Politics › Grazing Reserves Will Lead To Another Civil War-anglican Church Warns by Noneroone(op): 6:28pm On May 21, 2016 |
Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Most Rev’d (Dr) Nicholas Okoh has called on the Federal Government to scrap the proposed grazing reserves for herdsmen. Reading out the resolutions of the Diocese of Abuja Synod yesterday, the Primate warned that such decision would lead to a civil war. He stressed that establishing grazing sites across the country would give herdsmen “unwarranted special preference” and make them automatic indigenes of all the regions of the country. Okoh said, “The synod hereby states unequivocally that the move to create grazing reserves for Fulani herdsmen around the country does not have our support. This is because the move treats a set of people with unwarranted special preference, making them indigenes of all regions of the country. Hide quoted text “There have been countless isolated cases of herdsmen brutality to their host communities. These notorious activities of herdsmen are capable of dragging the country into another civil war. The Fulani herdsmen are private businessmen who take away all proceeds of the business, not sharing with either their host communities or the government. “We wish to re-echo to the Federal Government, states and individuals involved, the recommendation already made earlier, that ranches should be built in their own localities for modern animal husbandry. In some parts of Nigeria, people are already grappling with high population growth and land does not expand. Nobody’s land should therefore be given forcefully given to anybody in any guise. “The synod calls on the National Assembly to drop the bill on grazing reserves as it is only heating up the polity and will do no good to the herdsmen, their host communities or the government.” http://dailypost.ng/2016/05/21/grazing-reserves-for-fulani-herdsmen-will-lead-to-another-civil-war-anglican-church-warns-buhari/lalasticlala |

Politics › Discontent In Biafraland-afp by Noneroone(op): 10:21am On May 19, 2016 |
Port Harcourt, Nigeria -- Minutes after
touching down in Port Harcourt, I could
feel the paranoia setting in.
I'd come to the city in Nigeria's south to
travel to "Biafraland" in the southeast,
which declared independence from the
rest of the country in 1967, sparking a
brutal civil war that lasted until 1970.
Refugees flee during the "Biafra War,"
January, 1970. (AFP file photo)
Discontent with the federal government
has never been far from the surface in
the region and over the last few months
has increased, after the leader of a
hardline pro-Biafra group, Nnamdi Kanu,
was arrested and put on trial in the
capital, Abuja.
Kanu, of the Indigenous People of Biafra
(IPOB) group was arrested in October on
charges of "treasonable felony" and
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari
has described him as committing
"atrocities" against the state.

November, 2015. (AFP / Pius Utomi Ekpei)
I've covered his trial for months from
Lagos, the commercial hub in the
southwest where Kanu is written off as a
radical heretic with a dangerous agenda
that will result in another civil war.
In the rare times there is news on his
case, it's brief.
Support heartland
I wanted to see what the situation was
like on the ground in the heartland of his
support, in "Biafraland" itself.
Last month IPOB, which generally only
communicates in wordy press releases
and through pro-Biafran newspapers in
the southeast, agreed to talk to AFP so
my photographer colleague Stefan
Heunis and I set off for Port Harcourt.
The strategic city -- the hub of Nigeria's
oil and gas industry -- was part of the
independent Republic of Biafra in the
1960s until it was recaptured by the
army in 1968.
Unlike in Abuja and Lagos, news of
Kanu's trial dominates the front pages of
newspapers and radio airwaves here
and pro-Biafra graffiti and posters are
commonplace on the streets.

streets of Aba, southeastern Nigeria
calling for Nnamdi Kanu's release. (AFP /
Pius Utomi Ekpei)
In the wider southeast, Kanu's IPOB
group seems to enjoy VIP status.
It operates with martial discipline, has
chapters in many southeast states
and uses code names.
With Kanu behind bars, IPOB is
suspicious of strangers, fearing they
are agents of the federal government.

a pro-Biafra protest in 2015. (AFP / Stefan
Heunis)
The suspicious atmosphere is
aggravated by long-standing ethnic
animosities in a country that before
colonial rule was a multitude of
kingdoms and tribal states and today is
home to some 500 ethnic groups, with
Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo the three
largest.
The ethnic divisions are being
aggravated in a worsening economic
climate caused by the fall in global oil
prices, which has drastically cut
government revenues from exports. |

EzePromoe: It is you that isn't getting in touch with current realities. You're not up to date, if not, you should have known about the controversy on gay rights that has almost crippled the Anglican communion. I'm sure you don't know about the LAMBETH and GAFCON conferences, one being the assembly of liberal bishops and the other being the assembly of conservative bishops which the Church of Nigeria belongs to. Do you know that the Church of Nigeria has since been proclaimed by the former primate not to be any longer in Communion with the See of Canterbury but in Communion with all Provinces that holds the historic faith and doctrines outlined in the Scripture which the Church of England has fallen out of with the ECUSA due to liberalism, automatically making the Church of Nigeria dealignated from them. You need to know more about the Anglican Church. hahaha...stop advertising your ignorance you rebel! Member churches of Anglican communion relate on two basis. They are in full communion with the see of canterbury and in communion with each other. The church of Nigeria is formally in communion with Church of England as well as the rest, but restricts its relations 'cos of certain activities. Just like a married couple sleeping in seperate rooms for sometimes doesnt mean they are seperated. GAFCON is not recognized by the communion, it a platform where conservatives chat their common cause. Only the episcopal church and that of canada has the church of Nigeria formally stopped relating with cos they are liberal hardliners. Episcopal church was suspended by the communion earlier this year for 3yrs cos of their hardline position on samesex marriage. They'll not participate in any anglican activity in the global level nor represent Anglican communion even in US. The Cana (conservatives in US) has by implication been recognized as a seperate anglican province. The US chuch are expected to put their house in order witihn this period. Stop viewing everything from the anarchist point. |

But no need for the argument anymore, we've moved back into the church, and a programme was held there yesterday. lol... Some of your claims show you really arent an Anglican. EzePromoe: I can't believe it that my church is on the news for the first time but for the wrong reasons. Let me give you a snippet of what the controversy is all about. St. Matthew's is a self sustaining church which has over the years been the backbone of Anglican revival. Those of you who know the Anglican Church very well will understand some certain restrictions that was placed on some fire-brand Christian activities which was considered unAnglican. St Matthew played a huge role in turning things around and today, St. Matthew stands out in the diocese. One of the aim of the church is rural evangelism as well as Anglican revival. We've planted churches in many communities all around SS and SE part of the country. Now comes in the diocese under the Bishop, thinking that we're taking things to the extreme, or rather that St. Matthew is beginning to act as an independent church because (according to them), we're working against the Anglican doctrines going into mission and promoting the church without involving the diocese, while this has been our tradition for 28 years of our existence. Then they removed the rector and brought in this Venerable Adubasim who has been working as an agent of the diocese, upsetting the tradition on which the church was built which is evangelism. That's one thing we would never accept, hence we continued our missions with or without his authorization or that of the diocese, and that is the reason for this brouhaha. The story of the Archdeacon being harassed is so untrue. hmm...so you are part of the confusion. Did i just hear you call Venerable, an 'agent' of the diocese? Nobody fights and wins the church. |

confetti: Glad this Church is finally sealed off at least for the time being. I have queried why this action has not been taken long ago. I fail to understand how some group of people in the church would be bigger than the whole diocese.
I remember a case that a church member wanted his child baptized. Members of this clique fought the church member, fought the priest and people who came for the baptism and there reason was that they do not believe in infant baptism. I was pissed off. It wasn't there child that was being baptized. The father of the Child believes in infant Baptism and so wanted it for his child yet these set of people were ready to fight to stop another person's belief in the process of enforcing theirs. A set of people who call themselves Christians but all they do is fight, sow discord and lead their congregation to disobedience and they still believe in their minds that they are worshiping God? People with reprobate minds.
Anglicans believe in infant baptism. Even Bible said Peter Baptized Cornelius and all his household. If you disagree with the Anglican doctrine, get yourself out of the church and start your own church and call it whatever you like.
If these people did this to Ven. Adubasim who is the meekest of Venerables I know, I guess God has vindicated many other Pastors that were sent there and had these same issues. wonders will never end |
