FashionRe: African Fashion Week London 2012 by newacca: 1:35pm On Aug 13, 2012
ijebabe: African Fashion Week London entered its second year on 3-4 of August and was the idea of Nigerian entrepreneur – Ronke Ademiluyi. ‘My aim is to create more visibility for African designers and to create a one-stop shop for the public. We were expecting 500 people last year and almost 5000 turned up. It was something people had clearly been waiting for.’

This year, AFWL showcased 60 designers including Nigeria’s Adebayo Jones, known for his lavish evening and bridal wear. ‘As I was inspired by Yves Saint Laurent, I hope my participation will inspire young designers, he says. The best African designers balance global seasonal trends with an intelligent reimagining of indigenous fabrics and adornments.

Nigerian designer – Amaka Osakwe’s label, Maki Oh turns indigenous textiles into sensual pieces that evolve traditional dress practises. She launched in 2010 and her latest collection focuses on body-conscious silhouettes made from adire. ‘I want to make Nigerians aware of their own fabrics, which are infused with meanings that have been passed down through generations.’

Jeffrey Kimathi uses fibres of the baobab tree for his Jamhuri Wear luggage range. Ghana’s Aisha Obuobi launched Christie Brown in 2008 and has become Accra’s womenswear with detailing such as covered buttons, feathers and fringing. ‘My work is about the beauty of simplicity.

Celebrities like Kelis was spotted in a piece from Lisa Folawiyo’s label – Jewel by Lisa. Solange Knowles is a fan of Maki Oh and Michelle Obama is regularly seen wearing pieces by London-based Nigerian designer Duro Olowu.

The African fashion industry still faces challenges. There’s a lack of formal fashion education, which means there are problems from pattern-cutting and styling to marketing and PR. There’s no continent-wide body to promote funding and poor infrastructure slows production and raises costs. Olowu is optimistic. ‘The customer must have desire for the products on their own merit and only then will they ask: “Oh, where was this made?”’ he says. ‘There are a lot of talented African designers showing potential and that’s why the fashion world is looking very hard at Africa right now.’

I am sorry for discussing this subject on the LITERATURE/WRITING thread. I have searched everywhere on this forum and I cannot find any thread for Arts and Craft. Though Fashion,Culture,Entertainment,Culinary and writing are kinds of arts;yet I am not satisfied that the main source of Art is not gaining any attention on this forum and I have not seen any new thread for Art on its own.
In my own opinion,I believe ARTS&CRAFT should have its own thread to create more awareness and attention for contemporary African art.
I have a thought that Art is life and I have gained more followers in my school of thought on this view. They agree with me that there is more to art than drawing,painting,printing,carving etc. Art tells stories of human,nature,animals and society. Art identifies the challenges of our world and through art comes the solutions. Art preaches peace and unite the world irrespective of race,background,culture and history. Art is a source of life. Art is life.
Everybody is gifted! I hereby challenge inspiring Nigerian talents to come out and showcase the beauty of African arts and culture. I want utilize this medium to showcase some of my works,though I am not a trained Artist. I grew up to have natural flair for Art. I started from drawing Aeroplanes,Comics,Tree in my early stage of life and I continued a while when I finished my secondary school education but I deviated into other career while getting into the higher institution,no regret though.
Each and everyday of my life,something in me would not let me rest. Art keeps coming to mind like someone is punching hard on my head. I got no alternative than to submit to nature. I am calling on my African talents that share same dream to come and let's unite to live our dreams.
Let us discuss issues on
*Fine Art: Drawing,Painting,Sculpture,Printing,Cartoon,Comics etc

*Decorative Art

* Visual Art

* Applied Art etc

I will attach a copy of some drawings I made some years back. I am looking forward to suggestions,criticism and commendations.

@ernestleon,
Thank you so much for your quick response. I am really very sorry for bothering you with all my questions,I need to be sure of some things and get some of it fixed before she leaves.
The school requested her to get the Certificate of enrollment stamped by the Italian embassy in Lagos. The embassy has already issued visa,returned certificate of enrollment,but no special stamp on the certificate of enrollment. While I contacted the school,the school made me to understand that she needs stamped certificate of enrollment to be able to apply for study permit on arriving Italy. Do this happen? how do we go about it? This Italian consulate are not organized at alllll!
Please come to my aid brova.

TravelRe: Travelling To Canada Part 3 by newacca: 9:31pm On Aug 04, 2012
Don Cipher: Hello house please i need ur candid advice here, i was refused on 30th July after 3mths processing with the following reasons:
1. You have not satisfied me that u have adequate funds available to u to pay for your tuition and living expenses while in Canada and return to your country of residence.

2. You have not satisfied me that you will leave Canada by the end of the period authorized for your stay.

Other reasons, handwritten, sponsors not credible.

My tuition for a year costs $8518.5 including admin fees for a year @ UNB. i used 2 different sponsors, one was a company acct (Godfather) with a turn over of about 39m within 8mths with closing balance 3.5m also cert of incorporation and tax clearance included(with a letter indicating funding of $12,000 annually equivalent of N1,920,000) the other was my brother in-law's savings acct with 2.5m closing balance (included marriage cert). Graduated 2008 B.Sc Comp Sci, NIIT 2008 Oracle OCA & OCP KarROX Ethical Hacker 2011, working for over 3yrs but didn't include my personal statement.

This is what i feel, i have requested for a new acceptance letter, @ the moment i have N1.2M in my savings account which has been there for the past 2mths and i want to try to build it up to about N3.4M within the next 5wks (which i intend leaving throughout the processing period) before i apply again for Jan 2013. Would the visa officer see that as cash lodgement.

I also intend getting another sponsor who owns a company but this time i wish to include his personal acct instead of only company account like i did previously, but how to prove my relationship to the sponsor is my headache right now.

I would have used my boss who happened to be my lecturer in school(We have known since March 2004), but his company has issues with tax clearance. Is it possible to use his personal account with him introducing himself as Managing Consultant of the company i work for without CDHC requesting for his tax certs because it is already in record that i work for his company.

Finally, what is the minimum account balance required by CDHC
@Don cipher,
sorry about the refusal,but yet you need to take your time and work on why you were refused. After spotting the facts,you can then file ur application again.
Meanwhile,from my own perspective,I think I can spot some of d reasons u were refused.
You said you have been working for 3yrs+ and you did not include your own personal statement of acct. To the VO,it means over the year,you have not been able to save up any money. So you rely on ur "godfather" to finance ur studies abroad from his company account of 3.5m balance? When ur sponsor himself is married with children I assumed. If I were to be the VO,I will also say,what makes you think your brother-in law will be willing to part away with substantial amount from his 2.5m acct balance for an inlaw who has been working for 3yrs+,when he himself has his immediate family,especially in Nigeria's sitaution and scenario?
I think if you can "systematically" build your own acct as you have suggested,and you are able to prove the source of the fund within this time,you may have some points.
In my own opinion,getting another sponsor may raise suspicion. If you could plead with ur main sponsor, if he could pad up his acct or even if he has reasonable amount in his personal acct you could use provided it's a bit higher than the balance in d company's acct(I think VOs prefer personal accts to company acct.since withdrawals could be made easily without any delay or consultation),while you also include your acct and how you came about the fund in your acct,you may come back better. Trust me bro,it takes creativity,smartness and determination. Above all,Faith.
good luck.

@henrywest,
what'z up? longest time.
