Romance / Re: In Defense Of Polygamy, And How It Benefits Women The Most by nextstep(m): 7:41pm On Aug 08, 2023 |
Amarisco: Amarisco: I think the world "calibre" is close, but perhaps "eligible" would be a less-loaded/biased word, in the sense that, while a woman is eligible for marriage by (e.g.) 21, a man in her age-group won't be until (e.g.) 26. I think the disparity comes down to two factors: 1. In any age group you'll typically have younger women pairing with older men (can be a difference of 4-10 years). GIrls mature faster than boys because babies need to be borne earlier, and men later because they need to acquire resources to cater for their family. We see this play out in most dating choices. 2. the age pyramid (fewer number of older people at the top, and larger numbers of younger people at the bottom - see picture), practically guarantees there is a smaller pool of men for women to choose from, in pretty much any age-bracket after 20, especially if women choose up in age and status. Then add the elegant treatment on the attrition of men due to early deaths or removal from the pool, and I'm fully convinced that there are always more women chasing fewer men, hence why polyandry is inevitable. It also means that generally, most men before 26 are "invisible" to women as far as marriage is concerned. pansophist: 1 Like

My question is: "why can't she take care of her husband with the education and skills she learned"? I mean this is supposed to be a time of gender parity, and we all went to the same schools, and have similar opportunities in life. She should silently bear the burden of being a breadwinner, just as men have been doing for centuries. Afterall she even has free babysitter in the form of husband and his mother 1 Like |

Foreign Affairs / Re: Nigeria Commences Sanctions Against Niger, Cuts Off Electricity Supply by nextstep(m): 7:08pm On Aug 02, 2023 |
NwaNimo1: It's an agreement we made so Niger won't dam the river upstream of us for their own hydro plant. We had enough capacity from Kainji back in the 70's; trouble is we didn't plan for the explosive growth in population and demand, and waste a lot on an inefficient grid. see: https://dailytrust.com/presidency-why-nigeria-exports-electricity-to-benin-togo-niger/ If there's a treaty in place, then Nigeria is in violation of those agreements, coup notwithstanding, and will encourage Niger to accelerate their plans for a dam. |

This man is talking of committing war crimes here. For what it's worth, there was a blockade, and millions of people died of starvation, so I'm not sure what his point is. You do realize that people have a fundamental right to self-determination. The US was founded by rebels who felt being under the United Kingdom was not working for them... it cannot be right to starve civilians because they said: "we no want again" |
Romance / Re: Why Is Cheating Considered Normal For Men? by nextstep(m): 11:33pm On Aug 01, 2023 |
AlphaHakimi: This is one of the more eloquent responses on this thread that clearly explains the underlying reason for polygamy, and why it's seen in a bad light by those it doesn't favor. I was stating that basically those with the financial means will make the rules about who can "cheat" - or be in poly-amorous relationships; and that it would be hard for most women to gain that advantage. Some character just bleated out "wrong!" in a kneejerk response, so I'm glad to see some people can still put their thoughts to words sensibly. |

Kobojunkie: 1Sharon: Good point... clone would be genetically the same. Alright, so maybe his word choice wasn't the best, but I get the gist. But still, I think the problem is that our society, influenced by Judeo-Christian ideology, imposes on men a monogamy that is not natural - and we know that. Men are biologically predisposed to be polygamous - a man can make babies with many women in a given period, and is disposed to sharing his seed. The opposite is not true (i.e. a woman can only get pregnant once in a given period), and would be more disposed to forming a bond with a single partner that can provide for that seed. You can even see this in preference: generally men look for clues of child-bearing; women look for clues of child-rearing (status in society, ability to provide/protect). Socio-economically, a woman has been (fairly or not), seen as a dependent to transfer from her father's house to her husband's house. It is not ok for a dependent to cheat. On the other hand, a man is seen as a independent agent, able to accommodate as may dependents as his strength allows. I will get some flogging for this line of reasoning, but the truth is: those who control the finances get to call the shots. Women as a group are unlikely to be able to devote the same amount of time and energy to advancing in their careers as men if they want to also carry and nurse multiple young. In societies where women are choosing careers, there are fewer babies being born. Not saying that's good or bad, but I'm just pointing out that - given the same mental capacity - a woman over her lifetime would have to share her time and energy in a way most men don't. And the consequence of that is ability to control finances. |

cucumbar: No vex. I voted for Obi, but I cannot see good and call it bad. If Obihad become president, he would likely have done the same float, and the rates would be doing the same thing. Removing subsidy and floating the Naira are two things that make sense, no matter who did it. There's going to be pain, but our focus should not be on managing the symptoms, but on moving us to a producing country. |
