zaynie: This is another good one. Only NEPA is sure to ruin our TV time NEPA ruining the TV time is an added bonus because they will be forced to go and read. They might not necessary read class text especially during the holidays. That was why i went to get them those classic old novels. Iam now under serious pressure by them now to go and get the other 20 that they have compiled from the earlier ones they read. Na me come dey dodge now as the books are difficult to get. I even had to go to CSS bookshop one time but could not get them. |

Been so bummed this holiday as they are not even interested in my reading to them. They both started reading properly at 3 yrs and they have compulsory reading club in school. What more can I do? They must love reading, it's non negotiable. Use carrot and stick or use blackmail. Tell them that for them to watch their favourite cartoons, they have to read a book from 10am-12noon or a time you think is suitable and after that they can watch TV/DSTV. See below the time table i once drew for my kids. You fit no mind me sha. I went to boarding house. So i was trying to practice the strict rules and regulations i was taught there. blank: How do I get my kids to love reading? I used to be an avid reader, right from my nursery school. My parents did nada to encourage it until I was much older but I enjoyed reading. Now, I have a nice library of kid's books that they won't read. Said it's make believe and thus not worth the effort but is ready to watch make believe cartoons for as long as they can.
It's really eating me up as I know the importance. I try to read to them but he said he has outgrown that. Do not really know when you went to secondary school. Most of the reading books in this era are nothing to write home about. When i wanted to get my kids to read, i went for most of the books that were written in the 80s and early 90s. Those books were well structured and well written. I have a library of books for my kids that contain books like Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God, Tales out of School, One week one trouble, Eze goes to school, the lion and the jewel, chike and the river, no longer at ease, the beautiful ones are not yet born, animal farm, the gods are not blame. I have already compiled another twenty sets from the same era that i intend to buy such as: more tales out of school, trouble in form six, the three musketeers, adventures of tom samyer, eze goes to college, the african night entertainment, oliver twist, lamb tales from Shakespeare. These are the type of books that i believe simulates and develops the child brain. Some of these books have a glossary of vocabulary that the child can easily know the meanings. |

I agree with you. I also believe that some kids are special and can do a lot if given the right kind of push. You see child prodigies don't become so overnight, it takes the capability of the child, parent and teacher. I don't push or force kids to learn ( except my own child) , in fact I use the play method to teach. If your child shows the tendency for something, as a parent you should encourage it. Your child likes kicking things upandan? Get him a ball, coach him or fix him in a football academy. You 2 year is pretending to read a book....albeit upside down, right the book up, point to each word as you read. Your one year old loves to scribble, fix a crayon right on grip and let her colour all she wants.
My 4 year old can't read yet but he is a Math genius, will fix puzzles, is good at memory games and has the vocabulary of an average adult. He can also throw a nice kick and lands a solid punch, he learnt from watching Kungfu Panda and then we made necessary corrections.
A gentle push in the right direction won't hurt. Especially if the child loves it. I once had a 4 year old in my class;Grade 1 he would bury his head in a book and read and read and read. He was my best student that year amidst plenty 5 and 6 year olds. @zaynie. Good one. I noticed the hotness in maths and hotness in spellings in my son. So i guided him accordingly. He is not that good in local languages(igbo, yoruba) but very good in French. He can speak English very well and spell any word but when it comes to writing exams in English, he is just above average which iam not really worried about because my intentions right from the beginning has been mathematics and the sciences. I was not also good in written English exam myself but can spell almost any word and construct sentences very well. . In the final analysis, parents should watch and pay attention to their kids and know what they are good and encourage and guide them accordingly. |

Zheemub: Lol. Thanks My son did not start school until he was 3 years old. He was born in September. When some of my friend's kids that he was senior to started school, my wife was harassing me that i should send him saying that those he is senior to had started but i refused. I told her that i want his brain to develop first before starting at age 3. When he was 3, i took him to the school i wanted and he was given a test and they said that he cannot draw, he cannot paint and so on and so forth and because of that they will put him in KG 2. I refused telling them that age 3 is Nursery one and that i left him at home till he was 3 in order for him to develop his brain. When they were refusing to budge, i threatened to take him to another school that will accept him in nursery 1 at age 3 which is the right age for nursery one and then i will being him back to them when he is about to enter primary 1 at age 5. They caved in and grudgly took him saying that they doubt if he will cope and i just laugh and said that i was ready to bet with them that he will cope. He passed all the catholic schools entrance examination he did last year. He is now in JSS 2 in boarding house and he is doing very well. Those that i said started before him then are now in JSS 1. My principle has always been to develop the child's brain to maturity instead of rushing the child. |

eyinjuege: Look, no one is saying don't take care of your children. However, don't see them as an investment.
Try to provide the best you can afford for your children to give them a headway in life because you love them, and not because you see them as cash cows. You choose to have them. A good child will take care of you in your old age, I'm an advocate of that, but that doesn't always happen like I've repeatedly said in all my posts. Who also told you that an "investment" cannot be wiped out in 5 seconds? We see a lot of young chaps dying everyday, that's just life. Everyone prays to eat the fruit of their labor, but it shouldn't stop you from planning for your future. If you're earning 30K now, you should continue to make efforts to increase your earning power. Retirement plans/preps isn't always about cash, but putting things in place that'll generate money for you in your old age. It could be properties, it could be some business of your own or you can just continue working in your old age. Do whatever works for you. I hope you know that it is not only in the cities that people live and i hope you know that there are no old people's homes in the villages. So an 80-year old farmer who has never moved more than 5km from his village should invest in properties or business in the village abi?. Who rents a property in the village?. Abi, make the farmer re-locate to any of the big cities to come and invest in properties?. As i have said, this is Nigeria and Africa to a wider extent. Our ways of life is different from that of oyibo as iam sure that you do not live in Nigeria. Btw, depending on your kids at old age is taken as an option B and not an option A because investments can fail and when that happens, you fall back on the option B. Who told you that at old age, you need so much to live?. How much an 80-year old man wan chop?. |

eyinjuege: Its your responsibility to take care of any child you bring into the world. You're only doing what you should do, and not an investment. Even without a child, does that still make your retirement a reality on 18K? I've said it, prepare to work in your old age, if you cannot make enough money now that you're young. That's the simple solution for low income earners. It is just what it is. Do not worry. The way of life in Africa is different from the way of life in obodo oyibo. Iam sure that you are not living in Nigeria. In Africa, children are taken as investments. That is why you see a security guard starving himself to give his children an education so that they will also not end up as security guards and those children most times do not forget. Btw, not all investments pay dividends at the end of the day. So, it will not be a surprise if the child refuses to pay 'dividends' to the father at old age. Who told you that your well planned retirement money cannot be wiped out within seconds?. |
Family › Re: Why Do Nigerian Wives Nurse A Presumption Of Meanness From Their Mother-in-laws? by NL1960: 5:08pm On Dec 13, 2016 |
eyinjuege: Like I said earlier, prepare to continue working in your old age if you have no retirement plans. I also said you should try and stay healthy- (stop smoking, exercise, eat more fruits and vegetables instead of rice rice rice., reduce your portions ) so that you can continue working into your old age.
Drawing a budget for a man who's wife isn't working and family income of 30K- stay in face me I slap you in an area of town that's not expensive, prolly outskirts, look for people who have cars that can be dropping you along the way on your way to work to reduced transport costs, child is put in public school, the wife should be creative about feeding- start buying "esha" tomatoes/pepper (crushed tomatoes), look for cheaper sources of protein- soya beans etc. It's gonna be difficult, but when/if things get better, you upgrade your home, your child's school. I mentioned earlier about irresponsible children who don't take care of their aged parents despite having all the money to do so. That's why a parent should have a back up plan for retirement and not put all hopes on their children. They may be too engrossed in their own lives to remember anyone else. Let us assume the wife is also working like the man and they are both earning the minimum wage of 18k each. So, what retirement plans can be done from that?. Theory is different from practicals. It is better to invest in the child even though it is not a guarantee of the child helping you out at old age. |
Family › Re: Why Do Nigerian Wives Nurse A Presumption Of Meanness From Their Mother-in-laws? by NL1960: 2:23pm On Dec 13, 2016 |
eyinjuege: I understand you perfectly well. However, its wise to always cut your coat according to your cloth. Meanwhile, it is your responsibility as a parent to ensure your child goes to school, is fed, and has a roof over his head. I'm referring to under aged children here, otherwise give them up for adoption if you can't take care of them. Primary and secondary school should be a must. Always remember that not all investments pay off.
Take care of your child because you love them, and want the best for them by giving them a headway in life and not because you see them as a meal ticket for the future.
Children are a gift, but if you don't prepare for your old age and expect the heavens from your child you may be seriously disappointed. Some children really want to take care of their parents, but cannot even afford to take care of themselves. We have graduates earning 30K. How is that kind of person expected to take care of his parents, his own children? So many jobless graduates roaming the streets. How do those ones take care of anybody? Let's be realistic, and not deceive ourselves. Don't raise children with the unshakeable hope of depending on them in old age.
Be ready to work throughout your old age if you don't have retirement plans in place.
Best bet, start living a healthier lifestyle now so you're not brought down by preventable diseases in old age so you can continue working your ass off. Meanwhile, at least start working on building your own house even if its in an undeveloped area or in your village, start your own garden in your backyard. Grow vegetables, and other crops that you can consume. A child who's responsible will take care of his parents if he can afford to. We still have some irresponsible children who have the means, but do not bother to remember their parents. You are now coming to my point. A graduate earning 30k and you want the graduate to plan for his retirement. How?. For your information, it is what you have left after taking care of your kids that you can give your parents. How much do you even think parents need in their old age to survive?. You think it is millions?. Have you not seen children that use the latest iPhone, buys for their side chicks and when their parents ask for 5k to survive, they say that there is no money. Let us use your 30k as an example, can you tell us how to spend that for a family of three(father, mother, a child) and then have a left-over for retirement planning. Do not tell me that the man should opt for zero(0) kids by giving up the only one he has for adoption. |
Family › Re: Why Do Nigerian Wives Nurse A Presumption Of Meanness From Their Mother-in-laws? by NL1960: 9:30am On Dec 13, 2016 |
eyinjuege: Everyone should stay on their lane. Its a no no for couples to live with their in-laws unless its unavoidable. There will always be friction. If you're lucky, both spouse and your mum won't be people that hold grudges. Because its normal for them to step on each others toes. A matured mother will learn how to overlook her DILs idiosyncrasies, because if it were her child, she won't throw her to the dogs. But not all MILs are matured. A decent DIL won't always look for trouble, and would also learn to overlook mamas wahala. At least some women also have difficult mothers. This is bearable if they don't live together, and don't see themselves finish. Otherwise its Fuji house of commotion reloaded. I'm sure very few men like interfering in-laws, so also women. Everyone needs their space. My advice to parents is to plan for their retirement even while trying to raise your children. Its usually easier to not be so interfering in your child's life when you're not dependent on them for feeding. Its not all children that'll remember their parents in their old age. Sad ,but true. This may be due to their own immediate family pressures and responsibilities or simply because you raised an irresponsible child. I want to believe that you do not live in Nigeria. In Africa, because of poverty and lack of government support, training a child is seen as an investment for old age. I hope you know what the current recession is doing to the pockets of some parents with so many job losses and high inflation. In such a situation, how do you plan for your retirement?. If you have a choice of paying for your retirement and paying the school fees of your child, which will you go for?. Let me give you a simple example: Initially, a father could buy a bag of 50kg rice for 10k and pay some 5k into his retirement savings account. Now a bag of the same 50kg rice is 20k. If na you, wetin you go?. Will you go and buy a 25kg bag now for 10k because you still want to pay 5k into your retirement savings account?. |

lastpage: Sir, I think it is getting absurd, to the point that its not making sense. I also think we should allow the Court to decide on Brabus case, just as Chekitaut has suggested; It may turn out to be an embarrassment of sort, to many here, if Brabus is declared innocent of this particular allegation of STEALING #5M, by the law courts (It still does not exonerate him from the shoddy work he has done for some of his past clients).
As to these scallywags and Yahoo-hustlers gallivanting up and down, l think we should just ignore them and let them keep showing their level.
I just saw Mavericks house now and l fainted! When l woke up, l saw the decking of that dirty, malnourished thing and l collapsed! I hope they are happy now or do they want another round of fainting so that we can know that they are trying to build a house? "The race that the Dog ran for 20yrs, is a walk in the pack for the Horse"
Commonsense101, Fastshipping and others, please Ignore them, they are not worth replying to (l understand that once in a while, you may just want to "relax" and throw a jibe at the scallywags but that is all it should take). Shameless people like these Kids have no credibility online and n real life so, not worth the effort.
BTW: The "major" Problem with Brabus is that he took DIY too far! Its one thing to be a DIY enthusiast, its another thing to turn it to a profession, when you are not "properly grounded and trained" in that profession... its even worse when you take on "challenges" that are way bigger than your skill-set (like QC-1's house) and not have the sense (or is it due to greed?) to liaise and consult with those who have the training and experience in that profession. To make matter worse, he is over-confident, does not listen to good advice and not remorseful.
I hope his current travails will teach him a lesson or two about life: There is a day of reckoning, in the least expected situations (though l will err on the side of caution that he did not steal #5M as alleged, he probably given money for job which was not properly done (as usual) but by the very definition of "stealing", you cannot steal what was given to you by the owner!
People need to read that "charge sheet" again and you will wonder if that Sup. of Police IPO was, by omission or commission, made nonsense of this case, with the charges he filed? Seriously?
It it were me, l will dock him for IMPERSONATION (claiming to be a professional builder when you dont have the requisite qualification from any known Building School), then l will add "MISREPRESENTATION" to the charge (parading yourself as a Builder when you are not registered with the Nigerian Guild of Builders or NSE/COREN), finally, l will charge him for NEGLIGENCE/DERELICTION of DUTY and BREACH of CONTRACT (Non performance/poor performance of agreed contract). All these charges will stick far easier, as they are very much obvious and the bar of proof wont be that high, than to charge him for stealing #5M (maybe he burgled the man's wardrobe at 2am sha) when you most likely have a "business dealing" with him.
What if he just showed the judge that you paid him #5M "for a service"? That alone collapses the trial of the "offence of stealing"!
I dont even want to discuss his issue here as l dont usually "flow with the mob" because l look at issues objectively, with a legal perspective.
Lastpage! BTW: The "major" Problem with Brabus is that he took DIY too far! By this time last year, I told my dad I wanted to study computer science in the university of Ibadan, my dad asked me "is something wrong with you?" I was shocked on hearing his answer. I come from a family of doctors, my mum, dad and my two sisters are all doctors and my dad was expecting me to follow the trend which I don't want to. I said "last last he won't follow me to register" in my mind. the next day, I saw my teacher in my house saying my dad called him for my jamb registration, I was in tears as I saw my form with my dad filled already with medicine and surgery written there. I did my registration and decided that when it's time for jamb. I'll plan to score 220-240.. fast forward to 2016, the time for my jamb examination came, i wrote it and was expecting nothing higher than 240.. I saw my result.. 276.. I was saying this is not my score.. my classmates thought I was being greedy and selfish.. only my best friend knew what was happening.. i made up my mind to fail the post ume.. then the minister of education, dropped it on our heads.. no post ume.. admission was based on a combination of jamb and waec scores. my jamb score was a good one, my waec was glorious.. 4 A's and a C in my required 5 subjects.. I was devastated.. fast forward to everything, I got admitted for medicine and now I'm thinking of rewriting jamb but my mind is at a crossroad.. who do I please? my dad or myself? insults and advices are allowed. thank you. This is a real tough one for you. Iam surprised that your father is pushing you to become a Doctor that you are not interested in becoming after having two daughters (your two sisters) already as Doctors. If you have somebody that your father respects, go and tell the person so that he can talk to your father on your behalf. Computer science is not a bad course. |

mufutau55: You are better with something better so when you decide to put some load on it, it will not deem. I have the one below and it was purchased for N140k before the rise in prices due to forex started. I use it in my BQ, but my friend who had the same uses his own in a 5 Bedrooms Duplex with lights loaded and two AC of 1HP going does nothing to the performance of it. The fuel consumption is very good and lasted more than 14hrs none-stop on a full tank and very, very silent. My said friend love it so much and even bought the 10kva of the same. Very quiet with infrared remote control going thru the wall and distance. Although I intend to buy a standalone 20KVa, this little gem will still be my good backup when that happens. But for now this is a good unit. I have recommended same to some Nairalanders here and they also love it; may be they will see this and testify to it. I think it's around N160k now, but not sure. If you are interested, I can find the dealer info and post it here later.

bugativeron: I am trying to shop for a secondary school for 2017/18 session for my daughter. The choice of school for me would have been Vivian Fowler girls school in Oregun Lagos. However, I wouldn't want my son to be separated from his sister in terms of secondary sch, for that Vivian Fowler is out. But I have been hearing about air force secs schs, But I am interested in Air force sec in Ikeja, Lagos. Pls who has information to share about quality of teaching and environment? cheers You said that you do not want your son to be separated from his sister in terms of secondary. Is your son already in secondary school?. If not, you can start looking at the Catholic secondary schools. Some are co-ed while others are boys only and have a girls only close by. |

KingRex1: Yeah u right.. what I see on those scripts is meant for a pry1class. But what do you do when a pry5 pupil has no incline on how to go about it? You can only try bringing em up to speed, having hope and giving em hope. Problem is that some teachers give up on these kinda kids. The question is how did this pupil get promotion from Primary 1 all through to Primary 5?. This shows you the terrible state of our education especially in the North. Schools now do mass promotion to the next class for even those that failed. Imagine if this same pupil now enters secondary school. Do you think the teacher will want to stunt the learning speed of others because of a person like this?. |

KingRex1: You need to have serious patience while dealing with these students.. First of all, make them very comfortable around you and get them gifts as well..
Used this method while at a service program in a destitute empowerment home.. I was even shocked at their improvements. Ofcus there would be slower learners, but they were my best friends Good advice but i do not really think this should be the syllabus of primary 5 pupils. Should that topic be the topic for primary 5 or primary 3 or 4?. If Primary 5 is being taught this, then what is being taught primary 3 - primary 4?. Education is really down in the North. I can now see why many of them score low in the Unity schools exam and in WAEC and NECO. I was going through a past maths common entrance question paper of one of the catholic secondary schools and i was surprised to see a question on conversion of base 10 to base 2 and conversion on base 2 to base 10. You see also see questions on irregular shapes. If a primary 5 pupil cannot solve a simple ThousandHundredTensUnit question, how will the pupil be able to solve what i have just said. |
