Politics › Another Petrol Tanker Crashes In Lagos by nerodenero(op): 9:18am On Jan 10, 2014
Another tanker laden with 33,000 litres of petrol fell in the Iju area of Lagos State on Thursday, spilling some of its contents on the road.

The incident came barely 24 hours after a petrol tanker crashed into passenger buses in the Kirikiri area of the state, killing at least 15 people.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the truck, belonging to Conoil, with number plate, XB467AKN, also hit an electric pole along Ajuwon Road. It was learnt that no life was lost in the incident.

Fire fighters from Agege Fire Station, as well as technical staff of Power Holding Company of Nigeria and policemen prevented vehicles from plying the road while the incident lasted. Around 8am, the remaining fuel in the vehicle was transferred into another tanker.

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, told our correspondent that the tanker fell around 2.21am.

He said, “Around 2.21am, another fuel tanker laden with 33,000 litres of petrol fell close to the entrance of Grain Movement premises. There was heavy spillage of fuel, but we were able to prevent a fire.”

Meanwhile, many escaped death after a room on the premises of the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Staff Hospital, Onike, Yaba, was gutted by fire.

An employee at the hospital, who declined to identify himself, told PUNCH Metro that only equipment were destroyed in the fire.

He said, “Around 10am, we saw fire from the secretary’s office on the first floor. So we evacuated all the patients, while other employees ran outside. There was no one in the affected office when the fire started, so there were no casualties.”

Fadipe explained that the fire started after an employee turned off the generator and switched over to public power supply.

Fadipe said the fire spread to the medical director’s office, but the timely intervention of his agency prevented the entire building from being gutted by the inferno.

“The fire was said to have emanated from a stabiliser in the secretary office after they switched back to electricity. It then spread to the medical director’s office, but we were able to contain it,” Fadipe said.

In a related development, relatives of victims of the tanker explosion which occurred at Suya Bus Stop, Kirikiri, Lagos came looking for the bodies of their loved ones at Gbagada General Hospital on Thursday.

Some of the relatives, who had yet to find the bodies of their loved ones, told PUNCH Metro that they had gone to some mortuaries in the state, including the one at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

One of them said his brother, who was coming to pay him a visit in his shop on Tuesday, was one of the passengers of the commercial bus that was behind the tanker that exploded.

He said, “I was on the telephone with him, and he told me he was almost at Berger Bus Stop, as we were speaking, I heard a loud bang. I have been trying to locate which hospital they took him to.”

Other victims’ relatives told our correspondent that they had yet to identify their members, as most of the remains were burnt beyond recognition.

One of them said, “ I do not even know if my sister’s body is here or not. What we know is that we cannot identify them, I have been to LASUTH, and they told us to come here. We are also checking some general hospitals to see if I can identify her.”

However, a source at the hospital told one of our correspondents that many of the injured victims brought to the hospital were referred to other hospitals due to lack of bed spaces.

The doctor at the burns unit of the hospital said those that were admitted were in critical conditions.

He said since most of the bodies of the victims were charred, the management of the mortuaries where the corpses were taken to might need to conduct further identification procedures.

“We are not sure if a DNA examination will be needed to identify those that suffered 100 per cent burns. But I will advise relations to visit mortuaries around the state where they would be asked to complete some identification forms and also fill the necessary requirements need to claim the bodies,” he said.

Also, PUNCH Metro learnt that the state government had started an assessment test on the buildings that were affected by the Wednesday’s inferno.

Officials told our correspondent that the most affected building, Sterling Bank, located at Berger Suya Bus Stop, might be demolished along with other shops depending on the outcome of the test.

The President, Berger Business Community, Mr. Okey Udeagba, said the state government had ordered all the traders to evacuate.

He said, “But we cannot sit back at home and do nothing, so we worked partially today and we will continue to work. However, the Lagos State Government issued a circular instructing everybody to evacuate.

“None of our members died in the fire and those that sustained injuries are recovering. We are, however, looking for the owner of the truck that caused the fire. If he is someone that is buoyant or has insurance, he will have to compensate the traders.”

If the man does it when the wife is indispose, then, he is probably one of the best dads around. It goes to show that the new dad was well trained by his own dad/Mum. He must have been shown a lot of love, hence, the reason he is reciprocating.

I read through the prophecies and I am surprised the Prophet didn't talk about Boko Haram.
My Questions are:
1. Was it that the Prophet was only concerned about Jonathan and his cabinet, PDP and APC?
2. Was he afraid to talk about Boko Haram for fear of being bombed by the group?
3. If he hears from God, why would God be silent about a dreaded group that has claimed the lives of innocent Nigerians irrespective of tribe and religion?
Infact, our expectations as Nigerians are beyond measure. Since the Prophet no go fit answer my questions now, I just package myself, run comot to save my lean megabyte.

Sports › Nigeria favoured for CHAN title by nerodenero(op): 2:07pm On Jan 09, 2014
JOHANNESBURG (AFP) – Debutants Nigeria appear the strongest of the 16 contenders for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) which kicks off in Cape Town this weekend.

Although ranked only third in Group A because they failed to qualify for two previous editions of a competition for home-based footballers, they should advance with hosts South Africa.

Nigeria are seeking a second African national team title in South Africa within 13 months having won the more prestigious Cup of Nations last February.

The architect of that success, coach and former national team captain Stephen Keshi, is back with four of his 2013 Confederations Cup squad.

Goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim and defenders Francis Benjamin, Azubuike Egwuekwe and Solomon Kwambe went to Brazil, and striker Ejike Uzoenyi was part of the Nations Cup-winning squad.

Another goalkeeper, Dele Alampasu, helped the national junior team defeat Mexico last October to capture the world title in the United Arab Emirates.

But fellow gold medalist, striker Kelechi Iheanacho, was omitted after leaving the training camp for unsuccessful trials with English Premier League giants Manchester City.

Midfielder Sunday Mba, match-winner in the 1-0 Cup of Nations final triumph over Burkina Faso, is another absentee having recently joined French club Ajaccio.

Expectations of another trophy remain high in the most populous African country, though, which concerns Keshi given he had little time to create his squad.

“It is not possible to build a team for a major championship in three weeks — not even Fabio Capello or Arsene Wenger can do that,” he told reporters.

“However, I know the boys are physically and mentally prepared for what lies ahead and are ready to make Nigerians proud.”

South Africa are equally confident they can conquer Africa for the first time since winning the 1996 Cup of Nations with coach Gordon Igesund stressing the importance of home advantage.

“Nothing is more inspiring to a footballer than having a packed stadium behind him. We face tough opposition, but I am looking forward to winning the tournament.”

Igesund must do without the stars of 2013 CAF Champions League runners-up Orlando Pirates because of a domestic fixture backlog.

But the experience of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala and striker Bernard Parker should ensure they go far.

A Mali team boasting star goalkeeper Soumaila Diakite and a Mozambique side including veteran defender Dario Khan complete the Group A line-up.

Morocco can call on seven of the Raja Casablanca team that defied the odds to reach the Club World Cup final in Marrakech last month before succumbing to Bayern Munich.

That could give the team that eliminated title holders Tunisia in a qualifier the edge over Group B rivals Burkina Faso, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Although Ghana have been criticised by coach Maxwell Konadu, they remain Group C favourites with Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia and Libya likely to fight for the other quarter-finals slot.

It is anticipated that Democratic Republic of Congo, winners of the maiden CHAN tournament five years ago in Ivory Coast, will justify being the top Group D seeds.

Gabon look set to join them in the knockout phase given the inexperience of Burundi and Mauritania, who are making their CAF senior national team tournament debuts.

The organisers have not disclosed ticket sales, but the 20,000-plus average crowds of the Cup of Nations last year are unlikely to be matched given the lack of big names.

Mba and DR Congo playmaker Tresor Mputu were flagged as potential stars, but both miss out with the latter axed after criticising the treatment of the national squad.

Officials will hope for a goal glut with matches in Ivory Coast and Sudan two years later averaging less than two per fixture and 1-0 the most frequent result.

But Gabonese Daniel Cousin, the former Rangers and Hull City striker, and others will not find scoring easy given the impressive line-up of goalkeepers.

Apart from Agbim, Diakite and Khune, Nadir Lamyaghri of Morocco and Robert Kidiaba of DR Congo are top-class shot-stoppers.

Politics › EXPOSED: How Nigerian Presidents Loot Oil Revenue Through NNPC by nerodenero(op): 10:48am On Jan 09, 2014
NEWS EXPRESS – The lid was this morning lifted on one of Nigeria’s best kept secrets: How the country’s successive presidents spend crude oil revenues at will and without accounting to anyone.

A former insider at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja said that all it takes for a sitting President to get any amount he wants from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is to summon the corporation’s Group Managing Director (GMD) and ask him to go and bring the needed sum.

According to Olusegun Adeniyi, who functioned as Special Adviser on Communications to late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, “If there is crisis in any state of the federation and there is need to mobilize resources for security agencies, the next thing you hear from whoever is the president of Nigeria is ‘call me the GMD’. If a leader of one of the ECOWAS countries visited and was genuflecting before our president about how rough things were for his country (and may be later behind closed doors, for himself), the instant instruction would be, ‘call me the GMD’. And I am aware that for several years (may be even now), the activities of the military Joint Task Force (JTF) were solely funded by the NNPC.”

Mr. Adeniyi, who made the disclosure in ‘The Verdict’, his weekly column in ThisDay newspaper, said that “the problem of the NNPC predates President Jonathan though most critical observers believe that things have in recent time gone haywire.”

As he sees it, “Given such a situation, how would the Federation Account that is essentially dependent on oil revenues but is jointly owned by the federal government, states and local governments balance?”

Just maybe the accident or should I say calamity that befalls the masses would have reduced if there is alternative to road being rail. The tension on our roads is just too much, the reason why there is accident at all times. I think rail construction is long overdue. The Government should look in this direction and safe us from this untold tragedies.

They are both Nollywood actors and they have set the pace for the upcoming actors and actresses in the industry. The couple has shown that you can be a career person and at the same time keep your home. Olu Jacobs and Joke Silva grew in acting together, and look at each other like partners not rivals. They are unarguably the oldest couple in Nollywood today. They have been married for almost 30years yet their love is still strong! During Joke Silva’s 50th birthday celebration in 2011, the couple renewed their marital vows and Joke was in tears!

They need to marry for the right reasons and not for selfish reasons. I see it as a curse for the new generation of celebrities as they hardly enjoy the marriage institution.
