Absolutely. My mistake.

@Ashiwaju and to a lesser extent, nuggard

I will no longer partake in the derailment of this thread. I have made points on the pain being suffered and nothing from either of you counters them. Start a thread on this I will be more than happy to respond. You had better stack up on your FACTS beforehand!

You both are coming after the dust has settled to make comments. How funny. I only regard men who find their courage in the heat of battle and not at the post-mortem.

Oh yeah, Ashiwaju, when I said you were battle-weary, it was concerning OUR sparing on this thread and not the WAR, ok? Get it together, man!

I'm done talking about this topic on this thread.
PoliticsRe: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Nutter(m): 1:49am On May 19, 2006
The quiz has me down as a STATIST. I however don't agree fully with it's description. I don't think there are enough questions in the quiz to adequately tease out the mind-set of respondents.
PoliticsRe: Senate Throws Out Third Term Amendment Bill by Nutter(m): 12:44am On May 19, 2006
I hear you brother. You echo some of my sentiments. It is time for our leaders to create a Nigeria that we all find accomodating and not one that continues to be exclusive. My hopes are not high in this regard hence my clamour for a dissolution of the entity. My worst case scenario would be one of autonomy for the regions and a weak centre. Even the Irish (not the Northern Irish) who are part of the UK have a Prime Minister so these ideas are not far-fetched.

I should stop here else I continue to be guilty of the very thing I earlier apologised for. Nice chatting with you though.

Power to the People!

@Ashiwaju

grin You sound battle-weary. Good. I hadn’t even started with you. All your ‘points’ were revealed to reflect nothing more than a figment of your imagination. They simply do not bear out the situation on the ground – far from it. Next time, I hope you will fully evaluate your thoughts before you rush to your keyboard. Now Ogbeni, go and brush-up on Nigerian history and stop embarrassing yourself. First thing you should do is get to know the 250 ethnic groupings that make up your country. Until that is done, your clamour for One-Nigeria shall remain empty.

@jibitoye

What will you do with Biafra if you have it today? I bet you do not know the first things about that.

Don’t be presumptuous. Remember, Biafra was a fully-functional republic for several years. Remember, the technological advances made with substandard materials (and at war time no less) remain a beacon and a source of pride to Africans at home and in the Diaspora; and the envy of all others.

If you know that as a Nigerian, there are institutions that will guarantee that your eventual outcome in life will not be dependent on inheritance, status, tribe, clan, sex or any other social criteria and that irrespective you can aspire for anything of your heart’s desire without fear of injustice or systemic strangulation, you will not be anchoring for dismembering Nigeria!

Exactly! You have hit the nail on the head. At great pain I shall remind all that the Igbo bought into the notion of Nigeria and made several sacrifices in support of its unity. The first recorded attack of Igbo in the North was in the 1950s. Before our independence. Yet the Igbo held aloft a dream for a united entity. However, those institutions that should ensure equity and justice remain seriously lacking. Even more troubling is the fact that the very custodians of those institutions are unconcerned about the deliberate targeting of a particular group. The war has been over for more than 35 years. How much longer shall we wait for justice to be done? It's easy for people like Ashiwaju to rush to condemn. I doubt that they know what it's like to run from a mob of matchete-weilding youths intent on drawing blood. I doubt that they know what it's like beg for mercy while they hack away your limbs. I doubt that they know what it's like to see a business you have slaved for, razed to the ground. I doubt that they know what it's like to receive the bodies of dead relatives; men, women and children, whose only crime was that they were Igbo. I doubt that they know what it's like to behold the sight of a pregnant women whose belly was ripped open in the crudest and most despicable of ways. I doubt that they know what it's like to see your entire family beaten and set alight before your eyes. Well folks, that is the Igbo reality. Our reality in the Nigerian pod. Are we not human too?

The sad part is that a Biafran nation or Niger Delta republic with its present constitution of leadership will not guarantee such.

That’s your opinion; one you are fully entitled to. I however disagree. We may not be able to talk in terms of guarantees but one thing I am sure of is there would be a sense of belonging. The glass ceiling would disappear. Above all, lives would be spared.

The bulk of the oil in the UK comes from the North Seas yet, the people in Scotland are not arguing about leaving the UK in its entirety to form a new country.

I’m pleased you raised the UK example. This is especially important because we owe the problems in Nigeria’s make-up to the UK, or more specifically, to Britain.

1.The clamour for the sovereign State of Biafra is NOT linked to oil wealth. Let us not confuse issues. It is directly linked to a pervading sense of injustice. It is directly linked to issues such as the permanent glass ceiling and the unwillingness of the stakeholders in Nigeria to accept the Igbo as a legitimate part of the country. We are tired of being partners in name alone. Above all, wherever there is a breakout of violence in any part of the country and for whatever reason, the Igbo are targeted. Is this not a legitimate concern?

2.It’s not entirely correct to state that the Scots do not want a country of their own. In fact, only last year, the Scots and the Welsh were intensifying talks about the formation of independent nations. Their argument was that as a result of their membership of the UK, smaller countries with smaller populations (than either the Welsh or the Scots) in Europe are allocated a lot more seats in the European parliament. You should have heard about this. This leads me to my next point.

3.Although the Scots and the Welsh are part of the UK, anyone who lives here would know of the healthy dislike they have for the English. This is based on perceived injustice. This is not entirely unjustified due to the concentration of political power in English cities. To pacify the Scots and the Welsh and to give them a sense of belonging, they were allowed to operate as pseudo-autonomous entities. They have their own houses of parliament, their own country flags, and their own anthems. Additionally, Scotland prints its own version of the British Pound. Again, you should be aware of all this. The message that we learn from the British style of governance is that you cannot isolate people and still expect them to carry on blindly swearing allegiance to an indivisible entity. The British who amalgamated over 250 different groups in Nigeria simply for commercial reasons, went back home and did the right thing for themselves. Now we are expected to die for a failed arrangement when the authors of that arrangement do not see it as workable among only 3 different groups. Contrast that with our 250 and the futility of the situation becomes clear.

It is important that if we are to move forward, we learn to call a spade a spade instead of busying ourselves calling it a garden implement. That is my grouse and that is why I have responded with civility to your post. You were not afraid to state that injustice abounds. The only difference is the mode it would be redressed. You want Nigeria, I want BIAFRA. Where then is the issue?

I apologise unreservedly to the author for derailing this thread. I shall henceforth 'behave' myself. sad

Atlast the much awaited guy has shown up. - Ashiwaju

grin You were waiting for me? Waiting for another round of pummelling? Surely you must have S&M leanings. cheesy

When i say, we have properties where we don't belong, if you understand yourself, you would know what i meant is if we split then we would end up having most of our stuff outside our territory. get that. - Ashiwaju

Sorry mate – too late! What you said is there for all to see. The context in which it was said is also there. Such a shame.

i want to use this opportunity to tell those who intends to sacrife their life to gain biafra, that 1. we would rather save their life to remain one nigeria and 2. that we would not only sacrifice one life to make nigeria stay as one nation. - Ashiwaju

Why are those lives not being saved now I ask you? If there is a problem with what was said about Miss World contestants, Igbo are killed. If cartoons are drawn in Denmark, Igbo are killed. If there is a tussle for power in the centre, Igbo are killed. America invades Afghanistan nko? Igbo are killed. America invades Iraq, Igbo are killed. Ah, ah! Na wetin?

When the Cocoa was coming from the WEST why didnt y'all talk of spliting nigeria - Ashiwaju

You cannot rewrite history my dear man. We all know about how the Igbo bought into the spirit of a united country. We all know that there was no part of Nigeria that was too far or too perilous for the Igbo to go and make a home. We all know that when we arrived in cities like Kano we were not received as comrades and partners in the Nigeria experiment but instead were directed to cemeteries to lay our heads. We all know about the State-sponsored massacres that forced the Igbo to flee from all parts of the country back to the East. We all know that when assurances were received, the Igbo AGAIN returned only to be massacred in a new wave of ethnic intolerance. We all know the stories of how limbs were hacked, heads were chopped off, eyes were punctured and pregnant women had their unborn babied ripped from their bellies. We know all these things yet you talk about COCOA? Who ever cared about your COCOA? You don’t seem to know that the money from cocoa was centred on developing the WEST while a stipend was sent to the centre. If you don’t know the history of the very country you fight to keep one then ASK. Or - better still - keep you diseased sense of history to yourself.

you are only showing to the whole world that y'all are cowards, you cannot stand a dialogue because you are weak and you want to resolve to violence. - Ashiwaju

When did this transmute from a debate between the both of us to one where a whole people are labelled cowards? Biko hold your tribalistic tendencies in check. Your statement is not only laughable but also weakens your One-Nigeria position.
PoliticsRe: Senate Throws Out Third Term Amendment Bill by Nutter(m): 12:32pm On May 18, 2006
@Ashiwaju

grin You are warning me? Don't be ridiculous mate. You don't have a clue about what I have done within and outside that country towards the struggle so it doesn't become you to tell me that I cannot stand and fight. Would I sacrifice my life for Biafra? YES! Not only that but I would give my life many times over if I could. The most interesting thing is there are many others just like me. What a silly question. Why would I not lay down my life so the next generation would not have to go through the despicable treatment that has long been my companion for no other reason than my ethnicity?

Your mind-set is betrayed by your remark: "We have properties where we don't belong". I thought all parts of Nigeria are for all its citizens? Errh Mr One Nigeria? You baby debater. You do not even know how to cover your flanks.

All I have done is highlight the inability of the country to remain one because the people in power have adopted the divide-and-rule strategy from their British masters. Some of you are fighting for one Nigeria yet do not know or care about the very people that make up the entity. There are over 250 distinct ethnic groupings and close to 400 languages in that country. You One-Nigerians, do you know the 250 different groups? Forget that. Do you (honestly) know up to 30 (just 30 of the 250) ethnic groups? If you do not know them, how can their interests be represented? How can Nigeria be truly one? How can one and all buy into the Nigeria experiment? Rubbish!

Bottom line, take your Nigeria and I will take my BIAFRA. You are incapable of debating the merits of your position.

@Ashiwaju

It’s very mischievous of you to say the Igbo did the same in the East. Was it not a RETALIATORY measure? After many years of being butchered like animals we decided to take a firm stand to show that no one has a monopoly on violence. Instead of acknowledging this, you are trying to catch the truth in a tangled web. Be more objective Mr man. It’s because of all this double standards that the country is having all the problems it is.

@lawole

You are there talking about factories and property when lives are at stake. That those lives are Igbo doesn’t make them any less precious biko. Ehhr, aburo?

Dats right Afeni. There are McDonald's outlets in countries like India and I doubt that the prices are astronomical. In these cases, cheap labour is key.

@Ashiwaju

Right now in Nigerian cities and border towns in countries such as Togo and Benin, the Biafran Pound is being spent! Right now in Nigerian cities and border towns, the Biafran Pound exchanges for 1 Pound to N270! Dey there dey jealous us.

Ashiwaju:
Naija We hail thee, its our home and its our hope, its our future and it must work regardless of our tribe, our beliefs and our norms
Really? Are we talking about the same country here? When the Igbo are routinely massacred in the North because of their religion and their ethnicity, why does your voice fall silent? Rubbish! My friend, when you are ready to call a spade a spade, then I can engage you in a proper dissection of the political situation in your failed republic.

By so doing i think most Nigerians will overlook this TTA nonsense.
That's the problem with Nigerians. Why should we overlook what has gone before? Why? How then will we learn? It's because of this attitude of ours that people like IBB still call the shots, thereby ensuring the penury of the people.

Anyway, you lot can keep burying your heads in the sand. There is no hope for Nigeria. None. That cursed British invention is doomed. Doomed I tell you! A country with the name provided by Lugard's drunken girlfriend without any regard for the country's people or culture. Rubbish!
