satisfaction is not just dependent on how much you get paid but on facilities, job security and career prospects. After all how much are the politicians paid for what they do and how many lives do they save or are involved in saving everyday. And yes I'm a doctor, I'm just fortunate that I don't work in Nigeria but I still feel the pain of my colleagues. Can I just implore my colleagues not to waste their time getting into arguments with ignoramuses in the forum. It's like having a legal argument in court with someone who isn't legally trained just because they have read the legal times. They are simply clueless and you should not fuel their ignorance. |
Sacking resident Doctors is akin to a bus driver sacking his conductor.. Nuff said |

bjdon: The progress of blacks in the UK and US can't be compared on a like for like basis. Blacks have been in the US in large numbers for over 250 years. Since the end of the American civil war, the blacks in the North were more or less free to get an education and pursue their dreams. In the UK large scale black migration did not start till the 1950's and this was mainly from the West Indies. The vast majority of these migrants were blue collar working class with very little aspiration/ambition for themselves or their offspring. The professional black middle class in the UK has only really come into effect in the last 30 years and it mainly consists of those of African origin. I predict that a generation from now you'll see blacks in the UK occupying top positions in business and politics as it is the US today. What an intelligent comment! Happy new year to you |

emmydaike: This is serious......but the man.4 no.allow the.croc eat the guy leg nowOga, let me update you I was there watching them. As soon as the father rescued the boy, he had to deal with the crocodile as you recall it turned on him too. In order to appease the river gods, he decided to cut off the boys already mangled leg and offer it to the crocodile. So sorry to disappoint you, that's why he could not save the boys leg. After all it wasn't his leg and it was just his son he saved. ![]() |
