SARS protest cannot fly in the SE because we have been suffering police brutality for decades and now we are used to it. The rest of the country started feeling it just few years ago. I remember years ago when they found 35 dead bodies of young men floating in Ezu river in Anambra state. They were killed by SARS and the rest of the country barely blinked. Those who spoke about it mocked the dead and said they were MASSOB members.

It was the same thing when the whole country was doing subsidy protests in 2012 and the SE didn't care because fuel had been selling for double the cost in the rest of the country.

Set up a Commission of Inquiry on Emene shooting

Following media reports of the violent face-off between security agencies and members of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leading to death of unarmed civilians and security agents, I contacted senior security officers and lawyers of IPOB.

In my interaction with the security agencies facts emerged that the State Department lost two officers and automatic rifles during the fracas while two members of IPOB were killed and about five injured. As at the time of our conversation 5 members of IPOB were in Police custody. I requested the Police to grant them bail or charge them to court.

In my discussion with IPOB lawyers it emerged that the members were meeting peacefully and did not constitute any threat to public peace when some security agents infiltrated their meeting leading to the fracas. I condole with all those who lost their lives and ask the government of Enugu state to institute a commission of Inquiry to ascertain the truth around the incident that led to the death of unarmed civilians and security agents.
Security agencies must continue to respect fundamental right of peaceful assembly in a democracy and be guided by rules of engagement in dealing with unarmed civilians. Use of force in delicate situations is a by product of the militarization of our society and must be avoided.

It is also important that the identity of those who killed the security agents and took their guns are ascertained to be sure that criminal elements did not cash in on the mayhem. I condemn the use of violence by any group whether security agents or private groups. I will continue to engage with all sides for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. I commend current efforts to de-escalate the tension. IPOB representatives assure me that they remain a non violent organization.

Many Nigerians ran back to their Regions due to the violence OPC brought. Yet, OPC was never declared terrorists and their activities did not prevent a Yoruba man called Obasanjo being elected president in 1999. Infact, the OPC leader is now the highest titled man in Yoruba land.

Despite the fact that armed Fulani herdsmen are killing people in virtually every state in Nigeria, they have not been declared terrorists, and a Fulani man called Buhari was elected President in 2015 and re-elected in 2019

IPOB is an unarmed group that has not done up to 1% of what OPC and herdsmen have done, but were declared terrorists. If any thing, IPOBs problem has always been the heavy handed use of force by the security agents that causes clash between the two

So if OPC did not deprive Yorubas of any economic or political advantage, or getting Obasanjo elected

If Fulani killer herdsmen did not prevent a Fulani men like Buhari and Yaradua from being elected President

Then how is IPOB damaging Igbos when others that were far worse than IPOB did not damage their people?

The IBOs did more than this before 1998 PDP Presidential primary which took place in Jos. Despite lack of Internet and Social media, the attacks of IBOs against Obasanjo was enormous, acidic and the highest in the history of primary elections till date. The vendetta against Obasanjo was much just because he was contesting against Alex Ekwueme. They wanted him disqualified or withdrawn by assault which was not possible. They ended up creating more enemies for Alex Ekwueme.
