wow, my father told me that my great grandfather is from Akoko-Edo and he migrated to Akoko in Ondo state which is where my father claim as his home. I recently found out that I have current family members that speak the Edo language but I am thinking it is actually Otuo. But my great father considered himself a full blooded yoruba man sha.  Has anyone ever realized that Yoruba in Akoko sounds weird? Don't get me wrong, I grew up speaking that dialect of yoruba, but it wasn't untill after I left Akoko and my accent changed that I began to notice that Akoko yoruba stand apart from any other yoruba I have ever heard.

honestly, why are they seeking provocation? Gosh, this is so unnecessary. They are not behaving like christians. "The bible says do unto others as you would want others to do unto you" will they like it if someone create and even called burn the bible day? They have a right to do it, but they are just seeking unnecessary provocation. By doing this they are spreading intolerance and hate.
RomanceRe: Is It Strange That I Don't Want A Church Wedding? by Oba234: 10:43pm On Sep 06, 2010
I don't what this people are talking about. A church is not a building. It's a gathering of a group of believers and it can be in a court room, your village, etc. The bible says where two or three are gathered I am there, so ignore all this people that don't know their bible. Anywhere you have your wedding is fine with papa God.

The past is useless, if we cant use it today to build for tomorrow. All this endless academic debates are worthless.

In any case, what are Africans doing today? Sitting on their backsides blaming an imaginary species of Negro known as 'leaders' for their inactivity and ineptitude. Yes, we all know Tyson used to be the World Champ. What is he today?
I agree with you. The past is the past for a reason. Move on with the future.
CultureRe: Kneel Down And Feed Your Husband? by Oba234: 6:25pm On Aug 18, 2010
suedoh2006:
Watch the difference between western and Africa marriages, the western marriage doesn't last long because of the so called equality right between couples. On the other hand, marriage  within the Africa community does last longer because of the adhrence to the cultural heritage and  the  female self presentation. I don't mean to be rude but if  you can't follow after our Africa culture then divorce will be knocking at your door. Bible say women summit to your husband and the bible did not say in the 1990's only so it has to be continious.
are you sure thats the reason why marriages in African culture last long? From what I have noticed in my family, many women were not happy in their marriages, but many of the women stayed in the marriage because they had no choice. The law wasn't on their side. If they had left, they would have been left with nothing. In a society were the man is the only person bringing in the income So women depended on their husband's income many women have no say and stayed in marriages because they know their kids will suffer if they leave. My mother was telling me the other day, many African women back in the day were suffering in silence because they stayed in unhappy marriages because of their children. Think about it, how many of our grandmothers were happy sharing their husbands with 5 to 10 different women? but they stayed in their marriage because there was nothing else to do.
CultureRe: Kneel Down And Feed Your Husband? by Oba234: 6:18pm On Aug 18, 2010
since when did African men began kneeling down to propose to a woman? A man kneeling to propose marriage marriage is simply western culture not African.
Anyway back to the topic, do what you want to do. If your husband is okay with that then it shouldn't be an issue. Every marriage is different. I personally don't care whether somebody is kneeling or not.

You are not disaggreeing with much of what I said either. However, there is a fine line between keeping an eye out because there are bad elements within a group of people, and using blanket "bigotry" methods, such as "We don't allow Nigerians in here". There was (and this is the point) "absolutely no other other reason to suspect this particular person of any crime. They are basically saying if you are Nigerian, you must be criminal enough to be unwanted here - even if you happen to be the Doctor to their president.
I never said what they did was right. I don't even know how I got on this subject, but I completely agreed that it's bigotry on their part.

@Oba234
Not many peopel would disagree with most of what you stated here, but:

1. These do not imply that anybody that answers Nigerian deserves to be discriminated against, especially when there is absolutely no other reason. That is the definition of bigotry.
2. Imply that South Africa needs a tighter immigration control, not some ad hoc repulsive "We Don't Allow Nigerians In Here' approach. Anything beyond your national laws and internationally accepted norms is discriminatory.

As long as a Nigerian is in your country legally, and commited no deportable crime, there is no justification for xenophobia. If the SA government wants to send all Nigerians packing let them do it openly rather than continue to harass innocent people.

The doctor that was harassed in this incident probably contributes more to the SA economy than the so-called bouncer - it goes both ways.

Your own experience should show you that this is patently wrong. If you felt it necessary to hide your Nigerian-ness in order to be accepted don't you think something is wrong - when you are the same perfectly good person whether you identified yourself as a Nigerian or not. Being nice is not unconditional - so the SA's you met might be nice to all as long no "Nigerian" showed up or they could just be nice people whether or not you are Nigerian. There is no way to tell, and you did not find out because you basically reversed the process and banned your "Nigerian-ness" from showing.
first of all, Nigerians are not all discriminated against in south Africa. Just because there are a few incidences of discrimination doesn't mean the south african government hates Nigerians. Do you know that thousands if not millions of Nigerians in south african live there and nobody bothers them, but as soon as some nigerian experience some discrimination, it makes the news? They must love the place if they refuse to go back to nigeria. It's the truth that many nigerians in south africa are not there legally and many of them are in the drug business. It's unfortunate that the bad ones makes life difficult for the good ones, but it's the truth. A lot of nigerians in south africa are in some kind of shady business.  Secondly, you are taking what I said in the previous post a bit too literally. It was said in a jokingly kind of way. I didn't go out of my way to say I wasn't nigerian. Many of them just assume that I was an American because I came to south Africa with a group of Americans anyway and I have an American accent, so I didn't go out of my way to change their notion because they were right. I am nigerian american and it's not that big of a deal to me.  It depends on the situation. In some situation, I say I am an American and while talking to some locals, I told some of them I was Nigeria. It wasn't really that big of a deal for me. I do remember that I when I was in capetown, when I get into conversations with people,  I told some people that I was of nigerian nationality and none of them killed me o. Actually they didn't care, so now what?

Living there for only 4 weeks in South Africa is not good enough my friend. And the country has the highest AIDs rate in the world after Botswana.

Let us not forget that despoil is very common in that country moreso than any other African nation except DR Congo. Do not try to act like South Africa is the promise land. Those xenophobic riots were committed by Africans against fellow Africans such as the Somalis and Zimbabweans. What did they do to desserve to that? Because I heard both people are hard working.
Nobody is saying south africa is the promised land, but there are a lot of Nigerians that have this sense of deluded patriotism that really annoys me. They talk so much trash about the country without ever being there. I had a great time there and since south africans aren't here to defend themselves, I will defend them.  The Xenophobic riots in south africa was bad, but how can a country that just emerged from the Apartheid era handled the mass immigration of people that are coming to their country when they are still trying to develop their own country. Million of Zimbabweans are in south africa because of Mugabe and South Africa is forced to absorbed all those people into their economy and now the natives have to compete with them for a job when they are still  struggling. There are many people from the Congo there. Capetown is full of Somalis and Ethiopians. The security guards at my hotel were Congolese. The waiters at restaurants are all Zimbabweans. How did they get those jobs? Because they are willing to work for a lower pay than the natives and this doesn't make a lot of people happy. Many Nigerians are also there. This country is being forced to absorb all the immigrants from all over Africa because the rest of Africa can't get their Poo together. How can a developing country deals with all this? Frustration grows and it sometimes erupts into violence. In Nigeria, in the 70s or 80s, it was merely ghana and see how Nigerians treated them. Now imagine if the whole of west africa and south africa are now migrating into nigeria when Nigerians themselves are trying to find a job and see if violence won't erupt. Even in the developed country USA, anti immigration resentment is getting louder and louder and congress is in the midst of enacting a bill to not allow children of illegal immigrants to become a citizen all because they want to stop people from coming to the US. Arizona is now saying police can stop you to ask for your immigration status. Even in a developed country, it's a big problem, now a developing country like south africa, after emerging from Apartheid now has to deal with massive immigration into their country. I am not saying what they did is right, but frustration leads to anger. Also, the Xenophobic violence that occured in south africa two yrs ago was not as serious as they made it seemed in the media. The media is a propaganda machine. I even asked the locals there about that situation and they told me it wasn't as serious as they made it seemed and it was only restricted to a certain area

Oba234,

Lets be frank. Even though I agree with most of the things you have been saying, a lot of Africans are envious with Nigerians, because we can compete with them in their countries. Only a Nigerian has the audacity to challenge Africans in their own countries such as in Ghana, Togo, Kenya and South Africa.

Plus, the fact that we are not easily intimidated makes matter worse. Remember that South Africans were killing Somalis and people from Zimbabwe, but were chased away by Nigerians with AK-47s.

These same South Africans who are infected with AIDs and believe in despoiling their own women and robbing people bring up their own crime. There is a reason why people say South Africa has some of the worse crime in any nation besides Jamaica.
also, I think if Nigerians are really doing something good in this countries we go, I doubt we will be hated. I also don't think the problem is that Nigerians like to challenge others in their countries because even the Asians are challenging the whites in the US in terms of education and in the medical field and they are not hated, but there are a lot of evil people in our midst that makes it tough on everybody.

okay, I can clearly see you have some kind of biased against south africa. If I didn't spend 4 weeks in south africa, I may have believe what you wrote, but from my own view, south africa is no different from any developed country. They have their bad part and good part. In reference to crime, I actually felt safe there and I don't believe that they have a higher crime rate than Nigeria, Congo or Sudan. They are just good at keeping records of crime in the country while in countries like Nigeria, the police aren't keeping records and whatever they are keeping is lies, lies, lies. In comparison to first world country, their crime may be high, but in comparison to third world countries, I actually think it's pretty low.
