It was a shocking sight yesterday as men of the Kwara State Police Command paraded a goat as an armed robbery suspect.

The goat "robbery suspect"The goat "suspect" is being detained over an alleged attempt to snatch a Mazda car. The mysterious goat, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tunde Mohammed, while briefing bewildered journalists at the Force headquarters, is an armed robber who attempted to snatch the said car, Wednesday night, and later transformed into the goat in a bid to escape arrest.

He explained that men of a vigilance group in Anifowose Ipata/Oloje areas of the state capital had chased two armed robbery suspects who wanted to demobilise the Mazda car with the intention of stealing it, and

"while one of them escaped, the other was about to be apprehended by the team when he turned his back on the wall and turned to this goat. They quickly grabbed the goat and here it is.’’ Mohammed said.

The police spokesman said the goat "armed robbery suspect" will not be left off the hook until investigations into the case are concluded.

He also said that no fewer than five stolen vehicles have been recovered by the state Police Command while some suspects were also arrested. Among those arrested, he said was one Idowu Oni of Araromi area of Akure who escaped from Akure Prison.

He added that the escaped convict was arrested in Ilorin after stealing a Mazda 323 car belonging to Mrs. Henrietta Ayijesu.

He also said another armed robbery and rape suspect was in their custody, assuring that the suspects will soon appear in court.

Probably, the goat will end up in someone's belly when the 'investigations into the case are concluded.'

In the Ibibio culture, the man can claim the child, only if he pays a collosal fine to the girl's family. Na true you write@jarus. Lagos is regarded as 2nd America to some people. My mom told me of a woman in my village who lodged in a hotel in Lagos during the Better Life for Rural Women programe. The woman came back and nacked my mother of her wonderful experiences in a hotel in Lagos. She was simply overwhelmed and impressed by the experience. So tay, she was nicknamed her "Mma Dekos". ;

But as for me, growing up in Calabar and later on in the village, I was also intrigued with visiting Lagos, I no go lie. In high school, one guy sef, who lived in neighboring village used to lie that he lives in Lagos. But when I visited Lagos in 91, (first time since coming home from America), I was not that impressed. My brother was just showing me the scenery of the environment on the trip, and then mockingly say, those in the village get so carried away when they tell people that their daughters are in Lagos. No, I was not impressed, till today, I probably wont want to live there if I move back home.

MEN of Imo State Police Command have arrested one Mrs. Chioma Nwachukwu, a student of Imo State University, Owerri, for allegedly stealing a two-day-old baby said to be the child of one Mrs. Nkechi Nwaogu of Akpodim, Mbaise in Ezinihitte, Mbaise Local Council.

Parading the suspect before journalists at the Police Command Headquarters in Owerri at the weekend, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, said the accused, said to have wedded last December, had been attending ante-natal at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri.
Mrs. Nwachukwu, a 400 level Optometry student of IMSU, according to Nwaiwu, had five-month-old twin pregnancy when it abruptly got miscarried which made her to look for alternative to please her husband said to have been expectant.
He disclosed that the suspect had exchanged GSM phone numbers with her colleague, which she used in tracing Nworgu to her home on January 12, 2009, when she was delivered of a baby. Nworgu was said to have been delivered of baby girl on January 11, 2009.
Pretending to be thirsty of water, Mrs. Nwachukwu urged her victim to give her some water to drink. As soon as she went in to bring the water, Mrs. Nwachukwu, who was admiring the baby girl, disappeared with the baby.
Efforts to recover the child proved abortive but the culprit was said to have been arrested when she went to another nursing mother, apparently to steal another baby to complete her twins earlier diagnosed so as to satisfy her father-in-law and husband.
She was arrested by a team of police officers.
The suspect later confessed to committing the crime, but Nwaiwu noted that the Imo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Innocent Ilozuoke, had ordered full-scale investigation, adding that the law would take its course in the crime.
He was surprised that a 400 level student of a reputable university could allegedly commit such a crime.

I had this discussion with my brother, and he is for capitalism, because it fosters competition between companies, so that only the best can survive. True, but the schism between the rich and the poor in the world is as a result of capitalism. I think greed is the cause (and I saw something like that in the media) of capitalism. It was not practised in the olden days, and our grandparents survived by living simple lives. Now, we want to live in the grandest apartment, drive the best cars, wear designers clothes . . . What is the end result of it? Probably emptiness.

While we have different destinies in life, I would never ever advise anybody with a good job in Nigeria to abandon it, in search of greener pastures. Not worth it. For the most part, when you move abroad, you will do menial job to begin with, before ascending to plum jobs, which are now harder to get, with the economic malaise in America. No, dont do it, what else do you want in life, if you are already comfortable back home? I might come off as an individual who is 'trying to put sand in your garri,' but, honestly, abroad is not rosy as it is generally potrayed in the media. The nice thing about it is that the social services are reliable.

Margin trading isn't the same as what was described on this thread, ordinary individuals borrowing money from banks to invest in the stock market. At the height of the boom, would your retail banks in the US lend you money to trade stocks? You can always open an online brokerage account and make whatever gambles you want , but you can't borrow from your banks for the same purpose.

I am telling you that during the dotcom boom, it was still possible to borrow money from the bank and invest in stocks. You might not necessarily tell them of your intentions to do so, but then again, even if you were approved for a loan, and you had a collateral, tell me, what would compell them to withdraw your loan request at the 11th hour?

Timothy Geithner paid most of the past-due taxes days before Obama announced his choice in November, according to materials released by the Senate Finance Committee. He had paid the remainder of the taxes in 2006, after the IRS sent him a bill.

The still-unpaid taxes were discovered by Obama's transition team while investigating Geithner's background. Obama's staff told senators about the tax issues Dec. 5.

Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus said he still hoped Geithner could be confirmed on Inauguration Day.

"These errors were not intentional; they were honest mistakes," Baucus said after he and other committee members met with Geithner behind closed doors on Tuesday.

Republican senators, who might be expected to raise the most significant objections, did not immediately comment.

After senators met with Geithner, the panel released 30 pages of documents detailing his tax errors — and also how he came to employ a housekeeper whose legal immigrant work status had briefly lapsed in 2005.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid dismissed the events as "a few little hiccups," and said he was "not concerned at all" about the impact.

Obama reiterated his support.

"He's dedicated his career to our country and served with honor, intelligence and distinction," incoming White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. "That service should not be tarnished by honest mistakes, which, upon learning of them, he quickly addressed."

Geithner, plucked from his job as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York to serve as Obama's treasury secretary, told transition officials and senators that he didn't know he owed self-employment taxes when he worked for the International Monetary Fund.

He failed to pay self-employment taxes for money he earned while working for IMF from 2001 to 2003, according to materials released by the Senate committee. In 2006, the IRS notified him that he owed $14,847 in self-employment taxes and $2,383 in interest from 2003 and 2004, which he paid after an audit. The IRS waived penalties for those tax years.

Transition officials discovered last fall that Geithner also had not paid the taxes in 2001 or 2002. He paid $25,970 in back taxes and interest for those years several days before Obama announced his choice, the committee documents showed.

Geithner and his supporters have said his mistake was a common one for people hired by international organizations that don't pay the employer share of Social Security taxes. Geithner told Obama's team and senators that an accountant had reviewed his tax returns after Geithner prepared them and didn't discover the problem.

But some tax experts said the problem is not that common.

Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of tax for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, said it would be difficult for someone preparing a tax return for a self-employed person to skip the Social Security and Medicare tax lines.

"It's such a basic mistake that I kind of wonder if we know all the facts," Ochsenschlager said of Geithner's situation.

Geithner also said he didn't realize a housekeeper he paid in 2004 and 2005 did not have current employment documentation as an immigrant for the final three months she worked for him, the documents indicated.

The committee's records do not show how or when senators learned about the expiration of the housekeeper's work status. The committee reported that Geithner failed to get an I-9 form verifying legal work status for three people he employed as household help since 2004, instead jotting citizenship dates, passport numbers and relevant work status information into an address book.

One housekeeper's legal authorization to work in the United States expired on July 15, 2005 and the person continued to work for the Geithners until October of that year, the report says.

Democratic senators lined up Tuesday to offer their support for Geithner.

"Tim came to the committee, admitted he had made some mistakes, and was very contrite," New York Sen. Charles E. Schumer said in a statement. "In my opinion, these mistakes were not at all disqualifying."

Geithner is the second Obama Cabinet choice to face controversy. New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson withdrew his name on Jan. 4 as Obama's commerce secretary after questions surfaced about a federal investigation concerning contributions and a state contract.

Geithner's tax problem was at least the second time such a situation has touched an Obama appointee. Nancy Killefer, the management consultant selected last week to become the new administration's chief performance officer, failed to pay unemployment compensation taxes, apparently on household employees. In 2005, the District of Columbia placed a $946.69 tax lien on her home over the unpaid taxes. Over a year and a half, she had failed to pay $298 in taxes plus the rest in interest and penalties, and she cleared up the debt within a few months.

Ridiculous. Is the writer trying to come off as sarcastic, or are they well-intentioned? If so, let him move to some of these war torn countries to witness first hand experience on the brutality the citizens have to endure on a daily basis.

The principal rule about investing in stocks is don't invest more than you can afford to lose. How can people be investing a huge chunk of their savings or even borrowing money to invest? Even by the purportedly lax lending standards in the West, I'll be astonished if a bank lent an ordinary individual money to invest in the market.
Like any bubble, once every Tom,privates and Harry is interested in investing, you should know the market is peaking. I believe it was   Rockefeller that said he knew trouble was brewing when his shoe shiner started talking about investing in the stock market and he took the prescient decision to get out before the 1929 crash.

It's a learning process, the pain caused by the losses will teach Nigerians about the downside risks and help check future bubbles . . . .  . until the next lot of suckers.

It's very risky, and a lot of people got burned in the process. I contemplated, and almost borrowed money to invest in stocks that I read would increase in value, but a former roommate cautioned me. It was a humbling experience for me.

I think in one way or another, you have all said it all. Il just like to add that:

First,Naija is my beloved land. I love her to bits and I'm proud to be a Nigeria. However, some people have continuosly made sure that the land is not habitable for a lot of Naijas. I must say here that one thing I have found on this thread is the 'unfortunate' idea that succes is equal to having stupendous wealth. Thats is an idea we must perish from our thoughts for our Nation to move forward.

If you want to relocate abroad, I must tell you that its not as easy as people make it seem it is, however, it is easier to be comfortable here than back home. You can work (even the odd jobs that some people are quick to condemn) and feed yourself and your family. The thing back home is we want to work little and make great pay. Thats why we are never satisfied with our jobs. However, I must warn you to be cautious. Maybe what you should do is to, if youre married, go alone and see what lies ahead while your wife/husband remains in Naija. If you like what you see, then you can come back for them if not, stay back home.

The other thing is, make sure you are doing what makes you happy. I had 2 offers from a bank and a consulting firm back home but for me, my dream is in Engineering and providing solutions to Engineering problems. I could have stayed back and made the money, but where will the fulfillment be? This is my second year here now and I'm already on my PhD. I'm sponsored by the same government that a lot of people here have accused of being racist. Well thank God for my own case. But things are exactly the way you view them. I choose to be more positive in my thinking and it has helped. So be focused and understand what gives you joy and fulfilment. When you do that, please go anywhere to realise that dream, even if its Ghana!

On a final note, may I say that no matter where you find yourself, even if na Naija we dey, let us remember that Naija does not belong to a set of thieves and rogues, Naija belongs to us all. Once in a while, when you can, go back home and give a little bit of something. Free services in a hospital, digging a borehole in a village, etc. Little things like that which wont cost you more than 40/50 - 100 pounds will go a long way in saving lives. I'm working on a project back home, if you are interested, please PM me. Naija needs us now more than ever. We owe it to our children and children's children.

Yes, the downturn in the stockmarket has affected me seriously.  I had stock worth about N7.8Million as at Dec 2007.  I gave this stock as collateral and obtained a loan of N5 million from Diamondbank PLC. From Jan 2008 till date I have paid interest worth over 1million to Diamond bank.  And the stock I bought with the 5 million naira is worth just about N 2million while the stock I gave as collateral is now worth about 3.8million.  The Diamondbank is on my neck to pay up the money, I am confuse I do not know what to do.  Meanwhile Diamondbank charge is really weighing me down and very unreasonable. This month they will charge me N78,0000 the next month they ask me to pay N103,000.00.  I am really disturbed

What are the repercussions if you dont pay off your debt to diamond bank?

My brother you talk true. I still think a lot of Nigerians back home are not being honest to us living abroad. A Nigerian man especially Igbos which I am can have 2 billion Naira in his account with 2 or more houses be crying that he has no money and his kids are starving. I was in Enugu and Onitha just this December, come and see mansions people are building everywhere, talk less of cars. I mean brand new cars from the factory.

Living abroad has been so overhyped and is seen as living in Utopia. That's far from the truth. I think people are beginning to realize the truth about living abroad. I think my services would be more beneficial/needed back home than abroad.

I totally agree with you, I just came back from Nigeria a few day ago and the rate at which that country is developing amazes me. Right now I have my family members looking at different business's I can invest in, I'm so sick of living in the States. A record number of Nigerian went home from Dallas this year so it's starting to look like Nigeria is not as bad as some people will make it.

I seriously envy so many people in Nigeria  take my little sister that just went back to Nigeria last year, now she works in a freaking bank, drives a new car she paid cash for, has two maids, a driver, lives in a 3 bedroom flat, with a gate man. Tell me how many people in America can enjoy that kind of luxury.

I certainly agree with you on that. My take is that Nigeria is an up and coming country, and it's left for us who live abroad to garner as much experiences as we have here and contribute it back home. For me, I am not interested in lavish living, as long as I am comfortable, and can offer something back to the community, I am fine with it. Life was great in Nigeria for me, you don't need a lot of money to be happy.

We all have different destinies in life. In the long run, it's left to the individual to decide which works best for them. Personally, if I am to choose between living in Nigeria, and abroad, I will definitely choose Nigeria. I dunno, maybe, because of past memories of my dear country. Abroad, it's work, work, work, pay bills, isolation from people, and all what not. There is no sense of community here, except individualism. Not my cup of tea, but there are advantages living here. Still, I wont advise anybody who is earning a comfortable living to move to America permanently.

If we were sinless, then Jesus Christ would not have died for us. As Kobojunkie said, we should aspire to be sinless, which means, submitting your life to God in all endeavor and striving to Obey Him.
