Well Zeus is God ? Yes or no?

3000+ years ago, yes people thought that Zeus existed and was responsible for thunder and keeping order, though we're not quite sure about how things were created. They even had a story about him killing his father (Chronus aka time, which eventually consumes all things), and freeing his siblings from Chronus' grasp.

Today we smile bemused that people could fervently believe it... in the same way atheists are bemused by the fervent claims of Abrahamic religions today.

If we seem like heretics, please forgive us, for the similarities between what we now call myths, to what we now call religions, are too numerous to ignore

1. Really? You condemn the man who firsts invented knives? undecided

God didn't make wicked people. He instead made man good. Then he gave to man the choice of good and evil, and man chose evil. undecided

2. That's irrational thinking there since you have absolutely no way of confirming that what I know isnt in fact the absolute Truth. You instead assume it isn't because you would rather believe so than trust me claim. undecided

Neither of us have an objective way of confirming what we think, and I know that these dicsussions hardly end anywhere - I assume you're wrong, and you assume I'm wrong. I have no reason to trust your claim, anymore than you to trust my claim.

Sooooo the big bang made your nose , eyes, reproductive organs to make Babies, your liver etc

Some of you have been Sooooo deceived to even argue with.

Atheism is Human's "Convenient" excuse to do as they wish without any restraint!

A man can now go and kill many, thinking there is no repercussion or consequence.

Nobody knows for sure, but some of us find the transition from energy to atoms to proteins to life a much more compelling story than the one about a magical creator that wills things into existence.

Religion is just humanity's way of explaining the Universe and their role in it. There have been countless religions, each confident that their story is the sole truth. You have only adopted another culture's religion. Objectilvely, if the Romans had lasted long enough to colonize us, we'd probably be arguing about their pantheon today.

Genesis is not any better than the Yoruba one about a chicken coming from heaven and spreading the sand to make Earth. The similarities between so many other religions (which the Abrahamic ones are so contemptuous of), makes one question the suppposed superiority of any mythology.

Just think, if we were having this discussion before either of us heard about the Abrahamic God, we might be arguing over the existense of Ala or Olodumare (which are basically equivalent, as the supreme being), but have different origins and stories about them.

The irony of your statment about a man killing many is that religion - and not the lack of it - is often the justification to kill. Rare are the number of atrocities done by atheists.

As rational beings, we don't need a deux to tell us it's wrong to kill.

Rubbish! Even you have not condemned Mikhail Kalashnikov, for making the deadly Ak-47.

Why?

Because you know that it is one thing to create a deadly thing, it is another thing to deploy it.

And this is where you people are funny. You know that rationality rules but when it is against you, you immediately abandon it and change posts to any other ground that you can run to.

By every reasonable ground, no person would ever be an "I hate God"followers. It takes unreasonability, bias and despair to be so.

Fair enough, my bad analogy.

I don't hate God, I simply don't think God exists, for the same reasons I don't think Zeus or Toutatis exist.

Furthermore, if God exists, then every other religion's God must also exist, for they have a lot in common

Why do people like posting this without also posting average salaries from 1980's? I know you're trying to make a point, but please do it with some perspective.

If I showed you pictures of what you could buy with cowries and salt in 1780's you would be amazed.

Fun fact: sal, the Latin word for salt, was often used as payment to Roman legionnaires - their salarium, is what we now call salary.

It's not really the same reasoning that explains stars. It simply talks about the expansion of the universe from a random explosion (my layman way of understanding it). Moreover, at heart, it's a theory. I can assure you that it will be phased out sooner or later.

Yes it is a theory. I say the same reasoning because understanding why stars burn (and can turn to supernovae), coupled with the fact that the Universe is still expanding (and cooling), leads one to theory of a single point. I also think it's open to change (or could just be plain wrong), but it's quite compelling.

Exactly, Religion is man's attempt at explaining his existence, therefore they invent stories according to the history of their origins...
World powers after conquering colonies impose their system of worship on them and just as in our case in Nigeria, the Christian and Islamic missionaries imposing their diverging ways on us but because it was gift wrapped with education and so called civilization we became trapped...

Very eloquently said!

Why shouldn't He?
And besides, it is, as it is!
Utter rubbish! Look at Genesis 6, do you not see how shocked God was that you people are so very wicked?

If a person creates a thing that kills people, we condemn that person. God made wicked people, and we just have to accept it?

But let's be rational: neither of us is going to change their opinion; neither of us really knows the truth, even though we may strongly believe in our positions. I can't accept your use of the Bible to prove the existence of God, any more than I can accept sacred texts from the Egyptians or Mayans. In turn, you can't accept that your Bible is not the source of truth, and all you think you know has been written in it's pages.

Let's chill out, have a beer, and try to enjoy the life we have. It's the only thing we know for sure.

The big bang theory is a goddamned theory man. Like it is just speculation with a few half arsed truths. The only people who believe that trash are fedora wearing atheists, the annoying ones that see every opportunity to insult religious people.

It's a theory informed by our current understanding of the nature of the Universe.
I prefer this theory because it makes logical sense (albeit could be proven wrong at some point when our understanding of nature evolves). It's brought to you by the same thinking that explains stars, gravity, elecromagnetism, etc.

Funny, the phrase "let there be light" matches the Big Bang, and somehow I wonder if scientists are the current way God explains things to people. It was hard to explain in the book of Genesis, but now that people have a more sophisticated understanding, the phenomena are being explained better. It would be amusing to find the Big Bang in a revised bible 3,000 years from now.

Obviously you imagine a God to be void of anger, pleasure, joy, sorrow etc like a robot.

That's why the Bible is accurate because God made us to be like Him which is why you all say when it suits you that ''you are not a robot"

Why should a supreme being feel sorrow or anger, or even joy? Everything is going to His plan, so he should have no surprises that invoke disappointment or joy.

My atheism was informed by:
- the utter callousness a God has for the death of innocent people, over and over again. The reply of "can't question God" doesn't really assuage this
- the feeling that God constantly makes mistakes and kills a whole bunch of people: floods, earthquakes, fires; ostensibly because he made people, they didn't do what he wanted, so he resets...
- the similarity of blood sacrifices to other religions: from Isaac to Jesus... blood is spilt as atonement.
- unanswered questions about what happens to souls of unborn children, those who died before they could understand Jesus, those who didn't hear about Jesus in their lifetime.
- striking similarity to other religions that have been lost to history, or in the case of my ancestor's religion, demonized by the modern ones

God can never appear to any man if that's what you expect.

He wants to know people who genuinely love and fear Him without seeing Him.

It's better to believe that heaven exists, prepare for it and later find out that it doesn't exist than not believe that heaven exists, live a reckless lifestyle and find out that heaven is real.

But for those who lived before the Bible was written... do they get to go to heaven? What about those who died a year after Jesus died for their sins, but the Gospel had not reached them, because there was no telephone, and people had to trek or canoe for months, if not years to cover distances. How far?

Dtruthspeaker:

See, Proof of madness! Exactly what that mad man in ring road said "in the beginning the phone made the man..."

If you think objectively about other ancient people's religions (e.g. the Greeks, Romans, Yorubas, Aztecs), you'll come to the conclusion that they are not that different from modern religions:

- supreme being, deities and intermediaries (good and bad), who are all somehow interested in humans
- these beings also display human emotions like anger, pleasure, jealousy, ambition, etc.
- elaborate stories that teach, warn, praise, and basically keep their adherants entranced
- apparently they even make mistakes and flood or burn the whole place down to restart
- upon death, humans will transcend into that spiritual plane

Sounds like human invention to me. Just different ways of humans trying to explain their role in a vast Universe.

What did he do better than tinubu as governor?

Well, one has the strong aura of suspicion about his tenure and looted funds. And continues to have undue influence on the state's purse.

The other doesn't, though some have tried to paint his offshore account as illegal. He also prudently invested state funds.

So OP, you're still taken in by campaign promises? I remember one dullard promising to fix light, the naira, security, poverty. All he did was make everything worse. At least Tinubu has the guts to say: "na my turn. F all y'all."

I'm looking at what the candidates have all done during their tenure (either as governor, or as vp), and truth be told, Lagos improved a lot under Tinubu; the same way Anambra improved under Obi; the same way there was definite improvement while Atiku was vp.

However, I put no stock in any candidate's campaign promises.
Education / Re: 2022 Unity School Cut Off Marks State By State by nextstep(m): 5:41pm On Jun 27, 2022
The thing about unity/quota system is that it's supposed to create opportunities for disadvantaged communities, with the hope that within a generation, things would have evened out, as students become parents and emphasize education for their own children. As students become leaders and administrators, they will enact the correct policies.

Unfortunately, it has not been the case for Nigeria. There's been very little change between this list and when I sat common entrance nearly 30 years ago. In many ways, this country has been at standstill since 1960. We have some trappings of modernity, but for the most part, Nigeria in 1960 and 2022 are barely indistinguishable.

Korea, China, and Dubai went from backwater countries, to some of the most economical marvels in those same 3 decades. Why is the leadership in Northern Nigeria just refusing to catch up? Are they satisfied with the status quo? Will we still be talking unity schools 30
years from now? What a shame.

There is a reason business people from all over the world go to different countries to learn new techniques. You'll find British researchers in America; Americans in Germany; Japanese in America; etc. And these are countries already doing well, but they are constantly learning from each other and improving. Korea is where it is because it learned from Japan; Japan got the boost by learning from America; in turn America learned a ton from the UK; you'll even find that a lot of the basis of pre-Industrial UK technology have their origins in Rome.

We are "aping" American system of government, not really practicing the tenets of democracy, free press, free and fair elections, etc. But I feel we would be much worse off if we didn't take lessons from America, who took lessons from the English and the ancient Greeks.

Wetin be all this now?
Is it Okowa that caused Atiku to emerge as presidential candidate? Is it not the delegates, and didn't all these people push for a northern presidency? They should take their hurt feelings to the delegates. Knowing my people, I won't even be surprised that the people penning this letter voted for Atiku.

OK, now PDP's presidential candidate has been chosen (Atiku) by the delegates; does wisdom not require that the running mate be from South?

Okowa has for the longest time been gunning for the VP position, which he hopes will make him more suitable for the top job at some point.

What then is all the brouhaha. As a man with Ika heritage myself, I'm torn. I personally want Obi to be president, but I also want to support Okowa. Then again, my feeling is that Obi is the better candidate for the top job, so my vote is with him.

Thing is, if Obi wins, Okowa won't be eligible till we've had another Northern presidency, but if Atiku wins, the chances for Okowa get better.

But not all these noise that these people are making.
