A murder-for-hire plot in Chester County quickly unraveled after the hitman reported the incident to police. What’s even more shocking is the person behind the alleged crime is a former pastor.
[/b]Police say the former pastor of Calvary Fellowship in Downingtown wanted the current head pastor killed.[b] The motive was revenge.


Jacob Malone was used to speaking in front of cameras while working as a pastor at Calvary Fellowship, a megachurch in Downingtown.

But Malone recently stood in front of a police camera for his mugshot after authorities say [/b]he offered a hitman $5,000 to kill his former boss and head of the church, Pastor Lee Wiggins.[b]

“Our hearts continue to go out to Jacob Malone, we continue to pray for him,” Calvary Fellowship spokesperson Pastor Mike Edelman said.

Officers arrested Malone on Tuesday but it’s not his first run-in with police involving his own church.

Court documents show Malone pleaded guilty in 2017 to sexually assaulting and impregnating a 16-year-old girl. The church had reported him to police before his arrest.

Malone was serving a three- to six-year sentence when he allegedly told an inmate, “You seem like the person to find someone for me.”

[/b]He later offered the inmate the $5,000 to killed Pastor Wiggins and offered even more money to kill a Chester County judge who sent him to prison.[b]

Instead, the inmate told police about the murder-for-hire scheme.

People Eyewitness News talked to are shocked.

“To do that is just wrong,” said one person.

“They’re not following biblical principles,” said another.
While the church is in a forgiving spirit, Malone appears to be less so.

The Rev. Gregory Lisby, a priest in the Diocese of Western Massachusetts, [/b]pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography[b] on Feb. 21, having been charged after FBI agents raided the rectory where he was living in September. The same day, the diocese also revealed that, since Lisby’s arrest, it has “received devastating credible evidence” that Lisby sexually abused a teenager.
Lisby had been living with his husband, then the rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Worcester, in the church’s rectory with their two children when the FBI found nearly 200 images and videos of child pornography in a Microsoft account Lisby used, according to court records.

At the time, Lisby was working as a kindergarten teacher in a public school in Holyoke, having been suspended in 2018 from his position as rector of All Saints Church in Worcester “for an inappropriate relationship with an adult that did not involve sexual contact,” Western Massachusetts Bishop Douglas Fisher wrote in a letter to the diocese shortly after Lisby’s arrest. Fisher added in that letter that the diocese had “no reason to believe that children in our diocese have been victimized in this situation.”

Lisby pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in federal court in Worcester. In a letter to the diocese announcing Lisby’s plea, Fisher also shared that the diocese had learned of the abuse allegation against Lisby. The letter did not specify where or when the abuse is alleged to have occurred except to say that it happened after Lisby was ordained a priest in 2007. A spokeswoman for the diocese declined to provide additional details, in the interest of the victim’s privacy, but said that law enforcement is aware of the situation.

“I am deeply saddened to know that a priest is alleged to have committed such a grievous sin,” Fisher wrote, “and on behalf of the entire church, I offer my most heartfelt apology to the victim, the victim’s family and to everyone whose trust in the church has been violated.
“I cannot undo this terrible situation, but I can commit our diocese to telling the truth and seeking healing and reconciliation for anyone who has been harmed by Lisby.”

Fisher stressed that Lisby’s husband, who has filed for divorce, “remains a priest in good standing and a valuable leader of the diocese” and “is in no way implicated in any of these charges.”

Lisby is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25 and could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Fisher said the diocese is in the process of removing him from the priesthood.

Acton Bowen, the evangelist who served as a youth minister for teenage boys and became a best-selling author was given the maximum sentence for all 28 charges related to [/b]sexually abusing six teenagers[b] in Etowah County on Friday. The sentences are to be served consecutively which means Bowen would serve roughly 1,008 years before being released.
Bowen plead guilty earlier in the month as jury selection for his trial was set to begin. Many of the victims, some of whom are now adults, were in the courtroom when the sentence was announced.

The victims claimed the now 38-year-old evangelist sexually abused them for months or in some cases, years from 2006 to as recently as April 2018.

"I saw myself as damaged goods without realizing I'd been manipulated by a true professional," said one of the victims in a statement submitted during the hearing. The statements also described how Bowen used lavish trips, clothing and money to lure the young men into spending time alone with him.

Bowen spoke publicly for the first time on Friday since his arrest. He apologized to the victims and his family before the sentence was announced. [/b]The former youth minister also admitted to suffering with alcohol, drug abuse and addiction to pornography.[b]

"My heart has never wanted to hurt anyone but my mind is not well," said Bowen during his tear-filled apology.

His attorney's argued the pastor suffered from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result of sexual abuse he suffered as a teenager. Defense witnesses say Bowen revealed the sexual abuse to psychologists while awaiting trial. They noted he suffered some of the same damaging effects of abuse as his victims. They argued this should be a mitigating factor in his sentencing. It was not. Calhoun County Judge Debra Jones handed down the maximum sentence for all 28 charges.

A Catholic priest in Walnutport was removed from ministry after he was seen taking “disturbing” photographs of wrestlers at a high school tournament last month, the Diocese of Allentown announced Sunday.

The Rev. Thomas A. Derzack, 70, pastor of St. Nicholas Parish, took the photos Dec. 27 without the wrestlers’ knowledge during the event at the Bethlehem Catholic High School gym, the diocese said. Using his phone, [/b]Derzack photographed the wrestlers from behind[b] as they were waiting to compete, leading to a complaint by a concerned spectator, the diocese said.

In a prepared statement, Bishop Alfred Schlert said Derzack’s actions violated church standards for acceptable behavior. Derzack was suspended as a precaution while the diocese investigates, and he is also barred from school events and property, the statement said.
