tpiah01:I don't know about the veracity of this particular story, but I've observed this phenomenon in several countries where language imperialism still holds sway, albeit in subtle ways. I doubt the officials would object to naming the child Mary (Hebrew), Katherine (English), Rosaria (Spanish), Stephanie (French), Heidi (German), or Anastasia (Greek). None of these are Portuguese sounding. Are you telling me that parents from other parts of the world who reside in Brazil are denied their choice of baby names to reflect their own origin? This is a racist and ignorant policy. Yoruba names are just as valid as names from other countries in Europe. Yes, the child may be subject to some bullying in school (but shouldn't teachers and other adults be sensitized to prevent children from doing it), but that is not sufficient reason to deny a child her heritage. |
ukandi1: ![]() My broda, nothing is for free oh. Either u pay up front with recharge card, drinks, (and the "help me buy medicine for my dying mother" fund), or you pay later with kudi and transport fee. I just wanted to do my part and contribute to the Rivers economy |
From Wikipedia, and also from my vague recollection: it is the first Sunday after the first full moon of the Spring Season. As the moon's orbit around Earth (traditional month) does not coincide with the Earth's orbit around the Sun (year), there can be up to twenty-something days' difference between the full moon and the first day of Spring. "When is the first day of Spring?" you ask. Why that is in turned defined by the March equinox when the Sun appears to leave the southern hemisphere and cross the celestial equator. This is of course as seen from countries in the Northern hemisphere, and is harder to observe for those of us close to the Equator, and makes little sense for those in the southern hemisphere. Traditionally, Passover was related to the full moon and Spring, etc... and since nobody thought to record the actual date (I joke; our modern calendar did not exist then), the best we can do is shift the weekend of Christ's death and resurrection to always be one weekend after Passover. |
Thanks for this insightful post about Cross Rivers, also taking time to delve into details about economics, educational aspects, and general life. Your post shows one of the many reasons our NYSC is a positive thing: exposing Nigerians to diFferent parts of our wonderful country. Makes me wish I could spend a year there too. |
He's a media artist... expressing his art through culture... carry on my bro. |
eleojo23:It's hard to be self sufficient as a state when oil/mineral revenue goes to the federal government directly. The bulk of tax on profits on industry in a state also goes to the federal government and a state dare not raise its tax rates for fear industry will simply relocate to a lower tax base. The bulk of citizens' taxes also go to the federal system. The best a state can hope for is improve revenue from sales tax. To do so they encourage industry with incentives, which will hire a lot of people with good paying jobs. Those people will buy goods and services that match their income level, which leads to increased revenue from sales tax. Even in US and UK, the states depend heavily on the federal government which bails them out on occasion. In fact the federal government often uses the threat of denying funds for roads, health care, etc to keep states in check. |
Miss. By a long kilometer. Looks like somebody draped a curtain on her. |
Lovely! This is one lady who knows how to use makeup properly, choosing the right colors for lipstick and eye shadow. This type of makeup is understated, brings out your natural beauty and (speaking for most guys), is what we actually prefer. For all you other ladies who insist on too much foundation, or using too much red, gold, and purple on your face, with dragon eyebrows, and silly instagram poses, take your cue from this lady. |
3m people? Talk about pulling numbers out of thin air. Most of their raw materials can be made available in commercial quantities if they were serious: how long does corn, wheat, sugar cane, or barley take to grow? No be six months? Smh But seriously, this can be a great opportunity for those who are willing and able: find a critical imported raw material, grow it, process it, and sell it to these manufacturers. If only a bank would be willing to loan me money for this enterprise... |
Yet another avenue for corruption... how much Naira will be exchanged for a fake certificate? "especially distressed and dilapidated buildings in the state to ensure that integrity and stability tests are conducted on their building to prevent tragedy." Yes, because the landlords of dilapidated buildings didn't have the funds to fix their buildings, but instead will spend the money on tests that show what we already know... Carry on sha. |
IamJose:I think I understand what you're saying, but she chose two wrong topics to experiment with. Is it anybody's fault that very few people had interest in the puppies for sale? Why should anybody care to retweet ads about dogs for sale? Just because she thinks they are valuable? I'm not looking for a puppy nor do I know who is. Am I unserious for ignoring g her post? And what is more serious in life than partnering up? That is what all living things are designed to do: the male birds calling loudly with bright plumage, the male frogs croaking with loud voices, the male humans tweeting and following... Her experiment was to do what exactly? And the conclusion is that I don't support small business but will retweet a marriage quest? Well 10 minutes of game achieved... 0 dogs sold. |
Fear and greed rules the financial markets worldwide. When naira appreciated, the demand for dollar went up, since more Nigerians saw that they could buy dollars cheaper than the day before. Simultaneously, those with dollars were hesitant to sell, since the dollar had effectively depreciated. So there were fewer dollars on the market at the end of the day (fewer sellers), yet more demand for the dollar (more buyers). This lead to the reversal. What we need is consistent influx of dollars to make sure it doesn't get scarce, but of course that is why we're in this jam in the first place |
popesam1:Chai! Women don suffer, after he don Bleep many toto, he's now forming faithful husband abi. Wahala dey for women. See what I did there? |
I must say I'm proud of how she handled this period. Stay low key so that you and your baby will be at rest during pregnancy from all naysayers and mean spirited people who might have been abusing her on social media for no good reason, or praying for something bad to happen, and so on. Keep your private matters private and when it's time to show the world, surprise us with good news. She definitely gained some points with this move. Carry go jare |
Diabolical reasons? If I hear. Even for those women who think it's for charm, it's totally useless. We are ao superstitious it's unbelievable. How Come I never hear of wristwatch being used as a charm? Or necklace? Or earring? Or shoes? Only waistband. Na wah o. It's sexy, pure and simple. And like everything else a woman wears, complements and enhances her natural beauty. I love it when I see it (and when I hear it moving rhythmically) ![]() OP, send that lady my way so somebody can will really appreciate those beads. SMH. |
Duly reporting for class |
It's not the outside woman we should be calling home wrecker... What about the husband that allowed his home to be wrecked by his own actions? |
![]() Ibadan no dey carry last! I too must be discovered IJN, amen |
ANTONINEUTRON: sonofananimal:Well, to be fair, he did say highly marketable... I doubt astrophysics or marine biology are applicable to the current labour market in Nigeria ![]() |
Serves him right... At first I thought she should have warned him, but after reading I see she did. Then he slapped her! For warning him? I'm guessing he needs more clubs on his head before learning to respect women. Idiot |
Good gesture, thanks. Of course it's not my money, but I can't help but wonder if the money and car won't be better spent creating a small "shoe rack factory"... But good nonetheless... |
Loved the article... hate the comments bashing Nollywood, complaining about quality, originality. Have you bothered to look at the history of film in the US, India, Taiwan? Take a look at Hollywood movies in the early years and you'll see most movies were cringe worthy by today's standards, slapped together by fledgling directors and production houses. Same for the awful Indian and Taiwanese movies in those countries in their younger days. Nollywood is maturing and has many facets to it, from epic films, made for TV dramas, to the more slapstick, as well as Yoruba and Ibo movies. You may not watch it, but enough people are watching it around the world to make it a $0.6 billion USD industry. That's more than half a billion. Hard currency, and a good chunk must bring in foreign exchange too for the audience outside Nigeria. Though you may complain about it, it resonates with enough people around the world so far that they copy the hair styles, fashions, and accents. It also ea How about predictability and rehashing? Show me a Hollywood film poster, and I can describe the plot to you with pretty good accuracy. How many times are we going to see the same rehashed plot in their love comedies, or their cop stories, or the deranged/brilliant lone crusader stories? I don't remember the last time I saw a Hollywood movie, but I can rest assured that any new movies coming out have very similar storylines to anything produced since 1980s, so I'm not missing much. But from "Gidi Up", "The meeting", "Last Flight to Abuja", "Mr. & Mrs", "Maami", and so many other new Nollywood productions, I'm really enjoying this time in our history. |
Ndi is kinda cute. She's now single shey? Abeg pass me her 080 ![]() |
Abeg let's hear word... when police will ask you to bring N200k for "mobilization" |
But all the indoor pictures are well lit? I even saw some lights on... What's the story there? Anyway sha, they should have done better |
There are 10 fish left. Drown into the bottom of tank. Swam away to where? |
First time I saw this was in Banky W's "Jasi", where the aristo washed his hand with crystal before eating Egusi ![]() I say go ahead and use the drink how you like. For those who would rather drink it, you know it turns to piss in 2-4 hours and has no nutritional benefit, right? so it's just a waste to drink it anyways. May I be able to wash my hands with champagne this year too. ami. |
Davido, tricking off your fame is still tricking. ![]() Anyway, make sure you wrap the condom in tissue and flush it after use. Don't want your latest ![]() |
Rossikk:You're right, but the vulgarity was also committed by the fans who could have respected themselves and just left the money. Afterall, the fact that their at an airport (likely arrivin or departing), suggests they're not dirt poor. Haba, fans, respect urselves so your star won't disrespect you. |
njiasi30:You are right, but... I'm a big fan of Davido and I'm not condoning his actions, but the fans too did not respect themselves. A person with self respect will not scramble for money thrown like chickens chasing corn. It goes both ways and if some fans stopped disrespecting themselves, Davido would not be seen throwing money. |
Well explained |
I want my #lovelagos tshirt. Nice one! |
