Sagamite:You said she is not unfavorable biologically, so how will she gives your kids bad genes? Second ,the fact that you stated that she is unfavorable based on your privileged, status and taste is culturally. Thirdly, you want your somebody that will give your kids genes that are look onto favorably by society? is that not cultural? Also because she has those features of the under-priviledge doesn't mean she is actually undernourished or unpriviledge, so in that instance, your particular view of how beautiful she is stems from cultural bias. |
Sagamite:How do Aleks look predisposed her in to anyway to any unfavorable biological conditions? She looks healthy and fit and she looks like can bare children. On what biological basis do we have to classify her as ugly? Our notions of beauty with regard to her stems from biases that have been culturally ingrained into us. |
Sagamite:
Cultural precepts can and do have grounding in favorable biological conditions so you are right to an extent. I've seen what you've been trying to say all along. Perhaps we've just misunderstood each other a bit. At the end of the day, the point is, regardless of biological founding, culture, or the power of society can still completely warp our ideals and understanding of things. How else do you explain the Asian foot-binding, western fasscination with mamary glands, the musai tribe with their prided plated lips. Do those things benefit the health of these people in any way? These fetishes, developed outside of reason. It wasn't founded on what would be favorable to health. A lot of our ideals are developed based on biology but culture can completely override it. Attractiveness can be based on biology but don't underestimate the power of society. |
anonymous6: Sagamite:Yes, a culture can perceived these pictures as beautiful if they haven't observed anything in that body type that will cause the person to be unhappy or unhealthy based on their surroundings We don't have any pre conceived biases coming out of the womb. Culture dictates to us what is good or bad based on what the culture has observed. Any decision that you make is based on a reason why the culture considers it a good thing. The culture has to observed that there is something unhealthy about looking that way in contrast to other body types to prefer a certain body types. The point is that it is all learned. All culture norms are based on observations of what is most likely to bring us happiness. That is the single universal construct that guides all our actions. If a culture observed somebody this big or skinny and they don't see any bad effects, they wouldn't develop any biases against it. You have to observed the effects. For example to elaborate further on what I am saying, imagine a child raised in an environment in which they have never seen or learn anything about a Lion. They don't know what the Lion is capable of physically and they don't know that Lion are species to be avoided in anyway. Even though we as humans have an innate survival instinct, if the child were to see the Lion, having no previous knowledge of the Lions harmful potentials, it would have no reason to avoid it. Our culture precepts comes from observations and what to like or not like based on what bring us happiness. So if a Lion attack somebody in your family and the person die, you learn to avoid lions, but you weren't born to avoid them untill you have see their actions. To summarize, you don't come out of a womb knowing what to do, cultures guides you. |
so here is the issue. We will never see eye to eye on this. I don't believe there is a range. I believe everything is 100% cultural. You believe otherwise. You think I am going in circles and I think you going in circles despite me giving you free tutorial. There are no biological example that you can give to me that I can't attribute to culture. I use to think like you at a certain point in my life where I use to attribute beauty as innate *hiss*, but the more I study and look it and question things, the more I have learned and I am 100% convinced there is nothing biological hence why we can never agree, therefore Good Night. |
exactly! if these societies are exposed to western culture through television, mass media and other means, they also will start to lose their traditional ideas of beauty and assimilate western ideas. and many tribes (like you say) don't even see bosoms as sign of beauty. many women go around bare breasted and it doesn't affect the males in any way because that's not what they are conditioned to find intimate.
Thank you. Somebody that understand what I am saying. I feel like I am just repeating myself in circles. No matter how people want to twist it, there is nothing biological about beauty. It differs across society and since we are become a more globalized society dominated by western culture, we are losing some of those diversity in beauty that have exists for hundreds of years. |
Sagamite:wrongggggggggggg! there is nothing about beauty that we are programmed to look for evolutionarily. If you are saying beauty is a natural thing, then every society will have the same standard of beauty and we all know that it's not true. There are some perceptions of beauty that are perceived by a certain societies as beautiful and people outside that society look at it as bizarre. Some examples includes feet binding by the chinese where young girls of upper class families had their binded so by the time they become adults they would have deformed small feet and this was considered beautiful at a certain point. Another example is western culture obsession with women bosoms as a biological stimulu. Studies have shown this is false. Men in western cultures are taught from early age to see bosoms in this way. Male attraction or obsession with human bosoms is not universal among all human beings so it's not biological. So a woman who does not have perky bosom in a society that values them, maybe consider less attractive, but in a society that does not value them, it's consider more attractive. The mursi tribe in east Africa for example believes that the bigger the plate is on a girls lips, the better she looks. Take a look at this website about the tribe. http://lumq.com/06/mursi/ |
Sagamite:sorry, I am not sure you are understanding what I am talking about because if you do, you would not have written what you just wrote. I think you should read what I wrote over and think about it and then type a response. Beauty is not an absolute thing. This is the main point, . You are not born with a certain taste for something. What is biological is to be attracted to people of the opposite sexes, but anything other than that is all a product of society. Everything that you like or think you like, your morality, beliefs, who you are attracted to are all shaped by culture from the beginning of your life and it's so ingrained in us that it's difficult for people to even differentiate what is biological and cultural sometimes. Say it with me, Perception of beauty is not biological. Your culture has ingrained in you things that are consider acceptable, beautiful and from those things that are consider acceptable or beautiful is where you get your opinions and tastes from. |
No, Beauty is culturally ingrained, so people that say she is ugly are saying that mainly as a result of how they have been conditioned to think of beauty in a certain way, so what you think it's your opinion or taste is really not your own opinion or taste since your taste or opinion comes from what your culture considers acceptable. Anyway sha, I like her. |
here is the other one [flash=400,380] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGqCDExp4IM&feature/related[/flash] |
okay, so I just saw a video on youtube showing an Egungun festival in Trinidad and Brazil and I was so shocked because I remembered that as a 7 yr old girl living in Akoko Ondo state back in the early 90s there was an egungun festival or something like that and I remembered being scared of it and my parents making sure me and my siblings didn't go outside. I also remembered watching outside my window as the Egugun who was usually dress in a costume made of grass goes around whipping people and people starts running from them like it's a fun activity. This used to scared the crap out of me. It's kinda cool to see that yoruba traditions have spread to other areas of the world. Below are the video [flash=400,380] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfLNy8EOAYs&feature/related[/flash] |
I am a bit skeptical because King Leopold never even step foot in the Congo. How will he know what to write when he never had any interaction with the people? |
what is Nigerian wear because I get confused sometimes? Is it the same across all ethnic groups? I know what my fellow Yoruba people typically wear, but after being around so many Nigerians, I can't differentiate who is hausa, igbo or yoruba. Also, I went to a Ghanaian wedding a couple of weeks ago and I saw big geles or what people called head wraps and I also saw agbada those big clothes that men typically wear and I was so confused. I thought ghanians typically wear Kinte cloth Are clothes typically labeled as Nigerian clothing really Nigerian or typical west african clothing? |
I also saw it on the CNN website, this is a Sad case. I knew this would happen. Mubarak was what was holding that country together. The same thing is going to happen to Libya after Ghadaffi is ousted from the country. I think Libya's chaos will be worse than Egypt. |
The SE should not have any more state. We can't keep comparing southeast to the north. The north has la arge land mass. The SE lacks land which is why so many Igbo people live in other parts of the country. The SE cannot contain them alone and now they want to divide the little they have into smaller pieces ![]() |
I don't think they are mostly white unless you are saying Arab = white. Most of those men are from Egypt or north Africa which means they are Arab people. The only whites on that list are the two from South Africa which makes sense since South Africa has the biggest white population on the African continent. Big ups to Adenuga and Dangote. Anybody know of a way I can get a job with Dangote? I am seriously looking. |
lol, Nigeria already have too many states. There should be no more than 20 states in Nigeria. Come on now! Nigeria is a country twice the size of California and has 36 states. Na wa o. By this rate we will end with 50 very soon. *hiss* The only outcome of this is more money been hoarded by greedy politicians, some people are looking for a way to cash in the politics game. That being said, Nigeria can have all the states it wants. They can even create hundred self, wetting concern me? It ain't logical and I doubt it will aid the economy, but since Nigeria seems to be a sinking ship let them do whatever they want. |
Based on what I am hearing from some of the Nigerian men on this board defending these boys actions makes me very afraid. I fear some Nigerian men. |
wow, only in Nigeria. Sometimes, I thank God I wasn't raised in that country. Imagine if a video like this surfaced in the US? Those boys will be in jail by now. I still find it bizarre how they have not been able to identify the men in that tape. Law enforcement in Nigeria needs a serious upgrade. How can I even expect police in Abia to solve the case when the culprits behind the Abuja bombings have yet to been identified. what a crazy country!!!!! Nothing is run efficiently. O ma se o. For the record, I have not seen the tape and I refused to see the tape just based on what I have heard. |
anybody know of an event in the DC area that involves food and music? Thats all I am asking for. |
Thanks, I got it. |
can I have a number? Address? How much does he charge? |
Hi, I need a tailor to sew some nigerian clothes that I am planning on wearing for a wedding in a month. If you know of any tailors in the DMV area, please let me know. Thanks a lot |
I never understood the big deal on why women must stay in their father's house untill marriage. Anyway sha, I lived in the states and I just graduated. so I am back home, but my mother is already trying to move me out. She is even looking for apartment for me self. The only obstacle is that I am yet to get a permanent full time job. After this, I am gone. I think you should try to reason with your parents and try to understand where their fears are coming. You should show that you are capable of living on your own by having a job that can provide food, shelter and security. |
I don't blame Achebe because when I first heard of the movie a year ago, I immediately thought of Chinua Achebe's book, but after reading more into it, I realized it has nothing to do with the book. The title of the movie will be misleading to many like me who may be thinking it's a movie based on Chinua Achebe's book. |
r u living in the US or Nigeria. Second wife where? In yankee, I don't think so. |
ogugua88:Obama still struggles with it and he said every once in a while he takes a puff. The point of this is not about Obama. It's just to say she is not the first nor the last person to smoke and many people smoke including the president of the US smokes, so I don't understand the big hoopla about it. So she smoke? okay so what!! does that change the price of bread? |
Even if Obama is/was a smoker, that makes it okay to smoke? Has Obama ver claimed that his smoking habit a good choice?
now quote where I stated that her habit was a good choice and after reading that article, I don't think Tonto herself said it is a good habit. She said that it is none of your damn business. Most people I know that smoke knows it is a bad habbit, but they don't need people reminding them every second. I think she is aware. The point is focus on yourself. There is a bad habit that each one of US are struggling with. |
If we are so concern about health, lets focus on ourself first. A lot of us are eating ourself to death. I see a lot of Nigerians men with beer bellies their wives who are big mommas with big thighs and many of them don't realized that fat deposits in the belly and thighs are some of the most dangerous. Those fats causes cholestrol issue, heart problems, diabetes, etc. So let's stop pointing fingers, |
some Nigerians are Ameebo oshi. What concern us with what she is doing to herself? Abeg, free her jor. Half of Hollywood smoke. Even Obama self is a smoker. Yes,It is a bad habit that is very addictive, but it's not the end of the world. She knows the consequences of her actions. You don't like her, don't watch her movies. |
