A drug that reverses ageing could be on the market in three years, scientists claim. In early experiments, the drug nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) had a dramatic rejuvenating effect on ageing mice. Researchers hope to begin testing the drug on clinical trial patients in the next six months. Lead scientist Professor David Sinclair, from the University of South Wales in Australia and Harvard Medical School in the US, said: “The cells of the old mice were indistinguishable from the young mice, after just one week of treatment. “This is the closest we are to a safe and effective anti-ageing drug that’s perhaps only three to five years away from being on the market if the trials go well.” NMN works by boosting levels of NAD+, which helps repair DNA. Accumulated DNA damage is a major driver of natural ageing and a primary cause of cancer. The reduce level of NAD+ in the body with age means DNA is not repaired as efficiently. Recent work highlighting the anti-ageing properties of NAD+ has led to numerous supplements being sold online – though there is little evidence small doses can ward off ageing. Another potential benefit of the drug is being explored by NASA, who hope it could help send astronauts to Mars. They believe there is potential NMN could shield astronauts from the effects of radiation on the long voyage to the Red Planet. A NASA competition last year was won by Prof Sinclair’s team. The clinical trials are expected to start at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, US, this year. Read more at http://ogashub.com.ng/new-drug-that-reverses-age-could-be-out-soon-scientists-claim/

Mr Nwanze Okonkwo, an operator, Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Abuja, has advised applicants to strictly follow the stipulated guidelines by JAMB for easy registration. Okonkwo, also the Head, ICT, Digital Bridge Institute, an accredited CBT centre in Jabi, Abuja, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday.0000000000 He said that major key requirement for registration includes creating JAMB profile using candidate’s valid email address by signing into: www.jamb.org.ng/efacility/Validateemail. Okonkwo said the next step was to pay N5, 500 JAMB fees at a bank; collect a PIN after payment; proceed to the CBT centre and pay N700 for registration to a designated account number. He said thereafter applicants should return to the centre with the bank PIN and N700 payment teller to complete registration. Okonkwo said some applicants had, however, failed to follow these guidelines which had caused some delay with their registration. He said the centre was at hand to help some of these students to create an email profile at no cost and referred them to JAMB for issue beyond their control. Okonkwo said the centre had registered no fewer than 1,000 applicants since the registration commenced on Monday. Commenting on the speed of the internet, he described it as very fast, adding that JAMB had provided a dedicated router at the centre which was connected straight to their system. A candidate, Master Ugochukwu Emmanuel, told NAN that the registration was very smooth and he was able to register in five minutes as a result of his previous experience. “I think this year’s registration is easier and more understandable because of the process of registration and people that attended to us made the whole exercise easier,’’ he said. He commended JAMB for the new innovations, saying it was a lot better than last year. In a similar development at another centre, Global Distant Learning Institute, Central Area, Abuja, where the scenario was quite different as NAN observed a slow pace with the registration. Mr Eugune Onyirimba, the Public Relations Officer of the institute, confirmed that the only challenge they had was with the internet connection, which he described as very slow since Monday. According to him, we are able to register about 20 students in one hour; yesterday we were able to register about 350 students and we hope to increase that number as soon as the internet picks up. “As a result of the network issues, we have extended our closing time to 10p.m instead of 5p.m to ensure we register more candidates,’’ he said. Another applicant at the institute, Miss Esther John, said that she was unable to register despite being there since morning. ‘’I came yesterday and could not register; I am here today and I have not been able to register and my number is 104. ‘’I doubt they will get to my number before the end of the day because they are having problems with the internet,” she said. The Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has reacted to the recent crisis which befell Ile-Ife in Osun state following the clash between Hausa and Yoruba traders in Sabo Market. Recall that the clash which occurred some weeks ago led to the death of more than 40 people. In reaction to the crisis, the Ekiti state governor advised the Police to be careful with its investigation adding that “it appears that the police has so far demonstrated ethnic bias in its investigation and this is not good for the unity of Nigeria and its people.” Ayodele Fayose who condemned the clash which led to the death of several persons and destruction of properties, Fayose said: “whether committed by Yoruba, Ibo, Hausa or any tribe, crime is crime and it must be treated as such. However, handling of crime must be without ethnic bias.” He continued that: “In a clash involving the people of Ile-Ife, who are Yorubas and Hausa, who are settlers in the ancient town, only Yorubas were arrested, taken to Abuja and paraded before the press.” The Ekiti state governor’s stand was made known in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media in Ado Ekiti on Thursday. Fayose noted that the mayhem which led to the death of several persons was unfortunate, he added that the police can in no way convince the public that only the paraded 20 Yoruba were involved in the crisis. He added: “If there was a clash between Yoruba people and Hausas in Ile-Ife, are the police now saying that only the Yorubas took part in the crisis? “Both Yorubas and Hausa were attacked. Properties belonging to both Yorubas and Hausas were destroyed. Are the police sayings that those 20 Yorubas that they paraded in Abuja were the ones who attacked the Yoruba people that were also victims of the crisis and destroyed those houses belonging to the indigenes of Ile-Ife that were destroyed? “In my own opinion, the investigation so far conducted by the police was done with ethnic bias and I demand for thorough investigation that is devoid of ethnic sentiments. “Also, to prevent future reoccurrence of such crisis, I call on the Osun State Government to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the crisis, as well as identify the masterminds of the crisis. “Most importantly, security agencies in the country must treat all crimes as the same, irrespective of those perpetrating them. As it appears, crimes committed by Fulani herdsmen against other Nigerians are not being treated as crimes that should be given attention by the security agencies and this is worrisome.” Read more at http://ogashub.com.ng/fayose-reacts-to-ile-ife-clash-between-hausa-yoruba-cautions-police/

The House of Representatives has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of violating the Nigerian constitution he vowed to uphold. The lawmakers made the accusation in response to revelation by the Head of the Civil Service (HOS) of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, that the presidency had further extended the tenure of a retired permanent secretary, Dr. Jamila Shu’ara for another year (till 2018). The House had summoned the HOS after discovering that the alleged extension of service, which was for one year, expired on February 17, 2017, Daily Post reports. During her appearance, the head of service disclosed that the additional one year extension was conveyed to her office in a letter by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari. Oyo-Ita, added that the letter dated March 7, notified her that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the extension of Dr. Shu’ara for an additional one year following the expiration of the first tenure granted her in February. Dr. Shu’ara had retired from the civil service as permanent secretary in the ministry of education in 2016, having attained the mandatory age limit and year of service before an extension was granted her to remain in service. Oyo-Ita, said the president’s action was anchored on Section 171 (2) of the amended 1999 Constitution and is based on special considerations and shouldn’t be cited as policy. But her explanations were rejected by the lawmakers who condemned the extension and agreed that the development was against civil service rules and procedures. Meanwhile, plenary at the House of Representatives assumed a dramatic turn on Wednesday, March 22, when a lawmaker from Benue state, Hassan Anthony, announced his defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Premium Times, the lawmaker who represents Ado/Ogbadibo/Okpokwu constituency, cited division in the PDP as his reason for decamping. Mr Hassan’s defection to the APC has brought the number of APC representatives to 226 and that of PDP to 124. http://ogashub.com.ng/house-of-reps-accuse-buhari-of-flouting-nigerian-constitution/

A plane crash-landed and burst into flames, killing 44 passengers on board in South Sudan. Rescue workers swung into action, pulling out survivors from the burning wreckage after the passenger plane belonging to South Supreme Airlines crashed at the Wau airport. The exact cause of the crash is yet to be ascertained, but sources at the airport claim chaos erupted when a fire broke out on board, Metro writes. Pictures taken by people at the airport showed the bulk of the plane completely destroyed by fire as it was surrounded by emergency services, airport personnel and UN peacekeepers. Firefighters arrived at the scene of the air disaster and poured water on the plane’s smouldering remains, but they were hampered by a thick smoke that filled the air. South Supreme Airlines began operating in September 2013, with only a handful of flights every week between South Sudan and neighbouring Uganda. South Sudan has been engulfed in internal strife since its independence from Sudan in 2011, and only recently it declared a state of famine following years of civil war. http://ogashub.com.ng/tragedy-hits-south-sudan-as-plane-crashes-kills-44-people-on-board/
