I'd be curious to find out what would come out of a "Nairaland Sovereign National Conference" -   A mock SNC where internet warriors would discuss in detail, topics that they deem fit for inclusion in the agenda of the real conference.

My bet will be placed on the woeful failure of such a conference. I hope forumites can prove me wrong!

My initial contribution to the conference would be as follows:

(1) Scrap the federal character nonsense.

(2) Any citizen who takes up permanent residence in any state for a period of 6 months automatically becomes an indegene of that state.

(3)Elementary education will be mandatory, with jail terms for parents who do not send their children to school.

(4)Allocation of federal revenues to states will be tied to revenues generated by the states themselves.
(for example; if according to revenue sharing formular a state's share is N1billion per quarter, the state only gets 50% of that; additional funds will be in the form of matching funds -  thus the state gets additional N500m only if she generates an equal amount of revenue from tourism, taxes, or any other means.

(5)Each state should be responsible for its own police force.

(6)20year jail term with hard labor for anyone caught romanticizing the breakup of the country.

(7)Erect 2 national monuments for the fallen heros of the civil war; one in Enugu and the other in Kaduna.

make i stop for now. i hope say people get sense of humour wey enable dem to smile after reading number 6.  we no fit hide from ourselves, when nigeria dey play soccer match na him una dey sabi say we be one. every single one of you people get worked up when watching the eagles play.  na because of de nigerian in you people.

We are the envy of all Africans, we shine for good and bad all over the world, WE ARE NIGERIANS. The greatest people on earth!

Do we have any leader(s) that can organize this conference in a specially moderated thread?  we go see whether people na empty barrels making noise dey here, or whether dem fit pull this ting off.

P.S. You'd be surprised how many senators and reps are nairalanders.  smiley

No, no!
It won't have anything to do with politicians or parties. It will be a grassroots thing, with the people choosing those who will truely represent their interests.
The only problematic bit might be, the mode of choosing the representatives. It will need to be above board (maybe the methods employed for MKO's election could be used).
Don't make me laugh, my brother. SNC a grassroots thing in Nigeria?  most people dey hungry you want make dem organize grassroots operation.

But why is that? Why can not there be a peaceful break-up if some groups want it? What is the point of keeping Nigeria one at all cost? Can we know do a show of hands? Who wants to remain in Nigeria? who wants to opt-out? I strongly believe that all options must be on the table. I am not advocating for the break-up of Nigeria because I believe in Nigeria and its uniqueness but I believe that if some groups want to opt-out, then that option should be there if the discussions at the SNC do not go their way. After all, Czechoslovakiaroke up peacefully.
A peaceful breakup of Nigeria is impractical. The people who have real power in Nigeria (so-called owners of Nigeria), who are from North, South, East, and West, will never agree to give up that power peacefully. They'll rather fight another war.   Anyone that does not understand this is truly ignorant.

The best we could hope for is to take our country back piecemeal.  These owners of Nigeria are also counting on the fact that those of you who can oppose them will never unite because of tribalism.  These owners are winning - just read the posts in this section.

Any meaninful discussion must include all options. We must start from do scratch. The 1st question must be - Do we want to live together? If yes how? and on what terms? Only then can we experience sincere progress.
A SNC will not happen anytime soon as long as people insist on including discussions on breaking up the country.  It may be better to start with discussing how to live together peacefully and with equal justice for all.  We've already fought a war to keep Nigeria one.

The smart thing to do, in my view, is to negotiate, rather than try to dictate a suicidal agenda.

I know you have often alluded to being from the North, so I will ask this question. Don't you think Nigeria would have been better off, if the Northern elites had pursued programmes of educating their people? I am of the opinion that the Northern elites have held their people back so that they can use them to do their bidding.

I am not tribal-bashing here; just asking what your thoughts are on this.
The most marginalized people in nigeria are the commoners of the Niger Delta area and the Almanjiris of the North. The leaders who are responsible for the said disgraceful marginalization are from the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western part of Nigeria.  The earlier we realized that most of the current crop of leaders we have in Nigeria including Governors, Ministers, LG officials are nothing but thieves, the better off we'll be.

I cannot completely disagree with your postulation.

I wonder whether Nigerians of the eastern extraction could be open to the idea of a "Sovereign National Conference" where serious issues could be ironed out, but a conference which excludes any discussion of breaking up the country?  I believe progressives in the North are quite open to the idea of federalism and we could discuss how to accomplish "true" federalism in such a conference.

Millions of lives were lost during the civil war to keep nigeria one,  and anyone that believes that Nigeria will breakup peacefully this time, should think again.

make i go come.

I don't know whether the next President of Southern Origin will come from the South East as there is also South South to contend with. But I do know that it will surely not come from SouthWest as you guys have already had your own 8years with Obasanjo.

so the next time Fashola might make it to the Presidency is probably 2047
de point wey i dey try make una see be say, if de said agreement go remain, all political parties go produce candidates from south, pdp fit produce south south candidate, ac fit produce south west candidate, while apga fit produce south east candidate and so on.

after dat, na fight to finish to determine who go win. nobody go automatically give una president from south east.  i believe say north, fit even rally around person like goodluck in 2015 sef.  soludo don already dine with de devil, so no show for soludo.

personally, i no care whether na fashola, a south eaterner, south southerner, or a northerner become president  for 2015, as long as de person dey qualified and fit for office. tribe no matter to me.

if dat happen people go make noise and  troops go silence dem in de name of national security and protecting de constitution - and another northerner go emerge as president in 3 months.

After the way some have behaved over this "our turn" issue (witness the disgrace in PDP Katsina), its time to put a nail in the coffin of rotation. Let the best man rule us, if Jonathan takes over and turns out to be good, why should he not continue beyond 2011?

Is it good governance or "turn by turn" that will develop the country and put meals on our tables?
on dis point, i completely agree with you. as a practical matter however, i no tink say all de political parties wey make de agreement go change am. south don get their own 8 years under obj, so north go demand their own 8 years.

We need John Nash(the maths professor of games theory portrayed in the movie the beautiful mind) to come and solve the present political equation. How I wish TB Joshua will seeinto our future! We are not sure that Yar'Adua will finish his tenure. It is only providence that will see him thru.Surely Nigerians will be the greatest foolish people to have ever inhibited this planet to elect him for a second tenure if he survives this one.If he eventually serves out his tenure, another president of Northern origin will emerge and that will be dangerous for Ndi Igbo.If he is strong he will perpetuate himself for eight years as the norm of 2nd tenure in democratic nations for consolidation of his policies. that is one premise. If Yar'Adua resigns,Goodluck takes over and,[/quote]methinks, if yar'adua resigns or his office becomes vacant otherwise, goodluck will have to become president, na de ting wey constitution call for be dat.  if dat one happen, i tink say goodluck ebele jonathan, go announce say, him accept de constitutional duty reluctantly, and him no go run for office come 2011.  dat go enable dem to field another northerner wey go complete de second term.

1. Sanusi's ability and competence

Indeed, the jury is still out with respect to Sanusi's ability and competence.

many of de people wey dey complain about sanusi lost money because of the gross mismanagement of de thieving ceos and their cohorts.

those victims of fraud, mismanagement, and outright theft, dey look for anyone to blame and sanusi be their favorite person to blame.

de victims go tell us say sanusi dey kill de banking industry. Nothing could be farther from de truth. de fired ceos killed many banks long before sanusi enter scene.

people need to understand say, if you hide dead body for inside bedroom for long, nobody go know say dead body dey for ya house.  na when honest authority expose de dead body wey people go see say dead body don die and don rot for a very long time.

in fact, some relatives and other people wey get intimate relationship with de dead body,  go begin blame both the owner of de house, and de person wey find de dead body.

na de ting wey dey happen now be dat. for my analogy, na sanusi be de authority wey find dead body and de sacked ceos, incompetent and possibly thieving executives wey kill person and hide de body for bedroom.

to make matters worse, as sanusi dey carry dead body go for proper burial,  dead body come get accident for road.  now na double wahala for dead body and de owner of dead body. make we thank Allah for de talent of fela anikulapo kuti (rip).

Amidst growing confusion on the true state of health of President Umaru Yar’Adua, state governors held an emergency meeting on Thursday night in Abuja ahead of today’s National Economic Council conference at the Presidential Villa.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who was one of the 20 governors and two deputy governors in attendance, told journalists that the discussion on Thursday was a “one-agenda meeting.”

But the governors rejected the proposal to consider Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan as an Acting President in Yar’Adua’s absence in line with section 145 of the constitution.

Instead, the governors decided after about three hours to express support for Yar’Adua’s presidency, even while he is still indisposed.
