EducationRe: Mathematicians!!! Please Contribute To This Question by NL1960: 5:43pm On Nov 23, 2016
dejt4u:
sum of the first ten terms of an AP is 15;
S10 = 15;
Remember, sum of nth term
Sn = n/2 [2a + (n-1)d]
Then, S10 = 10/2 (2a + 9d)
but S10 = 15,
therefore, 10/2 (2a + 9d) = 15,
5(2a+9d) = 15,
2a + 9d = 15/5
2a + 9d = 3.............equation (i)

the sum of the next ten terms is 215:
this means that S20 - S10 = 215,
make S20 the subject of the formula,
S20 = 215 + S10
but r'mber that S10 = 15,
therefore,
S20 = 215 + 15,
S20 = 230,
again, sum of nth term
Sn = n/2 [2a + (n-1)d]
Then, S20 = 20/2 (2a + 19d) and Recall that S20 = 230,
so, 20/2 (2a + 19d) = 230,
10(2a + 19d) = 230,
2a + 19d = 23............equation (ii)

now combine eqn (i) and eqn (ii) together and solve for a and d simultaneously..

2a + 9d = 3.............eqn (i)
2a + 19d = 23............eqn (ii)

elimination method; eqn (ii) minus eqn (i),
0 + 10d = 20,
d = 20/10,
d = 2

subtitute for the value of d in eqn (i)
2a + 9d = 3.............eqn (i)
2a = 3 - 9d,
2a = 3 - 9(2),
2a = 3 - 18,
2a = -15,
a = -15/2,
a = -7.5

now a = -7.5 and d = 2..

The question; whats the sum of it 28th term?
S28 = ?
But sum of nth term
Sn = n/2 [2a + (n-1)d]
Then, S28 = 28/2 (2a + 27d),
S28 = 14 (2(-7.5) + 27(2)),
S28 = 14 (-15 + 54),
S28 = 14 (39)
S28 = 546 ......QED
Chai, this brings back fond memories of Additional Mathematics popularly called 'Addico' (now called Further Mathematics) of those days when only hot brains could hold the red coloured Additional Mathematics textbook. cool.

Are you for real ? Cars to come and oppress fellow renters ?
So what was he expecting, for others to come and prostrate for him ?. The mentality that some Nigerians sometimes have is the reason for the lack of development in the wider society, but rather they blame all thier woes on APC and Buhari grin grin

Is it a wise move to stipulate in a tenancy agreement that no flat must park more than 2 vehicles ? Oya Madam Gabby, Abeg give us your wise perspective.
Very terrible. Some people have a poverty mentality. You need to see as this guy struggles for space. He might hear you coming into the compound and he will not come out to say that he wants to go out. Once you are inside your flat, you then hear his car horn signaling that he wants to go out. Sometimes you just need to ignore some people especially if they are coming from a place where they were Lords and were being worshiped and they are now in a place where they are on the same level with others.

There was a story of a colleague of mine in their compound. One tenant there was a business man. He will bring in 4 cars and packed them in the compound leaving no space for the man that works in an office and who normally come late in the evening to pack. The man will not come out even if you horn forever or knock on his door. One day, the office worker just block the gate in the morning with his car and traveled for a week to another state. The business could not drive out any of the cars and those that came to buy them could not test drive them because the gate has been blocked. That was the last day the man ever tried such a thing.

The compound may not contain all eight cars, but if we try to accommodate every car inside every house in Nigeria, e go hard for some landlords. Many tenants also don't have cars, especially smaller families. This build is targeted at the younger renters, bachelors and spinsters.

Thank you Bro.
Congrats on the new project.

This your argument on cars might not fly. It might interest you to know that it is younger renters, bachelors and spinsters that buys cars very early. The likelihood of all 8 younger renters, bachelors and spinsters having a car is very high. This means that there will be constant quarrels and fights and you will have to be coming to the place to settle the fights. I live in a six flats compound that can pack more than 8 cars. There is one guy that started trying to oppress everybody of recent. he will just come and arrogantly pack 4 cars in the compound. Luckily, most people do not have two cars. Even one guy that has one car will just jejely pack it on the street. When he saw that nobody was paying attention to him, three of the cars suddenly disappeared. Some people are just trouble makers.

My dear, go and learn one artisan work somewhere or how to trade if you plan on schooling in Nigeria. I know the feeling of wanting to enter school and all. Who school epp. For those of us that studied engineering, many of us aren't even using such useless certificates.

Only if I had learnt different skills, I won't even regret going to school.
A boy wanted to skip school to go and learn a trade telling his father that he wants to do that because there are no jobs. The father now replied him 'what if there are jobs in the future, what will you now do'. The boy then went to school and as he was finishing, what he studied was in huge demand and the guy had several offers that he was confused on which to choose. Go and check what India makes from software. What they make from software is more than what Nigeria makes from crude oil. The developers went to school. They are not traders or artisans.

Btw, have you seen how shops by traders are closing down daily while the likes of Shoprite is expanding with opening of more shops?.

Do you actually believe that Republican will mind their business and not be in the affairs of other countries? please look up the defense companies's stock today. That will give you the answer. Most of the war US is in today was started under a republican regime. That how they divert our money into their private pocket, through wars. They invest in Weapons and defense companies. Then they start war and spend billions that will return back into their pockets by the way of their pre set invest vehicle. Dansuki were trying to copy them under Jona.... Start a war, share the budget funds and nobody will care!
Republicans always fight a war. When Democrats are in charge, the defense companies suffer and they start angling for a Republican so that they can sell their weapons. I would not be surprised if Trump was bankrolled by defense companies.

Mykellio:
Now, these are the calibre of intelligent, salient and highly sapient questions I like to answer. Thanks for engaging us in this manner which shows indeed that you are homo sapiens.

The prices you mentioned were the exact figures we sold our rice between November to February last year. By May we had to start refunding some people's money even at the rate of N13,500 per bag. If such people are reading this they are free to bear me witness.

The CBN, Ministry of Agric and other government parastatals are quick to make lofty and laudable declarations with little or no action to match. Government doesn't plant rice hence are not in any position to make declarations concerning price of rice. Such declarations have been ignorantly made about regulating the price of a currency that we are not printing.

Yes, the dollar has a price. The dollar is a commodity albeit not consumable but fungible. It is a means of exchange as well. And as a licensed exporter and attractor of forex we are in a position of authority to speak. You cannot regulate what you don't produce.

We are the ones who see the plight of farmers. Please read my article: https://www.nairaland.com/3407489/better-late-than-never-saving

Farmers are going through hell. Inputs namely technical, mechanical and capital have now become very costly. Even the lease of small handheld machinery for planting and harvest have become unaffordable to our farmers. We have to wade in financially in several instances through out the season. Yet, some are flaunting ostentatious lifestyles and nauseous opulence all over the social media. All you need is a trip to some of these places.

As processors too, we are not finding it funny. Transport is becoming very strangulating. Cost per 50kg bag of rice to any part of Nigeria is almost N2,000. Consult the transport companies and find out.

It is our fervent hope that, things will get better as we buy Nigerian to grow Nigeria.

Thank you.
Good insights.

When CBN increased the MPR sometimes ago, i told somebody that if i can lay my hands on CBN, i will be tempted to straggle them. I told the person that how did they expect the rice millers to get access to loans for their milling business when they are increasing MPR in the name of trying to attract foreign portfolio investors(FPIs) to come and buy treasury bills and bonds that they are not even interested in coming to buy. I further told the person that they might be putting the rice farmers and millers out of business because banks would rather go and buy non-risk and tax free treasury bills and bonds at that high rate than lend to farmers and millers and those millers that take the risk to get the loan at such a high interest rate will have no option than to increase the price of rice in order to be able to make some profit. This government just like making noise and taking pictures.

Ok. Thanks.

So what in your opinion is the cause of the high cost of the local rice?. We had thought with all the news of bumper harvest and near sufficiency in rice production being given by the CBN, the price ought to have come down to a reasonable level but the price is still high and out of the reach of many people. Why is the price of a 50kg local rice not in the 9k-10k range?.

Btw, do you have outlets in a place like Auchi in Edo state?.

oshiomole does not sound yoruba and it is not a yoruba name. oshiomole can be broken into 'oshio' and 'mole'. 'oshio' is a popular prefix in Etsako names. It is like how the igbos prefix 'chukwu' or the yorubas prefix 'oluwa' to their names. oshiomole means 'it is God that owns today'.

You're right but what if that N10k goes into some form of insurance plan?Still better than a savings account.
A good idea but what the insurance companies operate these days is like the child savings account also. They only throw in insurance cover and you know insurance has several 'hidden' legal terms and conditions that you might not understand. It is when it is time to redeem that some breaches will be shown to you. I have a child account for my kids. There are times i default on the monthly payment which is not a big issue to the bank. Whenever i become buoyant, i pay in arrears. The arrears payment is not because of the bank but because i want to meet the targeted yearly amount i have set. Iam sure if you try that with insurance, you had already breached the contract of not paying premium as at when due and therefore no cover.

I understand what you are saying.I just used government bond as an example.Trading can be another use of that money.Like I said,I'm not a financial expert but what I'm emphasising is that putting that money into a savings account yields very little returns.
I perfectly understand what you say. Even for trading, you need capital to start. Can you start a trading with 10k?. My point is that you have to first accumulate before you now decide what you want to do. A child's saving account is an accumulation. There are people who have only 1k that they can afford to be putting in every month. What type of trading will you tell such a person to start with that 1k. Sound financial advise is that you accumulate first in a savings account and when it is something substantial, you move it to risk free investments like bonds or treasury bills. Do not forget trading can lead to serious loss and a wipe-out of the entire initial capital.
FamilyRe: 5 Reasons You Need To Open A Savings Account For Your Child by NL1960: 5:02pm On Oct 26, 2016
thorpido:
Well I'm not a financial expert but I know for instance that instead of putting money into a savings account,you can buy government bonds.
N120k is not too little to invest.
What iam saying is that will you not accumulate the money somewhere first before buying government bonds?. A child Savings account is not supposed to be an account that you dump a big lump sum into at once. It is suppose to be an account that you deposit a consistent amount at a defined frequency. So, if somebody wants to be depositing a fixed 10k amount every month into a child's savings account, should the person not do that but instead go and buy government bonds of 10k for that month and then at the end of the next month, he goes again to buy another government bond of 10k?. Do not forget that some banks demand for a minimum amount for government bonds and treasury bills.

On a serious note,there are better ways to invest the money.
What better ways?. I hope you know that the money is not a bulk money at once. It has to accumulate over time. So, if one is putting 10k into such an account, that comes to 120k at the end of one year. So, what better ways can you invest 120k?.

This might be true but there has to be theory first before practicals. When you study the theory, you will be surprised that you will apply them when you are out. What you will study in sociology will also be theory. It is when you come out that you will start applying it. Iam not trying to discourage you sha from sociology.
