PoliticsEFCC Discovers N400m Cash Hidden In A Shopping Plaza In Lagos by Ogashub(op): 9:04am On Apr 08, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos zone, this evening uncovered yet another large sum of suspected laundered money to the tune of N448,850,000 (Four hundred and forty eight million, eight hundred and fifty thousand naira) only in a shop at LEGICO Shopping Plaza, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos. The money stashed in several Ghana Must Go bags were in N500 and N1000 denominations, hidden in a shop awaiting conversion into foreign currency.

Relying on information provided by a concerned whistle blower, operatives of the Commision swooped on the shopping complex and sought the identity of the owners of two shops, LS 64 and LS 67 which were under locks and keys. The shops had signages of Bureau de Change. Inquries about the owner of shop 64 indicated he had not been seen for a long time, as they claimed the shop had not been opened for businesss for close to two years. Several calls were put to the owner of shop 67 but there was no response.

The attention of the plaza’s chairman and some traders were drawn in order to force the shops open. There was no money found in shop 67, but in shop 64 heaps of Ghana Must Go bagswere found loaded on the floor of the shop. When the bags were unzipped they were found to contain bundles of naira notes totalling N448,850,000. Traders interviewed at the premises claimed they were not aware such money was housed in there, as the place hardly opens for business.

The Commission is investigating the matter in order to unravel the owner and source of the money.

PoliticsBuhari’s Anti-corruption War Is More Successful In Media Than In Court Reno Omok by Ogashub(op): 11:49am On Apr 07, 2017
It’s undisputedly noted that President Buhari has positively fought corruption in the country so far but Reno Omokri says the president only made more headlines in fishing out the culprits but failed in penalising them for the corruptible crimes. He also condemned the President’s economics plan, saying it’s nowhere close to being successful.

PoliticsEFCC Arrests Ex-niger State Gov Aliyu Over N5bn Fraud by Ogashub(op): 9:17am On Apr 06, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the immediate past Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, over an alleged scam involving N5bn.

According to the PUNCH, Aliyu, who served between 2007 and 2015, was arrested by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday after he was invited by the anti-graft commission.

The suspect was, however, detained after interrogation, pending further investigation.

A source at the EFCC said, “We invited former Governor Aliyu to our office on Tuesday and he has been in our custody since then.

“He was invited following an investigation into a scam involving about N5bn.”

When contacted on the telephone, the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Aliyu was in the custody of the commission but failed to give more details.

“The former governor was invited by the commission and he is still in our custody,” Uwujaren said.

It will be recalled that the current Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Bello, as well as the members of the Niger State House of Assembly, had called for a probe of Aliyu’s administration which they described as fraudulent.

Bello said there were several questionable transactions the former administration must account for.

The discrepancies, according to him, were discovered by the financial management committee set up by his administration, lamenting that one of such discrepancies was discovered in the state and local government joint account where a massive fraud was allegedly perpetrated.

Bello said, “We instituted a financial management committee to look at all major financial transactions of the state and local governments from May 2007 to May 2015. The committee has made substantial progress and the findings are quite revealing.

“A review of the operations of some of the major bank accounts of the state and the Local Government Joint Accounts Allocation Committee over the last eight years revealed some despicable patterns such as huge cash withdrawals by government officials, private individuals and PDP officials and members.

“For example, an examination of only two bank accounts of Government House shows more than N70bn cash withdrawals by a few officials who must explain the purpose for which the withdrawals were made. The operation of the joint account was characterized by diversions and a misapplication of huge funds especially those paid for Ward Development Projects and 10km roads projects.

“For instance, out of the total sum of over N11bn paid to the accounts of Ward Development Projects, the relevant officials of the ministry of local government could not account for N2.86bn, while N613m was spent on ‘ghost’ vehicles and N675.50m was said to be borrowed by the Ministry of Finance where the funds cannot be traced

PoliticsNiger State Drags Ex-governor Babangida Aliyu To Efcc Over N2.9 Billion Loan by Ogashub(op): 8:22pm On Apr 05, 2017
NIGER State Government has said that the matter the loan of N2.9 billion obtained by the immediate past administration of Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu at the eve of his administration is already before the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the new governor, Dr. Ibraheem Dooba and made available to newsmen in Minna said, although government did not intends to engage the past administration in a media war over the issue, it is important to made some clarifications because of the continued denial by the officials involved in the loan scandals.

According to the statement, “attention of the Niger State Government has been drawn to the continued denial, in the media, by the officials of the past administration that they obtained a loan of N2.9 billion on the eve of their departure.”

The government pointed out that while it would allow the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to do its job, as the case was already before it, it was important to ask some significant questions on the activities of the past administration, “For instance, the government in the statement wondered why would the then Secretary to the State Government (SSG) denied collecting any N600 million only to later admit that he collected the sum of N612 million for “general” security during the last senatorial bye-election in the state.

According to the statement, “Was the money actually budgeted for, and was it used for the purpose intended”, adding that “Why was the said funds given to the SSG, was he the Chief Security officer or INEC.”

The statement regretted that instead of answering questions and making clarifications, these officials of the past administration have engaged in rhetoric thereby diverting attention form the major issue.
“It is obvious that these government officials have chosen the hard way rather than the easy one, and the hard way they will get,” the government assured.
The statement however, assured that despite antics of the past administration, the government has continue to discover heinous scandals of the previous administration on a daily basis but will allow the EFCC to do their work.”

PoliticsApc Warns Sagay To Keep His Mouth Shut by Ogashub(op): 7:43pm On Apr 05, 2017
The chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) Prof Itse Sagay has been warned by the All Progressives Congress to watch what he says in the public domain that could be interpreted as an attack on the national assembly.

In a statement by Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesman of the party, APC said as a professor of law, Sagay ought to appreciate the need not to denigrate the institutions of democracy.

Describing federal lawmakers as critical to the running of government and the nurturing of democracy, Abdullahi advised Sagay to key into the “temper” of Buhari.

“In furtherance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) efforts to resolve the rift between the executive and the national assembly, the APC urges all government appointees to stop making statements that may further worsen the relationship between the two arms of government and derail the party’s effort to make peace,” the statement read.

“Specifically, the party urges Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) to exercise restraint and desist from making utterances that may be misconstrued as an attack on the institution of the national assembly.

“The party acknowledges the fatherly role being played by the President, H.E Muhammadu Buhari to resolve outstanding issues with the national assembly, by setting up a high-level committee led by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

“We believe the comments attributed to Prof. Sagay are uncalled for, regrettable and could further complicate the relationship between these vital arms of government.

“Our expectation would be that as a Law Professor of repute, Prof. Sagay would appreciate the need to not denigrate the institutions of democracy, be it the executive, legislature or judiciary.

“Moreover, as an appointee of Mr. President, we should expect the learned professor to key into his principal’s temper and help him to make friends that would make his job easier and not make enemies of people who, by virtue of the position they occupy under our law, are critical to the running of government and the nurturing of our democracy.”

APC also disagreed with Sagay’s position on the summons by the senate.

The lawmakers had invited the lawyer to appear before them, but he rejected the invitation, saying the senate lacked the power to summon him.

But the ruling party said as an appointee of Buhari, the senate could invite Sagay if it deemed it fit.

“The party specifically objects to the professor’s call on the senate to withdraw the invitation extended to him. As someone appointed by our government, we find this kind of posturing unacceptable and potentially injurious to the peace efforts by the party,” the statement read.

“The party wishes to reiterate its earlier position admonishing all elected or appointed officials of our government to desist from utterances that may endanger efforts to build a harmonious relationship between the two arms of government. Prof. Sagay should not operate outside this admonition.

“The party expresses happiness with the meeting it had with the senate caucus on Tuesday and is confident that all the issues raised will be addressed. It also urges the national assembly to further intensify its efforts to ensure timely passage of the 2017 national budget.”

PoliticsBoko Haram Attacks: Military Sniffer Dogs Deployed To Maiduguri by Ogashub(op): 7:32am On Apr 05, 2017
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai has ordered the deployment of military sniffer dogs in and around Maiduguri as part of efforts to checkmate incessant suicide bomb attacks in the city.

Buratai gave the order on Tuesday after he inaugurated a sports complex built by 7 Division of the Nigerian Army at the Maimalari Cantonment.

The army chief frowned at the incessant suicide bomb attacks in the city but noted that the attacks had reduced recently.

He, however, said the attackers seemed to have “found another loophole but I want to assure you that that loophole will be blocked’’.

“I have already directed the deployment of the military working dogs.

“We have a battalion with the Nigerian Army Military Police and I have directed them to be deployed immediately around Maiduguri so that these continuous suicide bombings will cease once and for all,’’ he said.

Buratai charged the troops and Maiduguri residents to be alert and conscious of their environment as well as strange people around them.

He further charged the troops to work hard to ensure that peace was won after winning the battle with the terrorists, adding that the North East must be kept safe.

The sports complex is named after the late Lt.-Col. U.B Umar, a commander of one of the army formations in the North-East who died in an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists in 2016.
