That classification comes from the animal kingdom, with every specie that moves along in herds or packs. There is always a natural pecking order. In the animal kingdom, the alpha male is the dominant male, the head. It's that simple with animals.

But with humans, it's a different ball game. While there are naturally dominant males amongst peers, the bulk of those who claim to be alpha are those who take it upon themselves to be alpha and to prove it. The Guapos and Okonkwos of the world. The ones for which such feel good articles like the one posted are written.

The alpha male syndrome is especially common amongst teenage boys . The desire to be dominant to increase their worth. Symptoms? The traits I highlighted last night... Deep seated fear and low esteem, a mask of haughtiness, being inconsiderate and tactless... and the likes. It's the reason there are bullies, and cults. But these are alpha alright, since most actually become dominant with their behaviour.

As boys grow into men, they eventually abandon the alpha male syndrome and work towards becoming a real man.
