Politics › Oduah Won't Respond To Certificate Forgery Allegations, Aide Says by nduchucks(op): 10:02am On Jan 09, 2014
Aviation Minister Stella Oduah will not respond to allegations that she listed in her resume an academic qualification that she might not have obtained, an aide said yesterday.

Ms. Oduah is being accused of falsely claiming to have a Master's Degree in Business Administration from a U.S. college, because the college says it never offered that course.

Attempts by Daily Trust to speak with the minister's office on Tuesday failed as her aides did not answer calls or respond to text messages.

Yesterday, a spokesman for aviation parastatals, Mr. Yakubu Dati, who also speaks for the minister, told the BBC Hausa radio that they have decided not to respond to the accusations against Ms. Oduah.

He did not give reasons for that.

Online portal, Sahara Reporters, on Monday quoted authorities at St. Paul's College, where Ms. Oduah claimed she studied for Bachelor's and Master's Degrees, as saying they did not award an MBA at any time as the university does not even have a graduate school or programme.

On Tuesday, Premium Times said it observed an attempt by the minister's aides to revise her profiles on the web to clean up any reference to St. Paul's College in her bios.

Oduah had recently been enmeshed in the bulletproof cars purchase scandal, over which the House of Representatives has demanded her sack.

She told Daily Trust over a week ago that the armoured cars were leased and not purchased.

For people like me, who are sitting on the fence on this issue, this decision by Stella Oduah has pushed us to the side of believing the allegation against her. It is very simple to simply set the record straight by providing the name of the institution which conferred a MBA degree on her, while publicly condemning Sahara Reporters and her many enemies. There is only one reason why Oduah is unable to do just that. Go figure. SMH

DerideGull: Are you trying very hard to tell me you have not heard about a twenty (20) old graduate of 4-year university program? Nigeria is in a serious socio-political problem if the cross section of its cream of crop articulate in this manner you did. Some kids already earned Ph.D at 26 in USA.

Today’s Nigerian high school students seemed to be lazy and heavily distracted. In the 70s and earlier 80s, academically endowed Nigerian students cleared their GCE papers before taking WAEC. In fact, students whose parents were loaded, like Stella Oduah, had already left the shores of cesspit called Nigeria before the month of May rolls around.

By the way, have you not heard that Stella Oduah is a high school droupout? grin grin grin
Aren't you guys smart enough to know what damage control means, other than editing content on wikipedia and facebook profile pages? If Stella Oduah is one of those exceptionally brilliant students, why have you all not simply come clean by telling the public that she completed her education within 3-3.5years and publicizing the names of the institutions she attended?

The silence makes Sahara's report seem accurate.

DerideGull: Only a bloody fool shall assume or conclude that the statement of “she immediately stayed back to study for her Masters Degree which she achieved in 1983” meant she stayed back at St. Paul’s College Lawrenceville, Virginia, USA.

In fact, I would have given the statement a second thought if it reads ““she immediately enrolled to study for her Masters Degree which she achieved in 1983”. This statement would have brought the essence of school or college to my mind.
Mr. Gull,

I need your help in clarifying one or two issues. Stella Oduah graduated from Zixton Grammer School, in the Anambra State town of Ozubulu in Nza village, in 1978, when she was approx. 16 years old. Then she went to school in the USA from 1978 - 1982.

We know that the earliest high school graduation would occur in May of any year. Assuming that Stella left for the USA immediately after she graduated, then she must have completed her studies, at the latest, December 1978.

So Mr. Gull, this means that Stella obtained both a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree within 3 - 3.5 years. My problem is, I do not think this is possible. Would you please try to explain this to me? Thank you. Dalu o.

DerideGull: Most Nigerians should not have been created by God. The same group of moronic dingbats that wanted Stella Oduah linked to the BMW car scandal injected the plank that she obtained BA and MBA from St. Paul’s College Lawrenceville, Virginia, United States of America. I must state unequivocally that most goofy airheads that tend to castigate Stella Oduah have not seen her academic credentials.
Some of us are willing to give Stella the benefit of the doubt, but I must confess that things are not looking very good. She was in the US for exactly 4 years and left with a master's degree. This remarkable achievement means that she completed her studies in record time. My question is, why did she not highlight such a significant achievement in her CV huh

@Shymexx: Rumours are not helpful these days. Gamawa ko, Agama lizard ni.

DerideGull: Please do not fall into the imbecilic cracks most Nigerians seemed to call home. Every 4 year college in USA is very challenging however certain curricula are not more challenging than others. There is nothing such as “non challenging 4 year college” in USA. With brain and resources, 4 year program could be easily completed in 3 years including the summer schools.

Why should it be Oduah’s problem if people do not know the institution that conferred MBA degree on her? The issue can only perturb the weary-eyed bigots who are ethnically egocentric
Mr. Gull, what are you on about. Sadly there are many non competitive 4 year colleges in the USA and they are non challenging. I'm sorry to say that many historically black 4 year colleges, with the exception of a few, fall in that category. This has nothing to do with race but funding.

shymexx: Thesis should be yank's version of dissertation/project, right? I don't think I've seen a MSc. degree without dissertation/project. Social sciences, arts, hospitality et al do dissertation for MSc., while core science courses do projects. In the UK, MSc. takes 3 semesters - however, it's done within a year. The normal 2 academic semesters and the long summer break, which is used for dissertation/project.
Yes, thesis is yank's version of dissertation. Master of Science degrees are offered with the non-Thesis Option. Even Harvard offers some non-dissertation Master Of Science degrees in Engineering and Applied Science. Source

Anyway, let's focus on the woman and how she managed to get BSc. and MSc. degrees within 4 years. Thought MSc. takes 2years in America and BSc. is about 4 years. I stand to be corrected.
It is very possible to obtain a bachelors degree in 3 years, particularly from a non challenging 4 year college, by taking heavy course loads each semester and attending summer school. It is equally possible to obtain a non thesis Master's degree in 1 year, once again, by taking heavy course loads and attending summer school.

By the way, some colleges offer Master's degree programs. The trouble with Oduah is that, we are not yet sure which institution conferred a MBA degree on her.

Politics › Igbo Leaders Reject Okurounmu National Conference Panel’s Report by nduchucks(op): 8:27am On Jan 07, 2014
A major crisis of confidence has hit the planned National Conference, following yesterday’s insistence of Igbo leaders on a new constitution.

Unless the Prof. Ben Nwabueze-led Igbo leaders of thought are persuaded, a credibility crisis is imminent for the conference, which is likely to begin before the end of March.

The Igbo leaders of thought, after yesterday’s meeting in Enugu, rejected the proposal of the Presidential Advisory Committee, led by Senator Femi Okuroumu, which recommended the amendment of the constitution. They are also opposed to the proposed selection of delegates on the basis of senatorial zones or federal constituencies.

The Igbo leaders, at the end of their third meeting, also gave an indication that they had initiated an action aimed at reconciling the various factions in the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, that the Igbo should not be divided at the conference, they said.

The meeting was attended by prominent Igbo elders, including, Senator Anyim Ude, President-General of Ohanaeze, Chief Enwo Igariwey, Archbishop Maxwell Anikwenwa, Dr Okwesilieze Nwodo, Senator Offia Nwali, Dr Chu Okongwu, Chief Ben Obumselu, Dr Dozie Ikedife, Mrs Maria Okwor, Chief Enechi Onyia (SAN), Mr. Chris Okoye, Elliot Uko and Igwe Aja Nwachukwu, among others.

The secretary of the group and former Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Prof Elochukwu Amucheazi, told reporters that the Igbo position on the conference would be made public by the end of this month.

He said they were totally opposed to any recommendation that would have anything to do with the retention of any aspect of the 1999 Constitution. Only a new constitution would be acceptable to Nigerians, he said.

Amucheazi said the position of the Igbo leaders is that the conference should be for all ethnic nationalities, being the only way the people would be carried along in the process.

“The advisory council seems to be thinking of the amendment of the constitution and we met to see how to inform the president that this is not in order because we are thinking of an entirely new constitution. What we are saying is that we must have a way of informing the president and Nigerians that the recommendation is not in order and in trying to do this, you can see this is the meeting of Concerned Igbo Leaders of Thought and we are bringing in Ohanaeze to have a reconciliation in two weeks time because we want Ndigbo to be united in this.

“We want this country to survive and we are doing all in our power to make it survive. We are working out the content of the constitution and when we are through with it, we are going to invite all Igbo groups to have a say on it.

“In other words, Ndigbo have rejected the recommendation of PAC. If this is a conference of all nationalities, all ethnic nationalities should be represented. What we are saying is that if we are using the geo-political zones, we must make sure that all ethnic units are represented.

“Again, it is not delegates through adult suffrage by individuals on their own merit but that the ethnic nationalities will have a way of nominating people to it. So we are dealing with nationalities and this is an issue that seem to be misunderstood. We want ethnic nationalities and not senatorial zones,” he said.

The Igbo leaders also demanded that the new constitution should not pass through the National Assembly but should be subjected to a referendum.

The leadership crisis rocking Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Amucheazi said, will be sorted out at their next meeting on January 18.

Source
I suppose these leaders are just now understanding why many believe that this National Conference is not a "Sovereign" National Conference. NASS must rubberstamp its outcome for any of its recommendation to become law. This so-called National Conference can only recommend items for inclusion in the ongoing constitutional amendment process. Period. Its a toothless and useless conference.

Who will dissolve NASS and make this conference, sovereign? We know with 100% certainty that it will not be our current President.

If in a few days, we do not see the leaked resume, or hear from the Senate, I'll be willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. I will not believe this story until I have concrete evidence of the following:

Her resume, which she presented to the Senate as a ministerial nominee in 2011, indicated she obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) from St. Paul’s College Lawrenceville, Virginia, United States.
Where is this resume which was presented to the Senate? On the other hand, if this lady indeed falsify her credentials, she would have disappointed many of her fans, who I'm sure will continue to defend her even if the story is confirmed to be true.

It is nonsense to say that our rail system was ambandoned because there was no demand for a railway by Nigerians.

Politics › Aganga, Ngama Join Race For CBN Governor's Job by nduchucks(op): 3:50am On Jan 06, 2014
Successor may be named earlier than expected

By Steve Omanufeme

Serving Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, and the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Yerima Ngama, have joined the list of contenders for the job of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), a position which will be vacant when Sanusi Lamido steps down possibly in March when he proceeds on terminal leave, according to sources close to the presidency.

THISDAY gathered that both men are being tipped for the job because of their performance in the trade and investment and finance ministries, as well as their respective backgrounds in investment and commercial banking.

Aganga, who has the confidence of President Goodluck Jonathan, is also currently being adjudged as probably the best minister in the trade and industry portfolio in years.

Another thing going for him is the fact that he bestrides the two geopolitical zones of the South-south and South-west, more so as both the South-east and North have successively produced Professor Chukwuma Soludo and Sanusi as central bank governors.

Aganga, though originally from Edo State, was born and bred in Lagos, and represents the state as well as the South-west zone in the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Ngama, on the other hand, is from Yobe State and would bring to the job extensive experience as a commercial banker and regulator, having worked for many Nigerian banks and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

With Aganga and Ngama’s emergence for the CBN job, they will be joining the list of other contenders for the high profile post.

THISDAY had in October 2013 exclusively reported that six persons were in line for the job including the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), Mr. Mustafa Chike-Obi; the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Access Bank Plc, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede; and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, First Bank of Nigeria Limited (FBN), Mr. Bisi Onasanya.

Others on the list are the three deputy governors of the CBN who are considered insiders and who share similar views with Sanusi on monetary policies. They are Dr. Kingsley Moghalu, Mr. Tunde Lemo and Dr. Sarah Alade, who analysts say will ensure monetary policy continuity.

However, THISDAY further gathered that Sanusi’s departure has created divisions within the CBN as camps loyal to the three deputy governors have emerged.

The internal politicking by the deputy governors, THISDAY was informed by CBN sources, is quite fierce, with each of them reaching out to politicians and friends of the president in their bid to replace Sanusi.

Also, a source in CBN said his early departure, possibly in March, would mean that his successor would be announced much earlier than expected.
Sanusi’s tenure is expected to end in June this year, but he would be proceeding on terminal leave by March.

Born Olusegun Olutoyin Aganga in 1955, he was first nominated by Jonathan as Minister of Finance in April 2010. In July 2011, Aganga was redeployed by the president to the Ministry of Trade and Investment, to make way for Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to return as the Minister of Finance.

He was educated at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria where he obtained a B.Sc Degree in Biological Sciences in 1977 and the University of Oxford, United Kingdom, where he obtained a degree in Theology in 2000 just like the outgoing governor who has a diploma in Islamic studies. He is also a Chartered Accountant.

Aganga previously worked in Arthur Young in Nigeria, Ernst & Young in London UK, and Goldman Sachs International in London, where he was Managing Director, Hedge Funds.

As finance minister, one of his key accomplishments was the establishment of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), better known as the Sovereign Wealth Fund (SWF).

His only drawback is his not being so well acquainted with the banking industry in Nigeria, which he is also expected to oversee.

Ngama’s professional experience, however, covers several banks at top executive management positions ranging from First Bank Nigeria Limited, Diamond Bank Plc and Victory Merchant Bank. He also worked in NDIC where he was the head of Bank Analysis Unit, Off-site Supervision Department.

He was appointed Minister of State for Finance by Jonathan in July 2011.
Born in 1961, Ngama obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Maiduguri and Masters of Science in Accountancy from the University of Glasgow in Scotland, United Kingdom.

He also obtained a second Masters' degree and Ph.D in Money & Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, where he received the coveted Ashley Prize award for producing the best thesis in his faculty.

In addition to his academic qualifications, Ngama has significant training in Islamic Banking and Islamic Capital Market Products.

Whoever emerges Sanusi’s eventual successor will be the 11th central bank governor in Nigeria.

As specified in the CBN Act 2007, the central bank governor’s principal remit is to provide economic advice to the federal government, while acting as the official banker to the government of the federation.

Apart from signing every currency denomination, the governor among other duties, oversees the country’s banking sector. Alongside the Monetary Policy Committee of the CBN, the governor also determines the monetary policies of the country, which have an impact on the financial system and the macro-economy.

Aganga is grossly unqualified for the job.

This is the real issue. Unfortunately, Nigerians know that such a reasonable action will not be forthcoming from the President. This is a great opportunity for him to show real leadership, but I'm afraid he will fail us again.

Those who still have a capacity to grieve in this country must remember Langalanga. It was a sight of a horrific carnage in the seventies. In 1970, a passenger train carrying large number of people derailed, crashed and fell into a canyon at Langa Langa, Benue, Nigeriain, killing 80 - 300 people according to various reports. Langa Langa has a difficult terrain so when the coaches rammed into one another, rescue was really hard. To compound matters, the trailer carrying the wounded to the hospital also crashed killing the remaining survivors. It was a trope of monumental and frightful absurdity, a metaphor for looming state failure.

The train conveying many students (most of them schooling in Keffi) was heading for Enugu. It is believed that the train left Zaria. Some of the passengers stopped in Gudi. Next to Gudi is Langa Langa; then it happened!

The cause of the accident range from Drunkenness of the train driver, excessive speeding, and e.t.c - No one really knows what caused the accident.

Since this tragedy, Nigerian appetite for travelling by rail reduced significantly and subsequent governments basically abandoned our rail system until OBJ started the revival process, which GEJ is taking to its completion.

I urge folks not to politicize issues arround our rail transportation system and to remember the hundreds of people who paid with their lives in the Langa Langa tragedy.

Lets support GEJ in his effort to complete the revival process, but watch his agents like a hawk to reduce looting which has become the order of the day.
