Jonathan visits UN House, says we ‘re on top of the situation BY DANIEL IDONOR https://vml1.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Jonathan-House-UN-Visit.jpg ABUJA – BARELY 24 hours after a suicide bomber rammed his car into United Nations, UN, building in Abuja, killing at least 25 people and injuring over 40, President Goodluck Jonathan, Saturday, paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to the scene of the blast. President Jonathan, after seeing the extent of damage, assured Nigerians and the international community that Nigeria is on top of the situation, to uncover those behind the rising pace of terrorism in the country. He vowed that Nigeria will continue to collaborate with the international community on the war against terrorism, and expressed Nigeria’s appreciation to her friends and allies, especially world leaders for their solidarity with the country in these trying moments. “One thing is very clear, terrorist attack on any individual or any group is a terrorist attack to the rest of the world, it is not just about the UN office in Nigeria. We will work with the UN and all the world leaders, of course, many of them have contacted me between yesterday and today”, he said. Asked if the attack has adverse effect on the image of Nigeria, the President said, “of course, wherever you have terrorist attack in any country, Nigeria is not an isolated case. Many countries have suffered from terrorists attacks, may be it is the turn of Nigeria. But we are on top of the situation” Jonathan had arrived at the venue exactly 12.02 pm hours, with his aides and was received by the National Security Adviser, Ministers of Information, Police Affairs, International Affairs and Ministers of State for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Olusola Obada. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/08/jonathan-visits-un-housesays-we-re-top-of-terrorism/ |

Fani-Kayode apologises to ex-President Ex-Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, yesterday apologised to former President Olusegun Obasanjo over the attack on his ex-principal. He said his statement on Sunday was misunderstood because he only went on historical excursion in his comments. But he continued his plea that Obasanjo and ex-military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida to reconcile their differences amicably. The ex-minister, who apologised to Obasanjo in a statement in Abuja, said he did not at any time describe the former President as an ingrate. Fani-Kayode, on Sunday, took a swipe at Obasanjo over his vitriolic attacks that Babangida was a fool at 70. He had said Obasanjo made a grave mistake and inflicted a deep spiritual wound on himself by insulting Babangida. But Fani-Kayode yesterday recanted his verbal attacks on Obasanjo. He said: “It is with the utmost urgency and sadness that I have to point out the fact that the press statement that I issued on August 22, 2011, concerning the face-off between President Olusegun Obasanjo and General Ibrahim Babangida, has been completely misconstrued and misunderstood by virtually all and sundry. “I do not blame anyone for this but my own good self given that my choice of words was clearly ambivalent. “For the purposes of clarification, permit me to point out the following. At no point in time did I say that President Obasanjo was “ungrateful” or that he was “an ingrate” and neither did I ever “slam” or “attack” or seek to “insult” or “demean” him in anyway. “This was never my intention and given the strong relationship that I have with him, I would be the last person on earth to do such a thing. “In the press statement, I pointed out the fact that I proudly served in his administration and that his government had records of performance between 1999 and 2007 was not only “first class” but also “second to none”. “I also said that I remain eternally grateful to him for giving me the opportunity to serve my country and that I had deep affection and tremendous respect for him just as I do for General Babangida. At the end of the statement I concluded by expressing the hope that they settle the said rift as quickly as possible.” http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news-update/17169-fani-kayode-apologises-to-ex-president.html |
Collect more than 6 months’ rent, go to jail, Fashola tells landlords Respite has finally come to tenants in Lagos as the state governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has signed into law a bill that will make it unlawful for a landlord or his agent to demand or receive from a sitting tenant rent in excess of six months. The law, which explicitly harps on the rights and obligations under tenancy agreement and relationship between the landlord and tenant, will go a long way in addressing the problem of housing in the metropolis. According to the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ade Ipaye, a defaulter of the law would be liable to pay a fine of N100,000 with the option of a three-month jail term. The law also stipulates a six-month quit notice for a tenant who pays the rent yearly, with the clause that a tenant might apply to court for an order to stop unreasonable increase of rent by the landlord. In a situation where the increase is unreasonable, the law allows the court to order the landlord to reduce the amount. The law also makes it unlawful for a landlord to eject a tenant from any premises pending the determination of the action by the court. On offences and penalties, the law says that any person who demolishes, alters or modifies a building in order to eject a tenant without the approval of the court shall be guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine of N250,000 or six months imprisonment. It states further that any landlord who forcibly ejects a tenant, threatens or molests a tenant by action or words will be liable to a fine of N250,000 or six months imprisonment. Commenting, Fashola said that the law would address the problem of housing as the state continued to explode in population. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/27189-collect-more-than-6-months-rent-go-to-jail-fashola-tells-landlords |
Poisonous beans scare in Port Harcourt BY GEORGE ONAH Port Harcourt – Consumers of beans in Rivers State are scared of buying the food item in the markets because of alleged “rumour” in the state that Boko Haram had brought contaminated bags of the commodity that would lead to massive deaths when consumed. Although the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Chinda has told the public to ignore the text messages warning people not to buy beans in the markets, Vanguard gathered, yesterday, that many consumers of beans are not taking the rumour lightly as they do not want to be used as guinea pigs in the Boko Haram beans scare. Chinda, however, told those who have proof of the poisoned beans in Rivers markets to “come with the beans”. He said neither the Rivers people nor state government has any quarrel with Boko Haram, and as such they have no business wanting to kill people in the state. One of the text message read “urgent, don’t eat beans for now. Boko Haram has poisoned beans sent to Port Harcourt markets, tell others”. The commissioner said the messages were the “handiwork of detractors and mischief makers”. At the mile one market, a trader on the commodity simply called Musa said “we cannot sell poisoned beans because it could be traced back to us and you know the consequences of such”, acknowledging that he was aware of the text messages. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/08/poisonous-beans-scare-in-port-harcourt/ |
