An Indian pharmacist was confirmed dead on Saturday May 9, after he drank a chemical concoction he developed in a bid to treat Coronavirus.

47-year-old K. Sivanesan who worked with Chennai-based Sujatha Biotech, an Ayurvedic and herbal products company which was founded 30 years ago, died on the spot while his colleague, a managing director of the company who is an ophthamologist by qualification, was hospitalised after he fainted soon after he ingested the chemical component.

The two men reportedly ingested the chemical mixture of nitric oxide and sodium nitrate at a home in southern Chennai city.

Deputy Commissioner of Police,Ashok Kumar said;

“Our investigation revealed that Sivanesan died after drinking the preparation he claimed would help COVID-19 patients. His managing director fainted after tasting it initially. Further investigation is on.”

N.S.Vasan, designer-cum-media manager of the company said;

“Due to the lockdown, Sivanesan stayed in the city and one day told us he heard of some medicine from U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent speech for curing Coronavirus. He said it would bring more immunity and help to prevent COVID-19. Deciding to test the effect of the medicine, he went to Parry’s Corner and bought the powder. Sivanesan must have taken a heavy dosage of the ‘drug’ and he was killed instantly.

“All our products are ayurvedic. We used to test only herbal products. This was a chemical product that Sivanesan was testing though, and possibly for the first time ever.”

India currently has nearly 60,000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus. There are no approved medicines or vaccines for treating COVID-19, triggering a global race for a new drug for the disease that has killed 277,946 worldwide.

Nigerian singer Jaywon was arrested on Monday May 4 by policemen attached to the Dolphin Estate Division of the Lagos State Police Command, for violating the curfew order given by President Buhari.

Recall that President Buhari had declared an overnight nationwide curfew on April 27, in a bid to check the spread of Coronavirus. The curfew began on May 4 and will run from 8pm to 6am daily.

The singer was intercepted and taken into custody by 11pm on Monday while driving to an unknown location.

Jaywon whose statement was taken at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, Yaba, was charged before a mobile court on Tuesday May 5. He pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him, and was ordered him to pay a fine of N10,000. He was also ordered to do a 30 minutes community service.

A gay couple, Ross and Chris Muller. who are the first male gay partners to receive In-vitro fertilization (IVF), are set to welcome a new baby boy this summer.

The couple from Edinburgh are the first male same-sex couple to undergo fertility treatment through the UK's national health service after government banned using surrogate mothers.

The ban was lifted by the Scottish government in 2018 meaning that all couples, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, are eligible for free IVF treatment.

A surrogate mother, from Cambridge, was hired through a private company and a total of eight embryos were created from donated eggs and Ross’s sperm before one was transferred into the surrogate last November.

‘I think a lot of same-sex couples, male and female, don’t know that this exists, like we didn’t until we found out about it.’ He added: ‘Before we knew we could get it on the NHS we looked privately and the surrogacy journey is about £45,000. After we contacted the NHS, they initially said they wouldn’t look at us. ‘We had to keep pushing on that door and it was new to the hospital so they hadn’t done this before. That’s when they told us that we would be the first in Scotland to go through this.

Chris, 38, said: ‘We just can’t wait for it to happen after so long of waiting and fighting for it. ‘The nursery is now finished, we’ve just moved house and had a blank canvas, so got to work on that. ‘Both our families have been over the moon – it is my mum and dad’s first grandchild so they can’t wait.’

A 22-year-old man has been allegedly stabbed to death by a private security guard attached to Coca-Cola market, Onitsha, Anambra State.

It was gathered that the deceased, one Cletus Chisom, had an altercation with the security guard, Ibuchi Nwoju, over face mask observance before the guard stabbed him in his chest leading to his instant death.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Haruna Mohammed, said that the security guard had been arrested while the body was deposited at Toronto Hospital Mortuary for autopsy.

President Buhari has reacted to the gruesome murder of three students of the University of Port Harcourt, by a group of kidnappers.

Akpan had told the police that the students were kidnapped on the order of one Bright who accused the victims of betraying him after money was paid into the account of one of them. The arrested suspect confessed that they killed and buried the three undergraduates after raping the female among them, Joy Adoki.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, President Buhari in a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, commiserated with the families of the deceased students. He also extended his condolences to the university authorities and the Rivers State Government.

Describing the tragic occurrence as “sad and heinous,” President Buhari regretted that the “evil perpetrators have cut short the prospectively bright journey of these youths.”

He prayed that God will comfort all those who mourn the young students, and grant their souls eternal rest.

President Buhari, while noting that the Nigerian Police Anti-Kidnapping Unit has apprehended some of the suspected perpetrators, further directed the Police Authorities to intensify search for other culprits and bring them to justice.

According to the President,

“This administration will continue to equip the law enforcement and security agencies to bring to an end the evil activities of kidnappers in the country.”

The Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of five members of a family who were all found dead in their apartment located in City Estate Layout, Amokpo-Nike near Enugu on Wednesday morning, April 29.

A statement from the state police command spokesperson, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, says the sixth member of the family, a boy, was found unconscious and had been rushed to a hospital

“The command’s knowledge of the unfortunate development followed a complaint received on April 29 at about 2.00 p.m. at Unity Police Station of a sudden and unnatural death of a family of six at City Estate Layout, Amokpo-Nike, Enugu. The operatives of the station, led by its Divisional Police Officer, SP Siga Malgwi, immediately moved to the location where they saw them lying lifeless in a room.

The building was cordoned off, while Enugu East Local Government Health Authorities were contacted for examination and evacuation of the bodies. However, in the course of disinfecting the building before the evacuation, the only son of the family, Arinze Onyekwe, was found to be in coma.

Arinze was immediately rushed to the hospital where he is said to be recovering. Other members of the family whose bodies have been evacuated to the hospital for medical autopsy included: Dominic Onyekwe, husband; Chinaza Onyekwe, wife, who is suspected to be pregnant; Chioma, Oluebube and Blessing their daughters” he said

Ndukwe said the police has since launched a full scale investigation to ascertain the cause of their death.

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC has warned Nigerians against drinking bleach to treat COVID-19.

This advise comes days after William Bryan, acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate, presented the results of US government research that indicated Coronavirus appeared to weaken more quickly when exposed to sunlight and heat. The study also claimed that bleach could kill the virus in saliva or respiratory fluids within five minutes and isopropyl alcohol could kill it even more quickly.

NCDC in a post shared on its Twitter handle, warned Nigerians not to attempt to ingest bleach as Nigeria continues to battle the Coronavirus pandemic. The agency says ingesting bleach exposes a person to health complications and even death.

Earlier this week, Nigerian talented female artiste, Tiwa Savage, in an Instagram Live session, displayed in another dimension as she sang Christian songs to lift up souls and as well had a chat with her fans.

During the chat Tiwa Savage revealed that the Coronavirus pandemic had humbled her.

Fifteen Imams have been arrested by the police in Kano for allegedly conducting Friday congregational prayers in defiance to the government’s lockdown order imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state.

Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had ordered the total lockdown of the state for the initial period of seven days, in which all forms of religious gatherings including Friday and Sunday congregational prayers were suspended for Muslims and Christians respectively.

The spokesman of Kano Police command, DSP Haruna who paraded the suspects on Monday, disclosed that they were arrested for leading Juma’at prayer in violation of the government order meant for public safety.

He said the suspects were arrested at Kano Municipal, Garko, Gwale, Karaye and Tarauni local government areas of the state. He said the suspects were apprehended by members of Kano State Hisbah Board who transferred the case to the police for thorough investigation and prosecution.

“The suspects were arrested for defying the lockdown order by leading Friday congregational prayers in their respective localities. You must note that the decision for the lockdown was reached in consultation with the religious leaders in the state but these people, most of whom are not Imams, out of defiance, went ahead to organise and lead the prayer,” he said, adding that the suspects had confessed to their crime and would be charged to court.
