Confederation of African Football (Caf) has approved the use of Video Assistant Referee technology at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted in Egypt.

This was confirmed in a press briefing by Caf in Niamey on the eve of the final of the 21st edition of the Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Niger over the weekend.

The video technology will be used during the game on a number of occasions that include; goals and whether there was a violation during the attacking phase of play, such as an offside or a foul, penalty decisions, direct red card decisions and mistaken identity in awarding a red or yellow card.

VAR was used during the finals of the 2018 Total CAF Champions League between Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Esperance of Tunisia. It was also used at the 2018 Total CAF Confederation Cup.

According to FIFA statistics, the VAR system has had a success rate of 99.3 percent, up from the 95 percent of correct calls by referees without VAR.

The Video Assistant Referee became famous during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Fourteen countries have already confirmed their places at the 2019 tournament and they are; Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, Madagascar, Morocco, Mali, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Egypt, Uganda, Mauritania, Guinea and Ivory Coast.

The other ten places will be decided during the final qualifiers in March.

The group stage draw will be held on 12th April in Cairo, Egypt.

Middlesbrough midfielder, John Obi Mikel has reacted to his side’s Championship 1-0 away win over Blackburn on Sunday.

A first-half goal from Britt Assombalonga gave Middlesbrough all three points against Blackburn.

Mikel Obi, who was impressive throughout the full 90 minutes against the hosts, posted a video of two little girls on Twitter, who chanted his name after the game, saying: “Beyond adorable cute performance, thank you to these two little stars.

Kevin-Prince Boateng had around £350,000 worth of possessions stolen from his house while he was playing for Barcelona against Valladolid.

Police are investigating the break-in and have estimated between £250,000 and £350,000 of goods have been lifted.

Marca reported that thieves stole jewelry, watches and watches during the raid of the empty house.

The Ghanaian joined the Catalan giants in January on a loan until the end of the season from Italian side Sassuolo.



Boateng made his La Liga debut for Barca in the match with Valladolid and played 60 minutes before he was replaced by Luis Suarez.

Manchester United have received a whopping £3.8BILLION takeover bid from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

The Saudi royal family, who are worth a staggering £850bn, are hoping to tempt United's current owners the Glazers into selling the club before the start of next season.

Former MFM FC Assistant Coach, Marcellinus Anyanwu, has been appointed coach of Arsenal U-17 team at the Arsenal Soccer School in Dubai.

Anyanwu was an assistant coach at MFM FC when Nduka Ugbade was in charge of the NPFL club.

Anyanwu has enjoyed steady rise in the UAE since 2013.

He announced his arrival in the country by winning the Inter Church Festival football tournament with the Holy Trinity Anglican Church team in 2013, a competition that had all churches in Dubai competing for the trophy.

Anyanwu joined Universal Sports Club after his exploits with the Holy Trinity Anglican Church.

He was in charge of the U-16, Academy and the school league team. He won three trophies with the Universal Sports Club.

He also had a stint with the German International School Sharjah UAE in 2017.

The Owerri, Imo State-born tactician whose role model is Marcelo Lippi became the first Nigerian to be appointed as a coach at the Arsenal Soccer School in Dubai.

He is popularly referred to as Marcelo Lippi by his players.

In 2011, Anyanwu was an Assistant Coach for Imo State at the Sports Festival in Port Harcourt.

Anyanwu said in an exclusive interview Daily Sports: “I am very excited to be part of the Arsenal Soccer School as a coach, it feels good to have been chosen to impact my knowledge on the team.

“I am ready to train, teach and tell the young lads about the philosophy of Arsenal football club.”

The Imo State indigene also revealed that he will like to contribute to the development of football in Nigeria at the youth level.

“With the experience and exposure i have gained over the years in grassroots football, I can take Nigeria to the next level,” he said.

Anyanwu holds a Diploma Certificate in coaching and Training from the Nigerian Institute of Sports (NIS), Lagos. He also has international coaching certificates from the English FA and the Italian FA.

Mali will play Senegal in Sunday’s final of the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Niger, in a repeat of the opening Group B encounter. Mali needed penalties to beat Nigeria after a 1-1 draw to book their place in the final, while Senegal beat South Africa 1-0 in the other semi-final.

Senegal’s coach Youssouph Dabo says the final will not be a repeat of the group encounter which his side won 2-0. “Facing the Mali be a different match because it is a final,” he insisted.

“We beat them in the first game but I said it after that game that they can go far, so I am not surprised to see them in the final.”

Dabo’s side progressed to the final thanks to an own goal from South Africa defender Givemore Khupe with 20 minutes left to play.

Khupe turned the ball into his own net from an Ousseynou Niang cross after he had beaten Keenan Phillips on the left. South Africa’s coach Thabo Senong, who is at his third Under-20 Nations Cup finals, is already looking ahead to May’s World Cup in Poland.

“As far as the World Cup is concerned I can say that we have enough time to prepare for it,” he said after the match.

“Playing against Nigeria is another opportunity for us to face opponents of another calibre and be the start of our preparation for the world. “We will do our best since we play every game to win it.”

Mali beat Nigeria. It took penalties to separate Mali and Nigeria after the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate after extra time.

Nigeria’s Paschal Durugbor equalized four minutes from time to cancel out Mamadou Traore’s 77 minute goal for Mali. Both sides failed to score their opening penalties first Mali’s Boubacar Traore had his effort saved while Valentine Ozornwafor missed for Nigeria.

Aniekeme Okon missed Nigeria’s fifth penalty to allow El Bilal Toure to win it for Mali as he sent the keeper the wrong way with neat right footed strike.

Mali coach Mamoutou Kane admitted the semi-final had taken its toll on his team. “It was a very exhausting match in the head and in the belly,” he explained. “Luck was with us so congratulations and courage to the Nigerian coach.

“This is football and I could not express my joy like the others because for me what was to be celebrated is the match against Ghana (which saw the team qualify for the World Cup.)”

The Nigeria coach Paul Osahon Aigbogun said there was little to choose between the two sides. “It was a very difficult match against Mali and we fought as it should but unfortunately for us Mali won,” he said.

“We congratulate the Malian team for their victory and qualification. Today we cannot say that something has not worked since the two teams were equal.”

The final between Mali and Senegal is set for Sunday in Niamey while South Africa will face Nigeria in the third-place play off a day earlier. All four teams have qualified for the Under-20 World Cup in Poland in May.

The coffin of footballer Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash between Nantes and Cardiff, arrived in Argentina on Friday ahead of his funeral in his hometown of Progreso.

The British Airways flight carrying the body landed shortly after 9:00 am (1200 GMT) at Buenos Aires airport. A van waited to drive it for funeral ceremonies in northeastern Santa Fe, the capital of Santa Fe province before it is returned to the family for final rites on Saturday.

“This is a day of historic grief for Progreso. We could never have imagined this, we are all in a state of shock,” Daniel Ribero, president of the San Martin de Progreso club, where Sala played for 10 years.

Sala’s body was recovered from the plane wreckage in the English Channel last week. He was flying to his new team, English Premier League side Cardiff City, from his old French club Nantes when his plane went missing on January 21.

The 28-year-old died of “head and trunk injuries,” an inquest in England heard on Monday.

He was travelling in a light aircraft that disappeared near the British island of Guernsey.

The wreckage was found on the seabed but 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson remains missing.

Sala’s former team gave him a rousing send-off on Sunday, playing a French league match in a special all-black kit for the occasion, with each player wearing the Argentine’s name on the back of their jersey rather than their own.

Chelsea loanee Victor Moses has singled out Fenerbahce’s director of football Damien Comolli for playing ‘a major role’ in his move to the Turkish Super Lig.

The 28-year-old moved to Turkey in his quest for regular playing time after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge.



The Nigeria international joined the Istanbul outfit on loan for the remainder of the season after struggling to break into Maurizio Sarri’s team at Stamford Bridge. His fine start to life in the Turkish top-flight has helped the Yellow Canaries steer clear of relegation with his maiden goal sealing maximum points against Goztepe in his second league appearance.

During the January transfer window, Moses attracted interests from several Premier League clubs but the winger who is on his third loan stint away from the Blues has lauded the former Arsenal and Liverpool boss for convincing him to make the switch.



“Damien Comolli played a major role in my transfer to Fenerbahce, I want to thank the president [Ali Koc] and Comolli. He is a great guy, they explained their plans for the club and my role in achieving those goals. They made it clear how important I was to the plans which helped me make up my mind,” Moses was quoted Turkish Football.

Moses is the latest Nigerian to turn out Fenerbahce in recent years after Emmanuel Emenike, Joseph Yobo, Jay-Jay Okocha and Uche Okechukwu. And he revealed he had a chat about the club with his former West Ham United teammate before making his first move outside England.



“I spoke to two Nigerian players about Fenerbahce, one of them was Emmanuel Emenike who spoke very highly of the club,” he added.

The Crystal Palace Academy graduate also picked former French footballer who guided Les Bleus to the 2006 Fifa World Cup final against Italy before coaching Real Madrid to back-to-back Champions League triumph as his idol.

“My footballing idol is Zinedine Zidane, he was an amazing guy on and off the field,” he said. Moses will be aiming for a starting role when Fenerbahce visit Kayserispor for the next league action on Friday.

Emiliano Sala's sister posted a heartbreaking tribute on Instagram after Dorset Police released a statement on their website and identified ‏the body as the missing footballer's.

"The body brought to Portland Port today, Thursday 7th February 2019, has been formally identified by HM Coroner for Dorset as that of professional footballer Emiliano Sala," Dorset Police said.

"The families of Mr Sala and the pilot David Ibbotson have been updated with this news and will continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers.

"Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.

"HM Coroner will continue to investigate the circumstances of this death supported by Dorset Police."

After hearing the worst possible news last night, Romina Sala took to Instagram to post an emotional message.

"Your soul in my soul it will shine forever thus illuminating the time of my existence. I love you, tito," his sister wrote, accompanied by a picture of the 28-year old.

Sala's new club, Cardiff City, who he signed for in the January transfer window, took to Twitter to release a heartfelt statement on the player and the pilot.

"We offer our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family of Emiliano. He and David will forever remain in our thoughts," the club said.

The Egyptian Football Association, EFA, have announced that Liverpool ace, Mohamed Salah will not feature in Egypt’s final African Cup of Nations, AFCON, qualifier game against Niger on March 25.

The EFA also said that Salah will miss Egypt’s international friendly game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Speaking to KingFut, the EFA vice-president, Ahmed Shobier, said: “Mohamed Salah will not play the Niger game in the AFCON qualifiers or the Nigeria friendly.”

Shobier added: “Ahmed Hegazi will probably also be left out of the squad.”

Salah, who is currently the Premier League highest goalscorer with 16 goals, was unable to extend his lead on top of the goal chart by more than one goal after he failed to score in his side’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Monday night.

The 26-year-old will hope to lead Liverpool back on top of the Premier League table when they tackle Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.

Nigeria international John Mikel Obi and his Middlesbrough teammates will be thanking their stars that their flight back to base after their FA Cup match against Newport on Tuesday night had to be called off.

The squad and backroom staff were due to fly back to Teesside but engine failure in their aircraft stopped them leaving the ground.

They had to call back the club coach which was already heading North. They eventually got back to Rockliffe at 7am on Wednesday.

Before arriving Newport for the match, the club’s flight was delayed for two hours due to bad weather.

The players were however given Wednesday off to recover and gather their thoughts ahead of their league match against Leeds United in the English Championship.

Club manager, Tony Pulis now wants his players to put the Newport debacle behind them and build on the hugely impressive 3-2 victory at West Brom last time out in the Championship.

This was revealed by French publication, L’Equipe, in its annual report of the top football salaries.

Messi is number one, earning £7.3million ($9.5m) a month before tax.

Chelsea have announced their updated Europa League squad for the knockout stages, and there has been one surprise inclusion from Maurizio Sarri.

Danny Drinkwater was not in the squad for the group stages, having not played for the Blues since the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, but he has now been added by the club for the rest of the season.

Victor Moses has also dropped out of the squad after his loan move to Fenerbahce, however the Nigerian can play for the Turkish club in the knockout stages after rule changes.

Gonzalo Higuain comes in for Alvaro Morata after his switch to Atletico Madrid, while Rob Green also remains out of the squad so that Chelsea don't go over their homegrown quota with a third goalkeeper.

Panshak Zamani, a singer-rapper professionally known as Ice Prince, says he was extravagant during his early days in the music industry.

The artiste made the disclosure during the Off-The-Top show where he drew memories of his younger self.

Crystal Palace have signed Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi on loan until the end of the season.

The Belgium international, 25, had been on a season-long loan at La Liga side Valencia.

Batshuayi - who had been linked with a loan move to Tottenham or Everton - has scored seven goals in 32 Premier League appearances for the Blues.

"This is a fantastic signing for Crystal Palace," said club chairman Steve Parish.

"Michy is a player we've long admired, and I'm delighted that we've finally managed to get him in a red and blue shirt. He will be a magnificent addition to our squad."

Chelsea signed Batshuayi for £33.2m from Marseille in 2016, and he scored the decisive goal in Chelsea's 2016-17 Premier League title success.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, where he scored nine times in 14 games.

He netted one goal in 15 La Liga appearances for Valencia this season.

The Zanku dance is a Nigerian dance which involves the tapping of the two legs rhythmically .

The result meant Watford progressed to the next round of the FA Cup at the expenses of Newcastle.

John Obi Mikel, Super Eagles player, is set to complete his move to Middlesbrough as his jersey number has been revealed, according to Reportminds sources.

It was learnt that John Mikel underwent a medical at the English club after agreeing personal terms with the English Championship side on Monday.

The 31-year-old has been handed the number 12 shirt at Middlesbrough and will be unveiled on Wednesday.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme who now radiates with a clean bill of health has finally got a new job as he resumed his television punditry role for BT Sports in the Premier League on Saturday when Wolves defeated Leicester City 4-3 at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday. 32-year-old Carl Ikeme spent his entire career at Wolves, making 207 appearances across all competitions.

He was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017 after returning abnormal blood tests during a routine pre-season check-up.

Wolves won the English Championship title and returned to the Premier League, but Ikeme played no part due to his ill-health and subsequent treatment.

Ikeme, who was in complete remission after a tough year and intense chemotherapy, finally announced his retirement from football on medical grounds on July 27, 2018.


The former Nigeria international, however, made a comeback to the public glare on Saturday when Wolves hosted Leicester City in a Premier League encounter at the Molineux Stadium.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Antonio Valencia as captain of the Red Devils.

The Ecuadorian had taken charge of the team’s captaincy when Michael Carrick retired to move into coaching.

But Valencia has not been a regular player for the Red Devils this season with some reports suggesting a fall-out with earstwhole manager Jose Mourinho.

“He’s (Valencia) the captain. When he’s properly fit and playing he’ll wear the armband,” Solskjaer said during his presser ahead of their clash against Bournemouth.

Black Stars skipper Stephen Appiah’s commemorative football gala has been cancelled as he lost his mother on Saturday, December, 22.

The mother of the football great, Madam Comfort Afua Aidoo died at the age of 73 years on Saturday.The former Juventus ace has thus cancelled the gala which would have drawn a galaxy of former Ghanaian internationals and active players to the Wembley Park at Kotobabi, Accra.


“Today is my birthday and I should be celebrating but instead I’m mourning. Mourning the very person who gives me so much love and joy. For I always see 24th December as a day to celebrate you instead of me because you made it possible.

“This day was never complete without me showing you how much I love and appreciate all you have done for me. There was no birthday without the kiss on your cheeks.
