Civil societies in Rivers ready for showdown - South-south

Different civil societies in Rivers State have condemned the recent decision by the Federal Government to hike the price of fuel from N65.00 to N141.00. They have also declared January 9, this year, as a rally day, rebuffing the State Commissioner of Police, Suleiman Abba, who on Monday, stated that “the strike does not mean demonstration and procession.”

The groups, United Action for Democracy(UAD), Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development, Ogoni Solidarity Forum and Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), on Tuesday, criticized President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for being insensitive to the hardship faced by Nigerians.

National General Secretary of UAD, Comrade Ken Henshaw, while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, said they were ready for a peaceful protest no matter the statement made by the Police Commissioner.
Henshaw insisted that their fundamental human rights to orgainse a peaceful assembly should be respected.
The groups called on members of the public to resist the fuel subsidy removal and frowned at government’s unwillingness to arrest and prosecute the cabals involved in illegal petroleum business in the country.

We shall mobilize citizens to begin an indefinite series of actions aimed at registering discontent over the suffering this policy has already begun to bring about,” he stated.
The CLO, in particular, urged for the immediate sack and arrest of Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonji-Iweala, and Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido, for imposing fuel hike “aimed at destroying the economy and inflicting more pains on the suffering people of the country.”
In a statement signed by its chairman in the State, Obodoekwe Styvn, the CLO demanded the disbandment of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency(PPPRA) for its un-usefulness to the society.

There shall be no protest in SE land since we are already doing so elsewhere in the SW and N? How many Yorubas and Northerners in the East are protesting?

Most of you mentioning Igbos and south easterners here are vindicating my point. Your so called revolution will never succeed if you continue showing ethnic hatred and exposing your myopic tendencies. If Nigerians will ever revolt, it has to be as Nigerians. If all of you are still seeing the differences in Nigerians, you will never succeed in any revolution.
There are Igbos among the protesters. If you actually think Igbos are not there, can we see your evidence?

@ Alj Harem; You are very mumurish for equating the view of one person with the feeling of a whole ethnic group. This is why I think you reason like a goat.

@Rhino.5dm; Your tribalistic rants are becoming too smelly here. Shut your dirty mouth! This is either a revolution by Nigerians or not. From all indications, you are implying that it is only Yorubas and Northerners that are protesting. How can you say that if you don't have a myopic brain. Are Igbos not in the North and West. Must there be riots in Igboland before you can conclude that Igbos are taking part in it? Anumanu ofia.

Overall, you two vindicated my reason for this post. Revolution will never be possible with people like you two.
You are wasting your time with that anumanu?

PoliticsRe: Why Are There No Subsidy Protests In The SE/SS Oil Producing States? by Nchara: 3:56am On Jan 04, 2012
The real protest should come if the subsidy removal is not used for the listed purposes but used instead to subsidize corruption.
The SW and the North should give GEJ a chance to perform and succeed. They are the clog in the wheel of progress now.

Yoruba protest = failed protest, AS USUAL. Waste of time

Removal of subsidy is a perfect thing to do to help jumpstart the economy
My only problem is the timing. It should have come around April when folks have settled down to the new year
But now that it has come, protesting is a useless venture
Yes, it is too early to say that the SE/SS will not protest, but I pray they do not.
The police should quell any unnecessary protest: this one is one unnecessary protest that my family will not be involved in.

S'East to benefit from planned refineries, says Ben Obi

From Chuks Collins, Awka

MORE light has been shed on government's plans to establish three new refineries in Kogi, Lagos and Bayelsa States, with assurance that more parts/zones in the country would benefit, including the South East geopolitical zone, soon.

Opt out

This was disclosed in Awka yesterday by President Goodluck Jonathan's aide on Inter-Party Relations, Chief Ben Obi.

Speaking on the proposed new refineries and the removal of petroleum subsidy, Obi urged Nigerians to see government's programmes on their merit rather than from sectional, zonal or other divisive perspectives.

The new refineries, he said "were to be wholly private sector-driven, and the one for Bayelsa was to be sited at Oloibiri, the location where the first oil well was discovered in Nigeria.

He said Kogi plays a very central role geographically in the nation's affairs, same as Lagos in terms of commerce and industry too.

He therefore called for calm and understanding, assuring that the project which is coming in phases would in the next phase be extended to other zones in the country especially the South East.

Obi who condemned the recent spate of bombings in parts of the country, admitted that it was worrisome, but added that there would be a change in terms of security in the coming year.

"You can see that most of the suspects behind the recent bombings have been apprehended. Our security agencies are working round-the-clock to tackle the challenge, bring the situation under total control and keep citizens safe. The various arms of government have carried out a progressive training and retraining of all security officers.

On the subsidy issue, Obi appealed to Nigerians to give Jonathan a chance, because he has given his word of honour on it.

"In the past such packages come without any working document of all issues involved or what and where to channel the proceeds and why, but the present administration has put the whole cards on the table for all to see," he said.

Nigerian Tribune learnt, on Thursday in Ibadan, that the chairman and his deputy, Alhaji Abass Oloko, had been at each other's throat since their appointment into the board by the present administration.

Their rivalry, Nigerian Tribune learnt, was exhibited before their departure for hajj and even while in the holy land.

The source further disclosed that the board chairman had summoned a meeting of board members with the intention of briefing them on the last hajj and the preparations for the new year.

The vice chairman, the source said, complained that he was not officially informed about the planned meeting and, therefore, stormed the board's secretariat at Olodo with people suspected to be thugs and asked them to seal off the offices to prevent the meeting from taking place.

It took the intervention of a top government official in the state before the offices were reopened.

According to the source, another meeting had been fixed for Thursday before the attack at the peace meeting.

The matter was reported at the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), while the board chairman was treated at the Adeoyo General Hospital.

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Femi Okanlawon, confirmed the incident and said that it was being investigated.

Efforts to get the board chairman to speak on the incident proved abortive, as his telephone lines were switched off

Women beheaded in Ogun
By Lukman Olabiyi

Friday, December 30, 2011

The christmas celebration in Idolehin Village, Ado-Odo Local Government Area of Ogun State was shattered as two Egun women were murdered in cold blood by unknown persons.

The victims, Funmilayo Awosah and Jodenu Ayinke were slaughtered in their sleep by unknown persons, who came to the Abule Babalawo in Idolehin village on the night of the boxing day.

According to the villagers, the assailants, who murdered the two women did not stop at killing them, but also took their heads away. The villagers woke up to behold the headless Unclad bodies. Already, the state Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran has stepped into the investigation to unravel the mystery behind the gruesome murder of the two women and bring the perpetrators of the dastard act to book.

A team of crack detectives from the state command stormed the village and met the headless bodies in the pool of their blood. The security operatives commenced preliminary investigation immediately. The villagers, who are mainly Egun people accused land speculators, who had been terrorising the community for sometime.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Command spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the incident. According to him, the command was aware of the incident and the investigation was already on to bring the perpetrators to book.

Somtime, a farmer in the community, Abiodun Ogungbe was killed on June 29, 2011 less than 48hours after the naming ceremony of his new baby. Ogungbe’s body was found by the roadside some minutes after he was abducted in the presence of his wife.

Investigation into his death has remained inconclusive.

Three die as violence rocks two Ogun communities

Another round of bloody violence broke out in Ota, Ogun State, on Tuesday in which no fewer than three people were feared dead while several others were injured.

The clash was allegedly over the ownership of some parcels of land in Ijoko and Sango-Ota.

The disturbance, our correspondent learnt in Abeokuta on Tuesday, erupted as the warring parties were returning from the High Court, Ota, where a judgment was to be given over the enforcement of the order of the Supreme Court, ceding the massive land to the family of one Matanmi.

The violence occurred shortly before the Ogun State Government declared a dusk- to-dawn curfew in Ado Odo town over a reported communal unrest in the community.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Gbemi Onakoya, in Abeokuta on Tuesday, said that the tensed situation in the community had necessitated the declaration of the curfew from 6pm to 6am. The contenders are fighting over the stool of the Olofin of Ado Ado.

Previous violent clashes had claimed lives while valuable properties had been destroyed in Ijoko and Ota in connection with the moves by the Matanmi family to enforce the judgment of the apex court.

Hundreds of house owners in the town had also relocated over the re-curring violence in Ijoko.

Details of the fracas still remained sketchy as at the time of writing the report, it was, however, learnt that the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Musa Daura, had relocated to Ota to monitor the situation and ensure that the escalating violence was curtailed.

Guns were said to be booming from different parts of the town, a development a police source said indicated that the parties had prepared for the violence regardless of the outcome of the judgment, which was eventually adjourned.

“These people could not have entered the court room with their weapons, but those weapons were used when the parties clashed on the streets,” the source said.

The Police Public Relations Officers at the state command, Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the clash in Ota, admitting that only one person was killed.

“Several people were injured and they have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Only one person was killed, not three. We are fully on ground to curtail any violence. The CP is already in Ota over the crisis,” he said.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Alhaji Lamidi Odulawa, said the warring parties in Ado Odo had started attacking themselves in the night, which he noted could only be curtailed if the cufew was enforced.

“The tension in the town is too much. People are now attacking themselves in the night. We have asked the police to move in. The Supreme Court had already given a judgment in favour of the sitting Olofin, Chief Lateef Adeniran, and nobody can reverse the ruling of the Supreme Court.

“With the police in place, we will be able to know those behind the crisis,” said Odulawa, who added that the state had mediated in the crisis and regretted that the parties had ignored the intervention of the state government.
