Man throws wife, child out for voting against his party Written by Boluwatife Amusan Thursday, April 14, 2011 AN electronic repairer who lives on Bello Street, Felele, Ibadan, Oyo State, has reportedly sent packing his wife and two-year-old child for voting for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), instead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the National Assembly election last Saturday. advertisement According to a source who craved anonymity, the said man, in his 40s, had boasted that he would send his wife and child packing from his house for voting for ACN instead of PDP. The man, who was also said to have dreamt of having Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala elected as governor of Oyo State, after observing fasting and prayers, openly campaigned for the Oyo State governor. He stated further that Governor Alao-Akala had done great for the people in the area during his first term by attending quickly to their calls to repair the road on his street, compared to the previous governors, a development that made him to do anything within his capacity to support the second term bid of Chief Alao-Akala. |
For President Jonathan, Lagos widows take to the streets By KEHINDE ADEREMI Thursday, April 14, 2011 You could see it in their eyes and in their attires. They cut the picture of abandoned wives. And indeed, in a way, these were all women abandoned by their husbands. advertisement Advertisement They are widows, women who have for long been experiencing the pain of losing their breadwinners and the agony attached to widowhood. But in spite of their condition, they are resolute. They still believe that God could do a turnaround in their lives. And they nurse a strong hope in President Goodluck Jonathan, insisting that their lives would become better if Jonathan wins the presidential electionon April 16, 2011. Recently, the widows gathered in their numbers inside a garden at the Mazamaza area of Lagos. There, they organized a campaign rally for President Jonathan even as they prayed fervently for God to grant the President success in the presidential polls. Besides praying for Jonathan, the widows also made a passionate appeal to women to cast their votes for Jonathan. Many people in Mazamaza would not easily forget the day the widows, all registered with a non-governmental organization (NGO), the Jesus Healing Hands Care Global Outreach Incorporated, stormed the streets for a house-to-house campaign for the President From the organisation’s headquarters at Lawley’s Garden, Old Ojo Road, they moved from street to street with various banners and posters, urging all and sundry to vote for the president. Speaking on the campaign rally, founder of the organization, Prince Odumegwu Ofokansi, explained that the outing was to express their support for President Jonathan and to deliver the message of hope to Nigerians. “We know, without a doubt, that if President Jonathan wins the election and is sworn in again as president, he will take care of widows. As a result of his humble background, we believe in him. That is the reason why the widows are supporting him.” He informed the reporter that the organization was founded seven years ago, asserting that it has since then been at the forefront of catering to the needs of widows. “We meet every last Sunday of the month,” he said. “And the beauty of this organisation is that it goes beyond tribes. We have widows from every tribe in Nigeria.” He said though the challenges of supporting about 500 widows are quite enormous, God had been there for them. “It is by God’s grace that we meet the demands of all of them on the days of our meetings,” he said. “When they come here, we give them foodstuff, money and other necessary items they might need for their day to day activities. It is a pity that since we’ve been clamouring for the wellbeing of widows, nothing has been done to save their situation. Nigerian widows are suffering. They are being neglected and humiliated. That is why we are appealing to President Jonathan to remember them and take up their case. It is in their best interest to vote for a President that will cater for them.” Mrs. Jemimas Ibraheem, a 65-year-old widow, said the NGO had been her saving grace since she joined it about four years ago. Said she: “When I lost my husband five years ago, I thought my world had ended. The agony and pain to cater for my seven children became a big problem and I lost all hope. But Allah met my needs through this NGO and since then, I’ve been able to start my life anew.” Mrs. Mosunmola Saliu’s story was quite pathetic. According to her, nobody from her late husband came to her rescue during her trying period. Taking care of her six children became a herculean task, she said. “My story changed the day I joined the group. I thank God for the life of the founder and the co-ordinator.” Princess Ify Chuka, the coordinator, explained why widows flock to the organization. “Apart from giving the widows foodstuff, clothing, drugs and other items, we encourage the young ones to acquire knowledge. Some of them are between 50 and 65 and nobody cares for them. But those that are still young, we offer them training in skill acquisition and other human development programmes. Some of them are trained in Tie and Dye, tailoring and other related skills. We train them on how to catch fish, rather than giving them fish everyday. I know what it takes to be a widow. I have once been a widow and I know the kind of hardship they go through. It is sad that no one recognizes their plight. That is the reason we have been crying to God to use President Jonathan to alleviate the suffering of the widows. We are concerned about their problems. We visit them when they are sick. We pray for them every day because we are happy to share in their pains and sorrow, all to the glory of God. That is why they all went out today to campaign for President Jonathan.” |
Thank God that Ribadu will lose. Otherwise Tinubu will simply auction Nigeria. I have never seen any Nigerian more roguish than Tinubu. |
They have damaged my candidacy, says Ribadu By Olu Jacob April 14, 2011 06:07AM print email A dramatic 24 hours in the presidential race reached a climax yesterday after Nuhu Ribadu, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) flag bearer, expressed regret for agreeing to step down for his Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) counterpart, Muhammadu Buhari. On a frenetic day of alliance talks, there were several twists and turns before the deal eventually collapsed. Mr. Ribadu had, during an intense moment in the discussions, agreed to dump his presidential ambition in order for the long mooted coalition to work. The collapse of the alliance means that Mr. Ribadu is going into Saturday’s presidential election with what will seem like little conviction amongst his supporters. In a message sent to NEXT, Mr. Ribadu conceded that the reversal would have a lasting impact on his future prospects. “This is the way this thing has been going all through,” he said. “I know the damage they have done to me personally, but I leave that to God.” Sources at the three day meeting between the ACN and the CPC caucus said that on Tuesday, a decision had been made by Mr. Ribadu in which he accepted to step down for Mr. Buhari for the April 16 election. “He was surprisingly cool about it all,” said an ACN delegate at the meeting. “He said it has never been a do or die affair with him and he was willing to leave the race so that the alliance will work.” Mr. Buhari and a former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, led the discussions for their respective sides. Mr. Buhari had reportedly been eager for the meeting to succeed but was unwilling to back down on certain points, including the idea that Mr. Tinubu becomes his vice president. Mr. Ribadu said he was willing to sacrifice his ambition but others at the meeting were not so selfless. “We have done our part. I have agreed to step down. We have sacrificed for the country. And they won’t even sign a simple letter?” he lamented. The letter that ended a hope After three days of intense deliberations, the parties finally reached a consensus on all the outstanding points. They agreed to field a single candidate, CPC’s Muhammadu Buhari, in the election; that ACN’s Nuhu Ribadu will immediately announce he was no longer running; that the ACN will campaign vigorously for Mr. Buhari’s candidacy, especially in the south west where it has such a great influence; that although it is too late to field another running mate for Mr. Buhari, Tunde Bakare, the CPC vice presidential candidate, will step down immediately after the election; that Mr Tinubu will not be allowed to replace him but may nominate those who would; that Mr Buhari reserved the final right to choose from among the list of three candidates that Mr. Tinubu submits. Mr Tinubu, whose vice presidential ambition had also been blamed for the collapse of previous talks, immediately named three people for the job. They are Yemi Osinbajo a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Mr Tinubu’s administration, Yemi Cardoso, who was Mr Tinubu’s budget commissioner and a former Lagos State finance commissioner, Wale Edun. Although Mr. Bakare had agreed to these terms, he balked when the ACN delegates insisted he signed a post dated resignation letter to seal the deal. He vehemently refused to append his signature to such a document. According to a source, it was at this point that the overnight meeting, which went on till 2am, reached an impasse. The ACN refused to take Mr Bakare’s word that he will abide by the meeting’s decision. “How else could they make sure that he would not back out later?” said a former governor who was also a facilitator at the meeting. No alliance anymore The ACN delegates, who at this point were visibly aggrieved by the CPC, quickly started some damage control. The party’s national chairman, Bisi Akande issued a statement assuring its supporters that the party has not entered into any alliance with the CPC. “We as party that believes in democratic values have therefore decided that in the overall interest of the parties involved, our democracy as well as our country, it is better for each of the parties to go into the presidential election on its own platform,” he said. Also smarting from the breakdown in discussions, Bunmi Aborishade, the coordinator, Team Ribadu USA Convener, Ribadu for Nigeria Coalition said, “Please note that the alliance talk between the ACN and the CPC to field a single candidate finally broke down yesterday because Buhari/CPC reneged on the earlier agreement that the party with the highest number of seats in the National Assembly elections would produce the presidential candidate for the two parties.” A small window However, Rotimi Fashakin, the CPC spokesman, said talks were ongoing. “I really don’t know when you get that information. Talks are ongoing and 10 minutes in politics can make a lot of difference so, don’t rely on the information you got 45 minutes ago. I believe that all the impediments have been removed.” When asked if the two parties have finally agreed to go into the election together and settled all differences, he said: “I believe so.” Mr. Akande similarly left open a small window of opportunity. “If at the end of the election on Saturday there is no clear winner we will make a decision on which way to go, in the overriding interest of all Nigerians,” he said. AD mobilises Yoruba in the North for Jonathan •Says he remains the most credible candidate | Print | E-mail Written by Taiwo Adisa Wednesday, 13 April 2011 The Alliance for Democracy(AD) has flagged off a mobilization exercise for its members and Yoruba in the North to ensure they vote massively for President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday. A meeting of leaders of the AD and Yoruba community in the North held in Abuja on Tuesday further reinforced the decision of the party to adopt President Jonathan as its candidate for the presidential election this weekend. A leader of the AD, Senator Femi Okurounmu, who spoke at the Abuja meeting said that the Yoruba have got many reasons to back Jonathan. He stated that apart from Jonathan’s recognition of the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, by naming the Liberty Stadium Ibadan after him, the president is also a detrabilised Nigerian. He said that the Yoruba have every reason to protect one of the prophecies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who predicted that an Ijaw man would soon be president of Nigeria. Okurounmu stated that all other presidential hopefuls were not committed to the cause of the South-West. National chairman of the AD, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa said in an address at the meeting that President Jonathan remained the choice of the Yoruba people across the country. He said that the AD has also adopted the President as a mark of confidence that the man would deliver on his promises. Senator Akinfenwa said: “The Yoruba, in living to the true ethic of Omoluabi, will never fail to identify a good talent wherever he or she is resident. We have seen the true qualities of a good leader in President Jonathan. He is amiable, and not desperate for power. “He promised on electoral reforms and we saw that he immediately set the machinery in motion through his appointments into INEC. We have seen in him a man who is capable of redefining Nigerian politics and bringing back the desired integrity, fairness and respect the country deserves in international community.” |

Tears flow, as NUC closes illegal varsity study centres in Lagos By GABRIEL DIKE Tuesday, April 12, 2011 Some students of alleged illegal universities in Lagos broke down in tears recently, when the National Universities Commission (NUC) committee on closure of illegal universities stormed their study centers and shut them down for operating without the Federal Government’s approval. The closure ended their dream of acquiring university education after investing so much. advertisement The NUC committee led by the chairman, Professor Ebenezer Adebowale, Legal Adviser, Mr. Moses Awe and a member, Mr. Lawrence Oguguwa stormed some of the illegal universities while the students were either receiving lectures or preparing for their examinations. In the state of confusion that ensued, the proprietors and lecturers abandoned them to their fate and disappeared into the air. The first port of call for the committee was Topmost International Comprehensive Secondary School, Maryland, Lagos where two illegal university study centres (Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso) were said to be operating from, with over 1,000 students offering MBA and degree programmes. Unqualified lecturers were reported to be teaching the students. Professor Adebowale demanded from the Coordinator of the Centre, Mr. Bolaji Taiwo, the approval from NUC to operate the study centre. But when Taiwo produced a letter dated August 2006 and addressed to the Vice Chancellor, it was discovered by the commission that it was meant for the Ogbomoso main campus of the institution. Right away, Adebowale informed him and students studying at the place that the centre is illegal and has been closed down. “Some people are making money out of you,” Adebowale told the bewildered students. “Any certificate that you are issued here will not worth it, will not be accepted.” In a swift reaction to the closure, some of the students, particularly the 300 and 400-Level students bemoaned their losses while ladies among them were close to tears as they revealed that it cost them between N60,000 and N80,000 tuition fee per session to read in the place and bombarded Professor Adebowale with questions on what becomes of their fate. At Itire Primary School, Ijesha, Lagos, the committee discovered a foreign institution, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana operating an illegal study cenre together with University of Ibadan (UI) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife. They were all offering degrees and MBA programmes with over 800 students receiving lectures at the centres. Most of the students were either in 100 and 200 levels. When the committee demanded for the certificate of approval, the students directed them to the Head Office of the operator at Ojuelegba. “The University of Education, Winneba, Ghana is not known to the NUC. We will close it until you show us the NUC approval. As long as you are going to work with the certificate, it will not be possible to work using the certificate that you obtained here,” Professor Adebowale informed the students who surrounded him. “Why did the owner and lecturers run when they saw us?”, he queried. “If they have any approval let them produce it.” At this point some of the students could not hold back tears and wept profusely with one of them, a 200-level Management Science student, asking what becomes of his investment amounting to over N250,000. Another student, Ben Obi, a trader informed the committee that the operator told them that the study centre was approved and having spent over N160,000, he wondered what the future holds for the students after the closure. A 100-level female student said she paid about N68,000 aside other sundry expenses and revealed that they were taken to Ghana for the matriculation ceremony. At Charles Lorie French Academy, FESTAC, Lagos, a drama played out when the Coordinator, Ibrahim Baba attempted to deceive the committee by showing them a poster bearing the name of an institute, (Institute of Security Management Operations) which indicate they run security management courses. But Adebowale and his members insisted on seeing things for themselves, they discovered that they were running ABU and OAU programmes including MBAs there. The committee met about four lectures in progress and discovered that the lecturers particularly the one taking the MBA class was not qualified to teach such a class as he has only Masters. Another lecturer abandoned his MBA class when he got wind of the presence of the committee. When the Legal Adviser of the committee announced the closure of the study centre, the students lamented their plight in the light of the huge sums they had spent so far pursuing degree and post-graduate degree programmes at the centres. Some of the ladies screamed and wept. It was complaint galore as the students revealed that they paid N200,000 for the MBA programme and claimed ignorance of the status of the place. A female banker who read History and enrolled for MBA told Daily Sun that she paid over N180,000 and needed the certificate to safeguard her job while some of the married ones wondered how they would relate the situation to their husbands at home. But what appears to be the biggest discovery by the NUC committee was made at Chartered Institute of Administration, Ojo where the staff told the committee that they only prepare students for ICAN and professional programmes but an eagle-eyed member of the committee spotted students results sheet pasted on the wall and bearing Evan Enwerem University, Owerri, Imo State. A search later led to further discovery that showed they were indeed making false claims. Soon after the discovery, the operator abandoned the students who besieged the committee while some of the lecturers that were caught teaching claimed ignorance of the status and could not provide cogent answers to many questions asked. A 300-level Management Studies student told Daily Sun that he and his colleagues paid N80,000 per session and that the payment was made into IMSU Global Account with an old generation bank. A lecturer with a Masters degree who was caught teaching Public Administration to MBA students was told in the presence of his students that he is not qualified to lecture them. But the moment the chairman of the committee, Adebowale announced the closure of the place, many of the students attempted to question his powers while others lamented the waste of resources and energy in acquiring a university degree. A female student reminded the committee that many students had graduated from the institute while others (100-level students) who paid huge amount wondered how they would recover their money as they were ordered to leave the place or get arrested. In his response, Adebowale, who is also the Pro-Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State advised students to crosscheck from the commission’s website before applying for admissions into any university and stressed that most of the VCs are not aware that people are using names of their universities to run study centres outside the main campuses. Some of the students who wanted to know from the committee what they could do in the light of huge expenses they had gone into in a bid to acquire university education were told to hold the operators responsible for their plight. However, they were offered the option of either enrolling with the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), University of Lagos Distance learning programme or having the proprietors of the centres arrange for them to go to the main campuses to continue with their studies if they are truly genuine. In a chat with the Daily Sun, the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olanrewaju said that operators of the illegal study centres are using its name to deceive students noting that “we don’t have any satellite campus in Lagos.” |

Obiagu1:Don't mind half-baked, myopic people like Abagworo. Zik and Awo and Waziri Ibrahim and Aminu Kano all tried regional politicking for national aspiration. How did they fare? When Zik played national politics, he (his party, I mean) won elections outside Igboland. But when he joined Awo in regional politics, both of them were buried, politically speaking. |
This is a short response to Abagworo: The only times Igbos got close to power at the national level were in national parties NPN brought Ekwueme as VP and another Igbo man (Ume-Ezuoke) as House Speaker at the same time Then regional parties like UPN and NPP were thoroughly trounced. Years after, PDP brought Igbos as Senate presidents The above is also true for Yoruba. They only smelled national power in a national party (PDP). Without a national party, Yorubas will, in all likelihood, not smell power again. The same is also true for the North, as both NPN and PDP are national parties. Then UNPP and GNPP, northern parties, were defeated just like UPN and NPP Current regional parties like ANPP, ACN, APGA, APP can play regional politics at the state gov and State House of assembly levels. When it comes to the Senate, Fed House of Rep and Presidency, only a fool will hope that a regional party will win a majority. Igbos have a good chance of leading Nigeria after the North in 2015. That can only happen with a national party, PDP. Or, if all the opposition parties can come together to form a truly national opposition party. Until then, PDP is here to stay. Igbos should continue to say no to regional parties for any national aspiration. If anyone says Igbos do not stand a chance at national leadership with the PDP, can that one tell me in which party Igbos stand a chance |
Eziachi:Se kwueshion I am not interest in that. I am only interested in their exploit in Ondo. |
Answer: His church will reject him, seeing how fake a pastor he is |
In a few days, we shall be singing the dirge for ACN and the rest sectional parties. GEJ all the way. Those rag tag parties should go back to the drawing board and form more national opposition parties. Only then can they be taken seriously beyond their shores. |
Labour party was formed by an Igbo man. Just like Tinubu formed ACN. That is why all its chairmen have been Igbo and will always be. See how we run things in Ondo ![]() ACN has no chance in Igboland. Dora will beat Ngige in the rerun. All of you blabbing now will, deep in your hearts, prefer that ACN takes charge in Ondo. It a'int gonna happen soon. |

This woman was rigged in by her husband. No be only PDP dey rig. LP(an Igbo-owned party) out-rigged everyone in Ondo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_Party_%28Nigeria%29 And who says she is the first female senator? Ignorance is not bliss An APGA senator has been there since 2007 in Imo; she had no court case. There are several PDP female senators without court cases. There are other Igbo women senators; as usual Igbo women set the pace, others follow. Indeed, ignorance is smelling in this post |
ACN has finally established itself as a regional, near-tribal party. PDP has shown itself as the only true party in Nigeria Buhari the serial loser is still losing Jonathan will still be president. He has delivered and he will deliver again There is just no way PDP will become a minority party in Nigeria. http://www.thisdayonline.com/

ekt_bear:What has election got to do with Igbo population in Lagos? Are they contesting for any positions there or do they all belong to one party? You should instead be advocating that ethnicity be added to future census data. BTW, not just Lagos. Data for Abuja and most of the states in Nigeria are strengthened by Igbo literacy levels. Overall, there is no comparing Yoruba with Igbo. We are years ahead. I am out. |
Ekt Bear From you link, it has finally been confirmed by outsiders (UNICEF) that both Igbo men and women are more literate than their Yoruba counterparts. We have been harping on this since Adam but they would not listen. Plus the fact that when you remove the 45% Igbos in Lagos, then the SW number goes down even more. The number removed from Lagos will buoy Ebonyi up. Where Yoruba dey beat Igbo sef? Sports, Nollywood, low poverty, hip hop, science? Where? ![]() |

The north was won by PDP if i'm not mistaken, the mobilisation should be done in the south-west where PDP didn't do anything.
