A 35-year-old cocoa farmer in Akparabong, Sunday Ushie, on Monday confessed to killing his girlfriend, identified as Nnena Samuel, and having sex with the corpse.
It was gathered that the incident happened on January 26, 2017, in Adijinkpor village, in the Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State after Ushie murdered the
deceased after he invited her to his house and killed her with a knife before having sex with her corpse because she never gave him the opportunity to have sex with her while alive.
The farmer, who said he regretted his action and blamed the incident on the devil said;



“It is the work of the devil. I do not know how it happened. I am the one that killed her. She was my girlfriend and I knew her for two months before this incident. I slept with her corpse after killing her.
“It was strange sleeping with a corpse. I never had sex with her while she was alive because she never gave me that opportunity. I was always giving her money, but she didn’t allow us to have sex.”
According to PUNCH Metro, the suspect had invited the mother of two out in the evening of January 26, 2017, and took her to his apartment. He was said to have killed the woman when she refused to allow him to have sex with her.
The acting Commissioner of Police in Cross River State, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, who paraded the suspect along with other criminals, said the landlord of the deceased informed the police that “his tenant had been brutally murdered.”
He said;



“This suspect was arrested on January 27, 2017, at about 10.55pm, following a report at the Ikom Police Division by one Cletus Etta of Adijinkpor village that his tenant was brutally murdered.
“Her right hand and left leg and mouth were severed by the suspect. The children of the deceased – Hezekiah (11) and Ezekiel (9) – told the police that their mother was taken out by the suspect on the night of January 26, but did not return home.
“The suspect has been arrested in connection with the crime and he has confessed that he killed the woman before having sex with her. Investigation is ongoing, after which he will be charged to court for murder.”

PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA TO THE RIVERS STATE OIL-PRODUCING COMMUNITIES STAKEHOLDERS MEETING HELD AT THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE BANQUET HALL, PORT HARCOURT ON 13 FEBRUARY 2017 PROTOCOL I am especially pleased to be here in Rivers State, the treasure base of the Nation. I am here as an emissary of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari who after the visit of leadership of The PAN DELTA FORUM in November 2016, decided that we must undertake visits to engage with the leadership and people of our oil producing communities, to hear them, to seek to better understand their problems and concerns first hand and to offer to these communities in the Niger Delta, a new vision and a new compact. I have a strong personal affinity for the Niger Delta having served my NYSC in the former Bendel State, now Edo and Delta, which are very much an integral part of this zone. National service was a time of great memories as it provided an insight into the potentials, opportunities and the challenges that people in this part of the country face on a daily basis. It was the time that I realised that given the resources of the area there was a lot that could be done in a deliberate and determined manner to improve the lives of the Niger Delta people. The experience also provided a rude awakening to the dangers that the exploitation of oil and gas resources posed to the environment and livelihoods of the people of the region. The experience that I am describing was almost 38 years ago. It is therefore extremely discomfiting to know that we are still confronted with the very same situation. An unedifying lack of development and access to basic amenities in the abundance of plenty. A situation typified by continued environmental degradation and a disturbing lack of opportunities for those who can no longer carry out traditional occupations like fishing and farming. What we now have is an unhappy cycle of discontent sometimes expressed by a resort to violence and vandalism and drawing in response a strengthening of security arrangements and a gamut of palliative measures. This vicious cycle cannot continue as it builds needless tensions and frayed nerves. We just have to take meaningful steps to bring about permanent peace and prosperity to the Niger Delta. Rivers State is unarguably our oil and gas capital hosting as it does many of our onshore oil and gas fields, two of our domestic refineries, the Nigerian LNG plant, the Oil and Gas Free Zone at Onne amongst other things. It has of course hosted several oil companies and associated firms just as it is home to the international airport intended to serve this part of the country as well as the second largest port outside Lagos. It is of course also home to the Ogoni people who symbolise in many eyes, domestically and internationally, the previous neglect of the Niger Delta and the environmental damage that has been done to the area as we have exploited oil and gas to grow the rest of the economy. This is indeed why the Buhari Administration prioritised the ‘Ogoni Clean-up’ and with working with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and other partners to undertake this important task. Let me briefly update you on the progress made on that project in the time since the Presidential flag off in 2016. The Federal Ministry of Environment has set about establishing the governance framework with strong systems and controls that are required to carry the Project through its 25 year life cycle. A key component of that infrastructure is a robust governance structure, comprising mainly a Governing Council, a Board of Trustees and a Project Coordination Office (PCO). The Governing Council and Board of Trustees were inaugurated by the President on 4 August 2016 and have since had 2 meetings. The parameters outlined in the UNEP Report within which the Program must operate was approved by the Federal Executive Council before being officially gazetted on the 12th December 2016. On 12th January 2017, the Governing Council approved the appointment of Dr. Marvin Dekil, an indigene of Ogoniland, as the Project Coordinator after an international competitive process that saw applications received from other well qualified candidates from around the world. The Project office will be staffed by an initial 30 staff from both federal and state levels. Additional contracted experts from outside the system will be supported by Project Management Consultants, Monitoring & Evaluation Consultants and Communication Company. FUNDING FOR THE PROGRAM The clean-up project is to be funded by SPDC with an initial $1bn disbursed at $200m per annum over 5 years. A $10m takeoff grant has been provided. Following the flag off, a Technical Committee was set up in the Ministry, and has been working on the project-related activities that must be addressed immediately. Some of these projects in preparation include; 1. Provision of clean drinking water to the impacted communities. 2. Conducting a health impact assessment study being planned, in order to begin to better understand the level of the human health issues referred to in your letter. 3. Demonstration of remediation technology, which will allow for the testing of the different approaches that are being proffered from around the world, and to ensure that only the best is ultimately applied. 4. Groundbreaking for the construction of an integrated contaminated soil management centre which will be critical to the clean-up process. 5. Groundbreaking for the construction of a Centre of Excellence. & 6. Training These are the activities that the UNEP Report recommended for start-up. On 16th February, the Governing Council will be performing a ground breaking ceremony for the construction of an integrated Contaminated Soil Management Centre, provided for in the UNEP Report. On the same day, the project for demonstrating technologies for the clean-up, will be launched at selected sites in the four local government areas of Ogoniland. An important part of the planned work is skills and livelihood training, which will be essential in ensuring the long term sustainability of the result of the clean-up. As part of our behavioral change strategy, we plan to train about 2000 women from the four local governments in different skills that will enable them to be financially independent. These skills include Snail Farming, Palm Oil Processing, Green Housing, Fishing – Shrimps, Agriculture Extension, and Pottery. These skills were chosen from among the many that were suggested by a committee of representatives of Ogoniland who met back in August / September to agree on the first steps for the Project. In parallel with the planning and procurement of the services for training there will be a community based sensitization program in each LGA to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the clean-up and its mandate. It will serve as an entry point to reinforce the change in service delivery that no longer ‘shares money’ but delivers results in the lives of the Ogoni people and lays the foundation for a clean-up that is sustainable and provides the standards for the whole of the Niger Delta. CONSULTATIONS All the steps we have taken so far have been in a consultative process, involving representatives of government, civil society, international organizations, international oil companies and local communities. Indeed, representatives of the Ogoni communities are present on the Governing Council and the Board of Trustees and have been involved in the decision-making process. The next 6months will be critical to starting a long journey to realizing the fruits of a struggle that has cost many lives and loss of the ecosystem. Of course, Ogoniland is just one, though important part of the Niger Delta. Environmental remediation is essential across the entire region in order to restore healthy living conditions, enable other productive activities to take-off or resume and improve the quality of lives in general. This would of course require that we do not worsen the situation by acts which would further worsen the environmental damage that has already occurred. It is now clear that Niger Delta needs a new vision. But not just a new vision but a fresh commitment and a renewed spirit by all stakeholders including the states, federal agencies and oil- bearing communities. Let me lay this out for clarity: The Federal Government will begin a partnership with the oil producing states, local governments, oil companies, private sector, and civil society organizations for the rapid development of these communities. An oil communities intervention meeting is to work out what can be done in the short to medium term and the long term possibilities. There is no way that this new vision will be aborted because it does not depend for execution on the Federal government alone. Every stakeholder has a part to play. Oil exploitation by itself cannot suffice to assure our people of decent jobs and a decent income. We must make our oil producing communities hubs for petro-chemical industries, small and large. We must make these communities hubs for refining and related activities. The Ministry of Petroleum in collaboration with the oil companies is working on several initiatives for host communities including working with illegal refiners in oil bearing communities to participate in modular refineries to be established. There is no doubt that thermal power stations should be stationed here, it makes sense, the gas deposits are here. The biggest benefit we can obtain is to attract more investment to the region. But investments have a choice. They will go where they find an enabling environment especially security. It is up to us as government and people to assure the necessary enabling circumstances for investment. I must commend the oil producing communities for maintaining peace in their various communities. You have set the stage for progress. I had stated at the start of my tours that there was no reason why the infrastructure in the Niger Delta should not look and feel like Dubai. This is a point that I continue to stress. However, we must admit to ourselves that damage to pipelines and export facilities are also damage to infrastructure. Such damage also affects gas supply and if we are unable to generate electricity, all our demands for electrification may come to nought since there will be nothing to distribute. One thing that this government is determined to do is to change Nigeria from being a country that merely exports crude oil to ensuring that other parts of the economy contribute their own share while at the same time ensuring that we add value to our oil and gas resources. This is why we will be ensuring that our refineries are up and running while also encouraging the establishment of co-located refineries. Our petrochemical industries and fertiliser plants will similarly be boosted. The intention of course is to create jobs and opportunities for small and medium scale enterprises along the value chain. However, people can only work and businesses thrive in an environment of peace. This is why the Federal Government on its part is committed to continued implementation of the Amnesty Programme and to ensuring that its social investment interventions impact on lives in the Niger Delta. It was indeed a matter of some pleasure to find out that young graduates in Rivers State took advantage of the N-Power programme to the extent that this State has the second single largest number of participants in the scheme. Your Excellencies and the good people of Rivers State, the future is here. There is no time to waste. We must all re-commit to working together to making the Niger Delta a vibrant and dynamic economic zone. On its part, the Federal Government will use its forthcoming Economic Recovery and Growth Plan to restore growth, diversify the economy and promote social inclusion. We intend to do so through dedicated spending on capital and by paying particular attention to ensuring supply of power and petroleum products in addition to using small businesses to drive our push for industrialization. As you have challenged the Federal Government to action, I challenge the State and communities too, to play their part faithfully. If we do, we will change the trajectory of the history of neglect and attain the glorious manifest destiny of the people of this State. Thank you for your kind attention

A telephone conversation between President Muhammadu Buhari and President Donald Trump of the United States, yesterday, appeared to have squelched anxieties about the health of the Nigerian president and also refreshed hopes for increased American support for the country’s anti-insurgency war.The telephone conversation, which was at the instance of President Trump, was part of the new American President’s familiarisation efforts with world leaders. Trump spoke with Buhari on a dedicated phone line routed to Abuja House, the London official residential building of the Nigeria Embassy, where Buhari is spending his medical vacation. A further claim of Buhari being in fine fettle was given by Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, who confirmed visiting the President in London. Besides confirming that Buhari was doing fine, Amosun refused to give more indications on the state of the President. Anxiety over the president’s health assumed renewed national concern at the weekend after the President failed to return to the country, despite claims from associates that he had finished his medical examination and was expected back last weekend. The unease was heightened by revelations that the letter to the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, in which the President asked for an extension of his medical vacation did not give a precise date for his return. The President was quoted to have said that he would return only after getting the official clearance from his London doctors. A statement from the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina on the conversation between Buhari and Trump, stated that the “conversation was cordial and President Buhari congratulated Trump on his election as President of the United States, and on his cabinet.” The statement added that the “two leaders discussed ways to improve cooperation in the fight against terrorism through provision of necessary equipment.” It further stated that “President Trump encouraged President Buhari to keep up the good work he is doing, and also commended him for the efforts made in rescuing 24 of the Chibok girls and the strides being taken by the Nigerian military.” Trump “assured the Nigerian President of US readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism.” The American President also invited Buhari to Washington “at a mutually convenient date.” Also, yesterday, Governor Amosun confirmed that President Buhari was fine. Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of an event at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Amosun confirmed visiting the President in London. He, however, did not give the time of the visit or confirm if the picture recently circulated of the two of them emanated from that encounter. “Yes it is true I visited our President in London, and he is doing fine. If you ask me pointedly whether I saw him or not, yes I did, and that is the only thing that I can say. And, of course, you can see he is very well; he is okay. So, I don’t know what else you want me to say,” Mr. Amosun said. Asked how the President looked when he saw him, the governor threw back the question to the journalists, saying the President’s media team was in a better position to speak for the President. “I am not one of the spokespersons of Mr. President; so it will be out of place for me to talk on that. But then, they are doing their job, and you’ve listened to all that they have said,” Governor Amosun said.

Not fewer than about 20 people have been reportedly killed in a clash between communities in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

The Punch reports that the clash which was caused by a boundary dispute between people of Oku Iboku in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom and those of Ikot Offiong in Odukpani LGA in Cross River.

Heavy, war-like fighting began on Friday, February 10 night between the communities with light and heavy weapons used by both sides.

The report quotes an unconfirmed source as saying that over 20 people were left dead at the end of the fighting. Most of those killed were from Ikot Offiong after Oku Iboku youths ambushed them in the attack and chased them to the neigbouring Odukpani community.

The fighting held travellers along the Calabar-Itu Highway for hours on Saturday, February 11 until the arrival of soldiers, who drove the fighting youths away to make way for smooth movement of motorists and commuters.

An unnamed source said that the clash, which is the third in the area since December 2016 may have been sponsored.

On their part, the people of Ikot-Offiong community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have written a letter to the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-Gen. Tukur Buratai and the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris to investigate the activities of the soldiers and policemen posted to the area to foster peace.

The Punch reports that in a ‘Save Our Soul’ letter signed by Chief Etim Bassey-Offiong on behalf of his people and published by Southern City News wants Buratai and Idris to investigate the activities of personnel deployed in the Itu end of the bridge closer to Ibawa Police Division in Akwa Ibom State.

The letter read in part: “The people of Oku-Iboku on January 16, 2017, crossed the bridge and attacked our people with dangerous weapons, killing some of us. On January 19, the Oku Iboku people caught one Bassey Ekpo from Eteheten village, who was returning from Port-Harcourt and killed him at Ayadeghe Bridge in the presence of the soldiers.

“On Saturday, February 11, 2017, the Oku-Iboku people with the aid of soldiers crossed the Calabar-Itu Bridge to Cross River to attack our people. Consequent upon the renewed hostility by the Oku-Iboku people, the Nigerian Army and the police have deployed their operatives to the warring area to protect the people and prevent the attack.”

But spokesman of the Nigerian Army, 13 Brigade in Calabar Capt. Kayode Owolabi denied the allegations and insisted that the Army was on the ground to curb any occurrence of crisis between both communities.

“As I speak with you now, we just left the dispute area where our men are solidly on the ground. Our aim is to restore peace and not to take side with any community,”Owolabi said.

The Niger Delta has always remained a flash point in Nigeria with clashes among communities and attacks on oil installations.

Just last week, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo was in the Niger Delta to discuss peace with some of the communities in the bid to boost Nigeria’s oil production which takes place in the area.

Both Akwa Ibom and Cross River are part of the nine oil-producing states of the Niger Delta that also includes Bayelsa, Ondo, Imo, Abia, Edo, Rivers and Delta.

Barely days after two people were brutally murdered in Eika, bodies of two young men suspected to have been killed at an unknown place were found dumped in front of Okene General Hospital on Sunday, February 12th.

However, a Facebook user claims the men were robbers reportedly killed by soldiers.

“They said they met them on the road carrying out operation and doing so pretending to be security operatives. As you can see on the image, one of them is wearing a military belt and also they are not ebira indigens but galant soldiers actually clamped them down. Their corpses were brought to the Okene General Hospital, and the Doctor-in-charge rejected them, hence dumped by the gate.”

If reports by Sahara Reporters are anything to go by, then a rift might be ongoing between aides to President Muhammadu Buhari and the president’s doctors.


It is alleged that the rift is over a possible return of the President this Saturday, February 11.

Presidency sources have said that President Muhammadu Buhari plans to return to Nigeria on Saturday after his test results came in “fine.” However, Mr. Buhari’s return remains uncertain as his team of doctors in the United Kingdom has yet to certify him fit to take on the significant burden of his office.

According to Sahara Reporters, members of Buhari’s inner circle were pressuring him to return to Nigeria in order to avoid a power vacuum that could scale down their influence.

President Buhari caused anxiety amongst Nigerians when he abruptly left Nigeria on a 10-day vacation late January. He failed to return to Nigeria last week at the expiration of his vacation, instead writing to the Senate to indicate he was extending his leave in order to receive results from certain medical tests.

A variety of conflicting responses from the president’s aides and associates, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, helped deepen the uncertainty about Mr. Buhari’s status. Many Nigerians and other groups accused the Presidency of hiding the true status of President Buhari’s health.

Sources stated that members of the political establishment surrounding Mr. Buhari are persuading him to accept a piecemeal medical treatment plan rather than adopt a plan recommended by his UK doctors that would take several months for treatment and recovery. The president’s associates are reportedly afraid that a prolonged tenure as acting President for Mr. Osinbajo could significantly change the power equation against them.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has remained in prison for over one year over allegations of treason for demanding the break-up of Nigeria

– A video of a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) declaring Kanu as the president of Biafra has been released

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been declared as the Commander-In-Chief of the Biafran Armed Forces in a trending video showing the organisation’s main base in Spain.Kanu is being held in detention by the Muhammadu Buhari government for over a year now on charges of treason after being picked up in Lagos.The video, though old, resurfaced on social media on Friday, February 10 and has been generating reactions.

Kanu has refused to denounce the organisation that has severally clashed with security agents resulting in the death of many of its supporters.

The video shows a man, Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu, who heads the Spanish office as saying Nigeria is evil and that nothing good would come out of it.

Asiegbu, who seemed to be taking a female loyalist of the organisation round the office, introduced the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu as the first president of Biafra adding that the latter ruled between 1967 and 1972.

He also introduced late Philip Effiong as the vice president during the administration of Ojukwu.

“And our leader now is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the Commander-In-Chief of the Biafran Armed Forces and as well, the director of Radio Biafra and Biafran Television. He is the present president of Biafra.

“He is still in incarceration in Abuja,” he said.

Asiegbu introduced himself as the head of the directorate of state of the IPOB worldwide. He added that his office controls what happens across the world.

“We are disciplined people and can never be terrorists,” he said.

Boko Haram insurgents have ambushed a convoy of new army recruits in Maiduguri, killing seven troops and abducting a female soldier in the attack.

According to the Washington Post, the attack occurred on Thursday evening, February 9, near Mafa town on the main road 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Maiduguri in Borno state.

The attack has been confirmed by an army officer who spoke under the condition of anonymity.A humanitarian worker also said he heard military radio traffic confirming the attack.

However, effort to get confirmation from the military spokesperson was unsuccessful as he did not immediately comment.

Boko Haram insurgents have continued to launch isolated attacks on military formations after they were driven out of the Sambisa forest, their last strong hold in December 2016.
