I am a pharmacy student who is struggling to break into the world of programming...I have downloaded and studied lot of videos on YouTube and i do make use of the free lessons offered by freecodecamp. But all the hours i've put into learning how to code seems to been in vain, as I can't apply most things I've learnt to do something remarkable in real life. You need a mentor, either online or offline. But offline will be more advantageous.

I'll try to make this short.

Yesterday I was having a conversation with my fiancée about my mum's suggestion about how to go about our wedding which is scheduled to take place Jan next year. My mum suggested that we do both trad and white wedding on the same day to cut cost. She opined that we do the white wedding in the morning and hold the traditional marriage as a reception in the afternoon. I pretty much see reasons from her perspective considering the harsh economic condition in Nigeria.

I was relating this to my fiancée yesterday in a phone call, when she flared up and said I should have consulted her to seek her opinion on this marriage arrangement before going to my family to seek theirs because I said my mum's advise seems okay.

What I deduce from her plight was that she wants the trad marriage at the village (south-east) while the white at the town where we base (South-West). That was what I initially wanted but due to high inflation in the land, I'm actually tilting towards my mum advise because I can't go bankruptcy just because I want to satisfy her. Why not use a stone to kill two birds?

She wants a cream-de-la-cream kind of wedding but she's not ready to assist financially to make that happen. (she's an awaiting corper)

I told her that the cost of transportation and lodging people from the village (hers and mine) to the city for our white marriage alone is gulping about 500/600k. That's transportation & lodging alone ooo.. I'll now spend if not x2 of what I spent on trad for white.. Why not just do everything in the village and move on with our lives? We can actually have it in the village and it will still be all nice and glamourous.

She said she wants to have a say in how her marriage will look like. Her imput is welcomed. But if she still insist on having the white wedding and not putting finances into consideration. I'm thinking that she want the white wedding on the city because of her friends who will attend which is not enough reason to go bankruptcy for.

It was a heated argument yesterday. We both went to bed angrily and not in talking terms till now

If there are kids (underage): you guys have to work out custody sharing and expenses sharing. You have to let the kids know you all are still a family, just that some people will be leaving apart. That will help till they mature to understand and assimilate. (So it doesn't wreck them.emotionally)

If the kids aren't underage: better. You can move forward

If no kids: it's well.

All I can say is, follow God more these period.
It's gonna really hurt when you see happy couples or families for the first few months.
But time will heal, slowly.

I think your post is the most spot-on I've read so far (to me). One of the biggest problems we have in Nigeria is that we forget that private enterprise should drive everything else,  including governments. How can the government provide electricity in Nigeria when they haven't seen a successful private owned power generating company in Nigeria? The only way to see Nigeria as a business man is through the lens of the population. All the challenges are really the hidden business opportunities. If I start a business in Nigeria today, I would  apportion a lion share of my start-up capital to sustainable electricity (eg solar) even if I'm only able to power essential things like computers, close circuit cameras in every office and the compound, , and fans; I can do without fridges and air conditioners initially. A strict enforcement of employment policies, eg hire and fire trigger (how I hire and fire employees). What we have in Nigeria are scenarios whereby people invest 80-90% of total capital in merchandise or goods, and then 10-20% in recurrent expenditure. They then rely on "good people" or "Christians" or "devout moslems" or relations to run the most critical aspects of the business. In business, your most trusted employees are your cameras and computers ( which report directly to you). As a start up, you should only expose your strategic capital to basically yourself only at the initial stage. You can relax that later. I witnessed a new start up (a branch start up) sometime ago in the States. In the first month of the start up, the bosses came from far flung parts  of the US to physically inspect events on the ground. These bosses, some of them in their late seventies and early eighties were STANDING AND WORKING round a huge warehouse between 10pm in the night and 5am in the morning. They were also on cell phones constantly talking to other branches and coordinating everything. This was a new branch. They could have designated some managers to do that. They didn't. They had to do it physically themselves.  I'm afraid we Nigerians are not learning a lot from "oyibo" people. For me, I only see a SEA OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES in Nigeria.
That is why most foreign owned companies and some smart Nigerian companies are having a field day today in Nigeria.

Even many years later, this post still makes sense.
