Irrespective of the provocation the joke may have elicited, I condemn Will Smith's reaction 100%.
Big ups to the maturity of Chris Rock. Mehn, this dude really rocks. I really can tell how I would have reacted had we swapped places.
Finally, people should learn to stop being overly sensitive when comedians and compères do their job. Every joke MUST be on something or someone or some place. No joke exists without involving a noun.
Pray tell, why should a fat person take offence when a joke has been made about fat people when he just finished bringing the roof down with laughter after a skinny people joke was told. Beats me, seriously.

Never show that you are angry at your place of work.
Always ensure you remain calm regardless of how you feel or who you think is at fault.
If you can't address a grievance with an even temper, postpone it for when you are more in control of your emotions.
Lastly, from your narrative, I find you to be primarily at fault. If only you had done your due diligence, you would have identified the lacking requirements before embarking on the task. In summary, you set your self up - never act from pressure but by principle.
