A final year student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomosho in Oyo State identified as Adesoji Adediran has reportedly committed suicide.

The University student was reported to have committed suicide over the weekend in the hostel.

Adesoji Adediran was until his death a 500-level-student of the Urban and Regional Planning Department of the school.

The student who according to report hung himself from the ceiling of his school hostel was found by his roommates who had been away to study for the night.


The corpse of the student was reported to have been deposited at the mortuary following its discovery.

Reacting to the death, a classmate of the victim reported that his body was found at around 5.30am.

The classmate who pleaded to remain anonymus told Punch: “He has two roommates. The roommates went for a night study on Friday. When they returned to the room on Saturday, they discovered that he had hanged himself with a cable. Nobody has an idea why he killed himself.”

Another close friend also said: “As his friend, what pained me most was that we still played together on Friday night. He never opened up to me. We asked him to go with us for the night study, but he said he preferred to stay behind. Around 5.30am when we returned, we found his corpse. He was almost done with his final year project and he never complained of anything. We are a clique and we eat together; it was all fun, until we found his corpse.”

At about 4pm on Sunday March 19th, a middle aged man was caught with the head and hands of an unidentified lady at Muwo axis in Ikoga Badagry. According to a resident of the area, the culprit had always been seen walking around the neighborhood holding a sack with blood dripping from it. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today docked one Christian Efe Oyovweyho alias Femi Adesina before Justice Z.B Abubakar of the Federal High Court Kano on a two count charge of Obtaining by False Pretence.

The defendant allegedly impersonated the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina and attempted to obtain N300,000 from a professor of Economics at Bayero University Kano, Dalhatu Mohammed Galadanci.

According to the complainant, sometime in July 2016, the defendant sent him a text message claiming to be Femi Adesina, S.A to the president on Media and Publicity.

The defendant fraudulently claimed to be speaking on behalf of the president and that the name of the professor has been forwarded for appointment in the presidency.

The complainant further stated that the defendant claimed to be searching for a better office for him. Subsequently, the defendant asked the professor to make payment of the sum of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) to facilitate his appointment to Nigeria Port Authority or Nigerian Railway Cooperation and Rural Electrification.

At that point, the professor got suspicious and reported the matter to the commission.

One of the counts read that “ You Christian Efe Oyovweyho alias Femi Adesina and another (now at large) on or about 16th day of July, 2016 at Kano, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court Kano with intent to defraud attempted to obtain the sum of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from Professor Dalhatu Mohammed Galadanci through your Zenith Bank Account with Account number: 2173729401, under the false pretence that the money was meant for a juicy appointment in Abuja , which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offense contrary to section 8 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same Act.

After listening to the charge, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution counsel Musa Isah requested a date for trial in view of the plea of defendant.
Counsel representing the defendant, T.M Oyedema however brought a motion for bail, praying the court to admit his client to bail pending the hearing and determination of the case.

Justice Zainab granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 and two sureties in like sum.

One of the sureties must be a State or Federal government official not below grade level 8.

The other surety must be a respected member of the society with a landed property within the jurisdiction. Also certificate of Occupancy in respect of the landed property shall be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.

The case has been adjourned till 11 April, 2017 for commencement of trial, while the defendant remains in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

Omega Fire Ministries has fingered Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai as the mastermind of the recent series of outrageous allegations of infidelity against its General Overseer, Apostle Johnson Suleman.

In a statement (pictured below) issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the church, through its spokesman and Communications Manager, Phrank Shaibu, stated that facts and available intelligence incontrovertibly pointed to the Kaduna Governor as the mastermind of the allegations.

According to him, El-Rufai decided to sponsor the allegations as a strategy to silence Apostle Suleiman and to take revenge for the latter’s famed audacity of standing against the persecution and killing of Christians in Southern Kaduna.

“It is clear that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is the mastermind of these allegations. The masquerade has been unveiled and is now dancing naked in the market Square. We don’t need to look any further for the source of the smoke,” he stated.

Shaibu contended that apart from the initial suspicion by the church that the Kaduna Governor might be behind the evil plot, the latest so-called revelation by one Queen Esther, a supposed usher of the Omega Fire Ministries finally uncovered the lid as to who was sponsoring the myriad of allegations against the General Overseer.

“When Festus Keyamo in his first letter to our pastor made allusion to fulani herdsmen, we dismissed it as a coincidence. Then intelligence revealed that some persons are lodged in a hotel being trained on how to clone Apostle’s voice and crop videos

“The first question that crossed our mind was who was paying the bills, especially the huge media blitz that has trailed the spurious allegations. We did not have to wait for long before El-Rufai exposed himself. Indeed, he could not wait for long before coming out of the closet,” he revealed.

The statement asked why the said Queen Esther, who allegedly pleaded for the media not to reveal her real identity should give as condition that the Kaduna State Government must guarantee her safety if the governor had no hand in the plot.

“Why is the said Queen Esther asking for protection from the Kaduna State government. Is the government now the police or the Department of State Services (DSS)? Why did she not mention any other state? Is it not obvious that she is telling us what her sponsors are willing for Nigerians to know?” It asked.

Shaibu argued that it was more than a coincidence that these allegations were coming up no soon after the Senior Pastor had an altercation with the same Kaduna State Government over the persecution and killing of Christians in Southern Kaduna.

He therefore urged the security agencies, particularly the DSS to investigate El-Rufai’s involvement in the unfolding saga, particularly the possibility that he may be harbouring a private militia.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed March 23 to rule on the admissibility of a list of beneficiaries of funds in the ongoing trial of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dele Belgore charged with money laundering.

Belgore is charged alongside a former Minister of National Planning, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman and a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke, who is said to be at large.

They were first arraigned in February but were subsequently re-arraigned on March 13, following the amendment of the charges to include the name of Allison-Madueke.

They had pleaded not guilty to the charges and were allowed to continue on their earlier bail terms.

At the last adjourned date, March 13, a first prosecution witness, Mr Timothy Olaobaju, was led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo.

He had told the court that Belgore and Sulaiman were among the beneficiaries of the sum of 115 million dollars deposited in the account of Allison-Madueke.

The witness told the court that Belgore and Sulaiman jointly received N450million on March 27, 2015.

When trial resumed on Tuesday, the prosecution sought to tender in evidence, a document containing a comprehensive list of beneficiaries of Diezani’s funds in the 36 states of the federation.

This move by prosecution was however opposed by Sulaiman’s counsel, Mr Olatunji Ayanlaja (SAN), who argued that the document did not comply with the provisions of Section 84 of the Evidence Act.

He urged the court to reject same.

In response, the prosecution maintained that the document had substantially satisfied the conditions spelt out in Section 84 of the Evidence Act, and urged the court to admit it.

After entertaining arguments from both parties, Justice Aikawa deferred his ruling till March 23.

Meanwhile, the defence counsel commenced cross-examination of the first prosecution witness.

Under cross-examination by Belgore’s lawyer, Chief Ebun Shofunde (SAN), the witness said that the N450million received by Belgore and Sulaiman was brought in a bullion van from the CBN.

On the denomination of the currencies, the witness replied, “I can’t remember vividly but I remember there were N1, 000 and N500 bills.’’

He said that the money was offloaded from the bullion van into the bank’s loading bay where it was manually counted.

When Shofunde suggested to him that it took two days to count the money, the witness disagreed, saying as a professional banker “I can count N1 billion in 20 minutes.”

The witness said that although the bank was ready to deliver the money to Belgore and Sulaiman on March 26, 2015 when it arrived from the CBN, the process was delayed by failure of Sulaiman to release his Identification Card.

He added that the transaction was captured on the CCTV camera mounted in the bank.

Shofunde said, “I suggest to you that none of the defendants collected one kobo out of the N450 million,” the witness answered, “that is not true”.

Shofunde suggested to him that it was different individuals that came to the bank on March 27, 2015 to sign and collect portions of the N450million, the witness also retorted: “That is not true”.

In the charge, Sulaiman, a professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Abuja, and Belgore, a former governorship aspirant in Kwara, were accused of conspiracy to commit the offence on March 27, 2015.

They were accused of making cash transaction of N450 million on March 27, 2015 without going through any financial institution.

The EFCC claimed that the accused paid N50million to one Sheriff Shagaya.

The EFCC said the cash sum was above the lawful threshold permitted by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

The court will again resume proceedings on March 23.

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Senator Aisha Alhassan said that the country is committed to ensuring gender equal opportunity between men and women, so as to protect the rights of women and girls.

Alhassan said this at the 61st session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on Monday in New York.

She said that the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill had passed through the second reading at the Senate and would soon become law.

“At the national level, Nigeria has scaled up its legislation on gender equality.

“This is by pushing for the enactment of the “Gender and Equal Opportunities bill” the process of which has already passed through the second reading at our national parliament.

“The bill, when finally passed into law, would enable women whose rights to descent work are infringed on to seek legal redress and be adequately remedied,” she said.

She added that government was already bridging gender gaps, exploring and fully harnessing women’s human capital assets through women’s economic empowerment and ensuring decent work for women.

“In our determination to put the issues of women on the top agenda and demonstrate commitment to the Beijing Declaration, several women are currently occupying top political and managerial positions in the country.

“Notable of which is their visible presence in the Federal Cabinet and across the 36 states of the federation,” the minister said.

She noted that “the provision of Crèches nationwide by both public and private sector institutions is in line with the global campaign to provide conducive environment for working women.

“Cardinal among government’s social investment programmes, is the housing loan scheme with the aim of affording opportunities for men and women to obtain housing loan at a single digit interest rate.”

She said the overall aim is to ensure that over 5,000 civil servants benefit in the first phase. The scheme is delivered through two pathways.

“First is the Federal Integrated Housing Programme in which government has invested 41.27 million dollars for civil servants as an incentive for them to own their own homes.

“Second is the Family Housing Fund established with a total sum of 127 million dollars to provide affordable housing and enable people outside the Civil Service to benefit from the government policy.”

Alhassan also enumerated several ongoing programmes on poverty eradication, which targeted many women in the country like the N-POWER, to combat employment, restiveness and poverty among the youth.

“N-POWER targets the enrolment of 500,000 unemployed graduates as teachers and Agric. Extension Workers and 100,000 non-graduates as artisans.

“It is instructive to state that women who are mostly the care givers of households, constitute the significant number of beneficiaries of this scheme.”

“The Home Grown School Feeding Programme is developed to provide free highly nutritious school meal to primary school pupils with food procured from the local farmers and women engaged as cooks.

“It is part of the government’s poverty eradication initiatives aimed to collectively support states to feed 24 million school children, representing the largest feeding programme of its kind in Africa.”

Under the Government Enterprises and Empowerment Programme, she said a total of 164 million dollars was earmarked for annual disbursement with a percentage of the sum set aside exclusively for women empowerment.

The sum set aside for women under the GEEP programme is called the National Women Empowerment Fund, she said.

“On a happy note also, I want to formally inform this gathering that the 24 of the abducted Chibok school girls, who were recently rescued are currently undergoing a rehabilitation and re-integration programme in a secured facility.

She said the Federal Government is not resting on its efforts to secure the release of the remaining abducted Chibok school girls.

Alhassan expressed the gratitude of the Federal Government and Nigerians to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, for appointing Ms Amina Mohammed, as his Deputy. (NAN)

A medical expert, Professor Femi Williams, categorically said yesterday that President Muhammadu Buhari, was anaemic.

This, the certified physician in Anatomical Pathology from London and Ireland, told The Nation in an interview, could only have been responsible for the blood transfusion which the president got during his medical vacation in the United Kingdom.

Buhari admitted on his return home on Friday that he had transfusion in London.

“We now have a pretty good idea of diagnosis, which is now comprehensive or good enough to say that the diagnosis of President Buhari’s illness is anaemia,” Williams said.

“You cannot be transfused if you don’t have anaemia,” he explained.

His words: “the negative clinical findings on the president that was published in The Nation on Feb 26, 2017 has been confirmed by the disclosure that the President was transfused with whole blood.

“In a previous photo of his hands prior to transfusion his nail beds were very pale indicative of clinical anaemia. The subsequent photograph of his hands that was analyzed showed that he was no longer clinically anaemic.

“The clinical history given by Mr. President that for the past 18 months he had been lethargic and feeling tired prior to his vacation is consistent with tiredness due to anaemia.

“Regaining his strength after transfusions that facilitated his return home suggests that the anaemia had been corrected successfully.

“There is therefore a preliminary diagnosis of anaemia meaning insufficient blood in the circulation.

“When this happens many organs including the brain, heart, liver, kidneys and lungs are starved of oxygen that is carried by blood to all parts of the body for efficient functioning of the person. “Sudden loss of blood as in road traffic accidents could be fatal. In this case the anaemia has been insidious and gradual over time.”

Continuing, Prof Williams said: “The question that arises in the absence of information, which is understandable, is the cause of the anaemia.

“The only information that can be gleaned from the Presidents history on arrival is his admonition against self medication. By so doing is he giving us some more relevant information that he had been told in London?

“This is the first time that a President advises that all citizens should trust their doctors and refrain from self medication.

“Is it possible that his anaemia is drug induced or drug related and that investigations in London revealed this? We do not know. If this is true common pain relieving drugs like Panadol may cause kidney damage and give rise to anaemia for which he received transfusions.”

“Alternatively certain drugs also cause liver damage and anaemia but this is unlikely in his case since he was not jaundiced.”

But he also admitted that “there are so many other causes of anaemia that cannot be dealt with here.”

“Of relevance to our last observation is the possibility that this may be anaemia related to some type of cancer that must be ruled out. Looking at the photos on arrival there is one suspicious positive finding and that his loss of muscle mass on the face in the area of the zygomatic arch below the ears.”

“This is either due to some cancer somewhere or due to aging.”

He said that the little snippets of information from the President’s history and disclosure on his health status may help millions of Nigerians damaging their vital organs from unbridled ingestion of over the counter (OTC) pain relieving and other drugs.”

He urged adequate publicity on the adverse effects of self medication and described the President’s view on the issue as a big public service to the health sector.

“Assuming this is the correct scenario the nation owes the president a debt of gratitude and if this is not correct the president has done a great service by highlighting the adverse events and dangers of self medication that is so rampant in the nation,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded plans for a major overhaul of his administration, reliable sources inform.

According to the PUNCH, the sources, who requested anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject, said the changes were going to be ‘earth-shattering’ because a few of the President’s powerful aides and prominent members of the administration would be affected.

It was also revealed that the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is likely to be affected by the changes.

A senior government official, who preferred anonymity said, “In the next few weeks, we are entering the second half of this administration. I can tell you that a major cabinet reshuffle is on the way.


Ministerial vacancies for Kogi and Gombe states would be filled, while there would also be an exchange of portfolios.

“Some junior ministers, whose relationships with their senior counterparts are not smooth would also be redeployed.”

A source within the administration, who is privy to the details of the planned changes, said the country would soon witness greater synergy between the President and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.

The source added that under the new scheme of things, the President intended to assign more important national duties to Osinbajo.

Buhari, who will resume duty on Monday after a 49-day medical vacation in London, is said to have been very impressed by what a source in government described as the ‘performance, competence and loyalty’ of the Vice President, who served as Acting President while he was away.

The source indicated that the President will be delegating more important duties to the Vice-President as time goes on.

“The President and the Vice President have always been on the same page. They are close. He likes to delegate tasks to the VP. However, not much could be done in the past because of the interference of some people close to the President.

The President is determined to remove those who interfere so that his administration can build on its recent strides,” the source, who is a senior government official, said.

It was also disclosed that besides the filling of the vacant cabinets, some ministerial portfolios will be re-assigned and redistributed.

He said besides measuring the performance of each cabinet member, the President would also examine the relationship between senior and junior ministers.

Former Edo state governor Adams Oshiomhole and ex-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor have publicly disagreed over how the Nigerian economy is being managed.

The Punch reports that the ‘fight’ occurred at Vanguard’s Economic Discourse in Lagos on Friday, March 10 after Prof. Charles Soludo delivered a keynote address titled ‘The hard facts to rescue the Nigerian economy’, highlighting some of the failures of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government, particularly in terms of fiscal and monetary policies.


But during the panel session, the minister of solid minerals development Dr. Kayode Fayemi defended the government and Oshiomhole accused Soludo of wrongly allocating millions of dollars to two new generation banks shortly before the naira was devalued.

He said: “I got some intelligence from my comrades who worked in the system and we found out that the CBN under Soludo had just allocated couple of millions of dollars to two, as they were then known, new generation banks.

Oshiomhole says Soludo does not have any leg to stand on with his economic arguments because he also failed the system when he was CBN governor.
“And I asked Prof (Soludo), if you were going to devalue by Friday, why did you auction dollar at a lower rate on Thursday? I accused Soludo, I said you have enriched these two young men to the tune of N8bn, courtesy of your internal abuse.

“When the regulator behaved in this manner, then the Nigerian condition is much more serious than we can appreciate it. We need to deal with issues of attitude.”

Soludo fired back to the amazement of the audience, saying some people tend to change the subject when they did not have an answer.

“This debate has only begun. Adams made the point about exchange rate and exchange allocation to two banks. I want to say for the record that Adams Oshiomhole has lied. I didn’t say he misquoted anything; he has lied,” Soludo said.

He added: “Every bid produced a different exchange rate and there were different winners at every bid. We didn’t do devaluation as the case may be; we had the currency depreciating as the market determined day to day. With all due respect, I think if you (Oshiomole) don’t know what to say, sir, just don’t get into this kind of personal allegation.

“Whose plan is it? Ownership will determine whether the plan is just a public relations document or whether it will be implemented. To what extent is the plan consistent with the APC manifesto, which promised a conscious plan for post-oil economy and to restructure the country and devolve power to units with the best practices of federalism? Is this plan that plan?”

He continued: “The plan envisages to continue the practice of the past government of borrowing to finance recurrent expenditure. Up until 2018, recurrent expenditure will continue to exceed total revenue. The deficit will continue to exceed capital budget, meaning that capital expenditure will continue to be borrowed, as done by the last government. So, what has changed?” he queried.

“The plan as packaged is a good effort, but in terms of our expectations as a plan for transition to a post-oil economy as promised by the APC, it is a missed opportunity.

“I am willing to bet that not much will happen in terms of the structure of the economy or the structure of fiscal and export revenue at the end of the plan.”

Soludo has been a top critic of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration's economic policies which he says are too simple to save the country from the present recession it is in.

In the spate of the recent xenophobic attacks that have become rampant throughout the major cities in South Africa. South African president, Jacob Zuma has pulled a massive shocker after announcing an immediate ban to all citizens from Southern Africa.

Effective immediately, citizens from these nine countries will no longer be allowed in South Africa in what Zuma called a temporary freeze: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Online sources report that the shocking news was met with resistance from various stakeholders and diplomats from the affected countries are said to have called an emergency meeting.

Speaking from the parliament, Jacob Zuma said the countries in Southern Africa are responsible for the rampant job loss among local South Africans.

“I want South Africans to have jobs before others but it’s the other way round. Why should my child suffer while my neighbour’s child eats in my field?”, Zuma said.

Another reason that Zuma highlighted was the alarming crime rates, stating that foreigners from neighbouring countries commit crimes and run away from their countries, mostly illegals.

“All foreigners currently in South Africa from the affected countries will be vetted and if found to have contravened, they will be sent home immediately”, he announced.

There was no word on how the affected countries would respond to Zuma’s shock announcement.
