wunmi38: The woman's age is almost definitely the most important factor correlating directly with IVF "success"; even when 'success' is defined only as 'getting pregnant', 80% is quite excessive; the best numbers I've seen hover around 50% per cycle. (This does not mean that the success rate you quoted for your clinic is impossible; this could be dependent definitions... ) But if you do have details of your treatment from this specific clinic, you could share them. . |

Wehnby: 1) It is best that you approach a qualified medical practitioner for opinion regarding your situation; no amount of opinions on the iNet could specifically address this. Yet, there are lots of materials available to help the situation. Low sperm count count could be effectively treated. Many competent IVF practitioners will attempt resolving issue with the man first. 2) Regarding fibroids, "It is generally agreed that the uterine cavity should be clear and relatively normal in configuration prior to IVF." (see: http://www.ivillage.com/fibroids-can-they-affect-ivf-success/6-n-145478); even then: "[d]espite numerous publications and years of research, the relationship between uterine fibroids and infertility is still unsettled. The exact mechanism by which fibroids may affect infertility is not certain and includes: blockage of the fallopian tubes; alterations of tubal motility and prevention of sperm–egg assembly; prevention of proper sperm migration through the cervical canal; dyspareunia; and thin, vascularized endometrium and abnormal uterine peristalsis. Only the last two can directly affect implantation and assisted reproductive technologies (ART)/IVF results." (see: http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/803314) So then, there is hope; neither the fibroids, nor the low sperm count - nor both - imply a totally bleak outlook. My advice is that you should arm yourself with information; this is a hurdle, and be determined to confront it. If both you and your husband are involved in seeking a solution, then it's already much better. |

JallowBah: And you'll certainly find an easy replacement, eh? I'd accept your 'kick him out' statement as mild joke. Of course, the man ought to offer his support; he ought to play his part. But here's the hint of the post you responded to: there're traditional tasks for the woman in the home; all things given, the woman ought to take responsibility for these things; taking responsibility does not always necessarily mean she would have to execute them; but it means that she takes the 'blame' when they're not. My position is that it is important for the woman to financially contribute to the running of the home, and that this means she ought to have income independent of the man. The rest fo the details can be sorted. That means the woman ought to reject any arrangement that would rob her of the means of earning independent income. . |

SewaG.R.I.T.S: All degrees are good :-) But all education and no work experience makes for frustration. If a woman has a degree - or some talent in something, anything - she ought to work at it. It's tough, but it's not impossible to combine this with taking charge of the home and the children. Without the relevant experience, anyone's earnign power is diminished, and any woman unsure of her future and that of her children at any time ought to work. . |
Family / Re: I Need Answers From Married People Only! by Nimshi: 12:47am On Oct 20, 2012 |
A woman should contribute, no matter how litte she earns relative to the man. If you earn more than your husband does, then you should contribute more. And know this as a woman: never, never accept not to work if youære able to work. The first step to amost all forms of abuse is the family is for the woman to stop working; you must not forget that in Nigeria, the man almost always owns everything; you must not make yourself a doormat. . |

Horayce: I'll certainly read Moyo, but when I have a lot of time. And yes, Collier's Bottom Billion was quite a read; he's got a bunch of insightful papers with useful data on his website too. And I agree: Collier's prescription for landlocked countries is excellent; I've considered it a workable solution for a dismembered Nigeria. Who's the Harvard commentator to whom you refer? Diamond; thought-provoking, but the truth's probably less confined. His book is well-researched (and I must confess to not having completed even a first reading of it. . . ), but the one-mindedness of his theory diminishes the book. It is hardly correct that only a single explanation exists for what has been observed; at a point, I was tempted to think he was pandering in an intellectually attractive manner; but his position is seriously considered, yet, the book can be robustly criticised. In any case, a profound contribution to knowledge. I'll check out David Landes and Niall Ferguson . . . The sub-title of Collapse sounds engaging. . . Olufemi Taiwo: to which book do you refer? I own 'How Colonialism Preempted Modernity in Africa', but have yet to read it (that's lazy, because the book that's pushing it off is Achebe's 'There was a country'; I've had to suspend a reading of Jack Miles' 'God: A Biography'. . . to accommodate that), but I suppose you're referring to 'Africa Must be Modern' (or a book of that title by Professor Taiwo - edited: forgive me for not following your post; of course, your Item #9 is precisely this book); I haven't seen the book anywhere online for sale; could you give a hint on where to find it? Neither have I found Soyinka's 'Harmattan Haze'. . . . |

imperiouxx: Hello guys, is it possible for two AS genotype to use this IVF to prevent having SS child(ren)? Thanks The answer is "yes". The PGD (Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis) technique has been around for a while. What happens is that the embyos are screened for the sickle cell trait before being implanted. Also: since the chance of a SS foetus from two AS parents is 25% per birth per single birth, it is statistically more probable that you will have a healthy child, but: know that it is possible to check this before the pregnancy is well along to find out . . . There are also other options . . . . |
Politics / Re: Muslims In Jos Protest Film On Prophet Mohammed by Nimshi: 4:49pm On Sep 14, 2012 |
The theological debate is beside the point. The recent protests underscore why it is always necessary to let Muslims know that: - To non-Muslims, Mohammed, the Prophet is no more than an ordinary man - This opens him to all sorts of insults, ridicule, and abuse - And, being a religious type qualifies him for extreme ridicule For those (including Muslims) who have chosen to live in countries where free speech is protected, Prophet Mohammed is as game for ridicule as anyone else. In today's terms, we would term him as - at least - a one-off paedophile (we recognise that the standards of his day were different, yet, this doesn't remove the fact that he entertained himself with a girl not yet ten years old when he was in his 50s; any self-respecting man of any era ought to know that has an 'icky' factor to it) Mohammed also had some f.oolish and ridiculous ideas, including the nonsense about flying carpets. Does he deserve to be insulted? Perhaps yes. Is it valid to insult him? Yes, of course; who's he? Having inspired a religion of thugs and low lifes who resort to throwing stones, engaging in armed attacks in defence of him, he deserves little respect. Muslims need to get used to this, and especially those Muslims who flew over Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia etc etc to land in the West; you had a choice to stop and settle in those countries, but you didn't. In the United States, it is customary to condemn inciteful speech (like the video) and - and! - also to defend the rights of those who made it. They cannot be compelled not to insult Mohammed. . 2 Likes |

Horayce: interesting list there. Easterly's White Man's Burden is an 'excellent' book. But I wonder if you've also read Dambissa Mayo's books (I haven't, and it appears - from a brief interview I viewed on TV featuring Moyo - Moyo's views aren't very far from Easterly's; but I'd like to read the opinion of one who's read both. Also: is Jared Diamond correct? I recollect feeling Guns, Germs and Steel was the best book I'd read at the time I read it; the felling didn't last very long. Re printed books/ebooks: there're good arguments for both, but I still prefer to manually turn the page; but e-copies offer amazing flexibility; one (expensive) solution is to have both... For now, my 'important' books are printed, the dispensables are e-versions only. Thanks for introducing Olufemi Taiwo. "Harmattan haze on an African spring by Wole Soyinka" - When was this book published? . . |

MyJoe: Watchtower never admits anything. Poor Maximum85 thought they do about their predictions and got himself into trouble with Mr truthislight who has now accused him of misrepresentation. They have paid out millions yet they never admitted anything. This is a cornerstone JW strategy - execute payouts - impose gag orders (this reinforces the JW org as amoral; fight for freedom of speech, but deny it to those you've raped). - admit nothing (this, also, reinforces the JW org as amoral). The most recent case of the award of more the USD 20 million was one exception. Lol. Truthislieisdarkness was mad at the warrior for good reason: the JW org doesn't lie admitting they've been wrong, even f they've predicted the end of the world in 1914, 1925, and 2000; and even though they promised in the 1920s: 'millions now living will never die'; most people then living have now died. And even though they told people in the 60s: 'you will never grow old in this system of things'. We're here in 2012, and our resident militant JWs can't see it. Except for Maximus, who is now being chastised for being somewhat human. . . |

Barristers: one man, barristers; lol. What passes for your brain has been fried by years of JW propaganda. May be Satan the Devil (hehehe) made you a JW to give JWs a really, really bad name; just look at the nonsense oozing from all over you. Barristers: Time registered: July 08, 2012 | Time spent online: 1 day & 12 hours | Last seen: 3:31pm JWs don't take blood or what? Just say JWs don't donate blood. JWs who need human blood products use them all the time; like, a certain Haemoglobin Factor which JWs use ;-) The problem is that JWs like to reap where they've not sown: they deplete the supply but are not allowed to replenish it. Shame on you. That's not moral. It's not even Christian. And, I don't have time to educate you about the years of fornication of the JW organisation with the wild beast. Just like those pictures in your nonsense Revelation Climax (gasp!) book, you JWs rode the wild beast for years, until a journalist published your hypocrisy, and then you quickly dissociated. Here, in all its simple glory is the original article by Stephen Bates which exposed the JW sect for what it is: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2001/oct/08/religion.world And, Hitler: yes, JWs supported Hitler when it was expedient. You want proof too? No, won't be casting pearls before hogs ;-) truthislightisdarkness: why're you turning on warrior Maximus? Don't do that; he's one of you. You can't disfellowship him now! In any case, Yahweh is watching you. He will inform your elders that you're enjoying the secret pleasure of posting on the Internet. What will you do when they announce to your congregation that's you're walking in a 'disorderly manner', or charge you for 'loose conduct'? . . |

BARRISTERS: Is 'barristers' a jw? not yet, but nothing will stop him from joining as he had already allowed his children and wife to join.untill he fully join, he is very free to kick asses of these unholly trio who got nothing to offer humans! - I laugh a laugh of derision. - Why're you in a fir because I use the lowercase for your favourite deity? Ok, no worries, I'll start using the uppercase. I don't think your god/God cares though. If he's that petty, then he's got to be quite small. - You "allowed" your wife to join JWs? So she couldn't have joined the religion without your permission, eh? You're presenting yourself as one fo the problems. It's no problem wiping the floor with men like you. - If your wife is already a JW, you'd better hurry to join; they'll need you; you're already a worthy drone. Or soon, she won't be allowed to say 'Amen' when you pray if you don't join in. As noted, you're already an active JW drone. - And, this your time-wasting activity of gaining more insight into the activities of three posters is funny, really. I laugh again. You must have a lot of time on your hands; that's not a problem; but a grown man as yourself, with children and a wife, applying discoveries on an Internet board? Lol. Well done. - As for the Catholics: they've proved to be better than you JWs in their response to paedophilia; you JWs need to learn something from the Catholic church. - And, since you've inserted H into the conversation: you JWs did support Hitler when your leaders thougth it would offer an advantage. That's a documented fact: documented from your Watchtower literature. Any more? . . |
Religion / Re: One Reason Why Debating With Christians Is More Rewarding Than Muslims by Nimshi: 1:17pm On Aug 28, 2012 |
The challenge for Muslims could be one of many: 1) there're many other sources for Islamic teachings other than the Quran 2) these other sources, including the hadith, and more important, the Sunna, are quite varied, chaotic, and many times unreliable 3) many Muslims just give up, and would rather listen to rousing speeches by Imam or the rector at the local mosque 4) Imams/local mosque rectors are not immune to itme #2) 5) victims of the rote learning of the Quran: being able to quote the Quran in Arabic is usually perceived by other Muslims as sign of high learning; but this is almost completely useless for engaging in discussions where you're not working the crowd 6) it must be admitted: even the Quran isn't an easy book to read: the accounts are not arranged chronoligically, and it is frankly usually a boring read 7) er, hmnn . . . some of the practices are downright nasty and difficult to support (niqab, death for any number of minor infractions, mutilations, hatred for a certain pet animal . . . etc etc). At least Christianity has Jesus, who to some extent reformed the Jewish tribal god, Yahweh; Islam has no equivalent of that; this is a big problem . . . 8') and, well, there's that thing with Sunni & Shia muslims; if the questioner knows about it, then it's already too much of a problem . . . 9) many of the Muslims here are lazy; not ready to do the hard work, and not ready to mount a robust defence of their favourite middle eastern religion of course, there're certainly many more Now: It's surprising that 'cousin marriage' couldn't be discussed/defended . . . Ref #9, perhaps . 1 Like |

Maximus85: There're lots of mistakes and needless assumptions in your post, starting from the first words; people who make f*oolish assumptions provide into a window into how their mind works. Are you people now Jesus, Paul, etc etc? Of course, you are saying you are the most righteous. If the world is under the influence of Satan, then why did you climb in bed with the UN, your 'wild beast' of Revelation? Ah, look: starting from my original post, I'd made it clear that I do not think anything of wiping the floor with posters who clearly present as men and want to lord it over everyone else, includign their favourite targets: women. Your religion deeply despises women; that's clear. Don't expect any reverence here. MyJoe is the moderate one who has a different approach. What you'r epreaching isn't what JEsus and his disciples preached. Your good news is this: 'everyone not a JW will be killed by your god anytime soon, so join our little group so you can be safe'; isn't that it? It's not good news; it's nonsense. JWs are different partly because they are deluded; and partly because years of indoctrination would have fried your brains. This is the clear mark of irrationality: youwill accept whatever your masters in Brooklyn publish in the Watchtower as truth; that's supreme mental slavery. Give it a thought. You don't study the bible: you say whatever Brooklyn says to say, inlcuding reading from your nonReasoning from the Scriptures in response to questions over your heads. You have a persecution complex about this Satan fellow. How many of you people? Seven million or so, supported, presumably by angels, eh? And Satan's been running ropes around you for how long? You can't even keep the children of JWs in, with your retention rates lower than 40%; then you attack poor, uninformed people in third world countries; plus, your congregations are safe havens for paedophiles. So, how many JWs have been killed for being JWs in recent times? You keep talking of Peter, Stephen, Jesus, etc etc; what do these people have to do with your little American religion? You're not even witnesses of Jesus; you're witnesses of Yahweh, the tribal Hebrew god/God. . |

truthislight: @nimshi Do you also have an arithmetic impediment? I wrote '<10,000', meaning - oh, dear, must I explain this?! - 'less than 10,000' Isn't that correct for the number of the 'remnant' your religion claims remains of the 144,000? Years of Watchtower indoctrination appears to have stagnated your reasoning. This is a sorry thing. . |

BARRISTERS, you're a joke. Who cares if you're a JW or not? You're an embarrassment to the human species. But you may have a childlike sense of humour, eh; I don't know of Ola & MyJoe, but I'm trilled to be part of that Trinity ;-) But you, you have your head firmly implanted in your rectum: your front end and rear are a duality unto yourself; congratulations (I must not go wash my fingers after typing that). . . I have noticed MyJoe - whom I have fiercely disagreed with on this thread - is a very patient human; and even MyJoe says you're irredeemable, it's time to wipe the floor with you. When your elders find you're having these conversations on the Internet, you'll be hurled into the backroom and thoroughly chastised, after which you will 'repent' in ashes and shame. Really, do you think you're free? You're not. but that's your choice; the problem is that you mislead people. And you have rather poor reasoning skills. And, your manner of cut/paste with others' words tell you've learned very well from your WT masters. Well done. Your masters will reward you ;-) . |
Religion / Re: I Left Jehovah's Witnesses After 28 Years - Gordon Cook by Nimshi: 8:38am On Aug 27, 2012 |
frosbel: Incidentally: - the founder of the JW religion started out by calling organised religion a fraud - the JWs held on to that belief until they became big - and then it became compulsory to attend up to 5 different 'meetings' (indoctrination classes) every week - ordinary JWs are not allowed to gather together on their own, by their choice - they are not also allowed to study the bible independently: they must use Watchtower materials - any interpretation not sanctioned by the leaders is 'demonic', and means apostasy; JWs who do this can be expelled & shunned - the JW leaders today claim ordinary JWs do not have Jesus as mediator to God (the leaders are the mediators) - for other special JWs (those that will go to heaven, < 10,000), Jesus is their mediator - this means, essentially that: all ordinary JWs are subservient to the leaders; the leaders at the same time claim to be invisible - and because the leaders claim they are "God's mouthpiece", or "God's only channel" to earth today, ordinary JWs are 'trapped' - JWs don't excplain these things to their new recruits; most recruits find out when it is too late . |

truthislight: MyJoe: your patience is commendable. truthislight: I think it wouldn't be rude to say this: you arrive at conclusions you know nothing about. Now, many of us do that, but some are able to slam the breaks on it ans realise they may have been wrong. But you, hmnn . . . You mistake criticism - even scathing criticism - for something else. Calling Jehovah/Yahweh the tribal god of the Jews, for example, drives you into a fit. I tell you: do you think calling the deity you call Jehovah/Yahweh a tribal god of the Jews, or noting that he - as presented in the 'old' testament - was particularly efficient at killing people he didn't like (children, women, etc etc), for instance somehow means Yahweh/Jehovah will like me less than you because you pick a bag and go to people's houses? You're making a mistake. But I'll give you this: you may be correct in the above that I may not believe in the same God as Ola (I have no clear view of Ola's god/God); but how could anyone take you serious when you conclude that Ola & are are doing the work of our 'master'? You're only reiterating the victimhood that's been part of your dehumanisation* by the Watchtower Society. I will now recall that great debate in the bible, between Job and his brilliant interlocutors: if you must bring a case in support of God, you must also be truthful. It is truthful to describe Yahweh/Jehovah as the tribal god of the Jews; just as it is truthful to write that he allowed genocide and infanticide; and that he is sometimes prone to impulse actions with disastrous consequences, and that he is sometimes rash; in his favour: he has demonstrated a willingness to listen to human reasoning and change his behaviour: you JWs, and many Christians, I must say, miss this last trait. Those who know Yahweh/Jehovah, know it, and they use that knowledge well. Unfortunately, your leaders in Brooklyn have programmed you not to think that way. Sorry; but I'll be watching how your drooling becomes an irreversible embarrassment for you and your faith. . |

mbulela: Thanks. I haven't ever heard of Zakes Mda; but now I could say I have; more than 500 pages; I'll make a note and may be wait for the paperback. The only South African I'd read is J. M. Coetzee, but since we're talking non-fiction, his books: 'Stranger Shores' (book of 29 of his essays from 1986 - 1999; read partially, but a fascinating tour of the writer's depth), and here, Coetzee (if memory serves) sides with Soyinka - if less militantly - against Ali Mazrui's portrayal of Africa and Africans in Mazrui's 'The Africans'. And perhaps 'The Lives of Animals' may qualify as non-fiction being a moral argument based on a fictional background. I'd say if we admit Soyinka's autobiographical works as 'non-fiction', then this one too should qualify. Coetzee presents as a sensitive writer: careful, stingy with words, and brutal in succinct delivery. I would hope to read something new from Zakes Mda. Thanks! naijababe: thanks for the tip. Ajanlekoko: I'm looking for one for keeps; the copy I'd encountered and partially read couldn't be kept. The Man Died is out of print, and it's a surprise the opportunities of a reprint haven't been seized; Soyinka doesn't need the money, I'd guess. And I'm guessing we'll have to wait a long long long time for the book to become available. . . |

naijababe: Ajanlekoko/naijababe: where could one get "The Man Died"? Quite rare. naijababe: "This House has Fallen" was almost a good read . . . going by the narrative, I'd formed a few opinions, perhaps, if there's a lot of time this could inspire a discussion: Maier writes well, but his account of Nigerian history is somewhat skewed; he doesn't appear to acknowledge the damage done by his own ancestors. Unfortunately, his book is in many ways of the same quality as other efforts by journalists and such types who attempt to write on serious subjects like science, history, etc etc The book also appears to have been written in a hurry: there are 'mistakes' in some of the things I know, so I wonder about the things in the book that I didn't know about; there're also many needless repetitions . . . . |

Most posters aren't posting African authors; I am having a renewed interest in African authors and hope you'd write some more about these two books. First, Adebanwi: A paradise for maggots - I can't find this book on amazon.co.uk, neither at amazon.com; any leads? Second: Wole Soyinka 'Interventions 1 & 2' - couldn't find this either; where could one get it? I find biographies sometimes tedious; a poster above wrote of Bill Clinton's 'My Life'; couldn't get far with this bulky book; perhaps it's just that some familiarity with the subject robs of the enjoyment of reading it. Soyinka's biographies are different though; he explains why . . . But if you have any recommendations, be kind to drop them here . |

You're not communicating; 'jargon' has no place there (3) The '2nd thought' you suggest is actually quite low (to be polite; I could try to explain this, but when I have a lot of time); we must write so as not to be misunderstood; there were less than three sentences in the post, and, it appears you're the one attempting to 'compensate' for something; here's why: rather than comment on the main topic, and/or on the substance of that poster's quest for personal information, you're wasting your talent on meaningless speculation and useless attacks. (4) Have you considered that this poster may not be 'trying to sound smart' at all? Have you considered that your certainty on this may tell much about you? Have you considered that you may be betraying your own inner thoughts? (5) Why not share your thoughts about those books you've read rather than wasting your talent on personal attacks? . 1 Like |

Where's the jargon? - no specialised words - apparently, what's there is not meaningless - it appears understandable - there's nothing vague Ref: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/jargon?s=t And how could this possibly 'backfire'? Anything to contribute to the topic of discussion? These personal enquiries could be moved off-the-board; this thread is interesting to the contributors, no need to attempt to derail it. . |

Debonnaire does not have these books in stock - You could find them at www.amazon.co.uk or at www.amazon.com obowunmi: Ok- you are getting over analytical here pumpkin. I enjoyed reading your review of the books. So wondered if your 1. M or F. 2. If ur married. Ok; I didn't think there was any analysis there . . . And, hmnn . . . are you a real man? I would find your approach rather not quite polished - if you'll pardon my almost-French . . . But, not one to ignore even a mild compliment . . . yes, thank you for enjoying the 'review(s)'. . |
