A Kentucky principal who once made headlines for trying to ban books with what he deemed inappropriate content has been indicted on child pornography charges.

News outlets reported Tuesday that a grand jury charged 54-year-old Phillip Todd Wilson, principal of the Clark County Area Technology Center, with 17 child pornography possession and distribution charges. Kentucky State police filed 15 counts each of the charges against Wilson in August.

Clark County Schools officials told news outlets they were “shocked and dismayed” at the accusations. WKYT-TV reports the education department no longer employs Wilson.

[/b]A Roman Catholic bishop named by Pope Francis to investigate the church’s response to clergy sexual abuse in Buffalo, New York, has himself been accused of sexual abuse of a child,[b] an attorney for the alleged victim notified the church this week.

The attorney informed Catholic officials in New Jersey that he is preparing a lawsuit on behalf of a client who says he was molested by Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio in the mid-1970s, when DiMarzio was a parish priest in Jersey City.

DiMarzio said there is no truth to the accusation.

“I am just learning about this allegation,” he said in a statement Tuesday to The Associated Press. “In my nearly 50-year ministry as a priest, I have never engaged in unlawful or inappropriate behavior and I emphatically deny this allegation. I am confident I will be fully vindicated.”

A Minnesota bishop who’s the subject of a Vatican-ordered investigation said in sworn testimony released Tuesday that he was trying to protect the confidentiality of a man who said he was sexually abused by a popular priest when he certified to other church officials that the priest was fit for ministry and to work with children.

Bishop Michael Hoeppner of the Diocese of Crookston in northwestern Minnesota acknowledged in the videotaped deposition last year that he stated in writing to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 2012 that Monsignor Roger Grundhaus was [/b]“a person of good moral character and reputation” and that he was unaware of anything in the priest’s background that would “render him unsuitable to work with minor children.”[b]

But the accuser, Ron Vasek, had already told Hoeppner by 2011 that [/b]Grundhaus had abused him in the early 1970s when he was 16.[b] Vasek was hoping to become a deacon when he met with the bishop. Vasek would later sue the diocese, alleging that the bishop blackmailed him into retracting his allegations. That lawsuit settled for an undisclosed sum in 2017.
Pressed by attorney Jeffrey Anderson on why he made that assertion to the archdiocese when he already knew about Vasek’s allegations, the bishop replied that [/b]Vasek had asked him for “complete confidentiality” and that he was respecting that.[b]

Anderson released the video, the letter to the archdiocese and other documents at a news conference where he called on the Vatican to remove Hoeppner immediately. Anderson received the documents and took Hoeppner’s deposition in a lawsuit that ended in a $5 million settlement in July between the diocese and 15 people, including Vasek, who said they were abused by priests.

Jeriah Mast, a former missionary who worked for a global ministry with ties to Lancaster County, was sentenced in Holmes County, Ohio, Tuesday morning to nine years in state prison for sexually abusing Anabaptist youths.

Mast, 38, was sentenced by Holmes County Common Pleas Court Judge Robert D. Rinfret before a packed courtroom. Prior to sentencing, he apologized to his victims.

Holmes County Prosecutor Sean Warner said the plea deal recommended concurrent five-year sentences but Holmes County Judge Robert D. Rinfret opted to make the sentences consecutive. Warner said one of the two victims asked for the maximum five-year sentence. The other agreed to a reduced sentence.
Mast pled guilty to two felonies for gross sexual imposition as part of a plea deal in October. He faced a maximum sentence of 10 years and a fine of $20,000.

He had been charged in July with 14 counts, including seven felonies, but 12 of those charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement. Investigators found that all but two of the five victims in the case were at least 13 years old at the time, making those misdemeanor offenses that were beyond their statute of limitations, Warner said. The assaults occurred between 1999 and 2008.

Mast will serve his time at Lorain Correctional Institution in Grafton, Ohio.

A church that sits in the path of a proposed Costco would be displaced by a parking lot, according to plans being reviewed by the Duluth Planning Commission.

The proposal, first reported by KBJR 6 in October, calls for the discount warehouse chain to be built at the corner of West Arrowhead Road and Haines Road.
The proposal consists of a Costco membership club, tire center, liquor pod and gas station.
New Life Lutheran Church currently sits on a part of that land. It opened its doors in 2016.

The church is home to about 85 congregants.

When reached by phone Thursday, Mary Robinson, the president of the church, said while nothing is certain at this time, there are ongoing discussions about the church’s future.

A purchase agreement has not been finalized.

Plans for the more than 160,000 square foot building will go before the Duluth Planning Commission next Tuesday.

The Russian Orthodox Church's Ryazan diocese has suspended a local priest named Vladimir Pokrovsky for a year, following revelations that he has “systematically violated church discipline” by abusing alcohol and beating members of his family. Pokrovsky’s wife, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, told the website Ya62.ru that her husband lifts weights at home and frequently knocks her down, kicks her, and chokes her. After a recent attack, she finally reported him to the police.

Lyubov Pokrovskaya also supplied journalists with photos of her injuries and an audio recording of her intoxicated husband threatening to kill her, after she asked him to release her. She is currently in hiding with their four children.

A Bronx pastor from Yonkers is accused of killing his estranged wife in gruesome fashion in front of her two grandchildren in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx.

Victor Mateo, a 63-year-old Yonkers resident, hit his estranged wife Noelia Mateo, 58, with his car when she walked out of her house to bring her 11- and 9-year-old grandchildren to school on Oct. 3, the Bronx District Attorney's Office said.

[/b]Noelia hid under her car, and Victor allegedly got in her car, ran her over with it and then hacked her with a machete, Bronx prosecutors said.[b]

The two young children watched the entire scene unfold.

Victor, who's a pastor at the Christian Congregation The Redeemer Church in the Bronx, was arrested on Oct. 10 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, and extradited to the Bronx.

On Tuesday, he was arraigned in Bronx Supreme Court on charges of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

He was taken to jail and is due back in court on Jan. 22.
“The defendant cruelly attacked his wife, from whom he had been estranged for approximately a month, in front her two young grandchildren," Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said in a statement. "We will pursue justice for the victim, as well as her family members who have been deeply traumatized by the terrible attack.”

In a report published Wednesday by Charisma News, five women, whose names were intentionally replaced with pseudonyms by the outlet, came forward with accusations about Crist. A Regina pastor has resigned and been stripped of his licence to minister more than a year and a half after church leaders learned he had abused his power to prey on a woman in his congregation.

Rev. Jerven Weekes had been the lead pastor for more than a decade at Rosewood Park Alliance Church, one of 440 evangelical Protestant churches in the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) in Canada.

On Oct. 20, during Sunday service, the church's local chairman sobbed openly as he announced the pastor's resignation and called it a matter of "employee-employer confidentiality." A few days later, the national organization expelled him from all C&MA churches.

CBC News has confirmed that three women complained to the church about sexual harassment or inappropriate behaviour by Weekes in the past two years.

In April 2018, an external investigator informed church leaders — both local and national — that there was sufficient evidence in text messages to show Weekes had been "grooming" one victim for "inappropriate sexual conversation" and that "inappropriate sexualized behaviour" was "an abuse of power" and his position of trust.

Grooming is a process in which a perpetrator gains a person's trust, breaks down their defences and then begins to manipulate them for sexual purposes, according to sexual violence experts.

The resignation and expulsion come in the wake of two women sharing their allegations publicly in a Regina podcast that examines faith and justice issues.

Christa Hunt and Liz Herod said they wanted to expose how church leaders mishandled their complaints and kept the pastor's actions a secret from the congregation.

CBC News spoke with Hunt and Herod to verify details and confirm that their stories had been accurately reflected in the Shipwreck Over Safety podcast. They requested that CBC News use those accounts, with permission from the podcast producers, to spare them having to relive their experience.

'Grooming'
In January 2014, Hunt felt she had hit "rock bottom."

She was searching for help for herself, her kids and her marriage. A friend invited her to attend Rosewood Park church.

Hunt sought counselling from Rev. Weekes. Soon after, he started texting her. Hunt said it made her feel "so special." She said she found a sense of belonging she'd been looking for.

She valued Weekes's guidance and "put him on a pedestal."

Screengrabs of text exchanges, shared with CBC News, reveal that Weekes began to compliment Hunt and to introduce more sexualized content.

By 2016, Hunt said she started to feel "weird," but was plagued by self-doubt. She said she didn't trust her gut. She convinced herself to ignore "red flags" because he was a pastor.

She felt torn. On one hand, she relied on him. He helped her find a new place to live after her marriage broke down. On the other hand, she had started to stay off social media at night when she knew he might be online, in order to avoid contact.

The sexual nature of Weekes's text messages to Hunt began to escalate.

She tried to defuse the situation, texting him, "innocent flirting is harmless, and if it wasn't harmless, I would be crushed."

In August 2017, he texted her that he liked her lips. Then, soon after, Weekes asked her whether she was good at MouthAction, deep throats, gags and screams in bed[b][/b]. He asked her if she likes [/b]men that are "big, medium or small."[b]

Well-known pastor Bryan Fulwider, a co-host of the currently suspended “Friends Talking Faith” radio show, has killed himself in the wake of child-rape allegations, police in Florida said.

Police were called at 11:50 p.m. on Sunday to his Altamonte Springs home in central Florida, where police pronounced him dead, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The 59-year-old pastor had been released on bail Oct. 17 after being hit with more than 30 counts of sexual battery by a person who is in a position of custodial authority to a person less than 18 years of age. He was arrested Oct. 1, according to Winter Park police.

While he had pleaded not guilty, there was a wealth of incriminating evidence, including an hourlong phone call with the alleged victim in which he admitted he’d groomed her and was a predator, the Sentinel reported. He faced potential life in prison.
Arrest documents obtained by the newspaper alleged that the pastor had begun grooming the girl when she was 13, began raping her at 14 and continued do to so more than 100 times between 2005 and 2010. She was a congregant at First Congregational Church of Winter Park, where Fulwider was senior minister, the Sentinel said.

So far only one victim has come forward, but police are investigating whether there are more. His alleged victim remained anonymous but released a statement to the Sentinel.

“Fulwider’s day in court will never come because he knew all the truths I could tell,” the woman wrote in a statement, shared with the newspaper on the condition of anonymity. “My story doesn’t stop with his cowardice through; I will work in the coming months to get justice for myself and any other victims impacted by Fulwider’s abuse.”

Father Matthew Jolley was duped by the officer he first approached on the Grindr dating app in September. It took the priest less than 20 minutes to tell the undercover officer – posing as a 36-year-old bisexual man – that he was sexually interested in young children. Over the course of a number of depraved chats, Jolley, 32, admitted while he mainly liked girls, a ‘cute’ boy would also be of interest, the Manchester Evening News reports. [/b]After telling the police officer he wanted to ‘do his two-year-old son’ – who did not exist – the priest then sent an indecent image of himself.[b]
The lurid conversation shifted from Grindr to Kik Messenger and later to Wickr – an encrypted platform for private chats. In these chats, Jolley revealed his sick fantasy of ‘sharing’ the child with his dad.
Liverpool Crown Court heard Jolley began communicating with the officer while based in Belgium but planned to return to the UK for two weeks before travelling to Rome in October. On 26 September he arranged to meet the undercover cop at a home in Halton, Cheshire. When the priest arrived Jolley described what he wanted to do to the defenceless child – completely oblivious to the fact he was talking to an undercover officer. [/b]When the officer revealed his true identity the priest tried to make a run for it but was tackled to the ground[b] and arrested.

If I believe in God and He exists, I’ve gained everything. If I believe in God and He doesn’t exist, I’ve lost nothing. If I disbelieve, and He does exist, I’ve lost everything. Therefore, a rational person who has any doubt should take the leap of faith just in case. I don’t know when I first heard about Pascal’s Wager, the argument for believing in God based on possible outcomes. It went on to be an enormous part of my training to defend Christianity in a secular and hostile culture and be ready always to give an apologia for the hope within me.

Being a warrior for Christ was, without any hesitation, everything to me. I was homeschooled outside Molalla, Oregon, with a strong emphasis on debate, the written word, and defending the faith. I don’t remember asking Jesus into my heart, but my parents say I was about four or five at an Easter Sunday service. What I do remember is that my entire childhood revolved around reinforcing and strengthening that commitment through a social life centered on church and a curriculum centered on Creation science. I was eight when I first heard the earth was 6,000 years old, which quickly became a central theological litmus test for whether one took God at His Word.

I would feel my stomach churn wondering if there was nobody there to hear me, then convince myself it was my fault that I didn’t believe hard enough, or that I was trying to connect with God on my own strength, or something along those lines. Then, I’d redouble my efforts to connect to God more strongly in worship, or in Bible reading. If I ever felt doubts, my focus was to study to show myself approved, a workman who need not be ashamed.

So study I did. Delving into the Bible was never my weakness. Starting when I was 13, I memorized twenty-two books of the New Testament, all in KJV. I got some of my earliest public speaking experience reciting chapters of the Bible aloud in front of church, and it was only a matter of time before my pastor was mentoring me to teach and preach from the Word of God. I think I was fifteen when I started, and seriously considered the ministry as a calling throughout my teenage years. I never decided against it, really. I just had the opportunity to go to law school and thought I would get my seminary degree in my spare time. That way, I could be available whenever a congregation might need me to step into that role in the future while making a living in the meantime. So during my two summers of law school, I took seminary classes online, always aspiring to be an advocate for Christianity in the public arena.

On that track, I learned there’s a funny thing about legal education. It requires you to argue for both sides of a case. The better you understand your opponent’s position, the better you will be at advancing your own. So in the interest of being the best Christian apologist I could be, I learned a fair bit about arguments for and against Christianity and took a strong interest in the work of the apologist who influenced me most growing up, Ken Ham. When he debated Bill Nye the Science Guy on the scientific legitimacy of creationism, I was about halfway through law school and organized a debate watch party, ordered pizza, and gathered my evangelical colleagues to root for Ham together. So imagine how [/b]devastating it was to watch my childhood icon be so embarrassingly destroyed before my very eyes.[b] Ken Ham brought faith to an evidence fight, and even my fundamentalist creationist eyes could see it. I resolved in that moment to learn more about evolution, astronomy, and geology so that, when it was my turn to debate the Bill Nyes of the world, I would do better than Ken Ham had........................................
