Typical Naija advice to women if table were turned around. So shocked I havent seen this advice on this particular thread.

You don't need a huge capital to buy fgn bonds (not fgn savings bond)as earlier suggested.

Here's what I got back from stanbic.

Dear Sir,

We would like to thank you for your interest in Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers Limited (‘’Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers”). Please find below a brief introduction to our organization.

Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers Limited (SISL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stanbic IBTC Holding Plc., and a member of The Standard Bank Group, set up to provide world class stockbroking services to local as well as foreign investors in the Nigerian Capital Market. We are currently the largest stockbroking house in Nigeria with a market share of 19.38% of the value of shares traded on the floor of the Nigerian Stock Exchange based on 2018 trading results. We have also successfully acted as the stockbroker to major primary market transactions in Nigeria.

SISL is also an approved Market Maker of a basket of listed equities on The Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Government Stockbroker to Federal Government Bonds. We are currently promoting Retail Bond trading on floors of The NSE.

A stockbroking account will be opened once you fill all the relevant forms and provide the supporting documents. Please note that the minimum amount required to open a Stock broking account with us is N5million (five million naira) which can be a cheque, transfer of shares already resident with other stock broking firms or a combination of the two. Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers would then act as stockbroker, the agent on the Exchange, to deal in the stocks selected by the investor while the minimum amount to open a stockbroking account with us for the purpose of FGN bond is N100,000

.

We also offer an on-line dealing service, which enables clients view account details and would also be able to provide e-mail confirmations whenever transactions are executed. With our robust software, you are guaranteed on-line access to your account, which would facilitate easier placing of orders, monitoring of account and review of transaction history.

The under listed items are required to accompany the Completed Individual Account Opening Form:

Means of Identification (National ID card, Permanent Voters card, International Passport or a valid Driver’s license)- the original ID should be sighted at any of our bank branch near you or notarized by a notary public if you reside outside the country.
Passport Photograph
Proof of Address (Copy of a recent utility bill in your name) – the original utility bill should be sighted at any of our bank branch near you or notarized by a notary public if you reside outside the country.
Completed copy of the attached DCS form

Please find below bond quote for the available FGN bond as requested.

They called that 100k a fee. When u are done with account opening, another story of minimum amount to buy bond will come up. Ask them if u can buy bond with that N100k.

Kindly confirm if it's Stanbic ibtc stockbrokers you meant. I just started the account opening process. The opening deposit is 5m. But I want to be sure they can buy FGN bonds and not stock.
[Aquote author=needful post=84217147]

Use stanbic brokers if u wanna do FG bond and u can create the account online. Right now, they have 2yrs secondary market Fg bond and 3yrs.

Goodluck.

Yes go for the account strictly for bond. The account opening fee for that one is 100,000 but the minimum to buy the bond is 20m. The 5m is for stocks, so u have to indicate what u want. Their brokerage fee is also good and cheaper than others(0.0007%).

Very good, you paid N20 million because you bought from the secondary market.

You will need about N100 million to buy FGN bond from the primary market.

With a minimum of $2500 you can also invest in the Eurobond fund of FBN Quest Merchant Bank @ 6%.

You are sure of the preservation of your fund from currency devaluation

You are right sir. Since I invested more than 20m, my average yearly coupon payment will be between 4.5 to 5m and I planned converting them back to dollars to add to my dollar investment. I have been doing it with TB until this crash and I also have zenith and gtb stock. U adviced me about this sometime ago and I followed your advice and bought those shares.
Thank you for your selfless advice. Unfortunately, its a faceless forum

God will multiply your blessings in 1trillion.

I have a few questions;

1. How do you calculate the yield on bonds. Here you quoted 16.39% coupon and yield of 12.06. What does that mean?

2. Are your interests based on 16.39% or 12.06%?

3. After investing when do you start receiving coupon payments.

4. Do you need to open an account to invest in bonds?

From the explanation given to me, my interest is based on 16.39% and its paid twice per yr. Yes u need to open account for it, the lower the yield, the better profit you make. I am not into bond, this is my first time. By the time I get the coupon payment, everything will be clearer.

When you think it couldn’t get worse now another ridiculous assumption. Someone few days ago was very happy about the fake news from punch that individuals are barred from buying treasury bills because according to him profits from treasury bills are ‘free money’.

Some of us who invest in treasury bills live abroad and you think we are unpatriotic and greedy by lending to our home country to build infrastructures. You think everybody has time to run a business or even knows how to run a business in a risky environment such as Nigeria. The money we lend to government in treasury bills is put into building of infrastructures that employ many Nigerians. You see building of infrastructures from treasury bills funds creates jobs. Indirectly we are creating jobs. Those folks who earn money working in infrastructural projects funded by treasury bills and bonds in turn put that money back into the economy. So treasury bills investors are not unpatriotic and we are not greedy because our country and many of our fellow citizens are benefiting from our investments.

Another point is that I will never put my money into any business in Nigeria while I reside abroad. Even if treasury bills rate goes to 0.00001%, I will never put my hard earned money into any business in Nigeria. Until our govt. in Nigeria creates a friendly business environment, I will be glad to leave my funds in savings account in the country of my residence than to lose them trying to invest in risky businesses back home.

U nailed it. If Emefiele want, let him reduce the rate to 1%, I will happily accept it. Confused government.
