dedeorji:

You both are saying the same thing. If the embryo is SS, it will be discarded, which is still abortion any way you look at it.
How long is the process going to take before the desired result is achieved?

I don't agree with you, choosing not to use an embryo is not abortion.
If you have 3 embryos AA, AS and SS which one would you choose to use?

If you understand the IVF process you will know that several embryos are created in order to select a viable embryo so if 16 are created and you choose one you've committed 15 abortions?
An embryo is not a foetus nor is an egg or spermatozoa. That isn't the legal or biological definition of abortion.

It was for the best. If you're in Lagos, go to a General hospital close to you. Ask for the days when they hold clinic for SS patients and go and see for yourself what these warriors and their parents are going through. Trust me, it is not something you will wish for your worst enemy.

I doubt if you can use IVF to determine the genotype of your baby. At best, they will check the genotype of the embryo before implanting it into you. If by chance they are all sicklers, they will be discarded. How many of your unborn children to you want to waste before getting your desired result? Believe me, I don't think its worth all the stress and expenses. My only grouse with you and your ex was allowing the relationship to go further. You should have both called it off before investing so much energy and emotions into it.

Regarding genotype selection you're mistaken.

You can select the genotype of your embryo during IVF. It's through a process called PGD or prenatal genetic diagnosis.
It's expensive and I'm not sure if it's available in Nigeria just yet.
The process involves checking the genotype of the embryo prior to implantation.
So there is hope for AS or SS couples who wish to avoid the possibility of an SS child.
Travel / Re: Travelers Sit On The Floor As Abuja-Kaduna Train Sells More Tickets Than Seats by naijafresh: 4:15pm On Feb 14, 2017
It is very easy to work out the non exposed by the comments here, standing on a rush hour train is a common occurrence everywhere in the world with a rail system, even the most efficient.
To avoid standing I suggest you leave home early, if you don't want to stand don't board and either get a refund or wait for a later train.
Nobody forced you on to the train.

With a nascent rail system like ours we need to recoup costs and make it viable so I won't blame them for selling more tickets than seats.

What they should do is analyse demand and consider more frequent services if viable, remember empty trains don't make money. They wont bring a train into service just to carry a few extra passengers.

As much as it pains me for what this man went through, it pains me more that he did not SUE the hell out of them. That lawyer did not advice him well. Something like this, after bringing an action in civil suit against the hospital, then you can bring an action in criminal suit against the staffs individually.

This won't bring back his son but it sure as hell won't let the hospital off the hook either.

So who are you recommending he sues and on what grounds?
He can't sue the doctors, they are not responsible for supplying fuel
He can't sue the security man he will claim it's not his job to provide fuel or he left his duty post as he hasn't been paid for months
A liver scan is a diagnostic test and not a therapy so how will it make a difference in the long run

Sounds like he had fulminant hepatitis. Liver failure requires expert supportive treatment and that is simply not available in Nigeria.

Even if he had light 24-7, blood transfusion and fluids it's all up to specialist care the the recovery ability of the liver if recovery is to be a possibility.

Health commissioner and head of public health need to be sacked for showing how stupid they are.
Certainly know nothing about infection control.

Now they have put more people at risk all the way back to Edo state.

I really hope he was sent to a designated treatment centre with full precautions rather than just sent back to his hometown to die.

Likewise you can't take a loan to sow a seed or pay tithe.
It has to be money you earned or is at your disposal.

Politics / A Self Deceiving Country Called Nigeria by naijafresh: 9:05am On Sep 01, 2016
Culled from the Internet..

Twenty-one senators currently receiving pensions from government as ex-governors and deputy governors.

The current senators who once served as governors are Bukola Saraki of Kwara, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Kabiru Gaya of Kano, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Theodore Orji of Abia, Abdullahi Adamu of Nasarawa, Sam Egwu of Ebonyi, Shaaba Lafiagi of Kwara, Joshua Dariye of Plateau Jonah Jang of Plateau, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko of Sokoto, Ahmed Sani Yarima of Zamfara, Danjuma Goje of Gombe, Bukar Abba Ibrahim of Yobe, Adamu Aliero of Kebbi, George Akume of Benue and Isiaka Adeleke of Osun.

The former deputy governors in the Senate are Ms Biodun Olujimi of Ekiti and Enyinaya Harcourt Abaribe of Abia. Danladi Abubakar Sani served as the acting governor of Taraba state.

Many former governors are also in Buhari's Cabinet as Ministers. This includes: Ngige, Fayemi, Amaechi and Fashola (SAN).).

In Akwa Ibom State, the law provides that ex governors and deputy governors receive pension equivalent to the salaries of the incumbent. The package also includes a new official car and a utility vehicle every four years; one personal aide; a cook, chauffeurs and security guards for the governor at a sum not exceeding N5 million per month and N2.5 million for his deputy governor.

In Rivers, the law provides 100 percent of annual basic salaries for the ex-governor and deputy, one residential house for the former governor “anywhere of his choice in Nigeria”; one residential house anywhere in Rivers for the deputy, three cars for the ex-governor every four years and two cars for the deputy every four years.

It is alledged that in Lagos, a former governor will get two houses, one in Lagos and another in Abuja, estimated at N500 million in Lagos and N700 million in Abuja. He also receives six new cars to be replaced every three years; a furniture allowance of 300 percent of annual salary to be paid every two years, and a N30 million pension annually for life.

This is the reality for all the 21 ex govenors and deputy governors who are currently serving as senators. This same is also true of ex governors who are now serving as Ministers.

NOW I ASK:
How many years did these guys serve their states as governors and deputy governors? Is it more than 8years? Is that a reason to be entitled to pensions for life? Even if they are entitled to pension for life, must it be so outrageous?

As if that is not enough: HOW on earth can any public servant with conscience collect salaries and allowances as a senator or minister, and still have the audacity to claim pensions equivalent to the salaries of a serving governor in Nigeria?

IT ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE......

Once you are elected a senator or appointed a minister, you must forfeit any pension accruing to you from government at any level until you vacate office. This should also apply to senators collecting military pensions like former Senate President David Mark.
Yet these senators are in the Senate that is inviting the current finance minister to discuss the recession of Nigeria's economy. A senator pockets approximately 30 million naira monthly as salary and allowances. Our "honourables" are not interested to make laws that could restructure our country into economically autonomous federating States/Regions to save the country from sectional agitations that is threatening to destroy Nigeria. The sad and hopeless situation is that the rest of Nigerians are busy arguing based on party, ethnic and affiliations while these enemies of state continue to rape us.

Do you know that it costs tax payers 290m Naira yearly to maintain each member of our National Assembly in a country where nothing works & 80% of population earn below 300 Naira a day ? A working day earning of a senator is more than a yearly income of a doctor; it's more than the salary of 42 Army generals or 48 professors or 70 commissioners of police or more than twice the pay of the US President or 9times the salary of US congressmen.
Please say NO to looting of Nigeria in the name of democracy by sending this text to at least 5 others.
I think the country must have a referendum on salaries of senators. This must happen very quickly.

If the government can't we the masses must do something THINGS JUST CAN'T CONTINUE LIKE THIS

I'm sorry to hear but this was caused but Nigerians trying to take the law into their own hands.
Mob mentality prevails in a primitive society, how are they sure she was a kidnapper? Because someone said so? Have they seen the evidence?
You hear there is a kidnapper in the palace, you don't know the story but you carry your cutlas and storm the palace in order to kill the person. So what if you find out its your relative, will you still be shouting for blood? Aren't they entitled to a fair hearing? Isn't it possible they might have been framed?
Everyone deserves justice even a murderer but in the hands of the law and not the hands of a baying mob.

I'm sure the police were not expecting to be ambushed by a mob so they probably went in small numbers. After all why should picking up a suspect require a 100 man squad of riot control police.
What should have been a simple case of picking up a suspect for interrogation and them being charged to court if there is ample evidence with witnesses etc turned into a blood bath because of a barbaric crowd and people are blaming the police. I'm sure the crowd tried to wrest the suspect from the custody of the police and Oba in the palace and hence the ensuing chaos.

No sympathy I'm afraid, they shouldn't have taken the law into their own hands.
Meanwhile who is the rat in the palace who went out to leak palace business? The Oba should watch his back, his household isn't trustworthy

Business / Re: CBN Resumes Dollar Sales To BDCs by naijafresh: 12:20pm On Aug 07, 2016
This is a good analysis of the presented economic information, so bottomline, we are not exactly out of dollars completely or begging for dollars. However I do wonder how much of this inflow actually penetrates the economy.

No country will take the bold step of depleting the reserves as our financial ratings will plummet when the world bank etc see what's happening and our creditors will pull the plug. However we do have the excess crude account and it should be used to bolster the economy as that's what it was set up for. We should be able to see exactly what's happening to our income by having transparency all the way.

Our government is very good at siphoning money out and stashing in foreign banks rather than putting the money where it should be in the economy and driving economic growth.

We need a robust leadership and economic policies to take us forward

I very well understand your angle, and I am not insinuating the parts in bold, that said:

what is the total monthly Forex demand of the country as a whole?

what is the total Forex inflow (overseas remittances, investors, crude oil sales and other exports)?

And what are our Forex reserves?

Well, according to widely quoted figures from CBN we used to earn 3 billion USD a month before oil prices crashed and now we earn less than 1 Billion USD while our monthly dollar requirements are about N900 billion a month so roughly 3 billion USD against an income of less than a billion USD. I'm not sure if this accounts for all inflows or just earnings from crude.

Our reserves as at June 2016 are down to 26 billion USD from circa 40 billion USD. So we have been dipping ton our reserves. Its been quoted that if we sold dollars to meet current demand we would consume all our reserves in less than a year.

You are right.

Well, the remittances from diaspora goes to the BDCs now, which should bring their rates closer to the 'interbank' . . . harmonize rates sort of.

And, in addition, the CBN still needs to keep funding the FMDQ market properly until investors come in, it is BS listening to some quarters blaming the CBN for intervening (I wonder why Emefiele bothers about their noise). These are early stages, bar Canada, Switzerland, and a few countries, no country operates a 'clean float', there are always interventions, and we are beginners here . . .

And the CBN needs to choke the banks with both hands if need be to cooperate, or else the banks are very good at sabotage (and that goes for the BDCs now), as already being experienced.

So may I ask where the CBN is expected to get the funds to keep funding the FMDQ market?

We simply don't have the inflow of dollars to satisfy demand. It's not a simple matter of opening the nations coffers and depleting our reserves. The lack of income has to reflect in our economy until our fortunes are reversed.

See what floating the price of fuel did to demand, fuel importation and consumption was halved or reduced as people altered their behaviour. We can't keep spending like there is no recession like a lot of Nigerians want us to do. Left to some we should sell all our reserves at 167 to the dollar till we have nothing left. Then what next?

The nations you mentioned may intervene but they have the resources to do so and they back intervention up with other strategies.
Strategies don't have to revolve round artficially supporting the naira we also have to stimulate the domestic economy and reduce the craving for forex for luxury items etc. Which raises a question, what is a luxury item? Just because we don't produce an item in Nigeria should we ban the importation of the item because it adds strain to the dollar dependent economy?

Selling dollars to bdc and excluding banks to sell to the public fuels scarcity the more. 90% of BDC guys will get dollars at official interbank rate and sell to individuals at stupendous higher rate far from interbank rate which breeds scarcity.

To stabilize naira, sell to bdc and banks the true value of the naira and let market forces come into play. That's wen we shall see the true floating currency coming to play

I share your opinion, too many millionaires are being made in the banking sector at the expense of the wider economy

So someone abroad will send their money in foreign currency through imto and then funds would be dispersed in naira at official bank rates, let's say the bank buys this dollar from imto at 320, they would surely sell it to the bdcs for more than 340 so they the Banks would gain 20 naira per dollar,if that is multiplied by the projected 20b dollars then the banks in naija will make huge amount of money..

Only if you're desperate enough to use a 'registered' IMTO like western union etc as virtually everyone abroad has an informal way of sending money back home that doesn't involve the services of an IMTO and their artificially low rates.
The plan is for IMTOs to collect your money and sell to the banks at the CBN determined rate. The banks will then sell to the BDCs at the CBN determined rate but in reality there is a hidden mark up as we all know and your money ends up being sold on the black market for the prevailing rate. Net result is you are given N310 for your dollar and banks divert your money via BDCs etc to the black market where they sell for N390-400 under the table. So who's cheating who?

Regarding remittances, $20 billion is a conservative estimate. In my opinion they probably capture the transactions by registered IMTO but not the vast majority of transactions by individuals and small time operators.

They can't stop people sending money back home, they can only stop larger IMTOs from trading and the result is people will take their money somewhere else and there is no difference to the exchange rate if the dollar because the informal market or black market so to speak is practically independent of government is CBN policies.

I might even set up shop, come to think of it.
If you want to send pound sterling home securely please message me for details.
Please note I'm not a government registered IMTO so you will get the market rate for your money not the Hajj rate
Business / Re: CBN Resumes Dollar Sales To BDCs by naijafresh: 8:45am On Aug 07, 2016
The government can dance around as much as they like and keep chasing their own tails. The black market will continue to thrive in the current environment, there is a reason why it's called the black market and the government can't regulate this 'black market' however hard it tries. They are just chasing shadows.

The true value of the naira is the value all those who have dollars are willing to exchange for with those who want naira. It's the value they mutually agree to pay for it and is subject to the laws of demand and supply.

We currently have a two tier market situation, the black market will only mirror the rates offered by CBN when dollars are more readily available and there's no incentive to source outside or inside official channels unless you're hiding your activities.

You can't artificially force a nominal value on the dollar unless you have deep pockets as in billions of dollars in reserve to flood the market and reduce the pressures of the demand and supply aspect of the market. Major economies have tried to fight market forces and have eventually succumbed. They have hit their fingers burnt and learn to employ a different strategy such as economic stimulus not aggressive forex policies as they just make the banking sector richer. You can imagine what's happening in our already corrupt environment. It's once again the turn of the bankers to cream the top off the economy.

No one in his right mind even the governor of CBN will personally sell his dollars for N197 when he knows there is someone who is ready to offer N400 for it, it's as simple as that.
Compelling international money transfer operators to sell their remittances to a designated body so you can give them lower than the market value just drives them underground and encourages the black market.

The naira needs to be allowed to float and we need strong and sustainable economic policies without the impediment of corruption

Indeed, some things can not be explained and some have a scientific explanation. It seems what we can't explain as Africans we call witchcraft. I quite understand your view point. The problem here is World Remit does not bring in dollars but pays you in naira. Though, there was a time CBN mandated Moneygram and Western Union to pay people in naira. What happened was that they brought in dollars, sold them to the CBN and you get paid in naira. As regards World Remit, they pay you in naira, and kept the dollars from coming into the nigerian financial system.

You may prefer it but it destroys the macro economy.

Your explanation doesn't make sense to me..

If worldremit or other non registered players collect my pounds sterling, they still need to source naira to honour the contract to deliver naira to my recipient. This means they have to source or buy naira from somewhere. They certainly won't be buying naira from CBN at the artificially low rate as CBN will not give them market value for their Forex! They will be buying naira (in exchange for pound sterling) from secondary sources at a more realistic price.

That's why they offer better rates, western union as a registered operator is compelled to sell the Forex to CBN at CBN dictated rates that's why western union has the worse rates of transfer to Nigeria and I don't know anyone apart from the desperate, clueless or easy money people who use western union.

Why get N404 for your pound when you can get 490 elsewhere?
The Nigerians in diaspora mainly work very hard for their hard earned cash so they will naturally seek out the best value.
Moreover, CBN doesn't have the foggiest how much money comes into Nigeria via the informal network of money transfer. I suspect it's a lot more than the $20 billion quoted via the official channels as this is mostly used by multinational companies and perhaps clueless Nigerians

Another point, when oil prices were high and Nigeria was awash with petrodollars, naira was stronger and more readily available now we don't have enough Forex to go round because of our dollar and import dependent economy it is natural for naira to be weak and even get weaker.

CBN is compounding the issue by protecting our national pride instead of our economy, the naira needs to find its own level like the majority of the currencies in the world. All CBN is doing now is creating billionaires in the banking and financial sector at the expense of the rest of the country.

Excellent opinion! However, I insist that Buhari accept his full share of the blame, for the least fact that he has been Head of State before, and for the greater part because he is the incumbent now.

There is simply no ownership in our government. Nigeria is akin to a large-bodied cow tied to a tree in the market square at the mercy of hoodlums (leaders and their clannish followers) who creep in at night, each group armed with their slaughter knives, slashing away pounds of flesh and running back home with their meat. Regardless of how much pasture surrounds that cow, it will surely buckle someday, thanks to excessive bleeding...and an absent owner to protect it from the clannish thieves and their praise singers.

Excellent use of prose, the beauty and blessing of Nigeria as a nation and also sadly, its downfall is in its diversity, diversity means no ownership and importantly no national pride which leads to the 'let's steal our own and leave' mentality

Can someone please list the achievements of all our leaders in the past who had certificates then, especially when crude oil price was above $100.

We all complain about Buhari but we have forgotten that we have had very little credible leadership in this country since inception.
Our country is characterised by rampant corruption and insatiable individual greed. When we give the mantle to those who agitate for inclusion, they actually perform worse.

Nowhere in this country has levels of development worthy of a so called oil producing country. Even the so called south south with the extra derivation fund they fought for, what did their leaders do with it apart from share amongst themselves and their cronies.
Small oil producing states with less than 5 million people and yearly income of over $1 billion still have little to show for it but suspiciously their leaders are the wealthiest in Africa and have property literally in every continent.

As long as crude oil is below $50 a barrel and falling we are going to suffer some austere times so get used to it and stop blaming Buhari we are all to blame. Simply put, the standard of leadership you endure is the standard you accept.

I thought they said virus don't die... How is it curable then? Someone pls enlighten me as I av someone infected already

Viruses don't die in the sense that they continue to replicate ie increase in number in the immune system. But a single virus particle can be killed by heat, UV light, irradiation and antiviral agents etc depending on whether it is in the body or on a surface like a table top. You obviously can't expose your self to irradiation in order to kill a virus inside you etc.

In the human body, you can either suppress a virus completely with drugs in order for the natural immune system to get rid of it as in the case of Hepatitis C and the new drugs now available or suppress it sufficiently to reduce the inflammation in the liver and prevent the progression to cirrhosis and liver cancer

The most common sign of hepatitis (which means inflammation of the liver) is jaundice or yellow eyes and general malaise, some stages of hepatitis do not have jaundice as a feature and jaundice is a sign of an acute infection where the body's immune system is fighting to suppress the virus and is mounting a robust immune response hence the jaundice and ill health.

In some cases of Hepatitis B and practically all cases of Hepatitis A, the body can actually rid the body of the virus and all that remains is a natural immunity to future infections.

You hepatitis status can be determined by blood tests which if interpreted correctly can reveal current infection or previous exposure/infection

How sure are you that the hepatitis was gotten from a razor used 42 years earlier? Why and how did they all incubate this same hepatitis for decades, if at all that is true? Where is this special razor blade and the results from tests carried out on it?

The hepatitis could have been caught some time recently and perhaps bad drinking habits caused it to surface. Hepatitis is contagious and so people who share drinks and food can infect themselves with it. If it's more contagious than HIV then toilet use is a way in which it is spread(urine left on toilet seats, etc). Hepatitis can also be gotten from poorly washed fruits, too.

I believe more hepatitis awareness is needed. As a medical personnel, who says it's a cheap test, why doesn't the author encourage people to do it by actually stating the current price range?

There are different types of hepatitis, the hepatitis you refer to from poorly washed fruits, food and drink etc is usually Hepatitis A or even hepatitis E and is very common in socially disadvantaged environments with poor sanitation.

You can't get hepatitis B from a toilet seat and you can only get hepatitis A from a toilet if you do not wash your hands after using the toilet!

You can indeed contract hepatitis B and be unaware for several years as it is a chronic infection, if all siblings are infected with hepatitis B, then from the story given, this is a very plausible route of infection.

However, the lesson to be learned from the story however true it may be is gained by taking away increased awareness of hepatitis B and the usual routes of infection and not to be distracted by challenging the authenticity of the content.

No one really knows how a lot of people contract hepatitis B as it is a silent infection that can lie dormant for years and 85-90% of people who contract the virus actually clear the virus from the body naturally through their immune system. When you are contract tracing or looking for a likely source you are only stating the most likely route of infection not the 100% definite route of infection unless you had blood tests done before and after which showed your status before and after the supposed infective event. Only healthcare personnel usually can be in this category as they get tested in modern healthcare facilities

Business / Re: Open Message To CBN: Solution To The Arising One Chance Bus & ATM Theft. by naijafresh: 12:44pm On Jul 05, 2016
My solution is simple.

Have a code red PIN number. When used under duress your account simply states you have no funds available for withdrawal and asks you to contact your bank.
So even if you are dragged to the ATM at gun point there is no way of seeing that you have secretly blocked access to your account.

Bank security please take note

Good day!.....
I believe there are Christians in here. I am here to speak on an issue which I have taken time to think through.
I see a lot of christian folks in the medical profession and most times I ask what they are doing there. Every medical doctor is under an oath which Its origin is not fully known. Before u can be a doctor, u will have to swear the HIPPOCRATIC OATH......on the day of your INDUCTION. in the Christian faith, it was clearly stated that swearing of any form is not allowed and considered a sin. Why then do I see Christians in medical school? Are they not aware of this OATH? Or did they just choose to turn a blind eye to the truth?
The medical profession has always been like a cult since the days of Hippocrates. It was initially designed with knowledge of secrets of the practice that should only be passed down to children of physicians in the olden days. Medical practise actually started like a brotherhood/cult.....the medical logo says it all(a snake wrapping a cross).....my point here is anybody who calls himself a true Christian cannot become a medical doctor without SIN (TAKING THE OATH).

So my dear Christian friends, are you really for God or do you choose to go against his instruction just because you want to enjoy the gains of being a medical doctor?.......THATS BEING A HIPPOCRITE!

What a silly post!

I'm a doctor and I didnt swear any silly oath, thats an ancient practice and times have moved on. The oath has even been modernised as far as i can remember

Did I have to comment on this post? I ask myself
