This is not the place to discuss this but Olu and Oba are actually drawn from the Yoruba's proto-semitic origin. Olu - El Oba - Abba Olu in Yoruba meaning "posessor". Oba in Yoruba meaning "ruler". |
<Quote> PhysicsHD: @ Yoruba speakers, could you explain something to me How can "Olueko of Eko" be the traditional Yoruba title of the Oba of Lagos if he has a unique title for his throne? a) Doesn't "Olueko" (Eleko) literally mean king/ruler of Eko? In that case, "Olueko of Eko" would mean King of Eko of Eko? Well if it is indeed Eleko of Eko (which still means ruler of eko of eko), then he does not have a unique title for his throne. It would seem that exotik was right. There is nothing unique about the Oba of Lagos's title because it literally means ruler of Eko (Lagos). This is no different than the Oba of Benin meaning the king of Benin or the Olu of Warri meaning the king of Warri. I don't think that Olueko or Eleko is a unique title. b) What is the difference between Olu and Oba as far as speakers of the Yoruba language are concerned? </quote> Physics, There has only been one Eleko in our history in Lagos : Prince Esikpa of the Bini royal house - said to be of Eweka lineage - (I don't know the different lineages in the Bini palace. Esikpa was a titular prince but not the crown prince, direct heir to the Bini throne. His son, Addo (sometimes spelt Ado) was the first Oba of Lagos. All the rulers ever since have been Oba, exept twice, in 1749 when Erelu Kekere sat and ruled from the throne pending decision of the kingmakers to coronate her son, Oba Olorogun kutere in 1750. The other occassion was in 2003 when Erelu Kuti sat and ruled from the throne between the death of Oba Oyekan II and the coronation of present King, Oba Akiolu I. I ought to mention that we have had three titles, the first and only one being Eleko; Erelu is a female ruler and has been used twice and will be used again when needed in future. Erelu has to be a high princess from any of the ruling houses of the royal lineage. Oba of Lagos is the customary title for the King. The first Bini dynasty in Lagos ended with Oba Akinsemoyin in 1704. The second dynasty started with Akinsemoyin's sister, Princess Kuti (who became Erelu and ascended the throne in 1749 after her brother's death). She was married to High Priest Asipa, an Ijesa man who was priest to Oba Akinsemoyin. Their offspring Olorogun Kutere asended the thrne a year later and through him came the successive Kings. |
Iya Ngbali and others, I corrected Maasoap already. Let it rest please. Maasoap, Mohammed is not the only prophet of Islam. Jesus is too. Mohammed was a messenger of Islam and brought the revelation. |
@OP, Fashola is doing what government of Lagos has always done. Lagos State Government is centralized in Lagos City Hall, which though is not the seat of Governor, has always been the nerve center of Lagos metropolis, even back to the time of the Mayor of Lagos. The Lagos Metro include the mainland suburbs. The plannning of Lagos and urban expansion took an accelerated turn in 60s and rapidly continued until maybe mid 90s and attention was shifted back to developing and renewing the Islands. Surulere and all the road and bridge networks as well as housing projects, Tejuosho, Ikeja, OJo, Yaba, Apapa - Oshodi trunk road, numerous housing projects in Isolo, Akowonjo, Ipaja, Alimosho, etc. However, the population overwhelm the infrastructural build-out and worse, the people are reluctant to do simple civic duties of maintaining and sustaining the neighborhoods and environment so many of what we condenm as eye sores are actually beauutiful structures that just need people to self-direct in the upkeep and beuatifying of their communities. As far as health, lagos had a public health system with impressive health centers, staffed and well operated until, again the popuation swell overwelmed it. Lagos should stop developing and expanding out. The governors in other states should builkd and expand their home states and encourage their citizens looking for these amenities to stay home instead of going to Lagos to seek better quality of living. Fashola's action is not miguided, its a good policy to stir the consceince of his peers to take responsibility in their home states and relief their citizens of homelessness and suffering in Lagos. |
Since you have a timeline, I think you should seek a woman in her readiness for matrimony. Start with a profile listing your values and aspirations. Mention accomplishments. Reserve the most specific and intimate part so you have some element of mystery to encourage curiosity from admirers. There are plenty women in here past the marriage threshold, hopefully you will find a good match to live a promising and prosperous life with. Good luck! |
Lol@alhj. , . . Igbos are conceited. |
Where is the poster that said "GEJ used us and dumped us" ? Now you see the political rewards. He is paying Igbos back for supporting his election. |
<Quote> maasoap: @Nekezi, Mohammed was a prophet and a warrior who protected his life, followers and religion with all he had and not a one like your coward Jesus who was killed like a chicken. </quote> Maasoap, I know the arguments of who is right and who is wrong can get very emotionally hot but please do not allow other's comments to lead you to blasphemy. Ok? Jesus is also a prophet of Islam. Do not use any such bad word in connection with his name or his mother's. If it gets that hot you need to vent you are better off calling the poster names, ugly names, than addressing Jesus (PBUH) like that. |
<Quote> bashdecash: @poster, salam brother. 1st, u didnt define boko haram correctly, BOKO means western education or fake education.</quote> Of everything inspiring in that letter you worry yourself with definition? I'm sure someone will soon come up and say the punctuations are wrong. Lmao!! I read people saying we have religious problem in Nigeria and as well tribalism. I'm adding a third one to the list - "miseducation"! |
@OP, A woman just lost her life few days ago to an abuser. It happens everyday, lives are lost to spousal abuse. Are you brave enough to use reverse psychology on him? Wake up one morning and just sit on the edge of bed and begin sobbing. If he ask what's wrong, tell him you are tired and you want to die. That takes control out of his hand. So he will respond by now trying to regain control in the opposite direction - keep you alive! |
First, there is disparity in the understanding and usage of terms. The statutes used by UN and its agencies are compositions and wordings of a selection of countries, none of which is in Africa. So the term "terrorism" for instance. It is not a universally defined and applicable law. Gangsters on American streets are terrorists but no war is declared on them. Drug lords in Mexico are terrorists but no international coalition is put together to rescue innocent civilians killed daily in their sweep. So what is genocide? Does its meaning have universal understanding and is every country equally liable on the human rights criteria attached to it? Are the scrutiny of a genocidal atrocity the same in Africa as it is in Asia, Europe, North and South America and Australia? . . . . And are there any sacred cows that are exccused from ICC prosecutuion because the genocide is deemed a domestic issue and outside UN jurisdiction? The process of law need to be reviewed and amended to give fairness and judicial protection to minorities that are unqualified to protect and demand fair justice without an external sponsorship. |
