So we finally broke ground on this project, on November 3. We just poured a strip foundation since this was dry land, and by the next day, were able to start putting up some blocks. The inside floor is going to get filled in much later, because there are some things that we're planning to place under the floor like batteries and plumbing. We're using 6" solid blocks to maximize available space on such a tight floorplan.

Thanks! I wonder how well it holds up to show

Pls where did you get this flooring? What's it called and how much is it (per sq ft/meter).
Does it hold up well to foot traffic? I've been looking for alternatives to tiles for a project... Thanks

Let's keep deceiving ourselves then. You'll tell me if those countries you mentioned are in the same economic plight as us.
All I'm saying is if all we see about New York in Western media are the good parts, then why complain when we show only the good parts of Lagos in our media? If you want to be fair, demand, and publish the bad parts of the Western world too. Nobody denies we are not in the same league, but to constantly insist we should show the bad is not good for morale.

On the other hand, by showing the good, you encourage us, and visitors, to see the country in more balanced light...

Op you're hilarious. You post edited pictures and you want our views about Nigeria to change.

Why don't you go to the south south and take pictures of oil spills? Or to the north to show us how BH have ravaged that area.

showing us silly pictures like Nigerians are not suffering in those areas. Show the pictures to your American friends if you have, not to us Nigerians.

Like the silly pictures will salvage our economic situation.
Abeg. I hardly see pictures of the bad parts of UK, US, or France... all I see are the wonderful buildings and boulevards with people sipping coffee or tea or walking hand in hand all smiles. Why are you demanding that we only show bad parts of our country? Those people in those countries also realize they have bad parts, yet they choose to show only the best parts. Don't accuse OP of following the international standard of promoting one's country.

It is becoming a respectable country, with small steps like this. Now they know then can be shut down if they don't register. NAFDAC should also just hire some of our Igbo boys from China to translate for them, that way there won't be any chance of miscommunication.

not at all. Direct opposite. World oil prices does not translate to domestic prices. World oil prices mainly affects govt revenue and if govt revenue are affected it simply means subsidy removal and if subsidy is removed it simply means higher domestic fuel prices.
Wow yes you're right. Didn't think of it from that perspective. So this is actually very good that in spite of the fall in revenue, petrol prices have reduced. Nice

Obiwannn:
How many persons in Nigeria can boast of 700k in Nigeria a year in savings?don't Forget that this is just his first job.
We're not comparing him to other wage earners in Nigeria. We're comparing whether a person who got green card is better off than a person getting 20million and staying in Nigeria.

I was just showing how you'd have to work for and save 700k over 28 years to save 20million, and all you'll have to show for it is old age. A person with 20million can transform his life by business. A person with green card will grow old working hard for others and never really transform their life.

20million today, well utilized, will yield so much more than a green card, well utilized.

Does it matter where the copper rod is mounted? Must it be on the roof, or can it be mounted on a long pole close to the building?

Well, it can be on a long pole close to your house... if you don't mind lightning ignoring the pole and hitting your house.

Seriously, your house - with all the metal in and around it - is a great magnet for lightning, and you don't want to take chances
Business › Re: N20million Or Green Card: Which Would You Prefer? by nextstep(m):
sleek82:
Well somany might see no sense in this but i still would say it anyway. I currently live in canada with a green card and i work $23/hr and 40hrs a week, pls do the maths and calc how much i earn in a month....mind you, this is my first job and i am just 4mnths old in Canada. Somany would pick 20mill and think they would start a biz with it....yeah it makes sense, only that 20mill might not sustain you for a long time and dont forget that theres no extra income to care for your needs, which means you probably would be practically living on the profits made from the biz you are starting and who says the biz will even boom?....remember you have families too that would not let you rest from the fact that they heard that you just received 20mill ooo. As i am, i can travel to any country i so like....any country!
But just analysing the two things, i think the green card is better cos it would give you the opportunity to make a good living both for you and your immediate family and you can make a living that would save you 20mill at the long run but on the other hand, 20mill will almost never give you a green card even if you get successful at the long run. This is just ma opinion sha ooo
But if you're like most Nigerians who are successful within Nigeria, you don't need a green card to provide for your family. In fact, it's those people I admire: they have successful businesses; mansions in Nigeria AND in the US/UK; can travel as they like; and send their children abroad to study. Very very few green card holders can do any of that; most are just barely surviving. Which leads me to do the math, as you say.

$23/hour * 2000hours/year translates to $46000 anually. Let's break it down (roughly):

Tax rate in Canada on the first $45,000 is about 16%, leaving (46000 - 46000*16%) = $39000
Housing is about 1400, give or take, depending on if you have dependents, and adding heating+electric+internet+cable, leaving (39000-1400*12) = 22200
Food is about 500, transport 200 (600 if you loan a car), clothing, cell phone, etc. can become another $1500/month, leaving (22000-1500*12) = $4200

$4200CAD is about #700,000NGN

These numbers may not reflect your reality, but I'd be impressed if you managed to save more than 700k per year in Canada. If you did, you'll need to save for almost 28 years. Don't forget you're also going to pay sales tax on your car, clothing, phone, in short most things, so you'll end up with less than this.

With 20million today, hah, my life will change.

Celebrities › Re: I Know I Will Never See My Country Like This- Paul Okoye by nextstep(m): 4:31pm On Oct 07, 2015
Well Paul, maybe you can spend some of that money on developing your home town. Here's some examples of what you can do instead of spending your hard earned money on foreign cars, buying houses in foreign lands, buying products made abroad, and instagramming your new shoes - which all go directly to feed the families of oyinbos and pays sales taxes to their governments:

- sponsor or build a secondary school and make it the best in the country, hire and train the best teachers and pay them well, charge reduced tuition
- sponsor or build a decent hospital and make it the best in the country; doesn't have to be huge or world class, and you can also charge slightly reduced fees
- start a company doing anything: shoes, soap, garri, ice cream, washing machines, solar street lights, toothpick, plastic cups, ceramic plates
- spend that fancy lekki money on helping to develop your home community instead: help provide potable water and drainage
- invest in 20-50 young aspiring entrepreneurs. Give them #200-500k in exchange for a 25% stake and watch how they would transform your community and build wealth

These are not hard things and you can happily emblazon your name on it, and people far and wide would admire how well the "Paul Okoye Community Hospital" runs, or how successful the students from "Paul Okoye Secondary School" become. We would remember you long after the last bottle of crystal is dry and the fancy shoes are no longer in vogue.

I'm not saying you should not travel and show off your lifestyle; we all know it's a necessary part of business, and that you are also one of Nigeria's great ambassadors. But if you want your country to look like New York's Time Square, then you and your cohorts have to invest in your country, just like Americans invested in theirs.
Politics › Re: Buhari Must Be Screened If He'll Be The Petroleum Minister - Senators by nextstep(m): 9:43pm On Oct 05, 2015
TonyeBarcanista:
Unfortunately, they can't screen the president! The Man Buhari is the President! All other Ministers are 'assisting' him to discharge his duties as President. If he decide to handle a portfolio himself, it isn't the business of the legislators.
This is why this is so fascinating: the Constitution does not explicitly deal with the case where the President and a Minister position are the same person, so resolving this ambiguity should be interesting.

- I'm sure the President can handle a portfolio without declaring a minister to handle it.
- Of course, without a minister being appointed, then there's nobody to screen.
- However, if he does appoint, Senate can screen.
- Can he, after self-appointment, be subject to Congress oversight and be summoned, like other ministers can?

The 8th Senate is the most dumbest and useless Senate EVER! How can you even think of screening a President that has popular mandate? I think these Senators don't have any idea on their duties as parliamentarians. Lemme be very clear, they CANNOT screen a President.

As for 'Take-a-bow' Senators, I don't see anything different.
They are not screening the President. They plan to screen a man called Buhari for an important ministerial position, in accordance with the Constitution. Afterall, if he's to sign documents in his capacity as Minister, he won't use Presidential letterhead. I'm very curious to see how this goes down...

He is the C-in-C and has been screened by the entire Nigerians before and during the poll! So he has gotten the people's mandate the makes him the president-

what are the senators talking about- mind you I'm pro PDP
His position as president and C-in-C has been confirmed by the Nigerian people. His appointment as a minister, however, has to be screened by the senate, according to the same Constitution he was elected under. The senate has every power and right to screen him, and can refuse his self-appointment. Mind you I'm pro Nigeria (and the Constitution)
Politics › Re: Buhari Must Be Screened If He'll Be The Petroleum Minister - Senators by nextstep(m): 9:02pm On Oct 05, 2015
Heh heh..

He should be screened, in line with the constitution. It's healthy to see the various branches of government flex their constitutional powers so every new president/representative/judge will know the bounds of their power and behave accordingly...

This shows you how much faith we have in our democracy and our civil service. Our top two executives are out yet the country is running along, even without ministers, which is making me wonder if we really need all those ministers. Ideally this should have been a trip for Minister of Foreign Affairs, but its great for the VP to expand his role so the office is not just a figurehead. His presence also underscores to Burkina Faso their importance to us.

I'm really proud of the way ECOWAS handled this situation, and now civilian rule has been restored. We can no longer afford to look the other way when there is coup in Africa. I'm especially proud of the people of Burkina Faso, for getting out and protesting this situation, and to the Army, for protecting the country from the presidential guards.

What do you think about this very simple foundation? It looks like just a single pour of concrete slab directly on the ground. There's some formwork, rebar, and a DPM, but t doesn't look like they did anything to the ground other than leveling it. Unlike the usual 3-4 coaches, sharp sand, etc, this might save even more money as long as you know the ground is never waterlogged. The site we have planned has a very deep water table, and in fact, it's very difficult to reach it with a borehole. It's also on relatively high ground, and during the rains, water flows away. Why use foundation techniques designed for Lekki and PH when we can put the foundation right on the ground? Especially when the slab size is planned to be only 6m x 6m. I can't find it right now, but I thought someone on Nairaland did something similar...

Anyways, any thoughts?
