Interesting. @the poster, thanks for sharing. |
Does the same treatment apply to men also, I mean, the culture of shaving one's head in the event of one's spouse's death. If not, that is another double standard practice. My misgivings with such customs is that it dictates how a woman should mourn for the husband. It shouldnt be that way. One should be at liberty to grieve in whatever manner that they choose to do so. |
shaving one's hair is not the only way to mourn for the demise of one's spouse. There are other ways. |
I am glad to be a Nigerian and I wont trade my nationality for any other nation in this world. |
Down with archaic tradition that diminishes our persona and shackles our mindset. |
Take back their daughter? Cant women make their own independent decision, without being bounced from place to place to place, like a football? |
Very interesting. |
Spouse. |
Not a big deal for a woman to combine her maiden name with her husband's last name. My mom did so, and I am referring to a couple who got married decades ago. @Jigoo. Good answer. A woman can own properties, but she needs to tell her husband. Without doing so, means trust is lacking in the marriage. Moreoever, any man who embarks on the acquisition of property without consulting his wife is also disrespecting her. |
Not tasteful. |
I wonder@redish. I read earlier that some of those students were orphaned, so parents being in the picture is a surprise to me. Let them do their kids a favor by withdrawing them from the school. I lived in boarding school for 6 years, and did not have the luxuries that the students are enjoying. What did they expect? To be pampered and coddled by Oprah. Goes to show you that some humans are ungrateful. Let them pack out to local schools, so they will be given access to see their parents |
@mamaput, land ownership for women is a very controversial issue. As you may realize, we live in a paternalistic society, that bequeaths inheritance to the surviving male child, because of the belief that women would inherit their husband's property. In addition to this, some husbands sometimes feel that their position as the head of the household is threatened, and would veto their wife's decision to buy a land. So, women go behind their husband's back to buy land. Sometimes (and I have read it in the papers), such transactions are conducted secretly, for fear of a backlash from hubby and unscrupulous landowners, noticing the desperation of their buyers could swindle them. For all men on this board, how would you feel if the house that you are living in, was financed100 % by your wife? Would you feel threatened, or would you not care? Remember, talk is cheap!!! |
@mandi, read my discourse again, I wrote that pimples, most times disappear with age, not all times. |
I liked Okpewho's other novel, "The victims". The author was sucessful in not only showcasing the pitfalls of polygamy, but his grammar was also impressive. I was not aware that his other novel (neither have I read it), "The Last Duty" is a classic. One of Africa's finest writer. http://www.binghamton.edu/africana/okpewho.html |
The issue of women, unable to buy property in Nigeria may still be common, but dont forget that it was also common place in the USA. Women were denied loans to purchase a house, unless they were married. I read that in Ebony magazine. As of today, I am not aware of such trends occuring in Nigeria. My mother owned plots of land in my hometown, and yeah, it was purchased under her name. |
benzyl peroxide dries your face. Stay away from it. |
I miss yam porridge a lot. Dang, I even try it out here with potatoes and spinach. The flavor comes close, though to Yam porridge, but just cant compete with it overall. The one that I like especially is when there is dried fish in the yam porridge. |
What's up with all this bragging on this board? Like who really cares if you ate chocolates everyday, or not? Bragging on a, mostly faceless webboard? Childish!!! |
@the poster, pimples most times disappears with age, so dont stress over it. Moreso, stay away from drugs, that claim to provide a cure, for some of them have been linked to depression. Also, stay away from alcohol based astringent, for it will dry your face. I think they are just a waste of money, including the famous ten o-six. Drink lots of water, eat lots of salad, greens and all that stuff, for it clears the system and the effect may show on your face. |
Ungrateful bunch of people. If they dont like the school, let them pack out. That's the school rule, minimized visiting days for students, to cut the number of loittering on campus. This goes to show you that some humans would always complain, no matter what. |
Very funny answer@asoderock |
Culled this from a website associated with Christianity. http://www.gotquestions.org/search.php?zoom_sort=0&zoom_query=Forbidden+fruit |
Tlops, good one, that's why I stated that there are certain events that occur in the Holy Bible that may defy human reasoning, but nothing puzzles God. Who are we in the first place to question God's motives in our life? His Will is Supreme!!! |
I listen to music, while driving. Is it a sin? |
Just shows you the mindset of some people back home. |
How time flies! In the mid to late 80's, he was a guest columnist for Newswatch magazine and I read a few of his column. Liked them. Was a teenager then, and just celebrated my birthday few days ago. Time waits for no man. |
God is All-Knowing@Backsider. |
Well, lets put it this way, God still provided a way of Redemption to us, through the Death of Jesus Christ on the Cross. So, we, who were once estranged from Him, have now been reconciled to Him, because of Jesus Christ. So, my advice, lets look at the bright spot, pray for Humility and Thank God for His Grace of Salvation, Amen. |
A year is usually the norm in my culture. |
Who are we to question the motives of the Almighty God? |
