It boils down to the perception of society of the various professions. Even parents, family and friends give preference to those studying medcine. Technically, the wards of the rich are the ones who have the wherewithal in terms of education, resources and connections to secure admissions into medical schools. Imagine a son negotiating salaries with a father? You can guess the outcome. The question is, is that the practice and standard the world over?
