GM’s Cadillac brand has been coming out with a new series of commercials called ‘Future is Here’.

In one of those commercials, the automaker is showcasing ‘Super Cruise’, Cadillac’s driver assist system competing with Tesla’s Autopilot, and in the ad, GM shows the Cadillac CT6 passing by a Tesla Model S(after removing the badging on Tesla) as they state “the first true hands-free driving system for the freeway.”

GM has a point that it has the first  “hands-free driving system for the freeway” since unlike GM, Tesla asks drivers to keep their hands on the steering wheel when using Autopilot. GM still requires the driver’s attention and even monitors it.

As for the actual performance of the systems, they are both very different. On the highway, they perform in a similar way , but Super Cruise can not be activated in as many situations as Tesla’s Autopilot.

Tesla's Autopilot relies on a computer vision technology powered by a neural net combined with high-precision maps that are being gathered by the company’s own customer fleet of several hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

GM’s Super Cruise works with maps gathered by separate mapping vehicles using lidar sensors and therefore, its Super Cruise-equipped vehicles can only work where they have mapped the environment.It will disengage in areas where it can’t maneuver properly.

Previous automakers who took swipes at Tesla include Nissan releasing an “attack ad” against Tesla’s reservation process for the Model 3 in 2016 and just a few months later, BMW tried to convince Tesla Model 3 reservation holders to buy the 3 Series plug-in with a series of commercials.

Either way, it’s nice to see some friendly competition on the driver assist system front.

The revered title of 'Car of the Year' has been given out in Europe since 1964. It is awarded by a pan-European panel of judges, and it highlights the very 'best' car from the previous 12 months.

At the beginning there 26 journalists from nine countries who picked the winner, and now the panel has grown to 60 men and women from 23 countries.

Almost any car can win it. Hatchbacks, sports cars, saloons and SUVs have all been European Car of the Year at some point since its introduction in 1964.

The Volvo XC40 was announced as this year's winner on March 5, the eve of the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Here are all of the models that have won the coveted award.

1964: Rover 2000
Rover 2000 won first place ahead of the Mercedes 600 and the rear-engined Hillman Imp.

1965: Austin 1800

Last Tuesday, Uber announced that its testing phase in Arizona was over and that it’s starting to move cargoes for various customers across the State.

“We’ve been really hard at work the past several months improving the technology. “We’re building something that solves problems in the industry and also makes truck drivers’ lives easier and better.”

The way this whole thing will operate will be:
Uber will establish transfer stations at certain locations, where a regular, non-autonomous semi with a human driver will take his cargo from the port. There, the freight will be transferred to a self-driving truck, which will drive itself to another transfer station, where a regular truck will complete the last part of hauling the cargo into a rural area.

The company admits the reasons for these, is due to the fact that city streets might confuse a fully autonomous vehicle at this point. “Because we are still in research and development mode, the capabilities are changing all the time.In general, the trucks are pretty capable of driving on the highway, and that’s what we’re designing them for.”

Despite the Trucks self-driving ability, a human driver will always be behind the wheel to take over when necessary, like if they encounter an accident or a construction zone ahead, where the autonomous systems might find hard to negotiate.

Volkswagen's Spanish arm, Seat, has revealed what it says is the world's first fully electric racing touring car in the world. Dubbed Cupra E-Racer, the ground-hugging widebody hatchback is capable of 167mph and powered by batteries equal to 9,000 smartphones.

It'll accelerate from 0 to 62mph in only 3.2 seconds and reach 0-124mph in only 8.2 seconds , leaving most V8 motors in its wake.

The staggering performance comes from the battery-powered drivetrain that delivers a steady 402 horsepower and peak boosts of up to 670 horsepower.

The battery is made up of 6,072 cells and weighs 450kg, around one third of the overall car's weight and with a full charge taking around 40 minutes.

Bright sparks at SEAT's new performance arm have created the electric boy racer in the hope it'll spawn a new race series just like Formula E.

It's based on the Cupra petrol touring car but because it doesn't use an internal combustion engine there are zero emissions.

To improve aerodynamics, designers replaced wing mirrors with cameras which broadcast everything onto a large screen on the dashboard.

Seat said "The Cupra e-Racer's intention is to exceed the performance of the conventional version, to demonstrate Cupra's technological capabilities at all levels.

"We are committed to the E TCR because we are convinced that the future of competition is in electric engines.

"Just as the SEAT Leon Cup Racer laid the technical foundations of the TCR championship, once again we are blazing trails in this new experience."

The dramatic 24-second footage from the 2014 gang-related racketeering trial was released on Monday after a media coalition argued it was a public record in an important police use-of-force case.

It shows Angilau, a member of the Tongan Crip gang, calmly rising from his seat beside his attorney during the witness testimony and grabbing his lawyer’s pen.

Someone is heard yelling: “Whoa, whoa, whoa,” but before any officers could react, Angilau sprinted toward the witness and leaped with his right arm cocked overhead with the pen in hand.

The man jumped back to avoid being hit as Angilau fell feet-first over the front of the witness stand and the unidentified US marshal fires his gun.

A woman cries out in horror while other law enforcement in suits ran toward the witness stand.

Angilau’s defence attorney jumps under a desk while prosecutors stood in shock.

A bailiff swiftly moved to block the entrance to the front of the court and pointed at people in the gallery and told them to stay still with his right hand on his holstered weapon.

Someone is heard shouting in the direction of Angilau: “Get on the ground.”

An officer standing over him yells: “Drop the pen. Drop the pen out of your hand.”

As US District Judge Tena Campbell was escorted out of the courtroom, someone called 911 at the end of the released video.

The unidentified US marshal was cleared of any wrongdoing by the FBI shortly after the shooting and a review board found the use of force was within agency policy.

Lynzey Donahue, a spokeswoman for the Marshals Service, said in a statement the video “demonstrates how quickly violence can erupt, in any situation.”

The Angilau family attorney, Bob Skyes, said the video shows that the marshal “panicked” and should have used other methods to subdue him.

He points out that Angilau was already down on the ground for the final three shots and that a courtroom full of officers could have stopped him to stop him before he harmed anyone with the pen.

Skyes said: “There was no need to use deadly force. They weren’t entitled to use the death penalty on him for an assault.”

Angilau was one of 17 people named in a 2010 indictment accusing Tongan Crip members of assault, conspiracy, robbery and weapons offences.

He was the last defendant in the case to stand trial, with previous defendants being sentenced to 10 to 30 years in prison.

The Department of Justice wanted the video kept under seal over concerns it could lead to retaliatory gang violence.

Faces of the judge, attorneys and jurors are blurred out and the agency declined comment about the release of the video.

Wearing makeup may affect how people judge your leadership skills, according to a new study .

Researchers from Abertay University have found that women who wear heavy makeup are seen as worse leaders than those with bare faces.

In the study, participants were asked to view a series of images featuring 16 women without makeup, and with makeup on for a 'social night out.'

Participants completed a face perception task, in which they said how much better a leader they felt each face was compared to the other.

Results showed that both men and women evaluated women more negatively as a leader if the image suggested she was wearing a lot of makeup.

Dr Christopher Watkins, who led the study, said: “This research follows previous work in this area, which suggests that wearing makeup enhances how dominant a woman looks.

“While the previous findings suggest that we are inclined to show some deference to a woman with a good looking face, our new research suggests that makeup does not enhance a woman’s dominance by benefitting how we evaluate her in a leadership role.”

Croatian automaker Rimac might not be as popular as the Ferraris, Bugattis and Lamborghinis of the world,but at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, it has managed to wow the audience with their latest hypercar.

Named the C_Two, the newly unveiled and production ready hypercar features a full carbon fiber monocoque with bonded carbon roof, integrated battery pack and rear carbon subframe. Crash structures are formed from carbon fiber and aluminum, and the body itself is pure carbon fiber.

The Rimac C_Two makes 1,914hp of peak power, 2,300 Nm of peak torque, has a top speed of 258 miles per hour and does 0-60 miles per hour in 1.85 seconds.

Under the skin, the Rimac has a 120 kWh Lithium-Manganese-Nickel battery and four electric motors - one for each wheel. While the front wheels use a single speed gearbox, the rear wheels each have a two speed gearbox for maximum speed.

The motors are also oil cooled since they are extremely high performance. But it is not just short bursts of acceleration or a ridiculous top speed that the Rimac is good at, it also has one of the highest possible ranges of any electric car in existence today with a staggering 403 miles on a full battery charge.

It will also recharge the battery pack to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes when connected to a 250kW fast charging network.

The underbody also has a magnitude of flaps that crate venturi effects and adds to the downforce that the Rimac C_Two makes. The wheels on the Rimac C_Two are aerodynamically designed to reduce drag, cool the brakes and make more downforce.

Active aero elements include front and rear diffusor, the rear wing, the bonnet turning vane, plus plenty of underbody inlets and outlets. With their help, the C_Two sports an impressive Cd figure of 0.28 in low-drag mode.

The facial recognition have not only dispensed with the need for a key, the car simply looks at your face before deciding to open the butterfly doors and start the powertrain.Rimac says the car can also read your moods. 

Inside, the C_Two comes not only with three large touch screens, but also with a full ADAS system consisting of eight cameras (including front stereo vision),a Lidar, 6 radars,12 ultrasonic sensors,GPS and IMU sensor for Level 4 Autonomous (self) driving, making the C_Two one of the most sensitive and connected series vehicles in the world.

The Rimac C_Two also has a mode where it can assist a driver on a race track. Essentially, through GPS co-ordinates it knows it is on a given track and helps with the best line into a corner and braking points.

Rimac says each hour spent in the car generates 6 gigabytes of data. This really is a laptop on wheels.
Production of the C_Two will start later this year, with Rimac planning to build just 150 examples.

So, it’s is quicker than the Tesla Roadster (C_2 now the quickest car) . It is production ready, not in three years time like the Tesla.

Two researchers probing one of the car maker's models in recent months found the vehicle was  collecting an awful lot of information from driver's  smartphones, including text messages, call records, app activity, photos, contacts, GPS history and emails. And it was storing all that information unencrypted.

They later discovered a way to install malware on the car, forcing it not only to hand over all that information, but track the location of the vehicle in almost real-time.

The researchers from cybersecurity firm Ixia will release their findings at the Kaspersky Analyst Summit in Cancun.

Mazda said the company hadn't been contacted by the researchers and couldn't respond to the findings without more information. "What we can say is that cybersecurity and protecting our customers privacy is of the utmost importance to Mazda, and we take all concerns very seriously in order to ensure our customers enjoy their experiences today and in the ever-more-connected future".

It's unlikely to be an issue for those who own Mazdas as physical access is needed to perform the exploit, but it could be of concern to those who connect their phones to Mazda rentals and other shared cars.

Mazda fits nearly all its models with GPS chipsets, whether those vehicles have navigation activated or not, the researchers were able to leverage the hardware to send "pings" from the car to show its location in addition to grabbing personal data from the infotainment system.

There are some limitations to the attacks. First, physical access to a car is required. And the researchers noted that the vehicles don't always pull datas from all apps. The vehicles wouldn't grab signal or WhatsApp messages, and it would be "hit and miss" for the kinds of email apps from which the cars would store content.But it has no problem pulling data from standardised apps like Android open source project.

Mazda can't roll out an over-the-air update like Tesla does with its cars, so the only way remedy would be to issue a recall and load the updated software manually.

Mercedes-Benz has overtaken Toyota and BMW to claim pole position as the world’s most valuable automobile brand, according to the latest study conducted by Brand Finance.

The German automaker grew 24% year-on-year to $43.9-billion as its car sales increased by 9.9% to 2.3-million vehicles. Slipping to second was Toyota (down 6% to $43.7-billion), ahead of third-placed BMW (up 6% to $41.8-billion). 

Brand Finance said: "Mercedes-Benz invented the automobile, and is now leading the industry with a brand strategy focused on re-inventing the automobile. 

"Their success has been driven by the introduction of a new generation of vehicles led by their renewed foray into SUVs and smooth evolution of new technologies to move away from traditional internal combustion engines."

Outside the top 10, many Chinese automakers are enjoying remarkable brand value growth while focusing on the Chinese domestic mark ,now the world’s largest; This includes Haval (up 124% to US$6.8 billion), Geely (up 62% to $6.0-billion), BYD (up 211% to $3.4-billion), Baojun (up 98% to $1.8-billion), and Foton (up 90% to $1.0-billion).

Earlier in 2018, Geely purchased 9.7% of Daimler, seeking to work on electric cars with the German conglomerate, while the German government said it would keep a monitor on the rrelationship.

The Volkswagen Group, which oversees VW, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini, and several other brands, is still the most valuable overall at $75.8 billion for its entire portfolio.

Last year's biggest gainer,Aston Martin is up 268% over the prior year and now has a brand value of $3.6 billion. Aston Martin recently posted its first profitable year since 2010, which boosted it from 77th place on last year's list to 24th for the 2018 forecast.

A production version of the world's first real flying car has been unveiled at a motor show in Geneva.

The £440,000 ($600,000) Personal Air and Land Vehicle (Pal-V) Liberty can hit 112mph (180kph) on the roads and in the sky.

Unlike some of the fully autonomous flying car concepts around , which are drones big enough to carry a person or two, the Pal-V Liberty will require a pilot's license to operate.This is because, it's essentially a helicopter that you can also drive.

The twin-engine craft, which looks like a hybrid between a motorbike and a helicopter is made of carbon fibre, titanium, and aluminium and weighs 1,500lbs (680 kg), and requires a 540ft (165 metre) runway for take-off and just 100 feet (30 metres) for landing.

The craft is fitted with a similar handling system to that of a motorbike, which relies on the driver tilting the vehicle with a control stick both on the ground and in the air.

Pal-V International has designed the car so at the flick of a button the blades fold down and gather like a bat's wings on the top.The Pal-V uses normal unleaded petrol for its two 100-horsepower engines.

The 27-gallon gas tank provides a flying range of between 248 and 310 miles (400 to 500 kilometres) at an altitude of up to 11,500 feet (3,500 metres).

On the road, it can drive for up to 750 miles (1,200km). On both air and land, the vehicle has a top speed of around 105 mph (170 km/h) and goes from 0 to 60 mph  (0 to 95 km/h) in under eight seconds.

After six years of testing, PAL-V International aims to pip its competitors to the post by becoming the world's first mass manufacturer of a flying car.

Yes,the range rover sentinel is armored right from production and ir Mercedes armors now,it must be a recent development, and definitely not for all cars. Armoring is done to specification and you never know what a client can afford. Hence,they can't just armor any model of car,and sell. Besides, armoring is expensive and isn't something to be mass produced on a large scale.
